DAUPHINEE, Cyril Otto - 85, Halifax, passed away February 29, 2008, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the Late Cyril L. and Ella M. (Otto) Dauphinee. He was a veteran of the Merchant Marine and served in the Second World War on numerous vessels involved in the war effort. He was a member of the RCMP (Marine Division) and was employed on several government vessels until his retirement from the Halifax Naval Dockyard in 1987. Most recently he was a resident of Parkstone Enhanced Care in Halifax. He is survived by sons, Shaun (Diane), Glen (Sandy), Mark (Gloria); sister, Helen McGinnis, California; grandchildren, Sam, Lynne, Kirk, Shane, and Joshua. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Beryl E. Dauphinee; sisters, Evelyn Glass and Marion Schneider; brother, Edgar Dauphinee. No visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. ISENOR, Dawn Michelle Anne - 43, Stillwater Lake, passed away peacefully Friday February 29, 2008, in the VG Site, QEII, surrounded by her family, after a courageous three-year battle with cancer. Born in Aberystwyth, Wales, she was the only daughter of Ronald Coles, Head, St. Margaret's Bay, and the late Janice Coles. Besides her father, she is survived by her husband of 21 years, Glenn; daughters, Lauren and Leah, Stillwater Lake; brother, Darren (Maria), Halifax; maternal grandfather, Walter Leblanc, Yarmouth; maternal aunts, Jill, Meredith, Sandy, and Susan; father and mother-in-law, Ross and Helen Isenor; sisters-in-law, Debbie and Gail (Marcus) Goodick; nephew, Alex, all of Dartmouth. Dawn moved to Canada with her parents in 1970 and attended Sir John A. MacDonald High School and later Kings College, graduating from Dalhousie University with a commerce degree. She later worked in the Marketing Department of MT&T, before resigning to raise her two daughters. In more recent years she operated her own web design business. She was involved in volunteer work, especially on the board of directors of the Unicorn Theatre. She was a loving mother and devoted wife who will be sadly missed by all her family and friends. KEEPING, Maxwell "Max" - 66, Mulgrave, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday March 1, 2008, with his family at his side. Born on June 22, 1941 in Boxey, Fortune Bay, N.L., he was a son of the late Sylvia Ann (Blagdon) and Aaron Keeping. Max was a fisherman all his life, right up until his death. He enjoyed playing darts, cards, ice fishing, trout fishing and hunting. LaPIERRE, Victor J. - 78, a retired Sergeant in the Canadian Armed Forces, passed away peacefully at his home in Plant City, Fla., on Saturday, February 23, 2008. LUCAS (McLean), Mildred Agnes - 83, Lucasville. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother on March 1, 2008. Born in New Glasgow, she was a daughter of the late James and Sarah (Borden) MacLean. She received her early education in New Glasgow public schools and went on to get her teaching degree at the Nova Scotia Teachers College in Truro. In the late 60's, she was a chairperson on the board of the Black United Front. After a short period of teaching she became a stay-at-home mom and bookkeeper for her husband's business. She also prepared income taxes for family, friends and members of the community. She was a member of the Lucasville United Baptist Church, and although she raised a large family, he always had time for her church. She held several positions within the church. She was church clerk for over 25 years, Sunday School Superintendent and teacher, past president and member of the Ladies Auxiliary for over 50 years and a member of the Sackville Women's Missionary Society. She was honoured by the AUBA Women's Institute in October 2005. She is survived by sons, Scott (Gloria) MacLean, New Glasgow; Kelvin, Anthony "Bruce" (Betty), Rev. Matthew (Elsa), Andrew and Jonathan "Craig", all of Lower Sackville; Shipley (Cathy) and Courtney (Tammy), Lucasville; daughter, Robin (Fabian), Lucasville; and brother, Donald MacLean, Montreal; 18 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; special caregivers, Tammy Gallant, Pat Carter, Leah Gough, Lynn Ball, Cathy Ashe; many nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Maude MacLean. MacDONALD, Alice Jean - 87, a long-time resident of Leitches Creek, passed away peacefully and beautifully on Saturday, March 1, 2008 at 5:10 p.m. in Dartmouth General Hospital, surrounded by her family and friends. Alice was the wife of the late John Robert MacDonald, and the daughter of the late Robert and Sarah (Clarke) Walton. She was born in Leitches Creek, and spent most of her life there, until 2002, when she moved to Dartmouth to live with her daughter Holly. Alice had received her elementary education in a one-room school house in Leitches Creek. She attended high school in North Sydney, and then went on to business college in Sydney. Alice was a faithful member of St. Columba United Church, Leitches Creek, where she participated in the United Church Women organization. Mom enjoyed curling as a member of the Sydney Curling Club, and she loved to read and play bridge. Alice is survived by daughters, Judy, Laura and Holly, all of Halifax and Dartmouth. Besides her husband John, she was predeceased by her only brother, Charles Walton. Visitation for Alice will be 3-6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 4, in W.J. McLEOD, Ruth Lillian - 81, Glace Bay, passed away on March 2, 2008, in Ocean View Manor Nursing Home, Eastern Passage, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. Born in Glace Bay in 1926, she was a daughter of the late William Edward and Edith Harriet (Smith) Clements. She is survived by her sons, Lloyd (Nancy), Bridgewater; Bruce, Glace Bay; daughter, Laura Greig, Dartmouth; grandchildren, Brad, Julie, Alison, Iain, Jarrett, Regan, and great-grandchildren, Bryden and Kiesten, as well as a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Calvin McLeod; brothers, Edison, Roy, Arthur, Lloyd; sisters, Sophie and Ivy. Ruth was a member of St. Mary's Anglican Church where she sang in the choir. As well, she was an active member of the Coal Town Chorus. Ruth was a loving mother and grandmother who loved to spent time with her family and friends. MOSHER, Hiram Richard - 93, formerly of Halifax, passed away on Friday, February 29, 2008, in Dykeland Lodge, Windsor. Born in Gold River, Lunenburg Co., he was a son of the late James and Maude (Swinamer) Mosher. He will be remembered by his many colleagues in the construction industry and by the family and friends who passed through the family home while attending Dalhousie University. He will be missed. RUSSELL (Fequet), Loretta Ellen - -85, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 27, 2008, in Northwood Centre. Loretta was predeceased by her husband, Graham, and son, Donald. SHARPLES, Kenneth Allen - 61, Stewiacke East, passed away February 29, 2008, in Colchester Regional Hospital. He was a son of Wesley and Mabel (Allen) Sharples. He was a member of Sharon United Church. Ken graduated from the Nova Scotia Land Survey Institute in 1968 as best student in photogrammetry and then became an instructor at Holland College, Charlottetown. He moved to Amherst in 1973 and worked for the Land Registration and Information Service (formerly Maritime Resource Management Service) until 1995, at which time he moved back home to Stewiacke East. He is survived by his brother, Robert (Anne), and nieces Kimberley, Katherine, and Krista. Ken enjoyed watching "Jeopardy", doing crossword puzzles, especially the New York Times puzzle, and enjoying the company of his friends at the Iron Forge Lounge. The family wishes to extend thanks to the entire staff of the 4th floor of Colchester Regional Hospital with special thanks to Doctor Sarbjit Singh and Doctor David Sheey. Cremation has taken place. THURBER, Blanche Irene - Freeport, passed away in Tideview Terrace Nursing Home, Digby, on February 28, 2008. The eldest of eight children, Blanche was born on March 18, 1909, a daughter of Holland and Edith (Cann) Thompson, Port Maitland, Yarmouth Co. Blanche is survived by her daughter, Brenda (Roger) Teed, Freeport; grandsons, Jeffrey (Helen), Freeport; Stephen (Denice), Bridgewater; great-granddaughters, Amanda and Alyssa Teed, Freeport; Sasha Teed, Bridgewater; sister, Alice Haley, Port Coquitlam, B.C.; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Preston Ellsbree Thurber in 1978; brothers, Borden, Malcolm, Earl; sisters, Jeannette, Iris, and Eleanor. Blanche was the eldest member of Freeport United Baptist Church, a member of the Fairisle Rebekahs, and a lifetime member of the Isabel Tibert Women's Missionary Society in Freeport. Blance was an avid quilter in her day, and for many years, a faithful member of the "Sewing Circle". There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. UHLMAN, Ralph R. - 89, Chelsea, Lunenburg Co., passed away February 29, 2008, at home. Ralph was born September 15, 1918, in Chelsea, on the same homestead where he lived all his life. He was a son of the late Nathaniel and Matilda (Turner) Uhlman. Ralph worked hard all his life in the woods and in the lumber industry until he retired, all the while maintaining the family farm, raising his animals and tending his crops. Up until the last few years, Ralph was never without a good horse and a pair of steers. There was nothing he liked better than to raise them up from young, break them in, and then work with them in the field or in the woods. Many people regarded Ralph as the local veterinarian and also the local butcher. Ralph would always lend a helping hand when someone was in need and was somewhat of an expert on the history of the community. In 1994, Ralph accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour and in the summer of 1995 he was baptized, at the age of 76, and joined the membership of Chelsea United Baptist Church, where he rarely missed a Sunday Service. Ralph dearly loved and cared for his family. He strove hard to support them in whatever way he could and he was so deeply loved in return. Ralph is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ruth; sons, Roy and his wife Cathy, Robert and his wife Linda, all of Chelsea; granddaughter, Candice (Phil) Ramey, Bridgewater; grandsons, Ashley (Krystal) Uhlman, Calgary, Alta.; Michael Uhlman and Christopher Uhlman, Chelsea; stepgrandson, Jeff Naugler (Vanessa Slauenwhite), Strathmore, Alta.; great-granddaughter, Morgan Ramey. He was predeceased by an infant daughter and an infant son; brothers, Clyde M. in Infancy, Clyde F.; sisters, Myrtle McIntomney, Ethel Worman, Vera Uhlman. Visitation 7-9 p.m. today in R.A. WENTZELL, Ross Hector - 88, formerly of Clearland and a resident of Hill View Acres Home, Middlefield, Queens Co., died peacefully at the home on Friday, February 29, 2008. Born in Clearland, he was a son of Owen Edward and Effie Maude (Schnare) Wentzell. Ross worked in his father's stave mill as a cooper making barrels for many years and at National Sea as a fish sorter for approximately 18 years. He was an elder at Trinity United Church in Mahone Bay for 25 years and a volunteer worker at Hillside Cemetery for 10 years. Ross is survived by his granddaughter, Julie Zwicker, Bridgewater; grandson, Mark Zwicker; and his great-granddaughter, Mallory Zwicker, Lower Branch; sisters, Verna Hubley, Bridgewater, and Elsie Farquhar, Burns Lake, B.C.; brother, Carl, Bridgewater. Ross was predeceased by his wife, Elsie Margaret (Sawler); daughter, Eyvonne Zwicker; brothers, Moyle, Roy, Ralph, Clyde, Lloyd, Elmer, and Earle at two years of age. PHILLIPS, Jane Marie Anne (nee: Wilson) 2008-03-03 1954-2008 It is with great sadness that the family of Jane Marie Anne Phillips announce her passing Saturday March 1st, 2008 at St. Joseph‘s Hospital. Jane was born August 30th, 1954 in Charlotte, North Carolina, moving to the East End of Fort William at the age of 3. Schooled in Thunder Bay and graduating from F.W.C.I., she then married her best friend, Marshall, at the age of 19. They set out to raise a family in Atikokan, where she took part in the St. Pat‘s C.W.L and the Rebecca Lodge. The family came back to Thunder Bay in 1978 and Jane became a member at St. Elizabeth‘s C.W.L as well as the Ladies Auxiliary (Ortona Legion). She was a past Vice President at the Kakabeka Legion Br.225, an executive member and member of the colour party. She was an avid volunteer for her community, participating in the Children‘s Festival, Nordic Games, church teas and bazaar‘s and an original member of the Friends of Chippewa Park. Jane ran several home based businesses, such as tupperware, nylons, sweatshirts and Market America. She worked for many years at the Fort William Gardens box office as well as the concession stands at the rink. She was an assistant secretary for the Thunder Bay Twins hockey team before moving on to the Thunder Bay Community Auditorium upon it‘s opening. Many will remember Jane from the Intercity Shopping Centre, the Great Canadian Wholesale Club, where she was a member of the negotiation team for the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 175 and Grande Portage Lodge and Casino where she stayed until her illness began. Jane was always one to have her hands in everything and was always “on the go”. During her many jobs and community activities she developed a close circle of friends that remained with her until the end. Jane will be forever missed by her best friend and husband of 34 years, Marshall, son Jason Phillips (Allison Miron), daughter, Tonya Kantola (Corey), sisters, Debbie Optiz (Rick), Cathy Swan (Les), little brother John Wilson a.k.a. Unkie (Lori), father-in-law, Wm. E. Phillips, brother and sister-in-law, Bruce and Diane Phillips. Also surviving are several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Jane was predeceased by her father, James Wilson (1977), her mother, Ida Wilson (2006), mother-in-law Sarah Phillips (1986), grandparents Stefano Bortolon (1976) and Maria Bortolon (1971). Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at St. Elizabeth‘s Church, 766 Sprague Street with Father Rey Ronquillo officiating. Interment at Mt. View Cemetery. LAVOIE, MARY M. - Mary M. Lavoie of Dalhousie, age 96, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday Feb. 29, 2008 at the McNair Manor, Riveview. Born in Mulgrave Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late William O'Neill and Mary Norton. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Mary was an avid bridge player for most of her life and a long time active member and past president of CWL. In her earlier years she excelled in sports, especially basketball and tennis. Following the untimely death of her husband, Edouard, in 1954, she began a successful career in insurance until her retirement at the age of 65. Mary will be sadly missed by her six children, Camilla MacDougall (James) of Oromocto, Mary Clare Macleod (Wayne) Dalhousie, Anne Mahoney (Leo) of Moncton, Andre (Karen) Of Charlottetown, Louis (Ginette) of Petit-Rocher, and Paul (Frances) of Riverview. Grandchildren Diane, Sandra, Joanne, Lynn, Kim, Bobby, David, Brian, Cherie, Doug, Edward, Mathieu, Jeff, Mark, Michael, Steven, and Claire. In addition to her parents and husband, Mary was predeceased by her daughter, Mary Magdalene in 1941; and granddaughter, Colette (1995); brother, Lawrence; and sisters Ella, and Grace. DAVIDSON, LILLIAN ANNE 1916-2008 Lillian A. Davidson passed away Friday, February 29th, 2008 at the Kenneth E. Spencer Memorial Home at the age of 91. Born in Moncton, she was the daughter of the late James A. Doull and Priscilla (Weatherbee) Doull. Lillian was a teacher at Oulton's Business College, and a member of the First United Baptist Church. Lillian and her husband, John owned and operated Davidson's Cabins and Motel on the Salisbury Road for many years. Lillian will be sadly missed by her precious niece, Florence Good and nephew, Phillip Francis, as well as several nieces and nephews. Mildred I. Williston 1941 - 2008 Miramichi - Mildred Ida Williston, of Manse Street, (Loggieville) Miramichi, and wife of Dellas Williston, passed away at the Moncton City Hospital, on Friday evening, February 29, 2008, at the age of 66. Born in Black River Bridge, on November 18, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Cecil and Florence (McGraw) Murdock. She was a homemaker; a former employee of Dictrict # 16 School Board; a former Canada Post Mail Carrier. She was an active and dedicated member of the Wellington Street Baptist Church, Miramichi and a member of the Prayer Group of her church. Léo R. Melanson 1943 - 2008 Léo R. Melanson, age 64, of 10 Railway Ave., Moncton, NB, passed away February 29, 2008 at the Moncton City Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Dieppe, NB on December 2, 1943, he was the son of the late Elzear Melanson and Alma Melanson (Leblanc). Léo was a truck driver and attended the Assomption Cathedral Roman Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Carolyn; his mother, Alma Melanson (Leblanc); one daughter, Paulette Chiasson (Rene) of Dieppe; three sons, Léo Paul (Angie) of Moncton, Michael (Elaine) of Riverview, and Raymond at home. He was a loving father figure to Karen Chandler, Kathy Lennon, Donna Lennon, and Donnie Lennon. He is also survived by five sisters, Theresa Goudreau (Alyre) of Shediac, Claudette Smith of Moncton, Annette Donelle (Paul) of Moncton, Yvonne Kelly (James) of Ontario, and Bernadette Campbell (John) of Nova Scotia; four brothers, Yvon of Shediac, Alban (Jeanita) of Ontario, Ronald (Dorine) of Dieppe, and Paul (Susan) of Woodstock, NB; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Ulysse and Reginald; and one son, Ronald. By the request of the family, there will be no visiting time at the funeral home.
