LaFORGE-TIEMAN, Lynn 1955 - 2007 Lynn LaForge-Tieman, a woman of boundless compassion, love, intelligence and wit, left us Sunday, October 21, 2007. With her passing, those of us who knew and loved her lost an important, bright light in our lives. Lynn faced this chapter of her life with the same courage, wisdom and good humour that she had all of life's challenges. Her dignity and ability to find comedy in every situation were cherished gifts to those who supported her through her illness. Born February 14, 1955 in Sudbury, ON, Lynn was working as a journalist in Bracebridge in the 1970s when she met Hans Tieman, an Alberta boy who was a match for her sharp intellect and spirit. Hans brought her to Calgary in 1976; they married in Millarville in 1977 and moved again, to Saudi Arabia, in 1985. They returned to Calgary in 1994. After completing high school in Sudbury, Lynn studied journalism at the Canadore College of Applied Arts and Technology and honed her skills working for the Bracebridge Gazette. In 1977 she took on the challenge of editing and writing for the Calgary Women's Newspaper. Under her leadership the paper was redesigned and its fresh approach to women's issues won many new readers and influenced a cohort of women who went on to achieve in all areas of Canadian society. Her questing intelligence led her back to studies at the University of Calgary where she completed a Bachelors of Arts Degree, Honours in History. Lynn wrote and produced annual reports for major energy companies in Canada and overseas, including Saudi Aramco, the largest energy exploration and production company in the world and TransCanada PipeLines. In 1999, Lynn established TSI Communications and as a consultant, Lynn assisted such companies as EnCana, Enbridge, PrimeWest Energy Trust, Canadian Hunter, Ensign Resource Service Group, Summit Resources, CE Franklin, Koch PipeLines LP, AltaGas and Alberta Treasury Branch. Over the years these reports have won numerous awards, including those issued by the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants and National Post, Financial Post, Oilweek and MERCOM ARC Awards (New York). In 1997, the Financial Post named the annual report Lynn wrote for TransCanada as one of the top ten "best reads" in North America. Lynn will be greatly missed by Hans, their daughter Alison Tieman (Jonathan Doyle), and son James, as well as her parents Art and Fran LaForge of London, ON, and brother Michael LaForge (Susan) of Waterloo-Kitchener. "Sisters" vacations will not be the same: she leaves Merina (Bill) Ireland of Guelph, ON, and Jane LaForge (Gerry Stemmler) of London, ON. She is also in the hearts of Hans' parents Harry and Alice Tieman of Calgary, and brothers Peter (Ellen) of Medicine Hat, Mike (Tessie) of Calgary, Mark (Alison) of Kelowna, Tim (Reina) of Pueblo, Mexico, and sister Anna (James) Darke of Victoria, BC. Lynn is predeceased by brother-in-law Paul Tieman. Her many nieces and nephews were a constant source of pride and joy. In particular, nephew Andrew Tieman was her pillar of strength and a constant support to Lynn and her family. Her other constant companion was her cat, Mr. Tiggs, who joined Lynn hours after her passing. A celebration of Lynn's journey will be held at the African Safari Lodge at the Calgary Zoo (enter at North Entrance off of Memorial Drive) today, October 26, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. acknowledging her love of animals and long-time desire to go on an African safari. Lynn had a gift with words that is part of her legacy, both as an award-winning writer and communications professional, and as a passionate advocate for the disabled. She worked tirelessly to increase understanding of autism and poured her soul into ensuring the disabled have the voice, respect and funding that is their right. In her honour, The Lynn LaForge-Tieman Autism Foundation is being established. ETHIER, Leona May 1945 - 2007 On Saturday, October 20, 2007, Leona Ethier passed away peacefully at the Strathmore Hospital at the age of 62 years. Leona was born and raised in Altona, Manitoba and later moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba where she met and married her beloved husband Robert on October 7, 1967. Shortly after that wonderful day, they moved to Calgary, Alberta in 1969 where they decided to start a family. Leona was a very proud mother of her two daughters Karla Louise Ethier and Kristina Suzanne Ethier. She was also a grandmother to three grandchildren Cody Ethier (eighteen), Stephanie Ethier (eleven), and little baby Ethan LaRocke, who is still on his way, but will know his grandmother through all of the memories that we share with him. Leona was the oldest of four children, Alan (Mary - predeceased), Victor (Ann), Ken (Cathy), and her memory lives on through many others. A special thanks to Dr. Piesas, Pastor Dawn Nelson, and all of the Palliative Care team and staff at the Strathmore Hospital. Also, a big heartwarming thank-you from all the family to Cathy Geisbrecht, who was like a sister to Leona, for all her support and uplifting spirit. LARSON, Susan Reid "Sue" 1913 - 2007 Sue passed away peacefully at the High River Hospital on October 20, 2007 at the age of 94 years. She was born in Edmonton, October 13, 1913. Sue was an avid gardener and bingo player, a member of Golden Star Rebekah Lodge and served on several committees. Sue loved her family and enjoyed many close friendships. She is remembered by her three loving daughters, Maureen Fraser, Pat and her husband Ken Wideman, all of Nanton, AB; and Joy and her husband Art Teppler of Calgary. She is also survived by two granddaughters Chris Bullis and Teresa Johnstone, both of Nanton, AB; three great-grandchildren and one sister-in-law, and several nieces and nephews. MALINOWSKI, Julie (Wladyslawa) 1920 - 2007 - Julie died peacefully after a brief illness, at St. Mary's General Hospital, Kitchener, on Saturday, October 20, 2007. She was 87. Devoted mother of Anna Gerrard of Kitchener, Jeannie and her husband Michael Ward of Victoria BC and Zofia and her husband Jack Gooding of Winnipeg MB. She will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, James Gerrard and his wife Cornelia of Mannheim, David J. Gerrard and his wife Vanessa of Ottawa, Jason Gerrard and his wife Yoan of Hamilton, Benjamin Dueck and Janice Medeiros of Winnipeg, Gregory Ward of Kitchener, Ian and Keith Ward of Victoria BC and seven great grandchildren. Julie was predeceased by her husband Rev. Felix Malinowski, who she was deeply devoted to and missed very much; brother John Buczynski and parents Zofia (Izykowska) and Michael Buczynski. Prior to moving to Kitchener, Julie was a 31 year resident of Sudbury. She had worked in nursing at Guelph General Hospital and St. Mary's General Hospital. She loved gardening and crocheting. ANDERSON, MARIE (1915-2007) - Of Plaster Rock passed away at the Tobique Valley Hospital on Sunday, October 21, 2007. Born in Stickney, NB on November 3, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Martha (Kinney) Robinson. She leaves behind her daughters, Heather McCarty of Arthurette, Marilyn Anderson of St. Stephen; her sons, Fred (Linda) Anderson of Spruce Grove, AB, Terry (Helen) Anderson of Carstairs, AB; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Marie was the last surviving member of her family. She worked as a secretary at Wright and Everett's in Plaster Rock for over 20 years. MADAME MARILYNE BENOIT est décédée subitement le vendredi 19 octobre 2007 suite à un accident de voiture à l'âge de 63 ans. Née à Montréal, elle était la fille du Dr. B.H. Cragg et Mary (Maguire), elle était l'épouse du Dr. Paul Benoit. Elle laisse dans le deuil ses enfants: Rebecca (Matthew Cragg), Jean-Marc (Renata Varo) et Daniel ainsi que sa soeur Gaile et ses nièces Melanie et Daphne Lessard. C'est à l'hôpital Royal Victoria de Montréal que Marilyn a commencé sa longue carrière professionnelle comme infirmière autorisée, en se donnant totalement pour le plus grand bien de ses malades. Tout en étant épouse et mère à temps complet, elle obtint un baccalauréat en théologie de l'Université St. Paul d'Ottawa et continua, sa vie durant, à oeuvrer activement comme volontaire au Projet 4000 pour les réfugies vietnamiens, la Maison Amethyst et comme fondatrice de "Ottawa Therapy Dogs”. Les visites que faisaient Marilyn et ses labradors Ruby et Jet en ont touché plusieurs. La famille recevra parents et amis en la chapelle centrale de Hulse, Playfair et McGarry, 315 rue McLeod le lundi 22 octobre de 14h à 16h et de 18h à 21h. Marilyn started a life-long career of helping and caring for others as a RN at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal where she met her future husband Paul. As well as her full-time commitment as wife and mother, she earned a B. Th. from St. Paul's University and continued as an active volunteer throughout her life, working with the Project 4000 for Vietnamese Refugees, Amethyst House, and as a founder of Ottawa Therapy Dogs. Visits from Marilyn and her Labradors, Ruby and Jet, touched many lives. Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair and McGarry, 315 McLeod Street on Monday, October 22 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. A memorial Service will be held in the Chapel on Tuesday, October 23 at 11:30 a.m. followed by a reception in the McGarry Family Reception Centre. BUYS, Sophia Wilhelmina nee Barbas October 17, 1923 - October 21, 2007 Sophia left us early Sunday morning in the care of the Queensway Carleton Hospital. Born of Dutch citizenship in Soerakarta District, Indonesia, surviving World War II, she married Tony Buys (Sr.) and both immigrated to Canada. They had two sons, Anthony and George, who spent many a happy summer at the cottage in Burnett, Quebec which Sophia loved. In addition to Anthony (Susan) and George (Patricia), Sophia leaves grandchildren Daniel, Stefanie, Emily and Alexander. Sophia also leaves her sister Jacoba and brother- in-law John Vogt and family. After Tony (Sr.) passed away in 1993, Sophia lived quietly enjoying her family and garden. McLEAN, Helen Arlene (Cameron) Peacefully at the Elisabeth Bruyere Palliative Care Centre in Ottawa on October 20th, 2007, in her 83rd year. Beloved wife of Paul Douglas McLean (deceased). Loving mother to Doug (Judith), Tim (Deb), Steve (Nadine Wielgopolski), Marg (Dave McCann). Happy grandma to David and Sheila, Drew, Alan and Robyn , Jean Philippe, Catherine, and Michele, Jennifer, Michael, Connor and Heather. Helen will be greatly missed by her sisters Verna Ball, Marjorie Hattie and Marilyn Morrison. Helen was the daughter of John Archibald and Jenny Cameron and was born in Sunny Brae, Nova Scotia. She was predeceased by Irene Seldon, Ralph and Louise. Helen taught for two years before serving three years in the War. She graduated from University of Ottawa in 1975 with an honours BA in English. Her marriage to Paul lasted 58 years until his death in 2005. Helen was a community-oriented mom involved with bible school, brownies and guides, Salvation Army, and her church. Her personal loves were genealogy, her book club and bridge. Her personal therapy project was the church library last month named the Helen McLean Library. A tremendous and warm thank you to the caregivers at both the Elisabeth Bruyere and OGH. PADDON, Doris Jean Passed away peacefully at the Ottawa Civic Hospital on Monday, October 22, 2007 in her 98th year. Predeceased by her parents Margaret and Edmond Paddon, by her sisters Irene and Olive (Tom), and by her brothers Oswald and Stuart. STONE, George Alfred RCN Veteran Born January 11, 1921 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. On Monday, October 22, 2007, George Alfred Stone passed away at the age of 86 years. Forever remembered and loved by Helen Genevieve Stone, his wife of 62 years. Loving father of George Ronald, Sharon Ann, Helen Elaine, Kevin Patrick, Brian Francis and Mary Elizabeth. Loving grandfather of Ron, Jason, Courtney, Caitlin, Victoria, Shannon, Brandon and Ian and great-grandfather of Sasha. In 1939 he began a distinguished 27-year career in the Royal Canadian Navy, beginning as an Ordinary Seaman Stoker and retiring as a Lieutenant in 1968. During his career he served on numerous vessels, including HMCS Saguenay, HMCS Restigouche, HMCS Haida, HMCS Qu'Appelle, HMCS Sackville, HMCS Cap de la Madeleine, HMCS Magnificent, HMCS La Hulloise and HMCS Bonaventure. He was a veteran of WWII and the Korean War. He was honoured with these medals for his service: the 1939-45 Star, the Atlantic Star, the France and Germany Clasp, the Africa Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the War Medal 1939-45, the Korea Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the Canadian Forces' Decoration and Clasp. After serving in the military, he became a comptroller for Cadillac Fairview and a tax auditor for the Province of Ontario and the Government of Canada. He has been living with his wife and family in Ottawa since 1964. OBITUARY IRVINE JOHN (BENNY) BENOY February 14, 1923 - October 20, 2007 Founder of Logifem Inc. Peacefully, after a short illness at the Charles LeMoyne hospital Benny went home to be with his Lord. He is survived by his loving wife Mary, daughter Linda, brother Kenneth (Rosemary). Writer, lay evangelist and Sunday School teacher, Benny served six years in the British Royal Navy and twenty years in the Royal Canadian Fleet Air Arm. In 1987 he founded Logifem, a woman's shelter in Montreal. Dearly loved by all who knew him, Benny is mourned by his family, friends, board of directors, staff and residents of Logifem. CLARKE, Olive Kathleen. September 2, 1926 - October 18, 2007. It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Mrs. Olive Clarke at the age of eighty-one years. Olive has gone to be with her loving husband who passed away in August and she will be sorely missed and lovingly rememberd by her sons Ronald (Cathy Hill), James (Theresa) and William (Jalikatu) Clarke, three grandchildren Olive, Joseph and James.
