MURPHY, MICHAEL DANIEL - The death of Michael Daniel Murphy of Hampton, husband of Catherine (O'Connell) Murphy occurred unexpectedly February 3, 2008 at his residence. He was born in Rexton in 1950, son of the late Daniel and Margaret (Markey) Murphy. Mike lived Fredericton area from 1959 - 1972 and Saint John 1972 - 1976 before moving to Hampton. He worked at Medjucks Furniture 1965-1977, Co-op 1977-1999 and Re/Max 1999-Present where he received numerous awards. Mike was currently the Deputy Mayor of the Town of Hampton and served on various town committees over the past number of years. He was a director with Help the Cops Help the Kids Minor Sports Benefit and coached the Hampton RCMP team for several years. He also coached the Hampton Indians Oldtimers Hockey Team and was instrumental in forming the Hampton Moosehead Junior Oldtimers Hockey League. Charter member of the Rotary Club of Hampton. Mike enjoyed his early morning coffee at Kozy Korner Restaurant and Holly's. He was an avid card player and enjoyed snowmobiling. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Catherine; one daughter, Katie Murphy, Hampton; one son Tim Murphy (Maureen McNulty and Patrick), Hampton; one sister, Sharon Ward (Gordon), Bass River, NB; one brother, Raymond Murphy (Claire), Rexton, NB; brother-in-law, Michael O'Connell (Marilyn Oldscamp), Campbellton; several nieces and nephews. DUFFY, GERALD PATRICK (GERRY) - Gerald passed away after a courageous battle with cancer at the Saint John Regional Hospital on February 3, 2008. Gerry was born in Amherst, Nova Scotia on February 19, 1956. He was the youngest son of Delmar Duffy and the late Diana (Hebert) Duffy. Survivors include his fiancee, Mary Lou Colpitts; and sons, BJ and Jamie; brother, James of Charlottetown PE; sisters, Phyllis Simons (Gord) of Amherst NS, Constance Carruthers of Charlottetown PE, and Lynn Welcher (John) of New Maryland, NB; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Martha; and brothers, Joseph and Charles. He will be sadly missed by Spook, Frosty and Sydney. Gerry worked with several businesses in Saint John. His most recent was CATSA at Saint John Airport. He was an avid fan of NASCAR and never missed a race. He also collected vintage cars. HENGST, Richard - December 28, 1939 - February 3, 2008 It is with heartfelt sadness that the family of Richard Hengst announce his passing at the Foothills Hospital surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 68. Those of us left to celebrate his life include, Janet, his wife of forty-three years; daughters Lisa (Cliff) Zimmer, Sheryl (Ron) Mantei, son Kevin (Arly) Hengst; grandchildren Cory, McKenzie, Janelle, Kyle, Chelsea, Olivia and Diego. Richard was born to William and Janette Hengst in the Netherlands. Richard is survived by brothers John, Bill, Dick and sister Sylvia and numerous nieces and nephews. Richard worked for the City of Calgary Transit Department for thirty-seven years. Richard enjoyed the country life. He loved restoring tractors and tinkering in his garage. Richard loved boating, snowmobiling, auctions and spending time with family. MERRIFIELD, Gertrude Mae 2008-02-05 Mrs. Gertrude Mae Merrifield, age 87 years, a resident of Thunder Bay, passed away in St. Joseph‘s Hospital, on February 2, 2008. She was born in Niagara Falls, New York on November 15, 1920 and married her husband Orval on December 25, 1940. Gertrude had worked at various jobs doing food preparation. She was one of the first in the area to develop a small business planting, harvesting and selling strawberries. Gertrude was always interested in art work and silk screening was just one her interests. She also enjoyed singing, playing the guitar and organ. Gertrude was a passionate reader and was particularly interested in religious history. She had a fondness for animals especially horses. Gertrude is survived by her daughter Kathleen (Sulo) Koivu and family, sons Donald and Edward, sisters Mae Martin, Verna Stevenson, Reta Johnson, brother Bill Russell, grandchildren Justin (Deanna), Jason, Joel, Jennifier, Sarah, David and Mark, great grandchildren Meghan, Sara, Rebecca, Chloe, Ethan, Deneen and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Charles Harvey and Catherine Russell, her husband Orval in 1986, sister Geraldine Stewart and brother Charles Russell. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 8, 2008 in Hilldale Lutheran Church at 11:00 am officiated by Rev. Arleen Berg. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday, February 7, 2008 from 6:00 – 8:00pm in the Blake Funeral Chapel. If friends desire, memorials to the Hilldale Lutheran Church Youth Group or the Lutheran Community Care “Street Reach Ministry” would be appreciated. BURNS, MURDOCK WALTER Murdock Walter Burns, 89, a World War II Veteran, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 1, 2008, at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital. Born in Marysville on May 31, 1918, son of the late Walter and Ida Mae (Sturgeon) Burns. In addition to his wife, the late Kathleen Stella (Bennett) Burns (September 2002), he was predeceased by his brother, Lindsay; and sister, Dorothy (Douglas) Bailey. Murdock is the last surviving member of his immediate family. He will be sadly missed by his son, Terence (Dianne) Burns of Fredericton; and his daughter, Rosemary (Len) Nason of Lincoln; grandchildren, Sherry (Chester) Eatmon, Laura (Mike) Peasey, Derrick (Franca) Nason; great-grandchildren, Chester, Amethyst, Johanna and Jacob Eatmon, Katharine and Lauren Peasey; brother-in-law, Douglas Bailey; and cousin, Eileen Hale of Fredericton; sister-in-law, Chloris Stewart of Lakeland Florida; brother & sister-in law, David and Lorna Cuffley; sisters-in-law, Astrea Matthews, Thelma Slingo and Freda Jellett, all of England; and many nieces and nephews in England. His early years in Devon were spent working at Neills farm and South Devon Fuel Company delivering wood and coal until he was 22. In 1940, he enlisted in the Canadian Army and was deployed to England where he remained until wars end. There he met and married Kathleen Bennett. Upon his return to Fredericton, he joined the Fredericton Fire Department where he spent the remainder of his working career, retiring in 1980. Many years were spent volunteering his time transporting handicapped children to and from school and delivering medications for Savages Drug Store. A quiet man, avid reader, story teller and sports enthusiast. He loved to reminisce about his growing up years in Devon, city landmarks and history of Fredericton. Extremely well read, he loved to talk about Canadian and American politics, and British history. He loved watching sports on TV, especially baseball, hockey, golf, tennis and football. You could ask him anything about these sports and he could tell you everything you needed to know about the players and how the game was played. A very kind and generous man who always was ready to offer a helping hand without any expectation of notice. He truly enjoyed the precious time he spent with his family and his inspiration will have an everlasting effect on all who knew and loved him. Visitation will be held at Bishop's Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 5, 2008, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 with the funeral service to be held on Wednesday, February 6, 2008, at 1:00 pm at Bishop's Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Father Gerry White and Pastor Steven Matthews. Interment will take place at a later date at the Forest Hill Cemetery. Active pallbearers are, Michael Peasey, Derrick Nason, Alvin Nason, Chester Eatmon, Donnie Clark and Bill Brewer. Honourary Pallbearers are James O'Neill, Herbie Hawkins and Lawrence Burden. Marie Claudia "Anita" Phillips 1947 - 2008 Anita Phillips, 60, of Irishtown, passed away surrounded by her family at The Moncton Hospital on Friday, February 1, 2008. Born in Toronto, she is the daughter of Yvette (Doucette) Brush and the late Samuel Edgar Brush. Anita was a movie buff and enjoyed singing, dancing and was a collector of music. A loving and caring wife, mother, daughter and sister, she will be deeply missed by her husband of 36 years, Eric Phillips; her son, Dave and his wife, Michelle Phillips of Riverview; her mother, Yvette Brush of Whitby, On; brother, Edward Brush and his wife, Carolynn of Oshawa, On; sister, Deanna Young and her husband, Robert of Peterborough, On; as well as many nieces and nephews. Patricia Lila Lee SACKVILLE, NB - Patricia Lila Lee passed away January 25, 2008 at Sackville Memorial Hospital surrounded by loving friends and students who supported her through her short illness. Professor emeritus Lee was a highly respected singer and musician who taught voice in the Music Department of Mount Allison University from 1982 to 1999. Patricia was born in 1934 in Odessa, Washington to Leslie Ward Lee, Supt of Schools, and Zella Green, a music instructor. Prior to joining the Mount Allison faculty Ms Lee received her Masters degree in Music from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. After moving to New York City in 1960, she soloed with the Amato Opera Theatre, was accepted into the Metropolitan Opera's Young Company, which toured the U.S. and Mexico, and joined the chorus of the Metropolitan Opera when it opened its new venue at Lincoln Center. In addition, Ms Lee taught voice privately in Sackville and also Amherst, Nova Scotia. Surviving are her half-sister, Margaret Fea; nephews, Daniel, David and Ronald Lee and Thomas Fea; nieces, Lori Gilmore, Kathy Grey and Barbara Hull; and grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased in death by her parents, L.W. and Zella Lee; a brother, Robert S. Lee; and half-brother, Leslie W. Lee. Cremation has taken place under the supervision of Jones Funeral Home, Sackville (364-1300) and burial will be beside her parents in Spokane, WA. By her request there will be no funeral or visitation. However, there is a reception on Tuesday, 4:30 to 6:30, for friends, guests and former colleagues at the Mount Allison University President's Cottage. A scholarship fund will be set up. JONES, VELLA BLANCHE (BURTT) The death of Vella Blanche (Burtt) Jones, wife of the late Glenwood Jones, of Burtts Corner, NB, occurred on February 2, 2008 at York Manor Nursing Home. Born on April 24, 1911 in Burtts Corner, NB, she was a daughter of the late Howard and Ora (Cooke) Burtt. Vella was a member of the Burtts Corner Church of Christ and was formerly a member of the choir and taught Sunday school for many years, also she was the past Secretary/Treasurer for fifty-five years and enjoyed helping with the children's Christmas pageants. She was also a member of the Burtt's Corner Ladies Progressive Conservative Group and past President of both the Burtt's Corner Senior Robin's Group and the Ladies Sewing Circle. She was the last remaining member of her immediate family. One of Vella's most cherished memories was attending one of the Queen's Garden Parties at Buckingham Palace in 1989. She is survived by her niece, Janet Jones (Aulden), Priscilla (wife of special nephew Douglas who died in May 2004); and several other nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, Vella was also predeceased by her sisters, Gladys Gilbey, Aletha Burtt, Bernice Gilby, Freda MacDonald, Eva Mahar, Lola Burtt; and brothers, Douglas, Gerald, Gifton and Douglas. Visitation will take place at Burtts Corner Church of Christ on Monday February 4, 2008 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. A Funeral Service will be held from the church on Tuesday February 5, 2008, at 2pm with Pastor Graham Crandall officiating. Interment will take place at the Burtts Corner Cemetery, at a later date. DROST, ZULA G. Zula G. Drost of Parker Road, Carleton County passed away February 2, 2008 at Carleton Manor. Zula was born at Hartfield in 1913, a daughter of the late Gertrude (Bragdon) Tompkins and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was a housewife and also worked with her husband, Roy on the family farm, even continuing to operate it herself following his death. Zula loved to garden and enjoyed traveling either on bus tours or with her family. She was a life member of the Northampton W.I. and a member of the Forever Young Club in Woodstock. She is survived by her children, Meredith Drost (Pat), Leigh Drost (Doris), both of Northampton, Mavis Spires (Gordon) and Grace Pryor (David), both of Newbridge; her grandchildren, Brian Drost, Sandra Watters (Wayne), Judy Drost (Dale), Carrie Spires (Dickie), Scott Spires (Sandra) and Lori Nye (Clinton); her great grandchildren, Michelle, Michael, Brandon, Jacob, Emma, Marissa, Kaylee and Caleb; several nieces and nephews. In addition to her mother, Zula was predeceased by her husband, Roy Drost in 1984; a sister, Geraldine Lenentine; and two brothers, Murray and Vernon Tompkins. Visiting hours were held at Flewelling Funeral Home, 585 Otis Drive, Nackawic on Sunday. Funeral service will be held from the funeral home chapel on Monday, February 4, 2008 at 2 p.m. with Rev.
