MacDONALD, Mabel Jean "Jeannie" - 73, Coxheath, passed away peacefully in the company of family on March 1, 2008, in Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto, Ont. Born in Mt. Pleasant, N.B., Jeannie was a daughter of the late Earl and Florence Tompkins. She is survived by daughter, Mary Jane and husband David Toles, Toronto; son, Tom and wife Darlene, Antigonish, grandchildren, Graham and Julia MacDonald and Jennah and Jayden Toles; sisters, Irene Tompkins, Mt. Pleasant, and Elda (Bob Sinclair), Moncton, N.B.; brother, Raymond Tompkins (Marilyn), Mt. Pleasant; cousins, Betty Ann (Richard) Culberson, Waterville, N.B., and Wayne (Judy) Anderson, Chelsea Que. Besides her parents, Jeannie was predeceased by her beloved husband, Bill MacDonald. Jeannie treasured her early years on the farm in Mt. Pleasant, returning for visits would be an important part of her life. Jeannie graduated from Teachers' College in Fredericton in 1951. She would soon buy her first car and would later happily recall that time, "I had freedom and my wings!" She would uphold this adventuresome spirit for the rest of her life. Jeannie taught at several elementary schools in New Brunswick and even drove across the country to teach for a year in Calgary, Alta. But it was while teaching in Sackville, N.B., that she met her husband, Bill MacDonald. They were married in 1962 and moved to Cape Breton where they would build a home and raise a family. Jeannie taught at Coxheath Elementary School, where she eventually became the music teacher. After many Christmas concerts and music festivals, she returned to the classroom to teach grades four and two. Jeannie retired in 1994. An inspiring teacher to all, she had received many hugs from former students. Always active, Jeannie enjoyed skating, swimming, badminton, skiing, bowling and especially walking. She shared with Bill a love for working outside and cherished her time in the garden. Knitting, sewing and reading were Jeannie's relaxation. Jeannie was a member of The United Protestant Church of Sydney River and enjoyed being in both the senior and hand bell choirs. Above all, she loved her time with her family and friends. Jeannie was proud of her accomplishments after the passing of her husband. It was always important for her to continue to do the things she wanted to do. This last chapter of her life was filled with wonderful friendships, traveling, visiting and taking care of her home. But her greatest joy was that she was now a much adored grandmother. "Granny" loved to play with her kids and her adventurous spirit lives in each of them. Although she will be dearly missed, Jeannie once again has her freedom and wings. A memorial service will be held in The United Protestant Church of Sydney River, at 11 a.m. Friday with Rev. Dana Feltmate officiating. Following the service, a reception will be held downstairs in the church hall.

NEUFELD, Wilmer October 29, 1933 - February 29, 2008 Our beloved father and grandfather passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family in Abbottsford, B.C. on Friday, February 29, 2008 at the age of 74 years. Wilmer was predeceased by his loving wife Jean of fifty-two years in June 2007. Survived by his children Cheryl (Greg) Szostakiwsky of Calgary, Douglas (Noreen) Neufeld of Langley, B.C. and Brian (Jill) Neufeld of Calgary. Also survived by five Grandchildren, Matthew and Nicholas Szostakiwsky of Calgary, Christopher and Carmen Neufeld of Langley, B.C., and Lindsay Neufeld of Calgary. Born on the family farm near Aberdeen, Saskatchewan, Wilmer was the only child of Jake (1898 - 1954) and Mary (1906 - 1988) Neufeld. He often shared, with great fondness, his life memories of growing up alone with loving parents and numerous cousins in the same community. The central role of the church ignited a passion for music, which remained throughout his entire life. At the age of twenty-one years, Wilmer returned from Briarcrest Bible Institute to work the family farm upon the untimely passing of his father. Wilmer remained a devoted and caring son to his mother throughout her entire life. Dad married Jean Schmidt on August 6, 1955. While serving in many capacities in the heating and air conditioning industry throughout his working life, his passion was always music. In 1970, Wilmer completed his studies at the School of Opera - University of Toronto and later that year, he moved his family to Europe where he embarked on a professional singing career. During this career, he appeared in lead Tenor roles at Opera houses in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and England. When his professional singing career ended, the family returned to Canada settling in Calgary until 1991, when Wilmer and Jean enthusiastically relocated to the Lower Mainland of B.C. During his all too short retirement and most pronounced after the death of Jean, Dad fought to maintain his independence. When ill health prevented this possibility he was appreciative and thankful for the help, support and small graces provided by both the family and care workers. At Wilmer's request, a formal Funeral will not be held. In honor of these wishes, a family viewing and celebration of his life was held on March 1, 2008 in Abbottsford and Langley. Dad's remains will be privately laid to rest with mother at McClure Road Cemetery in Abbotsford. JACINTO, Matilde Guilhermina (nee Da Silva) November 8, 1923 - March 1, 2008 It is with great sadness in our hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother Matilde Guilhermina Jacinto, on Saturday, March 1, 2008 at the age of 84 years. Matilde Jacinto was born in Faial Azores, Portugal on November 8, 1923. She came to Canada with her young family in 1958 to join her husband Jose and settled in Calgary. WALKER, John D. passed away peacefully in the presence of his family at the Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto on March 2, 2008. He is fondly remembered by his beloved wife Diana (Hanly) Walker and his three loving children John (Anne), Joanne (Zayd) and Sandra (Andrew) and his grandchildren, Nadia (Nico), Jamal, Jasmyn, Simone, Jayclyn and Courtney. He was predeceased by his sisters Ruth Rae and Marge. There will be a small gathering of family and friends this Wednesday. Gagnon Dr Normand B. 1932 - 2008 Gagnon Dr Normand B. A Saint-Lambert le 2 mars 2008, à l’âge de 76 ans, après une brève mais intense lutte contre le cancer, Dr Normand B Gagnon s’est éteint. Notre chef bien aimé, notre leader, a été appelé vers d’autres projets. Il laisse dans le deuil son épouse Ginette (Desaulniers), ses filles Isabelle (Peter Locke) et Julie (Hugues Excoffier), ses petits-enfants Emanuelle et Etienne, ses frères et soeurs, beaux-frères, belles-soeurs, son grand ami Jacques Lemire et de nombreux parents et amis. Un père, époux et grand-père attentionné et admirable, un Lambertois généreux et impliqué, Dr Gagnon a eu une carrière médicale notoire. Spécialiste en ORL et chirurgie cervico-faciale, il a été pendant de nombreuses années Chef du département universitaire à la faculté de médecine de l’Université de Montréal ainsi que Chef de département clinique des Hôpitaux Notre-Dame et Charles LeMoyne. Il a été examinateur pour le Collège des Médecins du Québec et du Collège Royal du Canada. Conférencier renommé et auteur prolifique, il a été publié maintes fois dans divers journaux médicaux nord-américain et éditeur-adjoint du « The Journal of ORL Head and Neck Surgery » et Président de la Société Canadienne d’Otolaryngologie. Une célébration de sa vie aura lieu à la chapelle du complexe le 9 mars à 11h45. RIPPER, Frank Arthur June 18, 1921 - March 1, 2008 With his love forever in their hearts celebrating a life well lived and loved, the family of Frank Arthur Ripper of Calgary announces his passing on Saturday, March 1, 2008, peacefully at the Foothills Medical Centre at the age of 86 years. Frank, a proud veteran of World War II, lived a rich and full life of dedication to his family, friends and community. His sharp inventive mind, creative hands and self-taught skills in the automotive field helped so many family and friends over the years. He could always be found in the garage working on something for someone. Frank leaves to cherish his memory a daughter and son-in-law, Wendy and Garry of Calgary; three sons and daughters-in-law, Malcolm and Elaine of Australia, Graham and Nadia of Toronto, ON, and Gary and Terry of New Westminster, B.C.; brother and sister-in-law, Sam and Joyce of British Columbia; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Barbara and Eric, Betty, all of British Columbia, and Rose and Frank of Calgary; as well as their extended families. McKEE, Fredrick Gilbert, OMM, CD - 72, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on March 2, 2008, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born to Nina and Paddy McKee in 1935, Fred grew up in Point St. Charles, Montreal, Que. In 1952, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy as a Signalman and was a qualified Navy Diver; he retired in 1985 as a Chief Petty Officer 1st Class. In 1980, he was selected as the Maritime Command Chief Petty Officer, and in 1982, he was selected as the Canadian Forces Chief Warrant Officer at National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa, having the distinction of being the first sailor to hold that post. In the last year of service, Fred served as the Cox'n for the 75th anniversary of Navy Tattoo which traveled across Canada. Of all the jobs Fred held in the navy, he always stated his favourite was his tenure as the Cox'n onboard HMCS Algonquin. In 1980, he was appointed to the Order of Military Merit in the grade of Member, and in 1982, was appointed to the Order again, in the Officer grade. In 1987, Fred was commissioned as a Lt. (N) in the Cadet Instructor List and was employed as the Regional Cadet Sea Training Officer Atlantic Region Headquarters in Halifax, where he earned a Vice Chief of Defence Staff Commendation for his hard work and dedication to Sea Cadets. He retired once again in 2000, achieving the rank of Lt.-Cmdr. "Retirement" was not a word in Fred's vocabulary; he had a passion for history and the navy, and attended university to further his education. He was a founding member and president of the Atlantic Chief's and Petty Officers Association, where his first project was the famous sailor statue which is currently displayed at the Maritime Museum on Halifax's waterfront. Fred was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Centennial Branch; the Admiral Desmond Piers Naval Association, and was very active in the Masonic Lodge, where he was the Past Master of Woodlawn Lodge 131 and Past District Grand Chaplain for Second Halifax County. Fred was also the Head Curator and Chief Archivist for the HMCS Sackville until his illness forced him to step down from that position. In addition to his other activities, Dad was a fitness buff; he loved long distance running. He ran two marathons and once ran the Cabot Trail. Traveling was another one of Dad's passions and he loved to drive his beloved Cadillac. He and Mum often would just take off and tour the Maritimes, visit friends in Florida or family in Quebec. Of all the places Dad traveled to, he had a particular fondness in his heart for the beautiful scenery and peacefulness of Fredericton Junction, N.B. Fred is survived by his beautiful and loving wife of 48 years, Bertha, who cared for his every need. Because of Bertha's tireless devotion and strength of character during his battle with cancer, Dad affectionately referred to her as his own "Saint Bertha of Langley". Fred is also survived by his two devoted and doting sons, Michael and Scott; daughter-in-law, Tanya; grandson, Thomas; brother, George and sister-in-law Anne; sister, Joyce Schaaf and brother-in-law Norbert. Fred was close to both his siblings and the family would especially like to thank them for their unwavering support during this difficult time. The family would also like to thank the many nurses and doctors at the QEII Palliative Care Unit. Dad achieved so much in his life, however he told his family that he did not want to be remembered for the accolades and accomplishments he received. He wanted to be remembered for what was inside his heart. He was a very humble, generous and thankful man who loved God, touched many lives, helped many people and loved his family dearly. He was a member of Steven's Road United Baptist Church, and was baptized into the faith in 2006. The family takes hope that Dad is now at rest with his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. We will meet you again in the sweet by and by, we love you so very much Dad. "Do not mourn that such a man died, but thank God that such a man lived". Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, with a Masonic service to be held at 6:30 p.m., both in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. Memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday in Steven's Road United Baptist Church. A reception will follow in the church. Private burial in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens.

Bob was born and raised in Chios, Greece, served as a Sergeant in the Greek Army, worked on Onassis's yacht, met Linda in Vancouver and later settled in Peterborough. Trained at George Brown College in the culinary program, Bob loved to cook and play host to his customers at the Royal Dolphin and the Shish-Kabob hut. HALLIDAY, Grace Ellen - Peacefully went to be with the Lord while surrounded by her family in the Palliative Care Unit at Bluewater Health Sarnia on Friday February 29, 2008. Grace Halliday age 63 of Wyoming, was the beloved wife of David Halliday. Loving mother of Timothy Halliday, Melody Halliday, Karen and Randy Kuykendall, and Kathryn Halliday. Cherished Nana to Austin Kuykendall and the anticipated Elizabeth Kuykendall. Grace was an instructor for the Canadian Red Cross and Heart and Stroke Foundation for over 20 years. She has trained countless nurses, hospital staff, firemen, and members of the general public with the skills to help save lives. She was a member of and served as chair of the Red Cross Disaster Management Team, all of this earning her many certificates of thanks and recognition. She was a member of Bluewater Baptist Church for over 29 years where she played the piano and organ, and taught Sunday school. The funeral service for Mrs. Halliday will be held on Tuesday March 4, 2008 at Bluewater Baptist Church, 1256 Wellington St. Sarnia at 11:00 AM. Interment to follow in Wyoming Cemetery.
