MELANSON, EDWARD JAMES - The death of Edward James Melanson of Saint John, NB, husband of the late Elsie Agnes (McPhee) Melanson, occurred on Sunday, March 2, 2008 at his residence. Born in Saint John on April 23, 1920, he was a son of the late Edward Daniel and Ellen (Jack) Melanson. Edward had been employed until his retirement with the National Harbour Board as Carpenter Foreman. He was a member of the NB Candlepin Bowlers Association, the Milford Memorial Center, the Federal Superannuates National Association and the Golden Age Bowlers Club. Survived by his son, Albert (Evelyn) Melanson of Saint John, NB; a brother, Stanley (Clarice) Melanson of Fredericton, NB; one grandson, Kevin Melanson (Jessica Spalding) of Fredericton; two great-grandsons, Grant and Blake; several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his wife, Elsie in 1973; two sons, Edward James Jr. and Mark Kenneth. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506) 634-7424. At Edward's request there will not be any visiting or funeral service. BENOIT, John Alexander - At Hospice Niagara in St. Catharines on Saturday, March 1, 2008 in his 73rd year. Dear brother of Margaret Deyoung, Rita Deon, Sadie Benoit of Antigonish, N.S., Theresa (Charlie) Benoit of Sudbury, Anna Burton of Garson, Ontario and Georgina (Gene) Benoit-Sedore of St. Catharines. CARTER, Harry "Jack" - 68, Dartmouth, passed away suddenly at home Friday, February 29, 2008. Born in London, Ont., he was a son of the late Violet Hawkes, and was raised by his aunt, Elaine. Jack was a Chief Storesman in the Royal Canadian Navy 1958-1990. A dedicated husband, father, grandfather with many friends. An avid sportsman who was a member of Run Nova Scotia, he was inducted into the C.F. Sports Hall of Fame for boxing for the following accomplishments: Atlantic Command Lightweight Champion, two-time Canadian Featherweight Champion, Canadian Lightweight Champion Finalist, World Featherweight Championship Finalist. With a professional record 44 fights 39 wins, three losses and two draws. He was also a coach for his grandson which he enjoyed immensely. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Deanna Carter, Dartmouth; children, Reginald (Diane) Johnson, Shelley (Art) Boutilier, Joe (Nancy), Jacklyn (Reg) MacKinnon, John (Judy), Amanda (Terry) Creelman, Angela (Scott) Lyons; adopted son, Ken (Dawn); brother, David Benstead; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; special companions, Sam and Tyson. KINSMAN, JOHN MILTON - Mr. John Kinsman, age 89 died peacefully at Vision Nursing Home on Sunday, March 2, 2008. Born in Kentville, N.S. he moved with his family to Windsor, Ontario in 1923, where he was raised and went to school. He moved to Sarnia in 1947 where he worked at Polysar in the Drafting Department and married his wife Barbara in 1949. He retired in 1984 but remained active in the community and his church. He participated in the Home Security program with the Sarnia Police Department and spent several years as a volunteer with the C.N.I.B. repairing white canes. In recent years, having been diagnosed with Parkinson's, John appreciated the friendship and help of the local Parkinson's Support group. He looked forward to taking part in the Annual Walk, joined by many of his family. John was a member of St. Giles Church since 1957 where he developed and enjoyed many close relationships. He further enriched his life with the church family by serving as an Elder for many years. Singing was a lifelong passion which he shared with his wife Barbara in the church choir. He also enjoyed singing with the Bluewater Chordsmen for many years. Predeceased by his wife Barbara (2006). Survived by daughters Peggy Kinsman of Lucknow, Joy Kelch (Mike) of Sarnia, Anne Ryan (Greg) of Sarnia, Nora Green of Georgetown and son John Kinsman (Kara) of Guelph. Also survived by 10 grandchildren, 6 great- grandchildren, sister Ethel Thrasher of Windsor and sister-in-law Margaret Reynolds of Goderich. John also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. Special thanks to the staff of Twin Lakes Terrace and Vision Nursing Home for their care and support over the past 2 years. John was well known throughout the city. He will be missed and fondly remembered by all for his LOVE OF LIFE. MERCER (Lebel) (nee Day), Frances Eva 2008-03-03 It is with great sorrow that the family of Eva Mercer announce her passing on Monday March 3, 2008 at St. Joseph‘s Hospice surrounded by family members. Eva was born on Dec. 10, 1928 in Fort William, Ontario to Henry and Annie Day. Eva was one of eight children. On Sept. 11, 1948 she married Nelson Lebel and had nine children of her own. She stayed home to raise her family until Nelson‘s passing on May 16, 1984. Being the strong willed, independent woman she was, Eva obtained her drivers license at the age of 56 years and went out into the work force. Eva was employed at H&R Block and managed Lewis Craft, Things Engraved and the O.L.G. booth, all at Intercity Mall. After retirement, Eva stayed active and through her bowling league met Jack Mercer. They were married on May 21, 1994. Together they continued bowling and enjoyed travelling through Canada and the U.S. They were also active in the Kakabeka Legion. Eva had many talents, a few being a great cook, seamstress and knitter. She tried to teach her daughters these skills with some success. She loved crosswords, bingo and travelling with Jack, but most of all she loved her family and friends. She was a dedicated, strong, caring and loving person. She was predeceased by husband Nelson Lebel, sister Bobbie, brothers Norman & Russell Day. She will be dearly missed by husband Jack, sons Melvin, Dave (Kathy), Ken (Kim), Richard (Kathy), Bruce (Bev), daughters Darlene (Mick) Ager, Sharon (Bill) Sisson, Donna (Don) Liddicoat, Karen On (Marc Turcotte). Grandchildren Brett, Kyle, Jordy, Lorise, Aaron, Adam, Peter, Jennifer, Mike, Michael, Dustin, Andrea, Shannon, James, Jessica, Ashley and Ryan. Great grandchildren Taylor, Cael, Ezra, Sage, Jasper and Oscar. Brothers Richard, Bill (Sylvia), Jack (Lucy), Ralph (Rose), and numerous nephews and nieces as well as special friends Fran and Clifford Kerslake. We would like to thank the Doctors and nurses on 3C & 3A at the T.B.R.H. as well as the nurses and staff on 4N at St. Joseph‘s Hospital. Memorial service will be held Friday March 7, 2008 at 1:00 pm at Kakabeka Legion. Luncheon to follow. Interment will be held at a later date. Ann was born in Rotterdam, Holland on June 20, 1921 and immigrated to Calgary in 1954. DRURY, Mary - It is with great sadness that we share the news that our beautiful mother Mary Drury passed away at the Maple Park Lodge on Sunday, March 2, 2008. A devoted mother, Mary leaves behind her three children: Mary Kathryn, James (Pat), and Mark (Bev). Her countless hours of volunteer work include the Hospital Auxiliary (Lifetime Membership), Gilmore Lodge, Meals on Wheels, and Red Cross Blood Clinics. VALCKX, Judith Ann (nee Schellenberg) July 19, 1945 - February 27, 2008 Judy Valckx, beloved wife of Wies Valckx of Calgary, passed away on Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at the age of 62 years after fighting her battle with cancer. Judy was born in Didsbury, Alberta on July 19, 1945. She enjoyed her time with family and friends, and was a volunteer with Girl Guides of Canada for seventeen years. She also enjoyed being involved with city politics and worked at City Hall in the Aldermanic Office of Ray Clark for fifteen years. Judy enjoyed her hobbies of genealogy, gardening, and volunteering with the Marlborough Community Association. Besides her loving husband Wies, she is also survived by her children Jane and Kim Poirier, and Karen Valckx; grandchildren Chantelle and Marissa; and extended children, Laura (Dave, Landon, Casey, and Hailey) Schneider, and Dale (Cheryl, Shaelyn) Case. She is also survived by her sister Sandra Valckx, and brothers Wayne (Terry), Lyle (Sharon), Terry (Joyce), and Randy (Starla) Schellenberg. Judy was predeceased by her parents Jacob and Evelyn Schellenberg. FISCHER, Teresa (nee Ambrose) 2008-03-03 Teresa Fischer (nee Ambrose), age 74 years, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 1st, 2008 in the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre after a lengthy chronic illness. Teresa was born in Pedace, Italy in 1933 and came to Canada in 1957. Thanks to the generosity and spirit of her family, she adapted to life in the new country eventually residing on her beautiful property on Dog Lake Road. During the summertime, Teresa especially enjoyed her country home tending to her garden, being outdoors and close to nature. She enjoyed spending time with her friends and family and all will remember the warm welcome one would receive when going to visit. She had a great sense of occasion, and loved to have a good time. She especially loved going out dancing. She also appreciated life`s simple pleasures realizing their true importance. Teresa was a member of St. Anthony`s Roman Catholic Church, where she was a member of The Catholic Women`s League, and also she was a member of The Italian Centennial Hall. Teresa was predeceased by her husband Helmut Fischer; her parents Giovanni and Rosina Ambrose; sister Emma DeLuca; and sister-in-law Anna Ambrose. Teresa will be sadly missed by her three children: Rina, Attilio, and Peter; adoring granddaughters: Rachel and Olivia Gray; stepsons: Edgar and Uwe Fischer; brothers and their wives: Silvio and Nella Ambrose, Giuiseppe Ambrose, Luigi and Gina Ambrose; her sister Rita and brother-in-law Ernesto Vence (Italy); and brother-in-law Battista DeLuca (Welland). She also leaves behind a large, loving family and many friends. Funeral Services for the late Teresa Fischer will be held on Thursday, March 6th, 2008, leaving the Harbourview Funeral Centre at 9:00 a.m. for Funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Anthony`s Roman Catholic Church, 123 Hilldale Road, celebrated by Rev. Fr. Lino Santi. A Private Interment will take place at a later date in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with Vigil Prayers the same evening at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Teresa`s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or to the Canadian Diabetes Association Northwestern Ontario. SMYTH, Harvey Lambert 2008-03-03 Harvey Smyth, aged 89 years, of 199 Academy Drive, Thunder Bay, died peacefully Feb. 29th 2008, at St. Joseph‘s Care Group with his loving family at his side. He was born January 26th 1919, in Fort William Ontario. Survived by wife Lauretta (Breckon) Smyth; one brother, Stanley George Smythe (wife Bev) Detroit; one daughter, Marilyn Bellin (husband Doug); two sons, Ron (of Toronto presently in Argentina), and Gary (wife Pauline) of Kelowna BC; grandchildren, Ryan Bellin (wife Twyla), Tracey Wilson (husband Jack) of Thunder Bay, Ben Smyth (wife Sarah) of Windsor, and Eric Smyth of Kelowna, and great-grandchildren, Kaylee Busniuk and Lillian Rose Smyth. Also survived by sister-in-law Jessie Smyth , and several nieces and nephews, especially Loraine, Coleene and families. Predeceased by his parents Wilbert Granville Smyth (1946), Alice Jane (Fielding) Smyth (1971), former wife Betty (1999), brother Wilbert Fielding Smyth (1988), sister Myrtle Alice Hill (2007), brothers-in-law, Neil Hill, Joe, Bob, and Vernon Breckon, sisters-in-law, Dorothy Sephton, Mary Trumbull, and Marjorie Frizzley. Harvey was a proud veteran and a part of the "www.memoryproject.com". He was well known for his singing abilities, first with Maurice Jackson and the All Girl Orchestra in the 40’s and 50’s, and many other local bands. He was a founding member of the Elks Klown Band and an active member of the Elks Club, becoming Exalted Ruler, Grand Lodge District Deputy, and Grand Historian. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion. He was one of the many people who promoted Pee Wee hockey through the Elks. Harvey was a campaign manager for Walter Assef and Jack Masters. Harvey worked as a conductor for CP Rail from 1940-1979 and was also a long-time Union member and Officer. After retirement, he was instrumental in creating the railway display at the Waterfront, and was National Treasurer and Recording Secretary of the CP Pensioners Group. He worked tirelessly trying to bring VIA Rail passenger service back to Thunder Bay and solve the LIO problem for the pensioners. Services will be held Thursday, March 13th, 2008 at the Elks Hall, Syndicate Ave beginning at 12:30pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Elks Children‘s Fund or the Northern Cancer Research Foundation would be appreciated.

CONIBEAR, John Kenneth (Ken) - In loving memory of Ken Conibear, who died on Sunday, March 2, 2008. Much loved husband of 56 years of Margaret (Dickout) Conibear. Father of Richard, Garson, and Paul (wife Darbie) of West Vancouver. Grandfather of Alexandra, Kylie and Kevin, West Vancouver. Son of late Archibald and Kathleen (Ware) Conibear. Ken was born in Ingersoll, On, July 6, 1925. He served in the Canadian Army in the Army of Occupation. Graduate of University of Toronto, 1951, with a B.Sc. in Mining Geology. Ken was a member of the Professional Engineers of Ontario. Ken and Marg moved to Sudbury in 1952 when Ken came to work as a mine engineer for INCO. After a very successful career spanning 33 years he retired in 1985. Ken loved their “camp“ at Honora on Manitoulin and enjoyed winter holidays in warm places. He was an active member of Trinity United Church, Garson. Known for his great sense of humour & generosity he will be greatly missed but fondly remembered.
