WHEAT, Sidney Edward - Peacefully on Friday February 1st, 2008 at Hospice Niagara at the age of 81. Beloved husband of the late Kathleen. Devoted father of David and his wife Pamela. Caring grandfather of Zachary, Mischa and Sarah and step-grandfather of Mia and Teresa. Brother of Herbert Martin Wheat and his wife Gerry. Latterly friend of Jo Blackburn. ROY, Melissa 2008-02-04 Mrs. Melissa Lorraine Roy (nee Goodman), age 78 years, passed away peacefully on the morning of Saturday, February 2, 2008 at Thunder Bay Interim Long Term Care Center. Melissa was born on November 11, 1929 to Herbert and Jeanette Goodman. She married Robert Roy on Christmas day in 1950 and was a loving wife for 26 years before his passing. For most of their marriage they lived in Port Arthur, and together raised their four sons. In her younger years Melissa was an avid gardener. She took great pride in her many gardens and her beautifully landscaped yard. She enjoyed reading and spending time with her sons and grandchildren. Melissa will be remembered for her untiring love, kindness and generosity towards her family. Melissa is survived by her sons Rob (Kathy), Audie and Ronnie (Diane); daughter-in-law Barbara; grandchildren Greg, Lily, Frank, Ryan, Ryley, Renee, Rhiannon, Erik, Emma, Shawn, Cassie, Keith, and Riki; great-grandchildren Grace, Nadia, Kaden and McKinley. She is also survived by her sisters Nora, Beatty, Dorothy, Shirley (Cliff) and Lovey (Louis); brothers Frank (Dorothy), Glen (Jeanette), and Herb (Donna) and their families. Melissa was predeceased by her husband Robert in 1976; son Roch in 2003; granddaughter Fallon; daughter-in-law Mary-Ann and brother Jack. Wilfred J. Lutes 1929-2008 Wilfred John Lutes passed away suddenly, but peacefully at The Moncton Hospital on Saturday, February 2, 2008 at the age of 78. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Patricia Mae; his son, Derek (Heather); daughter, Deborah (Ronald) Chirka; three loving grandchildren, Samantha, Daniel and Madison; sisters, Joyce Allison, Beth Ferguson; and sister-in-law, Joyce Lutes; many cousins, nieces and nephews; and several great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Barbara "Jesse"; as well as his brother, Rupert. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends, especially because he was known for his wit, his great sense of humor and his gift of gab. At his request no visitation or service will be held. Marie Babineau 1931-2008 Marie Babineau, 76, of Moncton, NB, passed away on Saturday, February 2nd, 2008 at the Dr. Georges-L. Dumont Hospital. Born in Sunny Brae, NB, she was the daughter of the late John and the late Amanda (née: DesRoches) Melanson. Mrs. Babineau, prior to retirement worked as a secretary, she enjoyed bowling and spent many hours volunteering for the Blood Donor Clinics and Meal-on-Wheels programs. She was a member of both Club d'Age d'Or-Christ Roman Catholic Church. She is survived by her husband, Hector; one sister, Stella (George) Vanbuskirk of Moncton; as well as several nieces and nephews. Beloved wife of the late Gawithra (1999) of the Younger Bear Clan of the Cayuga Nation, also known as Alex Jamieson Sr. Very loving mother of Alex Jr. (Brenda), Cynthia, Sandra ( Bryan), Harold (Amelia), Mary, Jacob (Danielle), Julia and predeceased by her son Jesse. May was an extremely devoted grandmother to Clifford (Nadine), Adam, Joslyn, Adrian, Sherri, Dimitri, Jesse, Ian, Ryan, Jessica, Alexandria, Mallory and Leah. Great- grandmother to Jakob and Jesse. Dear sister of Ruth Codero and Robert Brown. Survived by many nieces and nephews. Totah was a member of the Brain Injury Association and a foster parent who cared for scores of children for over 30 years. She worked for many years with the families at the Six Nations Child and Family Services and at the Youth Lodge. In the past she assisted with the formation of the Pine Tree Native Centre of Buffalo. After her grandchildren, her deepest passions were her dogs. Active until her last few days, she was a “parenting“ columnist and assisted greatly in the formation of the Six Nations community newspaper, the Grand River Runner. May had a big heart, especially for children in need of care and she helped countless people when they were in need. At the end of her time here on Earth, her heart had given so much she could not give anymore and the Creator called her to be with him. “Totah“ will be deeply missed by all her family and friends. MAY, Vernon Gerald - Went to be the Lord on Saturday February 2nd, 2008 at the Belleville General Hospital. Vernon May, of Belleville, in his 95th year. Son of the late Charles and Viola (nee Benway). Predeceased by his beloved wife Pearl Jean May. Survived by his brother Ivan May of Belleville, and by his sister-in-law Agatha May of the Fairmount Home in Kingston. Predeceased by his sisters Irma Jones, Irene Dyck, Vivian Ethier, and by brothers Bernard, Orville, Leonard and Infant Ronnie May. Vernon will be sadly missed by his friends and by his many nieces, nephews and their families; Larry May, Donna Gerow, Ken Dyck, Richard Jones, Jack Dyck, Wes May, Jackie Ethier, Gary May, Cathy Brown, Barbara Kizer, Lois Bellas, Dorothy May, Marilyn May, Luana Culmer, William May, and a very dear friend of the family, Peggy Potts. Vernon served with the R.C.A.F. during WWII, between 1940 and 1945. For many years he had his own watch repair business, on the west coast of Canada and was a certified member of the Canadian Jeweler's Institute (Watchmakers Division), returning to Belleville following retirement, to reunite with his family. HIGGINS, William Chester, Captain (Ret.) - Two days following a 90th birthday celebration with friends and family by hoisting a glass of his favourite dark rum, Chet passed away at the Greater Niagara General Hospital in Niagara Falls. Born January 30, 1918 in Westville NS, he was the last surviving child of the late Simon and Agnes (Campbell) Higgins. He was predeceased by his siblings Kathleen Blackwood, Harold, Lorraine O'Brien, Donald, Geraldine and two sisters Margarita and Stella in infancy. He proudly served his country, first in the militia as a boy soldier, and then in active duty in the army. He served from Cape Breton NS to Prince Rupert BC, and many points between. One of his great regrets was not having served overseas during the war but being called to train soldiers in Canada prior to their deployment. He fully believed that if you were to do a job, you did it to the very best of your ability. After retiring from the army he owned and operated a service station (next to the Heather Motel) in Stellarton NS, before moving to Niagara Falls. There he worked in a number of fields before retirement. He was a great believer in judging a person by their character and not by their profession or status in life and therefore had a wide and varied circle of friends. He played golf, curling and bridge with a passion , supported his Legion in many capacities, loved to learn new things and meet new people. He loved a song, a story, a joke, a laugh, sharing a drink and a hug. Joining him on his travels was his great love, his wife of nearly sixty years, Phyllis (McWilliam). Together they raised six children; Lynn, Michael, David, Tom, Susan and Dan. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. At his request there will be no visitation or service. He would want you to, as you remember him, share a story, raise a drink, and tell those you care for that you love them. BARNETT, Arthur George Sadly passed away, 31st January 2008, at Carlingview Manor, after a difficult illness. Beloved husband of the late Christina Barnett, he is survived by his sons Edward Gregory (Inese) Barnett and Robin Bruce (Dianne) Barnett, his grandchildren Erinne Barnett and Steven (Kellie) Barnett, and his great-granddaughter Ruby Barnett. Born May 3, 1921, "Artie" was a hard working and caring father with a strong commitment to providing community service. He was an outstanding amateur hockey coach in Winnipeg MB in the 1940s and served as an alderman for the Town of Dollard des Ormeaux PQ in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He was an employee of Air Canada (formerly TCA) for 37 years and was one of the first company recipients of the prestigious "Award of Merit" in 1974 for dedicated service to the airline and in the community. He will be sorely missed by his loving family and friends. Friends may pay respects at a Service in Memory of Arthur, Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Capital Memorial Gardens. BENNETT, William “Bill“ - In loving memory of William “Bill“ Bennett, 75 years, who passed away Friday, February 1st, 2008 at the Mindemoya Hospital, Manitoulin Island. Beloved husband to his wife and angel of 52 years, Agnes (Lavigne) Bennett of Tehkummah, On. Loving father of Blair (wife Debra)(Mills) Bennett of Espanola, Walter (wife Mary-Lee)(Martel) Bennett of Lively, Ann Marie Fletcher (husband Keith) of Toronto, Laura Leblanc (husband Andre) of Whitefish, and Billy (wife Tammy)(Lanktree) Bennett of Naughton. Cherished grandfather of Jennifer, Lindsay, Andrea, Adam, Andre, Jake, Joey, Samantha and Jennifer and great granddaughter Talia. Dear brother of Leonard, Fred, Clifford, Marcella, Marg, and Blanche of Bathurst and Annie of Montreal. Dear son of Leonard and Laura (née Ward) Bennett both predeceased. Sadly missed by many nieces and nephews. Bill married Agnes in Bathurst, New Brunswick in 1955, thereafter moving to Whitefish where they settled and raised their family. Agnes and Bill then later retired in 1989 in Tehkummah enjoying the beauties of Manitoulin Island. Bill worked for INCO as a raise driller in the Crushing Plant at Copper Cliff, transferring to Crean Hill in 1964, retiring after 30 years in 1985. His family and friends will forever miss Bill. He leaves behind a legacy of memories of many fishing and hunting trips with his sons and friends. He will also be remembered for the incredible ways in which he was hard working. He was talented, smart and has passed these values of a strong work ethic onto his children. His love of the outdoors also is extended to his children. His battle with cancer ended on February 1st, 2008. He will be sadly missed and not forgotten by all who knew him. BURNS, MURDOCK WALTER Murdock Walter Burns, 89, a World War II Veteran, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 1, 2008, at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital. Born in Marysville on May 31, 1918, son of the late Walter and Ida Mae (Sturgeon) Burns. In addition to his wife, the late Kathleen Stella (Bennett) Burns (September 2002), he was predeceased by his brother, Lindsay; and sister, Dorothy (Douglas) Bailey. Murdock is the last surviving member of his immediate family. He will be sadly missed by his son, Terence (Dianne) Burns of Fredericton; and his daughter, Rosemary (Len) Nason of Lincoln; grandchildren, Sherry (Chester) Eatmon, Laura (Mike) Peasey, Derrick (Franca) Nason; great-grandchildren, Chester, Amethyst, Johanna and Jacob Eatmon, Katharine and Lauren Peasey; brother-in-law, Douglas Bailey; and cousin, Eileen Hale of Fredericton; sister-in-law, Chloris Stewart of Lakeland Florida; brother & sister-in law, David and Lorna Cuffley; sisters-in-law, Astrea Matthews, Thelma Slingo and Freda Jellett, all of England; and many nieces and nephews in England. His early years in Devon were spent working at Neills farm and South Devon Fuel Company delivering wood and coal until he was 22. In 1940, he enlisted in the Canadian Army and was deployed to England where he remained until wars end. There he met and married Kathleen Bennett. Upon his return to Fredericton, he joined the Fredericton Fire Department where he spent the remainder of his working career, retiring in 1980. Many years were spent volunteering his time transporting handicapped children to and from school and delivering medications for Savages Drug Store. A quiet man, avid reader, story teller and sports enthusiast. He loved to reminisce about his growing up years in Devon, city landmarks and history of Fredericton. Extremely well read, he loved to talk about Canadian and American politics, and British history. He loved watching sports on TV, especially baseball, hockey, golf, tennis and football. You could ask him anything about these sports and he could tell you everything you needed to know about the players and how the game was played. A very kind and generous man who always was ready to offer a helping hand without any expectation of notice. He truly enjoyed the precious time he spent with his family and his inspiration will have an everlasting effect on all who knew and loved him. Visitation will be held at Bishop's Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 5, 2008, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 with the funeral service to be held on Wednesday, February 6, 2008, at 1:00 pm at Bishop's Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Father Gerry White and Pastor Steven Matthews. Interment will take place at a later date at the Forest Hill Cemetery. Active pallbearers are, Michael Peasey, Derrick Nason, Alvin Nason, Chester Eatmon, Donnie Clark and Bill Brewer. Honourary Pallbearers are James O'Neill, Herbie Hawkins and Lawrence Burden. BLAIR (AOCA), Robert (Bob) George 1944 - 2008 On Saturday, February 2nd, 2008, Bob passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side, after a courageous four-year battle with colorectal cancer, in his 63rd year. He was born in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan on March 13th, 1944, to parents W.R.N. (Buck) and Audrey (nee Cooke) Blair. Bob is survived by his wife Virginia (Ginny) (nee Roberts) and his daughter Kathryn (Miriam and grandson Kameron) of Ottawa, brothers Richard (Carolyn) of Winnipeg and John (Patricia) of Calgary, and nieces and nephews Karen, Robert, Jade (Louis) and Caitlin. He will be missed by close friend and business associate Wendy Grant. Bob was a graduate of Graphic Design from the Ontario College of Art. After a brief time in Ottawa at Campeau Corporation he and Ginny moved to Cornwall in 1970 where he became a Teaching Master and then Chair of Graphic Design at St. Lawrence College for 25 years. In 1994 he, Ginny and Wendy purchased Cornwall City Press. His passions included antique automobiles, painting, fishing and spending time at the home he and Ginny built in Martintown with his family, pets and friends. In keeping with Bob's wishes a funeral will not be held, but rather friends and family can meet for a celebration of his life at Cornwall City Press, 700 Campbell Street, Cornwall on Saturday, February 9, 2008 between 1:00 and 4:00 in the afternoon.
