ARSENAULT, Arthur Leo The death occurred peacefully at the Summerset Manor, Summerside, on Monday, March 10, 2008, of Arthur Leo Arsenault, formerly of Bedeque, P.E.I., age 77 years. Arthur was born in Bedeque on May 9, 1930, to his late parents, Gilbert and Lena (nee Avery) Arsenault. Loving brother of Eva Arsenault of Bedeque and Sidney Arsenault of Toronto, Ont. Lovingly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Arthur was predeceased by his brothers Maynard, Lloyd, Willard and Junior, and sisters Margaret, Beatrice and Guelda. BRUNTON, Avis Roberta The death occurred suddenly in Toronto on February 26, 2008, in her 78th year. Avis was the beloved daughter of the late Bertha and John Bulman, P.E.I. and she is survived by her sisters Olive Stringer (Norman), Orillia; Helen Gillis, the late William, Toronto and brother, Dunning Bulman(Claire), P.E.I. Avis will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by many family and friends. It was Avis' wish that she be laid to rest on her beloved Prince Edward Island. DREW, Lois - 72, Newburne, Lunenburg Co. passed away March 8, 2008, in the VG Site, QEII, Halifax. Born in Toronto, Ont., she was a daughter of the late George and Reta (Boyd) Martin. Lois enjoyed organizing events and activities along with camping at the LaHave River Camp Grounds. She also bowled for many years and was active with the UNICEF children's charity. She is survived by her husband, Merville; daughters, Cathy Neal, Toronto; Bonnie (Rex) Veinot, Maplewood; son, Michael (Patti), New Germany; stepson, Doug (Lynn) Drew, Riverport; sister, Grace Paul, Bancroft, Ont.; grandchildren, Venessa, Ryan, Ashley, stepgrandchildren, Nikki and Josh; step great-granddaughter, Myla; several nieces and nephews. FLEET, Douglas Norman "Doug" - 53, Truro, passed away Friday March 7, 2008, at home. Born in Halifax, he was a son of Ida Mae (Boutilier) Fleet of Halifax and the late Elmer Herman Fleet. Before moving to Truro, Doug did a lot of volunteer work with the Brunswick Street United Church, Halifax, The Metro Turning Point Centre and the Life Styles Program. After moving to Truro, he did a lot of volunteer work with the Truro Corps of The Salvation Army, Truro. Doug loved to play bingo, bass fishing on the bay, hunting, and his favourite passion was helping people in need. Besides his mother, he is survived by sisters, Velda (Clyde) Boutilier, Mushaboom; Belinda (Gordon) Thorne, Dartmouth; Pearl (William) Hatter, Edmonton, Alta.; brothers, Randall, Dartmouth; Miles (Nancy), Cole Harbour; Tony (Debbie), Lower Sackville; Leslie (Bev), Lake Echo; sisters-in-law, Cathy Tibbo, Porter's Lake; Mildred Fleet, Spryfield; very close friends, Barry and Wanda Carrigan, Truro; several nieces and nephews. KANE, Christopher Patrick "Kako" - 28, Lower Sackville, passed away on March 9, 2008, in QEII Health Sciences Centre. Born in Edmonton, Alta., he was a son of Elizabeth and Anthony Dean, Karen Dube and the late Ron Cormier. He is survived by sisters, Pauline Cormier, Tammie Dean; brothers, Tommy Dean, Tyler Dube; nephews, Trenten Cormier, Tyler and Joey Dillman; niece, Brianna Dean; several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by brother, Leo Dube; grandparents, Patrick and Alice Kane, Gertrude Cormier and Susan Dean; aunts, Shirl McIsaac, Isabell Burt. Although Chris left us too soon, he always lived his life to the fullest, from hanging with his friends and members of the SLC, playing pool, camping, golfing, and the odd game of poker. Chris was the most fun guy to have around, a loyal friend to the end, and always gave his shoulder when it was needed. MacLEOD, Beverly Ruth - 73, Springhill, passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2008, in All Saints Hospital, Springhill, after losing her courageous battle with cancer. Born in Springhill, she was a daughter of the late Douglas Edward and Marion Louise (O'Brien) Blue. Beverly was employed by the Town of Springhill for many years, first as a stenographer and then as a social services director. Bev was a kind and caring person who spent many happy occasions with family and friends. She particularly enjoyed playing cards with the girls, spending time with her sister, Joan, and summers at the cottage at Heather Beach. She is survived by her partner, Ralph Terris; son, Brian (Grace) MacLeod, Springhill; stepdaughter, Fran (Mike) McMillan, Springhill; sister, Joan Blue, Halifax; grandchildren, Trevor, Megan, Alisha, Aleasha, Bill, Kate, Erin, and Nicole; eight great-grandchildren; special friend, Max; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Clarence MacLeod; son, Frank MacLeod; stepson, Glen Terris. Cremation has taken place. A visitation will be held from 10-11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 12, followed immediately at 11 a.m. by the memorial service, both in A.H. Brown Funeral Home, Springhill, with Rev. (aujourd'hui UPA), un des membres fondateur de la Coopérative Agricole de Granby et producteur agricole et maraîcher bien connu dans la région. La famille désire remercier très sincèrement le personnel des soins à domicile du CLSC La Pommeraie, en particulier Mme Nicole Phaneuf et le Dr. Robert Fujioka pour leur humanisme, leur support et écoute. La famille de M. Meunier sera présente au Funérarium le dimanche 16 mars 2008 de 14 à 17 h et de 19 à 22 h afin de recevoir les témoignages de sympathie. Her love of playing the piano, gardening, and knitting will live on through her family. She was predeceased by her husband, Howard, and brother Ron. WILSON, JAMES (JIM) COOPER, BSc, CE, PEng, 1938 - 2008 - Passed away following a brief illness in Kitchener Ontario on Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at the age of 69 years. Jim is survived by his loving wife Janet; his children, Martha and her husband Glenn Archer, Timothy and his wife Jackie, and Mary and her husband Jason Watkins; and his 3 grandchildren, Kate, John and Lauren. He is also survived by his sisters, Jeano of Vancouver and Suzanne of Goderich. Jim was predeceased by his parents, Hedley and Audrey Wilson of Kennebecasis Park NB; and his sister, Nancy of Fredericton NB. Jim was born and brought up in St. John NB and educated at Rothesay Collegiate School, U.N.B., Queens and Wilfrid Laurier. After working for Allis Chalmers in Montreal, he was employed by the University of Waterloo for 24 years. He was Director of Co-operative Education and Career Services for 10 years. After his retirement in 1993, he devoted much of his time to gardening at the 'Farm', traveling, antiquing and enjoying his grandchildren. He had a life long career as a linesman for the power commission and took great pride in his only daughter and their shared passion for horses at the Crazy 8 Stables. Cinq frères: Emery, Edgar, Gilbert, Adrien et Stanley; une fille, Blondine, ainsi que deux fils: Rodrigue et Regis, l’ont précédée dans la tombe. DESMOND, PHYLLIS IRENE The death of Phyllis Desmond occurred on Thursday, March 6, 2008 at the Oromocto Public Hospital (William Duffie Unit). Phyllis was a loving wife to her husband, Robert, and daughter of the late Laurie and Mary (Stevens) States of Kentville, NS. She is also predeceased by her brothers-in-law, Ken Johnson and Ron Hall. Along with her husband, Phyllis is survived by her three sons, Chris Desmond of Montreal, PQ, David Desmond of Halifax, NS, and Timothy Desmond of Vancouver, BC; her brothers, Lawrence (Beulah) States and Douglas (Debbie) States; sisters, Bertha Johnson, Doris Gibson, Joyce Hall, Annie Clements, Helen States and Shirley Bromley; brother-in-law, Richard (Juanita) Desmond as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. PICKERING, Willard (Bill) - 1933-2008 - On Wednesday, March 5, 2008, Willard Pickering, beloved husband of Mary and beloved father of Colin James, passed away at Seven Oaks Hospital at age 74 years. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 40 years Mary; son Colin James; sisters Gloria Pretty of Hamilton, ON and Joyce Alick of Kirkland Lake, ON. Bill was born in Cobalt, ON, son of Mabel and Jack Pickering, raised and grew up in nearby Kirkland Lake, ON. He was a noted hockey player in the IHL with the Toledo Blades and the Fort Wayne Komets. Bill had worked at several jobs but will be remembered as a long time employee at Mine Equipment Inc./Wajax. Funeral Service will be held on Monday, March 10 at 7:00 p.m. at CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL, 1442 Main Street. Winnipeg, MB. Service to conclude in the chapel with cremation to follow. Loving mother of Martha (the late Cavan) Jones, Sarnia, Edward (Elizabeth) Soulliere, Mt. Brydges, William (Marian), Sarnia, Joan (Greg) Gates, Barrie, the late Eugene Soulliere, Richard (Donna) Soulliere, Waterloo, James (Teresa) Soulliere, Kitchener, and Janet (George) Tancrede, Sarnia. Proud grandmother of Douglas, Joseph, Catherine, Melissa (Richard), Jessica (Mike), Alaric, Edward, Kenndal Soulliere, Terri (Dave), and Tim (Danielle) Dagg, Gary Gates, and Michael and Joan Tancrede; and great-grandmother of Christopher, Emilee, Tyler, Caitlyn, and Lawrence. McCARTHER, Henry W. - The death of Henry W. McCarther, age 92 of Centennial Villa, Amherst and formerly of Maccan and Sackville, N.B., occurred in the Cumberland Regional Health Care Center on Saturday, March 8, 2008, following a brief illness. Born in River Hebert, he was a son of the late Joseph and Charlotte (Theal) McCarther. A graduate of River Hebert Elementary and High Schools, he worked at Lone Pine Mine for four years. He was then employed at the Canada Electric Generating Plant, then the Nova Scotia Power Commission and latterly the Nova Scotia Power Corp. in Maccan as a first class stationary engineer for 41 years. He played hockey with the River Hebert Superiors and Imperials, and was active in baseball and curling. He was a former member of the Sackville Curling Club, the Brookside and Amherst Curling Clubs. He was a member of the Lawrence Carter foursome of Amherst who won the Nova Scotia Senior Men's Curling Championship in Truro in 1970 and traveled to Kamloops, B.C. for the Canadian Championship. They again won the Nova Scotia Championship in Middleton in 1975 and competed in Calgary, Alta. for the Canadian Championship. He was a former member and Trustee of the Maccan United Church, serving as a senior elder for 32 years and recording secretary for 13 years. He was a former member, elder and trustee of the Immanuel United Church in Amherst and was a former member of the Ecumenical Men's Choir with Mrs. Edith Newcombe as director and organist. He moved to Sackville in 1981 and was a member of the Sackville United Church serving as a member of session and the trustees. He was a member and Past Master of the King Edward Masonic Lodge F & AM #86 in River Hebert and was a former member of the Lebanon Masonic Lodge #28 in Sackville. Henry will be sadly missed by his sons, Rev. Wayne (Carolyn) McCarther, Halifax; Bill (Mary), London, Ont.; and Allison (Mary), Porter's Lake; six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Arthur Conrad, Amherst; sister-in-law, Glen, Whitby, Ont.; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Laura (Mattatall); sisters, Annie, Helen, Maizie, Lottie and Doris, and brothers, George, Joseph and Cyril. Henry's remains have been entrusted into the care of the Furlong Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St, Amherst (902-667-8777). The funeral service will be held at the Trinity St. Stephen's United Church, Amherst on Tuesday, March 11, at 2 p.m., burial in the Amherst Cemetery in the spring. Visitation will be held at the Furlong Jones Chapel today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., King Edward Masonic Lodge will hold a Masonic Memorial Service on today at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of the donor's choice gratefully appreciated. HAWES, Christopher John Christopher John "Chris" Hawes passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 8, 2008 at the age of 85 years. Chris will be lovingly remembered by his sons, Derrick (Marianne) of Calgary, Terry (Anne); grandchildren Edward and Victoria, great-grandchildren Lydia and George; sister-in-law Jennie all of England, as well as his extended family in Calgary. Chris was predeceased by his parents Bessie and Stanley, his brother Roger and former wife Pauline. Chris led a truly fulfilled life until the time of his accident and subsequent brain injury. He touched many people through his journey from England to Canada. He was a kind and generous man with a great sense of humour. He loved flying, driving through the mountains, gardening and golfing on occasion. The family would like to thank the staff at Bethany Calgary for their wonderful care of Chris over the past years.
