MAKKY, Julius Of Calgary, passed away on Sunday, January 27, 2008 at the age of 62, after a fourteen month battle with cancer. With great sadness, he leaves behind Louise, his wife of thirty-four years, and his sons Greg and Curtis. Born in Slovakia, he immigrated to Canada in 1968. His employment began in the Crowsnest Pass, then on to Lethbridge Junior College, then to Calgary, where he was employed by Barber Industries, later to become part of Foremost Industries. He progressed from welding, to order desk (mining), mechanical design, Manager of Barber Drills, Product Manager of Foremost Dual Rotary Drills and International Sales. Predeceased by his parents, he is survived by his brother Peter, and sisters Magda and Stefania, all of Slovakia, many nieces, nephews, and cousins, and his cousin Magdalena Behan of Calgary (husband Steven). His family wishes to sincerely thank Dr. Brano Behan and Dr. Srinivas Chakravarthi of Bay City, Michigan. MELCHER, Adolf - November 7, 1941 - February 9, 2008 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Adolf on February 9, 2008 at the Foothills Hospital at the age of 66. Adolf is survived by his wife of forty-three years, Sheila, his three sons David, Dean (Cheryl), Jeff (Amanda), his four grandchildren Brianna, Cassandra, Shyanna and Mackenna, his mother Philippine Muller, his brother Peter (Debbie) of Edmonton, and many nieces and nephews. Adolf was predeceased by his father Georg in the Ukraine in 1998, his brother Wally in 2007, and his stepfather Heinrich in 2007. Adolf worked for the City of Calgary Transit Department for thirty-three years and made many friends while driving the route 6 and the route 17. He retired in January of 2007. The family would like to thank the staff of the Foothills Hospital Emergency, and the nurses and doctors of Unit 62. TOTH, Ludmila Anna January 16, 1922 - February 10, 2008 Ludmila Anna Toth passed away peacefully in Calgary on February 10, 2008 after a brief illness. She was predeceased by her husband Koloman in 1999. Lovingly remembered by her daughters, Ludi Schlee, Anna Maria Toth, and Elizabeth Ball; sons-in-law, Tony Schlee, Gary Ritland; grandchildren, Joseph, Jane, Raymond, Christopher; brother Jozef Hatala; as well as numerous family members and friends. Robert "Bob" McLeod WESTCOCK, NB - Robert "Bob" McLeod, 62, of Westcock, NB, passed away peacefully at the Sackville Memorial Hospital on Sunday, February 10, 2008, with his loving wife Juliette by his bedside. Born in Sackville, he was the son of the late Carl and Marjorie (Hicks) McLeod. Bob will be sadly missed by Juliette, his family and friends. Bob was so devoted to his wife and family. Having worked as a carpenter all of his life, he truly loved his work. He was an avid gardener, bird watcher and had a great fondness for horses and the horse community. Bob so enjoyed walking, especially at the Waterfowl Park and Beech Hill. He took an active interest in his community and the history of the area. The people of St. Ann's Church were close to his heart and Bob loved going to the Wednesday morning "Coffee In The woods" to socialize with all of his friends. Survived by his wife, Juliette (Marceau) of Westcock; his son, Alexander, Sackville; six brothers, Dick (Juanita), Westcock, Don (Dale), West Palm Beach, Florida, Alan (Delores), Font Hill, ON, Norman (Yolande), Guelph, ON, Charles (Jan), Westcock, and Ian (Barbara) Amherst; five sisters, Jean (Brian) Estabrooks, Sackville, Doris (Bob) McWilliams, Long Creek, PE, Dianne (Don) Lee, Calgary, Janice Murphy, Saint John, and Judy Dixon, Amherst; several nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles. Born in Belldune, NB he was the son of the late Alphonse and Mary Anne (Pitre) Lanteigne. He was employed in construction throughout his working life and was affiliated horses and car racing. Besides his wife he is survived by his son, Alphonse John 'Joey' (Francine) of Bathurst, step-children, Peter (Maria), Lolita (Larry), Lucerica (Brent), Mitchell (Paula), Stg. TOBIN, W. DOUGLAS - It is with great sadness that his family wishes to announce the passing of William Douglas "Toby" Tobin C.D. of 15 Alpine Street, Saint John, NB, on February 11th, 2008 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born at Sydney Mines, NS, on September 6th, 1920, he was a son of the late William and Mary (MacDonald) Tobin, and husband of the late Verna Theresa (Doucette) Tobin who predeceased him in 1992. Besides his wife and parents, Doug was predeceased by a sister, Winnifred (aged six) and a brother Garfield (aged six months). Toby served in the Canadian Army Active Force under the Cape Breton Highlanders for five and one half years during World War II, serving in England and Italy while attached to the Canadian Auxiliary Services. During his time in Italy, he participated in the 1944 Commonwealth Games, winning several medals in track and field events. After the war, he continued to serve as a member of the 1st Battalion RNBR Army Reserve, obtaining the rank of Company Quartermaster Sergeant. In his religious life, he was an active member of St. John the Baptist Parish, the CYO, the Legion of Mary, and the Holy Name Society. Later at St. Ann's Parish, he was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus, Father Eugene O'Leary Council 6595. In recognition of his years of service, he received an honorary life membership. He was employed for many years with McAvity Crane Canada in Saint John. He was also active in various sports, both as a player and coach. He was co-founder of the Industrial Institutional Hockey League which later became the current East West Suburban Hockey League. Toby is survived by his sister, Elaine Tobin of North Sydney, NS; one cousin, Louise McKinnon (MacDonald) of Halifax, NS; as well as his ten children, Ann Marie Sautier (Edward) of Halifax, Paula Cormier (Jocko), Richard (Kathy), Robert (Esther), Miriam Irwin (Brad) of Ottawa, Ontario, Thomas (Carol), Theresa Arseneault (Jerry), William (Carol), Mary Golding (Chris), and Sandra Mazerolle (Ted); 28 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. His children acknowledge the sacrifices and love given to each one over his lifetime. Rest easy Dad!!!! We will miss you. CARTEN, FREDERICK JAMES It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of our father and grandfather, Frederick J. Carten Sr. of Royal Road, NB, husband of the late Annie (McLaughlin) Carten, on Sunday, February 10, 2008 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital at the age of 71. Fred will be sadly missed by his whole community as well as many customers who have known him throughout his 42 years of service with Fred Carten's Used Cars and Auto Wrecker. The last 17 years of which was run with son, Casey. He will be sadly missed by all his friends in the car business. He was one of the best people you would ever want to know. SYWAKOWSKY, Paul Paul Sywakowsky, beloved husband of Galina, passed away suddenly at his home on February 8, 2008 at the age of 80 years. Elle était la belle-soeur : feu Jeanne D'Arc (feu Eddy Cloutier), feu Emelda (feu Eugène Talbot), Jeannette (feu Hervé Poulin), feu Alfreda (feu Albert Lapointe), feu Andréa, Emmanuel, feu Germaine (feu Ernest Poulin), Réal (Rose Trachy). Elle laisse également dans le deuil plusieurs neveux, nièces, cousins, cousines et ami(e)s. Un remerciement spécial au personnel du 1er étage du Centre de santé et de services sociaux de Beauce pour les bons soins prodigués à notre mère. HUDSON, Ruth Alice (nee Agate) March 11, 1926 - February 9, 2008 Ruth Alice Hudson passed away suddenly on February 9, 2008 at the age of 81 years. Ruth was born in Bassano, AB on March 11, 1926. She was raised in Tudor, and attended school in Calgary at Sunnyside Elementary School and Western Canada High School. She is survived by her sister Fay Sutter. Ruth was the beloved mother of one son Gary Hudson (Margaret); two daughters, Carol Howell (Bob) and Brenda Pullman (Dave); grandchildren Nicole Hudson, and Christopher and Sarah Pullman. She was predeceased by her husband Herb, whom she had married on April 3, 1948. HARRITY, Gordon Eric HARRITY, Gordon Eric - 96, after a brief illness, passed away in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro, on Tuesday, February 12, 2008. Born in Saint John, N.B., on May 8, 1911, he was the only son of the late Michael H. and Gertrude (Robinson) Harrity. He lived most of his life in the north end of Saint John and in Lakewood Heights. He moved to Truro 27 years ago. He was christened in Mission Anglican, belonged to St. Luke's Anglican Church in Saint John, and was an adherent of First United Church in Truro. He enjoyed many summers at Ragged Point on the shores of the Saint John River. In his earlier days he was a member of the Saint John Power Boat Club and spent many enjoyable hours cruising on the river. He was also a long-term member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge. He retired in 1975 as a stock controller at Red Rose Tea Company in Saint John. As an avid handyman, he enjoyed building and repairing anything in the house as well as restoring and refinishing old furniture. He took much pride in sharing these accomplishments with young and old. Gordon was fond of all animals and their welfare, especially dogs. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (MacQuarrie); his son, Robert E. (Shirley); grandson, Jason (Lisa); granddaughter, Jana (Brad) Kirkpatrick; three great-grandchildren; cousins, Doris Morrisey and Ethel Flewelling, Saint John; brother-in-law, Malcolm (Charlotte) MacQuarrie; nieces and nephews, and many good friends. He was predeceased by his first wife, Rhoda Dykeman; sister, Alberta (Clarence) Mowry (Sarnia, Ont.); Phyllis Tebo (Ralph) (Saint John), and an infant sister. No visitation by request. Funeral service in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro, on Friday, February 15, at 11 a.m. with Rev. David MacNaughton and Rev. Gordon MacLean officiating. A service and burial will also take place in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery, Saint John, at a later date. YOUNG, Carl Maxwell YOUNG, Carl Maxwell - 75, Annapolis Royal, formerly of Belleisle, passed away Sunday, February 10, 2008, in Annapolis Community Health Centre, with his family by his side. Born in Belleisle, he was a son of the late Hiram and Leona (Halliday) Young. Carl was a part-time farmer and truck driver. He was a milk man for many years with Farmers Dairy and in later years was employed with the Department of Transportation until his retirement. Carl enjoyed his family thoroughly and was proud of each and every one of them. He loved to attend exhibitions, especially to watch the horse pulls. He also enjoyed making his rounds to the fish plant, Tim Hortons and Al's Café to have coffee with the boys. He is survived by his loving wife, Faye (Bent); sons, Randy (Kim), Coldrook; Phillip (Vi), Belleisle; daughters, Debbie (Ron), Granville Centre, and Janice (Sheldon), Morse Road; grandchildren, Kyle, Ryan, Whitney, Natalie, Jamie, Craig, Katie, and Jake; great-grandson Dylan; sisters, Christina Sutherland, Betty Bishop, and Maureen Buckingham (Clayton); also many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by brothers, twins in infancy Reginald and Gerald, and Stewart; sisters, Loretta and Joyce; niece, Brenda. There will be no visitation by request. A memorial service will be held Wednesday February 13, at 2 p.m. in St. Mary's Anglican Church, Belleisle, with Rev. Canon Margaret Hall officiating. HEARD, Frederick "Eric" HEARD, Frederick "Eric" - (C2er/MWO Mar. Eng.) (R.N./RCN, Ret'd). Age 78, Halifax, died February 12, 2008, in Parkstone Enhanced Care, Halifax. Born in Hillingdon, Middlesex, England, he was the eldest son of the late Arthur Frederick and Nellie (Green) Heard. He joined the Royal Navy in London, England, in October 1947, serving until February 1995. In March of that year, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy in HMCS Niobe, London, England, and retired in October 1976, with a total naval service of 29 years. Following his retirement from the Royal Canadian Navy, he was employed as Operating Engineer/Stationary Engineer, in the Heating Plants of the Halifax Shopping Centre, the London Life Insurance Building, the old Halifax Infirmary and at CFB Halifax (HMCS Stadacona). He was an active member of the Atlantic Chief and Petty Officers Association, a member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 142, Fairview, and a life member of the Chief and Petty Officers/Warrant Officer and Sargeant's Mess, Windsor Park. He enjoyed popular, classical, and "easy listening" music, took great pleasure in "Backyard" gardening, and claimed that the birds and "his" squirrels never went hungry. His interests included stamp and coin collecting. He is survived by his wife, Helen Catherine (Rowe) Heard. Also surviving are sister, Rita; brothers, Edward Robin, Phillip and Arthur, all in England; twin half-brothers, Eric, Port Coquitlam, B.C.; Arthur, England; many nieces and nephews. No visitation by request. Cremation has taken place under the care of J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax from where a memorial service will be held Sunday, February 17, at 2 p.m. His ashes will be scattered at sea at a later date. No flowers. LINDSAY, William "Andrew" LINDSAY, William "Andrew" - 80, Pictou, passed away on Sunday, February 10, 2008, surrounded by his family after a short illness. Born on October 20, 1927, in Lima, Peru, he was a son of the late Gerald and Gladys (Schofield) Lindsay. He was educated at St. Andrew's College, Ontario, and studied mechanical engineering in Glasgow, Scotland. He was an avid sailor and a keen sportsman, participating in curling, cross-country skiing and badminton. He was a member of the St. Andrew's Society and an enthusiastic Scottish country dancer. He was very community-minded and focused his incredible energy as a town councillor (and on everything else he undertook). He will be fondly remembered by his wife of 54 years, Helen; daughters, Mary Rose (Paul), Andrea (Tim), and Rhona (Hans), and son, Angus. Papapa will be sadly missed by his grandchildren, James, Christopher, Maximilian, Alexandra and Raphael. The family will receive visitors from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, February 15, at Pictou Town Council Chambers. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 16, at the DeCoste Entertainment Centre, Pictou. MARSMAN, Curtis MARSMAN, Curtis - 58, of Upper Hammonds Plains, passed away in the VG Site, QEII, on Sunday, February 10, 2008. Born in Upper Hammonds Plains, he was a son of the late Walter and Susan Marsman (Cain). He was an avid antique collector, gardener and sportsman. Curtis will be remembered as a world traveler frequently visiting his second home-Las Vegas. Curtis was self-employed for 30 years - owned and operated C&C Used Auto Parts. He was also employed with Hillcrest Volkswagon and the Department of Highways. Although a very private person, Curtis has touched many lives in a positive way. We will miss his strong yet compassionate character. MACLEOD, Everett John 1928-2008 Everett passed away at home in Pierrefonds, Quebec, on January 27, 2008, at the age of 79 years. Loving husband of Sharron MacKinnon (deceased). He leaves behind his daughters, Ellen MacLeod, Laura LaFortune (nee MacLeod), Mary Walsh (nee Strader), and sons, Bruce MacLeod, Randall MacLeod and Michael Strader, and all of their families. Everett was born in Grandview, P.E.I., to Bruce and Myrtle MacLeod (deceased). He is survived by brothers, Lloyd B. MacLeod (Audrey), Willard B. MacLeod (Bernice), George M. MacLeod (Joyce, deceased) and sister, Phyllis Dawson (Alexander). He was predeceased by his sister, Margaret MacLeod in 2007. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered. BILOSKI,Mary 2008-02-12 Mrs. Mary Biloski age 91 years, a resident of Roseview Manor passed away at her residence on Sunday, February 10, 2008. Born in Fort William, Ontario, Mary was a lifelong resident of the city. She was a member of the Port Arthur Prosvita Ladies Auxiliary and the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #947. Mary enjoyed knitting for the Red Cross, reading, caring for her plants and spending time with her family. Most recently she loved to play bingo and dance at Roseview Manor. Mary will be lovingly remembered by her children: Bernie (Dorothy), Don (Laurel), Evelyn (Frank) McKenzie, and Jane (John) Bliznikas, 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and 3 great great-grandchildren, two sisters Olga and Stella and brother Wally, dear friends Eileen Cameron and Jean Langen. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Bruno, son-in-law Roddy McKenzie, brothers Nick and John, sisters Anne and Jean. SHIELS, EDWARD JOHN B. - The death of Edward John B. Shiels of Sandy Point Road, Saint John, NB, occurred on Sunday, February 10, 2008 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Saint John on December 7, 1919 he was a son of the late Thomas and Alice (Morris) Shiels. Edward was a veteran having served overseas during WWII, his employment was with Schofield Paper as Internal Sales Supervisor and he enjoyed summers at Clifton Royal for many years. Survived by two sisters, Dorothy Breen and Ruth Squires, both of Saint John; and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by a brother, Ronald. LEGGATT, CATHERINE DOROTHY - on Monday February 11, 2008 in Toronto: Born March 16, 1932 in Chatham, New Brunswick: only child of Arthur James Leggatt and Beatrice May Groat. Dorothy was part of the extended Leggatt family, being the first of sixteen first cousins, 34 second cousins and 19 aunts and uncles. Dorothy lived with her grandmother Groat in Chatham during her early childhood, and attended St. Michael's Academy. She graduated from St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, Nova Scotia in 1951 after a stellar turn as President of the student theatrical group. She attended Law School at the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton. She was a member of the Maritime Championship Debating Team, and was the only woman graduate in 1954 to practice law. Dorothy practiced in Chatham, N.B. as a sole practitioner and as a Crown Attorney. She practised in Ontario with Jeffery and Jeffery of London; and Solway Wright in Ottawa; and as the first female General Counsel to the Toronto Port Authority, from which she retired in 1997. In Toronto she was active in theatrical, educational, architectural and historical activities. She volunteered with the Daily Bread Food Bank, St. Michael's Hospital and other community-based charities. Dorothy was an avid traveler all her life. Visitation will be on Friday, February 15 at 2:00 pm, with a funeral service at 3:00 p.m., followed by gathering of family and friends at the Rosar-Morrison Funeral Home and Chapel, 467 Sherbourne Street Toronto, (Sherbourne and Wellesley Streets). Interment of Dorothy's ashes will take place at St. Michael's Cemetery in Miramichi, New Brunswick at a later date. The family thanks the team that has been with Dorothy on her journey, Wendy Corber of CCAC, Karen Williamson of COTA, and in particular, the medical team at Perram House for the holistic and humanistic approach to Dorothy's palliative care needs, and particularly, Sonia Brown for her kind and attentive care during Dorothy's last few weeks. KOABEL, Alfred Edward – Passed away peacefully at Northland Pointe on Friday, February 8, 2008 in his 89th year.He was predeceased by his wife Dorothy (Shields) Koabel and his parents Anna (Mahagan) and Edward Koabel. He is survived by his daughter Linda Koabel, several nieces and nephews, special friend Beatrice Bayley and feline companion “Chico” Al was a life- long resident of Port Colborne except for time served in the Canadian Army in WWII. After the war Al worked as a mechanic at Inco until his retirement. In his youth, Al was always physically active and excellent at swimming, canoeing and ice skating. A car enthusiast, he enjoyed working and tinkering with his cars. Later on, he enjoyed socializing with friends and family over a game of horseshoes or a game of cards. He was an excellent dancer. He played by ear both the piano and the harmonica and was skilled at playing the spoons. Al's incredible memory made him an excellent raconteur. He entertained family and friends with accounts of ancient and modern history as well as personal anecdotes. Special thanks to the staff and volunteers at Port Place, Northland Pointe, for their care and friendship during his brief residence there. Cremation has taken place.
