Banville, Jeanne D'Arc -- À Drummondville, le mercredi 16 janvier 2008 est décédée à l'âge de 87 ans Mme Jeanne D'Arc Banville Hamel, épouse de feu André Hamel demeurant à Drummondville. La crémation a eu lieu au crématorium Yves Houle. La direction des funérailles et la crémation ont été confiées au Centre Funéraire Yves Houle, 130, rue Lindsay, Drummondville. Les funérailles ont eu lieu le samedi 19 janvier à 14 h 30 en l'église Sainte-Thérèse, inhumation au cimetière Saint-Frédéric. La famille était présente à l'église, samedi jour des funérailles, pour rencontrer parents et ami(e)s et recevoir les marques de sympathie. COUPLAND, Rex Thursfield 1920 - 2008 Rex Thursfield Coupland passed away on Tuesday, January 22, 2008. He will be greatly missed by his wife Gwen and family - David and Gloria with Michael and Laura, Kimberley and Mason and Triston and Steven in Calgary, Michael and Joan with Marc and Kristin and Mattaya and Leigh and Katherine in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and Nelson and Cheryl with Jonathon in Foam Lake, Saskatchewan. Rex is also survived by numerous nephews, nieces, and friends from across Canada and overseas. Rex was born July 21, 1920 in Winnipeg and attended school there. He was the youngest King Scout in Canada in 1932 and became a Scout Master in 1961. In 1937 he boarded a cattle train in Winnipeg and then a cattle boat from St. Johns, New Brunswick for England, where he worked until January of 1940. At this time, Rex joined the R.A.F., worked on Douglas Bader's 242 Squadron on ground crew in 1942 and the following year remustered to aircrew and was a Spitfire pilot until his discharge in Canada in January 1946. Rex married Gwen in Lincoln, England, in March of 1944 and saw his twin sons, David and Michael born February 1, for the first time at the age of eight months old in October of 1945 after his service in Burma. Upon Rex's return to Canada, Gwen brought the twins to Canada from England on the Queen Mary in August of 1946. Subsequently, the twins were eighteen months old before Rex saw them again at this time. Located back in Winnipeg with his growing family, Rex and Gwen's final arrival was their son, Nelson, born in 1950 on October 2. Rex joined his grandfather's firm, The Winnipeg Silver Plate Co. Ltd. and eventually became the owner. He sold the company in 1977 and moved to Calgary, where his volunteerism reached out into many areas, starting with UNICEF in 1962. He also worked for the Diabetes Association, Foothills Academy and Confederation Park Senior Citizens Centre, where he was on the board and headed up the committee raising money for the badly needed addition to the building in 1984, and also extended parking area in 1989. He has worked tirelessly since in this popular centre. He was awarded the 125 year Anniversary medal for his volunteerism in 1993. Rex will be very sorely missed by his family and by those whom he touched throughout his fantastic and loving life of 87 years. A Memorial Service for Rex will be held at St. Barnabas Anglican Church (1407 - 7 Avenue N.W.) on Sunday, January 27, 2008 at 12:00 noon. JOCHELSON, J. Leon October 12, 1934 - January 23, 2008 Leon passed away peacefully in the arms of his loving family on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at the age of 73 years. Leon was a dedicated and loving husband, father, brother-in-law, uncle and friend. He was predeceased by his sister, Freda, father, Raphael and mother, Leah. Leon is survived by his wife of fifty years, Judy; and his sons Alan (Alexandra, Davita and Thea), Philip (Reese, Leora and Nate) and Richard (Anna and Leah Claire). Leon was much loved by Judy's family, the Zybutz Family; Len, Deb, Mark (Diana), Megan (Ron), Dan, Niall, Tyrone, Cian, Minnie Blume and family; Issy Zybutz and family; as well as many close friends. Leon epitomized love. He was kind, gentle and always willing to help those in need. He was a wonderful teacher and lived a life of honesty and integrity - a great example to us all. We will miss him terribly. The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff of the Rockyview General Hospital and, in particular, Dr. Dargie, for their exceptional skill, support and compassion. PETERSON, Christopher William August 31, 1993 - January 23, 2008 Christopher Peterson of Calgary passed away suddenly on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at the age of 14 years. Christopher was born in Edmonton. He loved acting and was a talented piano player, achieving many Royal Conservatory and Kiwanis Festival honours. Christopher had many friends and cared for everyone. He was well thought of in the community. Christopher was passionate about computers, video games, movies and loved comedy. He was a kind, loving, thoughtful, sensitive person who loved to make people laugh. VAN ROOSMALEN, Elisabeth Auguste April 23, 1936 - January 20, 2008 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother Elly on Sunday, January 20, 2008, at the age of 71 years. She will be welcomed with open arms by her late son Pete, who passed away in 1992, and her late husband Peter, who passed away in 1998. She will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by her daughters Miriam and Jeanette, her sons-in-law Richard and Morad, and her grandchildren Mitchell, Lindsey, Erik, Troy, Cameron and Stevan. She will also be missed by her family in British Columbia and the Netherlands. Wherever Elly lived, she became a part of her community, and always had many wonderful friends. Through her way of caring for others, Elly touched the lives of all who knew her. Her door was always open. Elly had a full life, although we wish we could have had more years with her. COX, Leslie 2008-01-25 It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Leslie (Les) A. S. Cox in his 87th year, on Monday, January 21, 2008 at the London University Hospital. Beloved husband of Elyse for 40 years. Loving grandfather of Darren (Edmonton), Allison (Vancouver), Jason (Thunder Bay) and daughter-in-law Lena (Thunder Bay). Predeceased by his first wife Eleanor (1966), son Stephen (2007) and brother William. Les was a Veteran of WW11 as a flying officer in the RCAF (1940-1946) and served overseas. Les was Past President of the Lakehead Food Brokers Association, Past Vice President of the Port Arthur/Fort William Kiwanis Club, past member of Khartoum Temple - Winnipeg, self employed as a Food Broker of “Cox Food Brokers” (1946-1977) and retired to Winnipeg in 1977 and then to London, Ontario in 1992. At his request cremation has taken place. A family memorial service will be held at FOREST LAWN MEMORIAL CHAPEL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice. BABE, Lucy Elizabeth "Betty" 2008-01-25 nee: Chapple) Betty Babe passed away quietly at St. Joseph’s Hospice on January 24, 2008. She is survived by her son Bill and his wife Elizabeth of Thunder Bay, daughter Jennifer of Toronto, and granddaughter Gillian and her husband Stephan Dupuis of Perth, Australia, her caregiver Gemma Arriola, brother Frank Chapple and his wife Irene of Burlington, Betsy Bishop and her family of Burlington, and many Spence, Chapple, Bythell and Sprague nieces and nephews. Great grandmother of Annick Babe Dupuis. Betty was predeceased by her husband Murray Babe, sister-in-law Helen Babe Bythell of Toronto, and her brothers Allen Chapple of Victoria, John Chapple of Thunder Bay and sister Jocelyn Chapple Spence of Thunder Bay. Betty was born in Fort William in 1910 to Clement and Annie Chapple, of Chapple’s Department Stores, she lived a full life to her 97th year. She attended the University of Toronto in the 1930’s where she met Murray again. They married in 1936 and lived variously in Fort Frances and Geraldton, until Murray enlisted in the Lake Superior Regiment. Betty spent the war years in Fort William and they continued to live there after the war, with Murray practicing law with Morris, Babe, Pugsley, Black and Hatherly, before being appointed to the family court bench. Betty participated with Murray in the local Kiwanis Club, volunteered at McKellar Hospital, enjoyed their family and friends at Two Island Lake, was a keen bowler and player of golf and bridge into her early 90’s. The family expresses great thanks to Dr. Mymko and his staff, and to Gemma Arriola, who collectively enabled Betty to live at home until two weeks before her death. A funeral service for Betty will be held on Monday January 28, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Jenkens Funeral Home with Rev. Deborah Kraft officiating. Patry Pierre 1957 - 2008 Après un véritable combat contre la maladie, Pierre nous a quittés dans la paix et la sérénité après une vie remplie de courage et de détermination. During the war years she taught school. Dickie held memberships with the Federal, Provincial and Saint John Liberal Associations, the Peninsula Pearls, Maritime Fiddlers Association, Coles Avid Reader Club and attended All Saints Church, Clifton Royal, NB. She possessed a great passion for animals and birds. After receiving his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in geology from the University of British Columbia, John Jambor joined the Geological Survey of Canada in Ottawa in 1960, During this period, he received his Ph.D from Carleton University in 1966. In 1993, John returned to his roots in the Vancouver area, continuing his work in environmental mineralogy as Adjunct Professor at both the University of Waterloo and at the University of British Columbia, and as the principal of Leslie Research and Consulting. He has been the recipient of several national and international awards: including, from Mineralogical Association of Canada, the Hawley Award (1970), the Queen's Silver Jubilee Medal (1977), the Berry Medal (1991), and the Past Presidents' Medal (2002) awarded to scientists who have made significant contributions to the mineralogical sciences during their career. He has been an Honorary Life Member of MAC since 1982. He received the Barlow Medal from the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and recently was honored with a Life Membership. Dr. Jambor has published widely, making important contributions in the fields of mineralogy, petrology, crystallography, and mineral deposits. Dr. Jambor also contributed to the earth sciences through editorial duties, of which the most significant are Scientific Editor of The Canadian Mineralogist (1971-1975); Co-Editor, The Canadian Mineralogist (1975-1977); New Minerals Editor, American Mineralogist (1989-2007); Consulting Editor for Exploration and Mining Geology (1991-1999). Dr. Jambor has also been editor or co-editor of seven special issues, short courses and related books, as well as series editor for five Mineralogical Association of Canada short courses. In recognition, he has been awarded the L.G. Berry Medal (MAC), Honorary Life Membership (MAC), and the Julian Boldy Memorial Award (CIM Geological Society). Dr. Jambor's interests included environmental mineralogy when environmental mineralogy was not even named as a science. The Group of Seven wine club was an important part of Jol's life. He was most happy in your company. The triumphant and superbly memorable blind tastings were always a source of happy reminiscence. He kept something aside for the 200th anniversary of the Group of Seven get togethers and, though he would not expect it, we know there will be a glass or two raised in his memory. John started curling in 1963 as a "therapeutic" alternative to working on his PhD. John made life-long friends at CityView (Nepean, Ontario) and at Tunnel Town (Tsawwassen, BC) most of whom never knew what he did for a living, but grew to appreciate the quietly skilled competitor with a love for wine and a great appreciation for the game he loved. He curled at least 2 times a week until he could physically no longer do so and was glad that his illness was diagnosed after he had completed his commitments to his curling team. That was John. John was exceedingly generous professionally and your thanks to him helped make his last weeks peaceful and serene. He is survived by his son Jay and his wife Lynne; his sisters-in-law Margaret Heenan and nieces Aretha and Madeline, and Janet (John) Davies, nephews Danny and Mike on the McCarthy side particularly William (Dolores), and his far away daughters Allison and Leslie Jambor and granddaughter Shizen. We want to particularly thank Dr. Colleen Lee and the Delta Home Support group. John requested that there be no funeral. He will be interred at Ocean View Burial Park, 400 Imperial Street, Saturday January 26, 2008 at 12 noon, with his sister Alice McCarthy, and Mother and Father Joanna and John Jambor, followed by an open house afterwards from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. McKIBBIN, Margaret Anne October 27, 1937 - January 18, 2008 It is with deep sadness the family announces the passing of Margaret McKibbin on Friday, January 18, 2008. MILNER, Frank 1913 - 2008 Frank passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 23, 2008. He was predeceased by his wife of sixty-two years, Betty. PALOSKY, Ethel Sharon Sharon Palosky passed away at the Oilfields Hospital in Black Diamond, AB on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at the age of 62 years. She was born on May 17, 1945 in Lethbridge, AB, and took all of her schooling in High River. In 1963, Sharon took a Nursing Aide course and worked in the hospital at Picture Butte, AB for two years after graduation. On June 17, 1966, Sharon married Lawrence Palosky. They farmed in the Vulcan area until April 1976. She worked in several different businesses until 1984 when she went to work for Canadian Western Natural Gas Co., now Atco Gas until 2006. Thanks to Sharon's really good school friend Anna May, they were able to move on January 27, 2006 to an acreage west of High River, AB - something they always wanted to do. Sharon was predeceased by her grandparents, father, mother-in-law and father-in-law. She is survived by her husband Lawrence and mother Isbelle Hanley; sisters Jolayne (Don) Swanston and Kay (Neil) Silver; brother Dwayne (Gloria) Noble and stepmother Aura Noble, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. SMITH, Carolyn Elizabeth (nee Wilson) July 14, 1921 - January 23, 2008 Carolyn Elizabeth Smith (nee Wilson), born July 14, 1921, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at the age of 86 years. Carol was a registered nurse, Class of 1943; married Wally Smith, CA; later owned the Bookcellar in Hamilton, Ontario; served on the Board of Directors for Mohawk College and a trustee for the local school board. Here in Calgary, she helped establish and manage the Glenbow Museum Gift Shop before retiring to live an even fuller, remarkable life. She is survived by her daughters, Roberta, Kim, Karen; her son, Drew; grandchildren, Kate, Christine, Emma, Cameron, Nathan and numerous friends. STAMATIADIS, Frangoula Our dear sweet mother and grandmother sadly passed away on Thursday, January 17, 2008. She was born on July 20, 1927 on the island of Karpathos, Greece. Frangoula was an amazing woman with so much love to give. Her heart was made of gold, and those who knew her, loved and treasured her. VOLKMANN, Wilhelm "Bill" G. June 21, 1933 - January 16, 2008 Wilhelm "Bill" G. Volkmann passed away suddenly in Calgary at the age of 74 years. Born in Hamburg, Germany, he immigrated to Canada in 1956 with his wife Anneliese. During his fifty-two years as a Calgarian, he had a distinguished career in electrical and oil and gas construction. Bill and Anneliese travelled across the globe and shared in a love of nature and the outdoors. He was an accomplished musician, hunter and passionate fisherman. Bill was deeply saddened by the loss of his wife in 2006. He is survived by his daughter Susan and sons Roy and Kevin. Margaret Violet Fern Szynkorenko (née Johnson) died on January 8, 2008 at the Englehart and District Hospital. Mrs. Szynkorenko had been ill for two years. She was born February 28, 1932 in Coleman Township to Nathan and Ellen Johnson and married Porfirij (Joe) Szynkorenko August 3, 1957 in New Liskeard. She was predeceased by her husband Joe, her parents, brothers George, Harry, Tom, Jimmy, Nathan, Leslie and sisters Grace and Tillie. She is survived by sister Albertine Gray, daughter Erelene (Terry) Chenette, son Edward (Maggie) Szynkorenko, grandchildren Trina, Trent, Stefan, Chad, Chelsea, great-grandchildren Jonah, Joshua and McKenna. Mrs. Szynkorenko was a member of the Christ Church Anglican in Englehart where she has lived since 1995 and St. Simons Anglican Church in Temagami. She was a cook, waitress and homemaker and will always be remembered for her spontaneous sense of humour. The funeral was held at Christ Church Anglican in Englehart with Reverend Linda White officiating January 11, 2008 with cremation to follow. COURVILLE, Thomas Michael - peacefully surrounded by his family at Sick Children's Hospital on January 24th, 2008. Thomas Courville at the age of 5. Beloved son of Ed and Michelle Courville. Cherished by his big brother Benjamin. Sadly missed by his grandparents Sylvia and Wayne Nethery and Andrew and Michelle Courville. Thomas will be sadly missed by his aunts, uncles and cousins. Fondly remembered by Kelly Cooper, and all his friends and caregivers at Stewart Homes - Davidson House. Resting at COURTICE FUNERAL CHAPEL, 1587 Highway # 2, Courtice, ON L1E 2R7 (905-432-8484) with Mass of Christian Burial at St. Therese Roman Catholic Church on Monday January 28th, 2008 at 11:00 AM. The family of Thomas will receive friends on Sunday January 27th, at the Courtice Funeral Chapel from 1:00 to 3:00 PM.
