MERPAW, John Bernard “Bernie“ - Peacefully at St. Lawrence Lodge in Brockville on Monday, February 18, 2008, in his 92nd year. Veteran of World War II with the RCAF; and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 297 Cornwall and Armories. Bernard “Bernie“ Merpaw of Brockville, formerly of Summerstown, husband of the late Helen Marie Earle. Survived by his two children William “Bill“ (Margaret) Merpaw of Athens; and Allan (Lise) Merpaw of Brockville; and by his sister Rita Leroux. Predeceased by his brothers Tom, Ira, Alfie, Delbert and George. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren Bob, Peter, Ryan, Dan and Michelle, along with four great grandchildren. Resting at the WILSON FUNERAL HOME, 822 Pitt Street, Cornwall from 7 PM Wednesday, February 20th. BLOXHAM, William Norman (Bill) William Norman (Bill) Bloxham of Squamish, B.C. passed away Thursday, February 14, 2008 at the age of 77. Born in Banff and raised in Canmore, Alta. Predeceased by his first wife of thirty-seven years (Mary Jane Coleman), loving parents of their five children. Bill is remembered by Brent (Brenda) Bloxham, Paige (Mark) Butler, Marla Bloxham (Tom Boyce), Derek (Stephanie) Bloxham, Cara (Joe) DoSerro, sister Patricia (Roy) Ravenhill. Also Grandchildren; Mike, Cheryl, Alan, Tyler, Megan, Zachary, Alexis, Marisa, Brittany, Kyle and Kassandra. Bill will also be fondly remembered by many family and friends from coast to coast and all of those whose lives he touched in his special way. Bill joined the RCMP in 1948 serving twenty-nine years between the provinces of Saskatchewan, Manitoba and B.C. After retiring from the RCMP in 1976, Bill joined the municipal staff of Squamish, eventually becoming the City Administrator. In 1996 Bill married Elizabeth Larson, also of Squamish, where they began their lives together. Bill enjoyed life moving from community to community meeting new people along the way. Along with his many interests, Bill enjoyed his experiences with various energy healing modalities and interspecies communications particularly relating to his love for animals. Bill made the most of what life had to offer, enjoying his family and many friends. While he knows that this parting is a part of life, Bill believes that this is the beginning of a new chapter where he will be re-united with those who have gone before him. Bill, Lis and their families wish to thank those who have shown their love and support during this difficult time. A special thank-you to Dr. Savage and the staff at the Vancouver Cancer Clinic, Dr. Richard Cudmore and the staff at the Squamish General Hospital, Pam Lang and the staff at the Squamish Palliative Care Unit, Peter Hotston and the Squamish Hospice Society and the many others who offered their love and support. MARTIN, Emil May 11, 1924 - February 15, 2008 Emil was born at Hanna, Alberta to Daniel and Sophia (Patzer) Martin, the fourth son and second youngest child in a family of eight. The family moved from Rockyview District to Parr District, south of Hanna in 1926 where Emil started school at the age of six. In the fall of 1933, the family moved east of Huxley to the Ashcroft District. Here Emil attended Ashcroft School where he completed his formal education. Again in 1941 the family moved to a farm in the Creekside District southwest of Trochu. It was during this time Emil and his brother Len went into the trucking business, buying their own truck. In 1944 Emil followed his parents to Calgary. Emil first worked for Canadian Pacific Railways, but was forced to resign due to health reasons. This is when he found employment with Canada Post until his retirement. Emil enjoyed visiting with family, friends and outdoor buddies. He also enjoyed birds and squirrels, his indoor plants and traveling. Emil is survived by one sister Ella Bogner, wife Kay and two sisters-in-law. Emil was predeceased by his parents Daniel and Sophia Martin; brothers Albert, Reynold, Oscar and Len; sisters Bertha Phahl and Martha Smiley; and his wife Pat. WILKIE, Olga Schroeder - November 5, 1918 - February 15, 2008 Peacefully at the Kingston General Hospital, with her family by her side at the age of 89. Olga will be deeply missed by her husband of 58 years, Russell Wilkie. Beloved mother of Stephen Wilkie (Kathy), Douglas Wilkie (Elena) and Anna Wilkie Egli (Bobby). She will be sadly missed by her grandchildren Amber, Gregory, Dylan, Allison, Caitlin, Emma, Ethan and Sarah, as well as her brother, Wilbur Schroeder. She is predeceased by her brothers Paul, Rudy, Elmer and Gilbert and by sisters Lily and Helen. Olga was raised on a farm near Peotone, Illinois and served in the U.S. Women's Army Corps until she married Russ in the Canadian Army and moved to Quebec City. They were then stationed in Whitehorse and Downsview and Fort Henry Heights, until they made their home in Amherstview. Olga was a loving wife and a dedicated homemaker who loved to care for her family. She loved gardening, sewing, quilting, needlework, travel and bridge. She volunteered her time at the KGH Cancer Clinic for over 20 years and was an active member of Edith Rankin Memorial UCW for many years. A memorial service was held at Edith Rankin Memorial United Church on Monday, February 18, 2008, officiated by Reverend Micheline Montreuil. Olga will return home to Peotone, Illinois for interment later in the spring. MacDOUGALL, Mary Euphemia "Phemie" MacDOUGALL, Mary Euphemia "Phemie" - The Points, Richmond Co. In her 100th year, Phemie MacDougall passed away peacefully in Taigh Solas, Northside General Hospital, on Sunday, February 17, 2008. Born on September 7, 1908, in Mira Ferry, Cape Breton, she was a daughter of the late Neil D. and Margaret (MacDonald) MacCuish. During her early years she taught school in various places and then moved to the United States in the late 1940's where she met and married Daniel MacDougall of The Points, West Bay, Cape Breton. Phemie was employed with the Jordan Marsh department store in Boston, Mass., for over 25 years. Phemie and Daniel retired to their cottage (Quiet Place) at The Points and enjoyed life there for many years. She is survived by stepdaughter, Joan Littlefield, and stepsons, Donnie and Bruce, all in the United States, along with several stepgrand- children and numerous nieces and nephews, including Florence (Cameron) Coletti, Lower Sackville, and Don (Margie) Cameron, Louisbourg. Besides her husband, who passed away in 1986, Phemie was predeceased by brother, Fraser; brothers, Alexander and Donald John in infancy; sister, Christine (Gordon) Cameron; sisters, Annabel and Mary Belle in infancy. The family extends sincere thanks to Willena and Alvin Ross and their family and the staff of Taigh Solas for the wonderful care given to Phemie over the past eight years. She was treated with dignity and respect and considered part of the family at both homes. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. CUTHIELL, Ethel Jean November 8, 1921 - February 16, 2008 Ethel Jean Cuthiell of Calgary passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 16, 2008 at the age of 86 years. Ethel was born on November 8, 1921 in Great Village, NS. She began her teaching career in Nova Scotia, in a one-room school. In 1946, she married John (Jack) Cuthiell and they moved to Edmonton, where they raised their family. Ethel returned to her love of teaching, and taught elementary school for eighteen years in Edmonton. In 1971 she obtained her hard-won B.Ed. In 1979, she and Jack retired to Qualicum Beach, BC where they enjoyed twenty happy years, making countless friends and travelling extensively. Ethel devoted a great deal of time and energy to St. Stephen's United Church. In 2000 they moved to Calgary to be closer to their children. Ethel will be remembered by her family and friends as a gentle, loving, generous, and humble person, who faced the challenges of life with remarkable strength and dignity. Ethel is survived by her son David (Leslie Baker); her daughter Nancy Clegg; and grandchildren Jeffrey, Kyle, Ewen, and Lindsay. She is also survived by her brother Truman (Vivian) Layton of Halifax, NS; as well as several cousins, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Jack, son Richard and brother Paul Layton. Ethel's children would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of the Beverly Centre for their kindness to Mom while she was there. Born in Helden, Holland in 1915, daughter of the late Regina Trienekens and Gerardus Vanlier. Loving mother of Nellie van der Venne (Adrian) of Leamington, Gerda Buzan (Karlo) of Melbourne, Agnes Lamers (Willie) Blenheim, Martin Steeghs (Regina) Whitby, Mia Saddington (Hal) of Chatham, John Steeghs (Colette), Anita Steeghs of Port Bruce and Jeannette Roach (Ron) of Ottawa. Sadly missed by 21 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren and 2 step great grandchildren. Also sadly missed by a son- in-law Louis van den Bogaart, by 4 sisters and one brother and by many relatives in Holland. She is predeceased by a daughter Gina van den Bogaart (2006), 2 grandchildren; Kelley Roach (1990) and Shawna Roach (1986) and one brother in 1988. MURRAY, Douglas "Doug" Campbell May 30, 1972 - February 16, 2008 It is with great sorrow that the family of Douglas "Doug" Campbell Murray of Calgary, announce his sudden passing on Saturday, February 16, 2008 at the age of 35 years. Doug was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed snowmobiling, motorcycling, hunting, rock and ice climbing - he died in the mountains he so loved. Doug always stressed the importance of living life to the fullest, and did so in his too-short time with us. Gifted with his hands, he seemed able to create almost anything, be it in wood, stone or metal, and turned that love of working with his hands into a thriving contracting career. Our lives are forever diminished by his absence, but he will always be in our hearts. Until we see you again.. What would I give to clasp his hand, His happy face to see, To hear his voice and see his smile, That meant so much to me. LONDON, CHARLES WILLIAM ALEXANDER (1942-2008) - It is with sadness that the family of Charlie London, 65, of Saint John, announces his passing at the Saint John Regional Hospital on February 15, 2008, after a brief but tragic illness. Born in Saint John, N.B. on September 25, 1942, Charlie was the son of the late Charles and Mae (Richard) London, and the husband of Patricia Ann (Kerr) London. Charlie was a faithful employee of Canada Post for over 30 years, retiring in 2002, preceded by dedicated service to the offices of Saint John Shipbuilding and NB Housing. He was a member of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes (RAOB). In his spare time, Charlie enjoyed being the cook at the hunting camp, fishing, bowling, playing darts, and sharing a good laugh with his large extended family and close friends. In addition to his wife, Pat; Charlie is survived by his son, Chris (Nadine Mullin) of Saint John; and daughter, J. Ashley (Randy) MacNeill of Grove Hill. He is beloved Papa to grandchildren, Justin Dalling (Ashley Rioux) and Aidan and Natalie London. Also survived by three brothers, Edward (Donna), Frederick (Joyce) and Wayne (Kathy Scovil); and eight sisters, Norma (Fred) Gilliland, Jean (Ian) Lamont, Frances (George) Lamont, Donna (Sholly) Mills, Ann (Doug) Foster, Janice (Gary) Ross, Gail (John) Ross, and Wanda (Eric Lawlor) London; and brother-in-law, Donald Geldart. Predeceased by an infant sister, Theresa; and an older sister, Shirley Geldart. His songs and warm laughter will be fondly remembered by numerous nieces and nephews. TRIPARGOLETTI,Pasquale 2008-02-19 Mr. Pasquale Tripargoletti age 82 years of Winnipeg Avenue passed away suddenly in Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre on Tuesday, February 19, 2008. Born February 2, 1926 in Paterno Calabro, Cosenza, Italy, where he took up agriculture on the family farmland. On April 17, 1951 he immigrated to Port Arthur to seek a better life. He immediately started working on railroad construction and maintenance with the R.F.Welch Company throughout Northwestern Ontario. On October 18, 1952 , Maria Ceci immigrated to Canada and married Pasquale on January 24, 1953. In that same year, in order to better provide for his family, and work closer to home, he took a position with the Abitibi Paper Company, at the Provincial Paper Mill where he worked as a papermaker, equipment operator and assistant millwright until he retired on July 1, 1987. Hard work, punctuality and dedication were not strange factors in his outlook on life and contributed greatly to his success in the workplace. On April 1, 1965, Pasquale became a Canadian Citizen, however he never forgot his roots in Italy, nor his culture. He returned to Italy numerous times for a visit with his family to ensure that his family would remember their roots and their culture. Pasquale was a great family man and a well respected individual in the community. He always gave his time unselfishly to others, especially his family. There was no favourite past time for Pasquale than to spent time watching actitivies his grandchildren and great grandchildren were taking part in. His home, family, garden, grandchildren and great grandchildren gave him much enjoyment over the years. Pasquale was always happiest when surrounded by his family and friends, and when working with them making cultural foods like salamis, sausages, supressata, wine and garden preserves. Pasquale was a longtime member of the Italian Mutual Benevolent Society, the Gran Sasso Club and Gruppo Alpini of Thunder Bay. Survived by his wife Maria, daughter Anna and son-in-law Frank Tropea, daughter Elena and son-in-law Bruno DiGregorio, four grandchildren Vince (Luigina) and Frank (Kailey) Tropea, and Agnes-Maria (fiance Doug Diebel) and Maria-Tina DiGregorio and three great grandchildren Michayla, Olivia and Luka Tropea. Also surviving is his sister Adelina of Thunder Bay, and two sisters Angelina Tripargoletti and Antonietta Salvador in Italy. Also survived by numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Michele and Maria, brother Ernesto and sister Teresina Magna Funeral services for the late Mr. Pasquale Tripargoletti will be held on Thursday, February 21. 2008 leaving the EVEREST FUNERAL CHAPEL, 299 Waverley Street at Algoma at 8:50 AM to St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church for the Funeral Mass at 9:30 AM. BACKEN (nee Salminen), Lempi Ida Elizabeth 2008-02-19 It is with deep sadness the family of Lempi Ida Elizabeth Backen (nee Salminen) announce her passing on February 18, 2008 at Grandview Lodge. Born in Port Arthur, ON on December 11, 1911, Lempi was a lifelong resident of Current River, working at the Dewe Avenue Store for many years. She took great pride in her home and family and had a passion for tending to her beautiful flower gardens, which were admired by the people passing by. She also enjoyed knitting and crochetting many beautiful keepsakes over the years. Lempi leaves us all with many cherished memories. She will be lovingly remembered by her son Mel (Marilyn) Backen, son-in-law Rick Belle, daughters-in-law Stella Backen and Cindy Backen, grandchildren: Jeff Backen, Andrew (Kari) Backen of Cincinnati, OH, David (Christy) Belle of Airdrie, AB, Lance Backen and Jessica Backen of Ottawa, ON, sister Violet (Ted) Munson of North York, ON, and brother Edwin Salminen. WILLIAMS, Gordon E. 2008-02-19 Gordon E. Williams, son of Walter & Violet Williams was born at Orrell Park, Liverpool, England. He passed away at St. Joseph‘s Hospice on February 17th, 2007 in the presence of family members. His remains were cremated as previously planned. Interment took place at a private graveside service. Gordon enlisted with the C.F.C. in 1940 and spent the war years in Scotland. A member of the C.G.H. Union. He was predeceased by his parents and wife Marie. He is survived by his sister (here) and brother Alan, Oregon, U.S., nieces & nephews here and various locations in Canada and U.S.A.

SKRYPUCH, Lidia (née Krawchuk) - June 18, 1927 - February 17, 2008 - It is with great sorrow that the family announces the passing of Lidia Skrypuch, on February 17, 2008 at the Brantford General Hospital. Born in Zolochiw, Ukraine. Only child of Wolodymyr Krawchuk, a magistrate, and Michelina, a school teacher, Lidia studied ballet and pharmacy. World War II engulfed their homeland. In 1944, the family escaped by walking through land mine studded countryside and riding in open boxcars with nothing to eat but a few potatoes they could find in abandoned farmers fields. They narrowly avoided being taken to a concentration camp by bribing a guard. They took refuge in a displaced person's camp in Austria. Lidia took on menial jobs to help make ends meet. While in exile in Austria, she met John and they married in a 1949 and came to Canada shortly after. They lived briefly in Montreal and London, then she and John moved to Brantford in 1954 where John began his medical practice. Lidia managed his office for 41 years. Lidia was an award-winning director and choreographer for the Ukrainian dancers for Brantford's Village Ukrania for eighteen years. She was also a long-time president of the Ukrainian Catholic Women's Auxiliary in Brantford, raising money for the church in a variety of ways, including writing and publishing a cookbook. Pope John Paul II presented Lidia with the Medal of the Holy Cross for her outstanding service to the Ukrainian Catholic Church and the Vatican. She was also presented with a Centennial Citation for meritorious service in the City of Brantford by Mayor Bowen. Lidia was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She was a fabulous cook and a gracious hostess. Her tortes were legendary. She expected the best of everyone and always gave the best of herself. Loving wife of Dr. John Skrypuch. Sadly missed by sons Orest and Roman and their wives Marsha and Lori. Loving baba of Neil, Daniel and Nicole. Dear daughter of the late Wolodymyr and Micheline Krawchuck. She will be missed by her friends and family in Brantford, Toronto, Detroit, Ukraine and Florida.
