LAROCQUE, Ronald "Ron" In hospital in Ottawa surrounded by his family and close friends after a courageous battle with cancer. Predeceased by his parents Walter and Emily and his sister Barbara (late John). Survived by his brothers Gary (Clara), Reginald (Luci), Wayne (Linda), Keith (Leanne)and Daryl (Irene). He leaves behind his special niece Lorielle (Dave) and his grand-nephew Jack. Ron will also be missed by many nieces and nephews. Ron was an ardent supporter of the Odawa Native Friendship Centre serving on the Board of Directors; was Former President of the SOS Children's Villages Canada and was very proud of his Metis heritage. As a federal public servant Ron was involved with Aboriginal Employment and Training and the Urban Aboriginal Strategy. A memorial service will be held in Ottawa at a later date. Ron will be buried in the spring with his parents and sister at Lac Ste-Anne, Alberta. In lieu of flowers donations to the Odawa Native Friendship Centre or SOS Children's Villages Canada would be greatly appreciated. Condolences can be sent to www.mem.com . HAWORTH, Janice (Rabjohn) - passed away on February 21, 2008, at Shuswap Lodge, Salmon Arm BC. Born July 5, 1923 in Rotherham, England, she emigrated with her husband and two daughters to Canada in 1948, living briefly in BC and Quebec before settling in Niagara Falls, Ontario. She returned to live in BC in 2001 after visiting her daughter there for several summers. Janice enjoyed quiet pastimes like reading, crossword puzzles, listening to classical music, bird watching, and following the fortunes of her favorite baseball team, the Blue Jays. Predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Captain Thomas Kenneth Haworth, Janice will be sadly missed by her daughters Joyce (Rudy) Dyck of St. Catharines, Ontario and Gillian (Trevor) Richardson of Blind Bay, BC; granddaughter Sheri (Jason) McDougall of Grimsby, Ontario and grandson Rudy Dyck Jr. of Mississauga, Ontario. She was the proud and loving great-grandmother to Kailyn and Connor McDougall. She also leaves a brother, Donald Rabjohn of Dinnington, England. We wish to thank Dr. J. Levins and Dr. D. SEELEY, Myra Fyfe (nee Gouck) - Suddenly at her home on Friday February 29th, 2008 at the age of 77. Beloved wife of the late Frank Seeley (2003). GENTILE, Rose (Carmody) 2008-03-03 1924-2008 It is with great sadness that we the family announce the passing of a wonderful mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. Rose Gentile, 83-years-of age of St, Joseph’s Heritage, Thunder Bay (formerly Nipigon) passed away on Sunday, March 2, 2008, peacefully with her family by her side at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre 1A Oncology Unit. Rose was born in Schreiber Ontario on December 31, 1924. On July 9, 1947 she married Jobey Gentile and together they raised five children in Nipigon. After retiring to Thunder Bay the couple enjoyed 16 years of apartment living. After Jobey’s passing Rose moved to St. Joseph’s Heritage where she enjoyed socializing with many new and old friends. Rose was a devote Roman Catholic and a life time member of the Catholic Women‘s League. While in Nipigon Rose spent numerous years as a Trustee for the Separate School Board. In her earlier years she considered herself "quite the athlete" and actively participated in speed skating, baseball, curling and bowling where she received many trophies. Her main interests were spending time with her family and taking many trips to Alberta and back to Schreiber and Nipigon. She loved to bake cookies for the grandchildren to take home, knitting slippers and dishcloths for her family and friends, scratching bingo tickets, and shopping for the latest fashions. Rose was very passionate about politics, willing to argue with anyone who would take up the challenge, as she defended her Liberal party. She is lovingly survived by five children ˆ Connie (John) Skabar of Hillcrest Alberta, Geraldine (Don) Keating of Schreiber, Jo-Anne (Butch) Kovacs of Nipigon, Maria (Gordie) Grove Thunder Bay, Joey Gentile, Edmonton, Alberta and by eight grandchildren Jeremy (Simone) and Donny Keating, Chris (Jennifer) Skabar, Stephanie and Kelsie Kovacs, Alyssa and Matthew Grove and Curtis Gentile. Seven great grandchildren Skylar, Star, Dallas, Dante and Spencer Keating, Maya and Gabrielle Skabar. Also surviving are sisters-in-law Mary (Karl) Kazmierczak and Belle Carmody of Thunder Bay and one brother-in-law Gordon Partridge of Roxboro Quebec. Rose was predeceased by her husband Jobey in May 2005; parents Con and Alice Carmody, brother‘s C.J., Billy and Eddie. Sisters Nancy Partridge and Rev. Sister Catherine Carmody. Funeral Services for the late Mrs. Rose Gentile will be held on Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. where the family will gather at St. Dominic‘s Roman Catholic Church for the Funeral Mass celebrated by father Dan Lapolla. Private interment of Ashes beside her husband Joseph in St. Andrew‘s Cemetery to be held later that day. GOODFELLOW, Robert "Gary" 2008-03-03 Dec. 22, 1935 - Mar. 1, 2008 Robert "Gary" Goodfellow died peacefully after a long hard-fought battle with illness on Saturday, March 1 at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. Born to Robert and Dorothy Goodfellow, Gary was raised in Fort William and attended Fort William Collegiate. During his youth, he loved delivering papers and driving his Grandpa’s brand new truck. As a young man he moved with his parents to Atikokan where he began working as a miner and started his family. After returning to Fort William, he pursued his childhood dreams in car sales and heavy duty construction. Gary was instrumental in the planning, development and overseeing of numerous projects in various locations in the District and outlying areas. His passion for cars and construction is admired by everyone he came in contact with. Anyone who knew Gary knew his expertise with CIL explosive as a licensed explosives technician. Gary’s deepest love was his family and friends. His love was bigger than life. Windy Lake was his favorite fishing place which he spoke of very often. He enjoyed the outdoors, whether camping, fishing, hunting, ski-dooing, traveling or shootin the breeze with his buddies, he created many wonderful cherished memories. His adventure stories always brought a ray of sunshine into our hearts, along with an everlasting chuckle or grin. The lessons he taught in his own suttle ways are truly blessings. Gary is survived by his loving mother Dorothy R. Goodfellow, Thunder Bay, four beloved daughters Susan Goodfellow, Thunder Bay (son Jordan, Edmonton), Vicki Alatyppo (husband Harry, sons Darcy and Alex), Calgary, Dorothy (Dodie) Goodfellow (son DeJay), Vernon, BC, Sherrilyn Dierden, Edmonton; wife Joan; step-daughters Kelly, Patti and Colleen Macleay, Thunder Bay and their families; brother Jim Goodfellow (wife Susan and sons Jimmy and Robert), New York; special aunt Jessie Steele (husband Harold); cousin Don Davies, Thunder Bay and closest friend and confidant Vern Anderson (wife Darlene), Murillo along with a large blended family of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. She is survived by her loving daughters Janet (Duncan) Hossack, Pamela Young and (Mary Young, deceased); grandsons Charles (Tracey) Coleman and (James Coleman, deceased); great-grandchildren Victoria Coleman and Thomas Coleman; sister Margaret Etienne and sister-in-law Marion Porter. Predeceased by brothers Richard Frederick Porter II, Johnston Donald Porter and Hector McInnes Porter. TRENHOLM, Douglas Stuart "Skip" - Passed away March 2, 2008 in his 92nd year. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Margaret (O'Brien) in 1999. Doug was a son of Emily (Downey) and Douglas C. Trenholm of Amherst, and younger brother to Mary, Jean and Allie (Webster/Ratcliffe), all deceased. He is survived by son, Brian (Marjorie Macdonald), Amherst; daughter, Nancy (Jack MacDonald), Baddeck; grandchildren, Allison, Ian (Karen), Jonathan (Chantal), and David (children of Brian and Marjorie), and Kevin (Marguerite), Kirk (Shauna), and Kim (children of Nancy and Jack). Doug was "GG" to Annabel (Allison), Isla (Ian) and Aubrey (Jonathan), and great-grandfather to Shea, Sarah and Katherine (Kevin), and Joshua (Kim). He loved them all dearly and they returned his affection. He will also be missed by many nephews, nieces and cousins, who all knew him as "Uncle Skip". Doug was brought up in Amherst and attended Mount Allison University briefly before returning home to help his family. He began a career in 1935 with the Royal Bank (Amherst, New Glasgow and Windsor) that was interrupted by his service with the Royal Canadian Navy (RCNVR) from 1941-45, serving at sea (HMCS Arvida, Dunver and Runnymede), and at Stadacona and Cornwallis. He retired as a Lt.-Cmdr. and Staff Officer to 5 Escort Group, out of Newfoundland. Married in December 1942 to Margie, they were posted with their young family after 1945 to the RBC in Digby, Bridgewater and Halifax. In 1952, Doug and Margie chose to settle in Amherst and Doug took the job of accountant to Dunlap's Hardware, where he led the company business office for many years before retiring in 1982. Active in many sports in high school, Skip concentrated in later life on curling and sailing. The latter began with the building of small sailboats at Amherst Shore in his youth, and culminated with active yachting post retirement, out of Pugwash Yacht Club, and Baddeck. Curling was a passion he shared with Margie, and Skip was a Nova Scotia seniors champ in 1970 and a Nova Scotia Masters champ in 1989. He also served as president of the Amherst Curling Club, and was an Honorary Life Member and a Provincial Representative to the Royal Caledonian Curling Association. Most importantly, Doug was a man with a quiet sense of responsibility in all he undertook, with family, church work and other organizations. Doug was a faithful member of Trinity-St. Stephen's and a Board of Stewards veteran. He was an unfailing help to his sisters and wife Margie during the series of illnesses that befell them in their final years, always with great care and without complaint. He deserves the rest that he has now been awarded. Many thanks to Dr. K. Bienkowski, the staff of Centennial Villa, and of the emergency room and medical units of Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre for their fine care. Particular thanks to Carol Embree, Dr. Ferguson, Cindy and Lisa and the other nursing staff who made Doug's last hours comfortable and dignified. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity-St. Stephen's United Church or to Cumberland Health Care Foundation. Arrangements are in the care of Furlong-Jones, 70 Church St., Amherst. There will be a private family service at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, with an public visitation Tuesday between 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will be held later in the spring.

MARTIN, Lt. Col. Kenneth Gordon, B. Sc. (Eng) Sportsman, Soldier, Engineer, Teacher 1919 - 2008 Died peacefully March 1, 2008 at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital in Ottawa, of natural causes. Adoring husband of 67 years to Dorothy, beloved father to Rob and Brian, grandfather to Jennifer, Gillian, Caitlin and David-James, and great-grandfather to Owen, Kylie, and Lila. Having grown up in Kingston where he shone as a hockey player and scholar, he attended the Royal Military College in 1936, where he led his freshman class academically, and helped the College hockey team to a famous victory over the cadets of West Point. With the outbreak of war in 1939 he took a commission, and joined the First Canadian Division in Britain. While there, he followed his father's example from WWI, and fell in love with a young English WAAF, Dorothy Ashcroft. Acting swiftly, according to his favorite motto, Carpe Diem, he convinced her to marry him in 1941. He served with distinction as a communications engineer in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and the Pacific, and following the war returned to Kingston to finish his Engineering studies at Queen's University, graduating in the famous class of Science 48 1/2. During postings as an army engineer in Kingston, Oakville and Ottawa, he also actively served his communities, tirelessly organizing and running minor hockey and minor baseball programmes. Retiring from the military with the rank of Lt. Colonel in 1971, he began teaching his passion, mathematics, to many fortunate students at Laurentian High School in Ottawa. Following this second career, he continued tutoring mathematics privately from his home in Kanata well into his eighties. Ken passed as he chose to live, gently, with dignity, and with as little fuss as possible. He was the embodiment of the RMC designation, Gentleman-Cadet, and he will be greatly missed by Dorothy and all of his loving family. PLANK, James Wilfred - Heard his name on February 29, 2008. His release from earthly pain was welcome and well prepared as his loved ones were gifted with time to acknowledge and share their love and admiration for this first-class man - a gentleman and a scholar, Jim modeled a life of strong Christian values, solid family ideals, and a deep work ethic. His joy was found in his love of the Lord, his lifelong sweetheart, his family, great literature, and fine works of music. Jim had the ability to inspire those around him to rise to greater heights morally, intellectually and spiritually, challenging us all to follow our own paths. His impact was felt by many after 34 years of teaching - many of these at Herman Collegiate Institute in Windsor. And, he lent comfort to many through his years of Pastoral Care in jails and hospitals, and his Elder work in his churches. His careers included selling subscriptions to Liberty magazine as a young boy, reining in run- away horses on his 2nd job as milkman, teaching, and volunteering with the Alzheimer Society. Born on October 29, 1930 in London, Ontario, Jim spent most of his school years there before moving with his parents to a farm in Merlin, Ontario. Jim enjoyed a blessed and rich childhood. He will be dearly missed by his sisters Audrey Lumley (John), and Marion Windell. He is predeceased by his parents Laura and Fred Plank, his sister Helen Zanier and his brother Fredrick Plank. Jim takes temporary leave from his wife of 53 years, Mildred Plank and his four children - Cynthia Morris, Grant Plank (Linda Plank), Amy Robinson (Claude Robinson) and Jennifer Plank (Michael Watts). He is well loved by his grandchildren: Nicole Plank, Jennilee Pino (Brad), Benjamin Robinson, Andrew Morris, Kimberly Plank (Eduardo), Patrick Robinson, Nicholas Robinson, Helen Watts, Dakota Robinson, Emma Watts, Nakita Robinson, and his Great-Grandchildren: Lucca Conte, Amilia Pino, and Ella Plank. Liane Zanette 2008-03-02 Mrs. Liane Alice Zanette-Higgins, age 45 years, a resident of Thunder Bay, passed away in Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, on Thursday, February 28, 2008 due to complications from a recent illness. Liane was born on June 21, 1962 in Fort William, Ontario. If one‘s life is measured by love then Liane had a very significant life and brought love and laughter to so many. She was always a caring and jovial wife, mother, sister and foster mother. Liane was a longtime foster parent with Dilico and was also previously a foster parent with Children‘s Aid. Liane was a mother to all in need , no matter the circumstances. Liane nurtured and enriched the lives of literally hundreds of frail children from across the region. If ever an angel of mercy and unselfish guardian of the weak graced this earth – it was Liane. Thru Liane we all learned so very much about the simple things in life .These messages were delivered by Liane‘s distinctly “Wry” sense of humor. When Liane “held court” at gatherings , people sat captivated, Liane was a hard act to follow – in so many ways!!. To be an angel one need not have wings, Liane was an angel here on earth. Liane was predeceased by her parents Theresa and Rino Zanette. She is survived by her husband Larry Higgins, son Brock (wife Krista) granddaughters Isabel and Taylor and grandson Tristan, sisters Lynn Wessner (husband Jay, daughters Tiffany and Marissa) and Suzanne Pucci (husband Mike, sons Justin and Mitchell), brothers Robert (wife Roberta, daughter Olivia and sons Brandon and Kristian) and George Zanette (wife Deborah, Daughter Alicia and sons Ryan , Christopher and Jordan). She will be deeply missed by her family and foster children. ADAMS, Ernest William - 77, passed away peacefully March 1, 2008, in Shoreham Village, Chester, where he had lived for the past year. Born in Halifax, he later moved to Western Shore and worked for Colin Vaughan's Cooper Shop. Ernie loved playing hockey on Vaughan's Lake where he became know as "King of the Lake" and in his later years he loved walking. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Harding Branch No. 144, Western Shore, and St. Mark's Anglican Church, Martins Point. He is survived by nephew, Derek Adams; niece, Jennifer Adams, and sister-in-law, Jamirie Adams, all of Truro. He was predeceased by his mother, Hilda Adams; brother, Eric; grandfather, Herbert Adams. No visiting by request. A graveside committal service of ashes will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 5, in Western Shore Cemetery, Rev. Bonnie Baird officiating. FEETHAM, Annie Sophia - "Miss Feetham", as she was respectfully known by students for many years in the Truro area, passed away in her 100th year on Saturday, March 1, 2008, in Karlaine Place in Truro. She was born on January 12, 1909, to Harry and Pauline (Langille) Feetham. After graduating from the Provincial Normal College in 1928, Annie taught school for over 40 years, first in Woodville, Kings Co., and then in the Truro area, notably in Alice Street Elementary and Truro Junior High. Annie was a member of the Colchester East-Hants Retired Teachers' Organization and the Nova Scotia Teachers' Union Retired Teachers' Organization, as well as St. John's Anglican Church, where she was the oldest member. In earlier years Annie traveled extensively and enthralled many students with her travel adventures. She was a great reader, maintained an interest in world affairs and enjoyed needlepoint as a hobby. As a teacher she was "one-of-a-kind" and enjoyed visits from many appreciative students through the years. Annie was a true lady in all aspects and maintained her dignity to the end. She possessed a great love for humanity and had a special place in her heart for children, the downtrodden and the poor. She was extremely unpretentious, practiced humility and was devoted to her religion. Predeceased by sisters, Hilda Jones and Ernestine Sansom, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Thanks are given to the staff of Karlaine Place for the excellent care given to Annie, and especially to Claire, Ruth, Lisa, Naida, Anita, Debbie and Sharon. Special thanks to Helene for the kind gift of her time. Thanks also to Dr. Frank Slipp and Rev. Lori Ramsey. Cremation has taken place. No visitation by request. Service will be held in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 5, with Rev. Lori Ramsey officiating. JANSEKOVICH,Ernestine “Erna” 2008-03-03 Mrs. Ernestine “Erna” Jansekovich age 85 years of Newport Avenue passed away peacefully in Roseview Manor on Friday February 29, 2008. Born in Gratz, Austria on April 2nd, 1922, she was raised and educated there, immigrating to Canada in 1950 with her husband. Once here she took a job as a Nurse‘s Aide in the Port Arthur General Hospital for ten years and then later as a custodian; first with Lakehead University for ten years and then Confederation College for ten years, retiring in the early 1980‘s. In her free time Erna loved to travel, returning several times to visit family in Austria. She also enjoyed motorcycles and classic cars. As well she loved attending plays and performances at Magnus Theatre and the Auditorium. Erna will be lovingly remembered by her sons Gary (Lori Van Santvoort) and Peter (Madonna), grandchildren Jason, (Lisa), Cheri (Mike Dopp), Cyndi (Ewan) Downie and Stacey Lyght, great grandchildren Larissa, Alysha, Paris, Jamie, Jessica, Joshua, Jazlyn, Baily and Jacob, as well as 1 sister Helma Feichtinger. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive. She was predeceased by her husband of 47 years John in 1998, her parents and two brothers. Funeral Services for the late Mrs. Erna Jansekovich will be held on Wednesday March 5th, 2008 at 11:00 AM in the chapel of the HARBOURVIEW FUNERAL CENTRE, 499 North Cumberland Street, officiated by Pastor Roy Conn. GIROUX, Maurice Real 2008-03-03 It is with great sadness that the family of Maurice Giroux announce his passing at the age of 75, in St. Joseph‘s Hospital at 5S on Sunday, March 2, 2008. Maurice was born in Beauceville, Quebec on January 20, 1933. Maurice worked for many years as a truck driver in Ontario, Quebec and the U.S. The last job he held was Skidding hydro poles for Dan Johnson Contractors in 1990. A job he enjoyed for the camaraderie of young fellows. Maurice enjoyed going to the casino, visiting with friends and family, and playing cards. His passion was watching the TV news on the French channel RDI. He was always up to date on news and weather. Maurcie leaves behind his children, Pierre (Stella) here, Helene, Montreal, and Jovette, Beauceville. Also Lucille Rissanen (companion and best friend) and her children Armand, David, Daniel, Andrew, Linda and Arlene. Four grandsons, Frederic, Maxime, Martin and Marc-Antoine. Also special grand-children Ashley L, Tyler, Levi, Jasmine, Natasha, Jillian, Ryan, Sara and Ashley F. Numerous niece and nephews. Plus, sisters Therese, (Jacques) Louise, and Francine, (France), brothers, Denis, Robert, Jean-Guy (Nicole), Raynald (Francine) and Gaston, and special sister-in-law Solange Poulin. Predeceased by son Ghislain, father Francois, mother Marguerite and brother Normand. There will be no funeral as per his wishes. GALLANT, Sister Thomas Marie - 96, a Sister of Saint Martha of Antigonish, died at Bethany, the Motherhouse, on Saturday, March 1, 2008, in the 75th year of her religious life. Born in Inverness, and baptized Harriet Mary, she was the second youngest in a family of six. Sister was the daughter of the late Judge Thomas Gallant and Marie (Deveaux) Gallant. The family lived in Belle Cote, and later moved to Gravelbourg, Sask. Sister Thomas Marie entered the Sisters of Saint Martha on January 8, 1934, after having taught school for two years. She pronounced her first vows on August 24, 1935. In 1938 she pronounced her final vows and obtained her B.A. degree from St. Francis Xavier University. In 1940, she obtained the degree of Master of Science in Social Work from St. Louis University, St. Louis, Mo. Her first ministry was in medical records at St. Martha's Hospital, Antigonish, followed by twenty-seven years in social work in Family Service Agencies in Dominion, Sydney, Regina, New Waterford and Glace Bay. For nine years (1968-77), Sister Thomas served as medical social worker at St. Martha's Hospital, Antigonish. Sister Thomas returned to Bethany as the Congregation's first pension co-ordinator, serving in the capacity from 1977 to 1992. Sister continued being involved in some form of clerical work as a publisher of the community's own news magazine, The Bethanite, until January 1999. She served as a community leader in three of the communities in which she lived. In 2001, Sister Thomas moved into Bethany's Extended Care Unit, and remained there until her death. Sister Thomas Marie is the last surviving member of her family. She was predeceased by sisters, Ida Delaney and Helen Margaret; brothers, James Patrick, Daniel Wilfred, Joseph Anthony, and Timothy Joseph. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. The remains will be resting at Bethany beginning at 1:15 p.m. today, where a Celebration of Vigil will be held this evening at 7:30 p.m. Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, March 4, at 2 p.m. in Bethany Chapel. HIRTLE, James William - 32, Mount Pleasant, Lunenburg Co., passed away Friday, February 29, 2008, in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in Bridgewater, he was the son of William and the late Christine (Corkum) Hirtle. He was an advocate for Fabry's research at the NIH Hospital in Maryland. Jamie is survived by his father, William Hirtle; sister, Nancy Wilson, Halifax; paternal grandmother, Minnie Hirtle, and maternal grandmother, Berlie Corkum. He was predeceased by his mother, Christine; paternal grandfather, Marshall Hirtle, and maternal grandfather, Robert Bruce Corkum. There will be no visitation by request.
