THORNBORROW, William “Bill“ Edward - It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Bill Thornborrow in his 72nd year, on Saturday, February 2nd 2008. Beloved husband and best friend of Dianne for 49 years. Loving father of Ginny Young of Mt. Pleasant, Brian (Yolanda) of Kitchener, and Lori (Brandon) Graves of Brantford. Special Papa to Cody Young, Jordan and Austin Thornborrow, and Nathan Graves. Dear brother of Janet Neal of Westport, Allen (Shirley) Thornborrow of Scarborough, Dawn (Colin) McClelland of Paris, Jack (Mary) Lewis of Paris, and Norma (Wayne) Roper of Ayr. Dear brother- in-law of Rev. Ken (Maureen) Jackson of Georgetown. Predeceased by his mother Jean Lewis (1990), and sister Barb Monroe (1997) and his brother Donald Thornborrow (2004). Bill's family was first and foremost in his life. He was an Elder and member of the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church. He owned and operated “William Thornborrow Trucking“ for over 25 years. Bill had a passion for gardening, photography and music. BOURGEOIS, Annie Catherine (nee Cooke) - Safe in God's arms at last, in her 69th year, Ann passed away at home with her daughter Rose Bourgeois, best friend Sue Gauthier and loyal companions Shadow and Dante. ESPOSITO, Raffaele May 20, 1922 - January 31, 2008 Raffaele Esposito, beloved husband of Adelina Esposito of Calgary passed away on Thursday, January 31, 2008 at the age of 85 years. Raffaele was born in San Giacomo di Cerzeto, Italy and served for ten years with the Italian Military police. He married Adelina Contino in 1940 and they immigrated to Canada in 1954. Raffaele worked for the City of Calgary for a short time, before becoming a barber and owning his own Barber Shop. He retired in 1982. Besides his loving wife Adelina, Raffaele is survived by one son and two daughters-in-law, Carlo and Kathy Esposito of Calgary and Marge Esposito of Airdrie; five grandchildren, Adam and Matthew (Natalie) Esposito of Calgary, Anna (Charlie) Lupo of Toronto, Rick (Irene) Esposito of Airdrie and Marco (Holly) Esposito of Lethbridge; six great-grandchildren, Larissa and Alessandro Lupo, Cody, Brandon, Stephanie and Tyler Esposito. He is also survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, Francesco and Pina Esposito and Paulo and Maria Esposito of Italy. Raffaele was predeceased by a son, Mario Esposito in 2006 and two brothers, Luigi and Rolando Esposito. GOCHEE, Lyndel Earl 1930 - 2008 Lyndel passed away quietly February 2, 2008 at the Foothills Hospital. He leaves behind his beloved wife Doreen; daughters Maureen (Keith) Riddle, Karen (Rob) Redel; grandchildren Jon (Pansy), Brian (Kristie), Stacey, Jeff (Wanda); great-grandchildren Matthew, Hanna, Elijah and father-in-law Edwin Walker. Lyndel worked in the aero engineering and sheet metal industries throughout his life, both locally and internationally and started his own business in Springbank and Calgary later in life. He treasured the close friendships he gained throughout his life. Lyndel had a special place in his heart for his wife and family and will always be fondly remembered and loved by them. HIEBERT, Leslie Alman (Al) July 4, 1918 - February 1, 2008 Al passed away on Friday, February 1, 2008. Born in Morse, Saskatchewan on July 4, 1918 Al grew up on a large farm near Herbert. He thrived on tending the farm, caring for stock, breaking horses and rodeo. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and served until the end of the war. He was honourably discharged after being stationed in Calgary, Regina and Halifax. After the war Al came to Calgary, married and started his family. Working as an autobody mechanic for over thirty-seven years he was well known and respected by those in the trade. His recreational activities included competitive men's fastball until age forty-five. Both snooker, golf and card games were enjoyed on many occasions with both family and the friends that he easily made with his amiable manner and admirable skills. Al, Dad and Grandpa will be missed by all including Helen Hiebert, children Rob (Sue) Hiebert, Les (Sharon) Hiebert and daughter Kathy Hiebert all of Calgary. He was the proud grandpa of Derek, Shannon, Chelsea, Paul and Jesse Hiebert. Al has been predeceased by his mother Anna (Toews) Hiebert and brother Andy and wife Freda Hiebert. We are grateful to the many people whose help and support made the last few years enjoyable and possible. With special thanks and gratitude, to all Al's companions and staff at the Confederation Park Lodge for the last six years. As well we are thankful to his family doctor Dr. Lia, Calgary EMS and the Foothills Medical Centre Emergency Department. Most recently to the staff on Units 61 and 81 of FMC. Lastly we are grateful that Al could be at the Southwood Hospice's peaceful surroundings and are thankful to the staff for their wonderful care. DIXON, Douglas Charles Peacefully, in the Arnprior Hospital, surrounded by his loving family, Saturday, February 2nd, 2008 in his 84th year, Doug Dixon passed away. Douglas Charles Dixon, born July 6, l924. Son of the late Irving and Elsie (Jensen) Dixon, New Denmark, N.B. Sisters Dawn (Donnie) Sorensen, New Denmark, and Bev (Don) Manley Wells, Maine, USA. Predeceased by his only brother Philip (Ursula) Dixon, 3 sisters: Wanda (Leonard) Christensen, Jean (Stan) Paynter, and Faye (Bob) Race, Citrus Heights, California. Doug married Norma Wintonick (Latham) Apr. 5, l969; Norma was the "love of his life". Step-father to Peter Wintonick (Christine Burt) and Suzanne (Barry) Olsheskie. Loving grandpa to Jason (Karen), James (Shannon), Erin, Matthew Olsheskie and Mira Burt-Wintonick. Doug was mentor/helper to 23 nieces and nephews in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Canada, and Maine, California in the U.S.A. A well-traveled, workable life of interests, proud owner of the "Pacific Star" Award of Merit (HMCS Uganda) ... this cruiser was the pride of the RCN, being the largest and most powerful ship in the World War II fleet, and the first to circumnavigate the globe, seeing action in the Pacific. Doug spent 58 years as plumber/pipe fitter: member of Local 71, and was proud to be their President for 12 years. An ardent accomplished downhill skier (Austria, Innisbrook, St. Anton, etc.), he won the bronze Molstar Medal at Mont-Ste-Marie at age 48. Fishing, hunting, sailoring were passions with Doug. His oral history project, interviewing many older plumbers, was accepted by then Mayor Jim Watson, at a ceremony at Ottawa's City Hall. These tapes are now at the Ottawa Archives. Many of his naval and family treasures are at the New Denmark Memorial Museum in New Brunswick. Even getting his hole-in-one at Madawaska Golf was an achievement for him. His own personal memoirs, recently hand-written in 2007 (just published in book form on January 28th, 2008) show remarkable sense of duty, an adventurous life, well-lived with astounding recall. In overcoming earlier cancer, Doug's later life brought him a multiple series of ailments; nonetheless he continued to live his own A-B-Cs of life: acceptance, bravery and candor. Being blessed with a loving family, helping neighbours and caring members of St. Andrew's United Church, Fitzroy Harbour brought him such joy. We, who are left, are thankful to have had Doug enrich our own lives in so many directions. So many thanks to the caring staff of the Palliative Care Unit at the Arnprior Hospital, Dr. Michelle McBride, Dr. Paul Enright and all the other numerous affiliated medical professionals who have been angels to this angel. MELNYK, Willa Margaret May 22, 1920 - February 2, 2008 Willa Margaret Melnyk, beloved wife of Orest Melnyk of Calgary, passed away on Saturday, February 2, 2008 at the age of 87 years. Willa Margaret Turner was born in Halifax, NS. She met her husband Orest, when he was stationed in Halifax during World War II. He proposed before he left for overseas, and on his return, they were married in Halifax. They moved to Cadomin where David and Mona were born, but settled in Edmonton. Willa was president of the I.O.D.E. for numerous years and is remembered for her beauty, her wardrobe, her spectacular hats and her mink stole. Willa and Orrie enjoyed travelling and spent many winters in the Ilikea Hotel in Hawaii. Las Vegas was another favourite trip. In 1993, Orrie and Willa moved to Victoria where they spent twelve wonderful years. In 2005, as Willa's health was failing, they moved to Calgary to be closer to Mona and Gordon. They settled at McKenzie Retirement Home where Willa lost her battle with pulmonary fibrosis on February 2. Besides her loving husband Orest, Willa is survived by her son David and her daughter Mona Tansowny. Her son-in-law Gordon Guenette and her daughter-in-law Laurel became two of her favourite people. Her grandchildren Todd and Kari were the delight of her life. Attending their ballet lessons, soccer, basketball and volleyball games were an important part of her life. Seeing Todd marry Randi and having three of her great-grandchildren made her very proud. Watching Kari grow into an amazing, strong woman was one of her greatest sources of pride. Her four step-grandchildren, Dan, Chris, Ann, and Kate added more enjoyment to her life. It could have been soccer games, Christmas concerts or Kate's music concerts, but they were all enjoyed. With Dan marrying Asanna, two more great-grandchildren were added, Bralen and Rhea. A Celebration of Willa's Life will be held on Wednesday, February 6, 2008 from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the "Recreational Room" at 30 Cranfield Link S.E. in Calgary. GELDART, ODESSA PHYLLIS - Surrounded by her family, Odessa Geldart, wife of the late John Geldart, passed away peacefully at her residence in Rothesay, on February 2, 2008. She was born on October 20, 1924 in Coles Island, NB and was a daughter of the late Guy and Gertrude (Crandale) Prosser. Odessa primarily was a loving wife, mother and nanny but found the time to work as a Nurse's Aid for the Canadian Red Cross. She was an active member of Forest Hills Baptist Church and the Women's Missionary Society. Odessa loved the church almost as much as her family. She was well known for her beautiful quilts, and her crocheting and knitting ability. She is survived by her daughter, Brenda Moore (Weldon) of Burton, NB; two sons, Norval Yorston and Gordon Geldart (Jean) both of Rothesay, NB; eight grandchildren, Jaska, Elizabeth, Timothy, Nancy, Cindy, David, Joseph and Tina; 11 great grandchildren, including her new name's sake, Baby Odessa Elizabeth; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. FITZGERALD, MICHAEL DONALD RICHARD (MIKE FITZ!) (June 10, 1991 - February 2, 2008) - With his family by his side, and at home where he wanted to be, Mikey said goodbye to us and to the illness that had weakened him. He fought with determination and faced his challenge with courage and dignity, never once complaining. Mike was a Grade 11 student at Leo Hayes High School where he was welcomed with open arms, but he leaves behind exceptional friends from every school in the province and beyond. With the exception of friends and family, Mike's greatest love was basketball. In his too-short career Mike Fitz helped bring home five provincial championships, an NBA 3-on-3 championship, and represented New Brunswick at the Under 15 Club Nationals in 2006 and on the provincial Under 16 team in 2007. Mike "Little Fitzy" was an avid golfer and worked (and we use the term loosely as it was too much fun to be classed as work) in the back shop at the Fredericton Golf Club where he was much loved by all of the Club's members. Saddened by the loss of Michael's love and laughter are his parents, Don and Colleen (Graham); his brothers and confidantes, John and Patrick; and his one-and-only sister, Karen. He will also be missed by his Godparents, Paul and Fabia Fitzgerald; his grandfather, Richard Fitzgerald; his grandmother, Sadie Graham, many aunts, uncles, cousins and the most awesome friends one could imagine. Mike is now sharing his laughter with his infant brother, Richard; his grandmother, Minnie (Digdon) Fitzgerald; his grandfather, John Graham; his uncle, Tommy Graham; and his aunt, Karen Graham. MONTANARO, Giuseppina (Josephine)(nee Foglia) 2008-02-04 Giuseppina (Josephine) Montanaro (nee Foglia) passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 2, 2008 at the TBRHSC, at the age of 77. Giuseppina was born in Visciano, Naples, Italy on March 19, 1930 and moved to Thunder Bay in 1956 with her husband Salvatore and her first two children, Aniello (Neil) and Emilio. One of her happiest moments in life was celebrating her 50th wedding anniversary on October 27th, 2000 with a big party at the Da Vinci Centre. Giuseppina found great joy in being a wife, mother and Nonna. Her husband, children and grandchildren were the love of her life and her greatest pride and joy. Nonna always made sure we were well-fed, from homemade bread & "pizza frite" on Saturdays to her pasta dinner on Sundays (with eggplant parmigiana and braciole in between!) She opened her arms to all who entered her home and no one ever left hungry! Giuseppina is survived by her family: husband of 57 years, Salvatore, son Aniello (Antonietta) and their children, Josie, Joanna, and Sam, son Emilio (Kim) and their sons Michael and Philip, daughter Anna (Steve) Marchese and their children Maria, Carlina and Davide, daughter Lucy (Eric) Stephens of Kelowna, BC, brother Gregorio Foglia, sister Mariangela (Frank) Montella of Italy, sister Brigida (Giacomo) DeSena , sister Antoniette (Felice) Miele, and cousin Carmella Serino. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews both in Canada and Italy and also by numerous brothers- and- sisters in-law on her husband’s side of the family. She is predeceased by her parents Pasquale and Rubina (Bernardo) Foglia, brother Antonio in youth, sister Merita, brothers Angelo, Carmine and Victorio, and most recently by her special sister-in-law Teresa (Iannicelli) Foglia. Nonna was strong, a real fighter and never gave up, even when she was faced with difficult life challenges. Nonna we love you, we miss you and we know you’re cooking for everyone up in Heaven. MAHAR, CHERYL 'LYNN' - The death of Lynn Mahar occurred unexpectedly on February 2, 2008 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born at Black's Harbour, NB she was the daughter of the late Lindell and Mae (Stevens) Mahar. She had been employed with Red Rose Tea and Regis Inventory Services and was currently employed with Empire Theatres. She volunteered at Forest Hill School, enjoyed playing cards and being with her family. Spending time at 'the Lake' held a special place in her heart. Surviving is her sister, Hyla Scott (Michelle); brothers, Wayne (Debbie), Stephen (Twila), Donald (Lois), all of Saint John; her nieces and nephews, Terra, Bonnie, Angie, Teegan, Christopher and Jamie; great-nieces, Becky, Katie 'Peanut', Jocelyn; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her special great-aunt and great-uncle, Merle and Joe Chambers; and aunt Audrey Thorne. At her request there will be no visitation or funeral service. GRANT, ELSIE (1904-2008) - With her family by her side, Elsie Grant of Kilburn passed away peacefully at Victoria Glen Manor on February 3, 2008. Born in Dundee, NB on January 9, 1904, she was the daughter of Fred and Emma (Smith) Gaudin. Elsie leaves behind her daughters, Marion Weaver of Florida, Elizabeth McHugh of Long Island, NY, Audrey Walsh of Campbellton, Dorothy (Leo) DeMerchant of Ottawa, Joan Good of Fredericton, Linda (Dennis) Finnamore of Hartland; her sons, Fred (Lois) Grant of Fort Fairfield, ME, Keith (Carole) Grant of Fredericton, Gary (Margaret) Grant of Kilburn; 28 grandchildren; 53 great grandchildren; 28 great great grandchildren; and one great great great grandson. Elsie was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Leigh Grant; and her infant son, Robert Grant. Elsie moved to the area in 1923 to be a teacher at the Bon Accord School. She and her husband Leigh married in September of 1924, after which they started their family. Resting at Brunswick Funeral Home with visitation on Tuesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. DROST, ZULA G. Zula G. Drost of Parker Road, Carleton County passed away February 2, 2008 at Carleton Manor. Zula was born at Hartfield in 1913, a daughter of the late Gertrude (Bragdon) Tompkins and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was a housewife and also worked with her husband, Roy on the family farm, even continuing to operate it herself following his death. Zula loved to garden and enjoyed traveling either on bus tours or with her family. She was a life member of the Northampton W.I. and a member of the Forever Young Club in Woodstock. She is survived by her children, Meredith Drost (Pat), Leigh Drost (Doris), both of Northampton, Mavis Spires (Gordon) and Grace Pryor (David), both of Newbridge; her grandchildren, Brian Drost, Sandra Watters (Wayne), Judy Drost (Dale), Carrie Spires (Dickie), Scott Spires (Sandra) and Lori Nye (Clinton); her great grandchildren, Michelle, Michael, Brandon, Jacob, Emma, Marissa, Kaylee and Caleb; several nieces and nephews. In addition to her mother, Zula was predeceased by her husband, Roy Drost in 1984; a sister, Geraldine Lenentine; and two brothers, Murray and Vernon Tompkins. PYNE, Hazel (Golden) - Of Espanola, born Cockburn Island on April 10th, 1921- February 1st, 2008 passed away at the Espanola Nursing Home at the age of 86. Beloved wife of the late Dewey Golden and the late Delbert Pyne. Leaving behind a good friend Fred Bright and his family. Loving daughter of the late Charles and Loletta (nee Mitchell) Catling. Raised by her aunt and uncle the late Jack & Eleanor (Nellie) Ballentyne whom she considered her parents. Loving mother of Wayne Golden (wife Kathy) of Lee Valley Road, Sandra (husband Dan Courtemenche) of Espanola, Dennis Golden (wife Marilyn) of McKerrow and the late Charles, Dwight, Carolyn and Gary Golden (wife Sandra) of Sault Ste. Marie. Dear stepmother to Charles Pyne (Candy), James Pyne (wife Patti), Sharon (Dan) and Beverly Pyne all of the Sault area. Dear mother in law of Jackie Golden of Sault Ste. Marie and also leaving behind good friend Sylvia (Sibi) of Sault Ste. Marie. She will be sadly missed by 23 grandchildren and 29 great- grandchildren. Dear sister of the late Lawrence, Clarence, Victor, Tom, Alan, Wilmur Catling, Velma Leclair, Verna Rickman, Vera Catling and Marie Catling. Hazel was a Life Member of the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary to Branch 39, Espanola and a member of the Moose Lodge in Sault Ste. Marie. Resting at the BOURCIER FUNERAL HOME, Espanola on Monday, February 4th from 10:00 a.m. to the time of the Funeral Service in the funeral home at 3:30 p.m. with the Reverend Paul Walmsley officiating. LEWIS, William John (Jack) - In loving memory of Jack Lewis, 65 years, who passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 2, 2008. Beloved husband of Myrna (Clarke). Loving father of Wendy Beauparlant (Bruce) and Michael Lewis (Nathalie). Dear grandfather of Justin, Adrien and Hunter. Dear brother of Carol Hall (Carl) and Lyle Lewis (Paulette). Son of Bill and Margaret Lewis predeceased. He will be missed by many nieces and nephews. Born and raised on Manitoulin Island, Jack moved to Sudbury in 1965 to work for The Sudbury Board of Education, where he was a teacher until he retired in 1997. He enjoyed many wonderful times with his family on Manitoulin Island. He loved fishing and he was the happiest on the lake in his boat. He spent many years with The Sudbury and District Pipe Band with whom he went to Scotland in 1984. He took great pride in his children and their accomplishments, and he loved his grandsons dearly. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Huntington's Society of Canada would be appreciated. Funeral Service in the R.J.
