Survived by his son Wayne (Sharon Anto), brothers George (late Joan Hayward) and Edward (Ruth Melrose), sister-in-law Beatrice Assaf, many nieces and nephews, and countless friends and golfing buddies. SMITH, David Ernest. Passed away peacefully at the Jewish General Hospital on August 27, 2007 at the age of sixty-five years. He was the beloved husband of Kathleen Grace and the caring father to Cheryl Ann married to Clarence Prejean from Louisiana. He was also the proud grandpop to Ashlee and Brooke Prejean. He was also the beloved big brother to Susan Eileen married to Bryan McMullen from New Brunswick and was the proud uncle to Sherry McMullen. He was a proud Legion member where he met many friends in whom he cherished. He proudly served in the United State Marine Corps. "Mac celebrating his 90th" HUFF, Gordon Mac February 20, 1917 - August 24, 2007 It is with sadness we announce the death of Gordon Mac Huff, a man who gave generously to his family, his friends and neighbours, and to his community. Born in Chatham, Ontario, over the years Mac lived in Kent Bridge, Hamilton, London, Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa. Mac had a 'brilliant career' as a top salesman for Addressograph Multigraph where one of his major accomplishments was the development and sale of a machine to print postal money orders, which ended up in every postal outlet in Canada. And in his very active social life, Mac helped to found the first ski club in London, Ontario, he was an early member of the Ottawa Hunt Club, and a longstanding and faithful member of the Rideau Kiwanis. After his retirement Mac provided countless volunteer hours building custom adaptive equipment for the Ottawa Children's Treatment Centre. His great passions for woodworking led him to join Ottawa's wood turners' community as well. Mac was predeceased by his beloved wife Angela (nee Neumann) and his brother Jim (Frances Burton). He is survived by his nieces Katheleen (Jake Banky), Margaret (Peter Huff-Rousselle) and Elizabeth (Jamie Sargent). 'Uncle Mac' spread bad jokes and good humour wherever he went and was a much-loved favourite of his grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He regularly terrorized the west coast on board his old pal Bob McCollum's boat and could claim full responsibility for establishing the tradition of the Sunday-morning Caesar among the Gulf Islands of British Columbia. Mac's commanding presence and his extraordinary sense of fun will be missed by his family and by his many friends and neighbours on Woodview Crescent, Blackburn Hamlet (Ottawa). The family wishes to express thanks to the employees of the Ottawa General Hospital, the Elisabeth Bruyere Health Centre, and most of all at 'Amica at Bearbrook' - where so many have provided Mac with supportive and skilled care over the past few years. And finally the family would like to express our deepest appreciation to Hugh O'Gorman and to Ellen Philps. EVANS, Margaret On August 27, 2007, in peaceful slumber, Margaret Evans, beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, great-aunt and great-great-aunt, was peacefully released from years of pain to God's loving care at the age of 91 years. Margaret was predeceased by her adoring and adored husband, Kenneth George (1996), her dear sister Mona-Lee Ward (1990), her dear brother and sister-in-law, William Sr. (1994) and Connie (1998) Ward and her two beloved nephews, Daniel Evans (2003) and William (Bill) Ward Jr. (2006). She leaves to mourn her passing and celebrate her life, her loving daughter Mary Lee (Tom) Novecosky and their children, Ethan and Sydney of Calgary; and her loving son Christopher (partner Patrick Best) of Edmonton and Christopher's former wife Theresa and their children, Michael, Danielle and Stephanie of Morinville. Also left upon her passing are her sisters-in-law Doris (nee Evans), Beth (nee Evans) and Lillian, several nieces and nephews, numerous great and great-great-nieces and nephews and many friends, among whom her family is privileged to include the caring staff of Unit 7C at the Edmonton General Continuing Care Centre, who looked after her with great love for the last six-and-a-half years of her long and blessed life. Margaret was born in Calgary on June 4, 1916 to William and Bridget Lee Ward. Her penchant for hard work and devotion to family and charity clearly came from her parents. Margaret attended St. Mary's Girls' School in Calgary and subsequently earned her legal secretary's degree. In her earlier and more able years, Margaret was an avid sportswoman who enjoyed skating, skiing, hiking, horseback riding, curling and golf. She always treasured the hole-in-one certificate that she earned at the Inglewood in Calgary. She was actively involved in charities like Meals-On-Wheels and gathering clothing and household items for the poor, and was also active in the Secular Franciscan Order, St. Francis Fraternity. It was while working for a law firm in Calgary that she met her dearest Ken. They were married in Coeur d'Alene, ID in 1960 and spent thirty-five wonderful years together, until he was taken suddenly after open heart surgery. It was not until her sixties that arthritis began to take a severe and mounting toll on her petite frame. Her interests shifted to less physical endeavors like making dried flower art work, her investment club and delivering communion to shut-ins. She was steadfast in her resolve not to let her escalating pain deter her from her deep commitment to her family and she always placed their needs above her own. Her frail figure could not hold back her kind, loving spirit - and for that, we shall miss her dearly. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. John Catholic Church (9830 - 148 Street), on Saturday, September 1, 2007 at 9:30 a.m. followed immediately by Interment and a social gathering and luncheon at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery & Chapel (4820 Meridian Street). MAROFKE, Hans Ulrich November 30, 1922 - August 28, 2007 Hans Ulrich Marofke died peacefully August 28, 2007 at Foothills Hospital in Calgary of heart and respiratory complications. Hans was born in Boguschau Graudenz, Poland, the oldest of seven siblings, and spent most of his formative years in Duisburg, Germany. Hans married his loving wife Natalie Vollmer on March 21, 1948 after serving his country during World War II as a paratrooper, returning home decorated with his country's highest honors. Immigrated to Canada in 1958 with his wife and first daughter Heidemarie. There he continued on in his occupation as a welder after which he became a respected and long-term employee of the Calgary General Hospital. During those years his family was blessed with two more children, son Manfred and daughter Brita. His family blossomed to include four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Hans' love of music passionately inspired his children and grandchildren. He loved singing and often treated those around him with his favourite tunes. He was a bassist in the St. Matthew Church Choir and a founding member of The German Canadian Male Chorus. Hans was the cornerstone of his family. His unselfish stewardship and commitment to keeping his family strong and unified is his legacy to us all. Grandchild Sonja once wrote these words to him in a note which perfectly expresses how the family feels: "Opa,... when I look at you I see incredible strength and endurance. You have defied every doctor's prognosis and the fact that you are walking around today and enjoying as much as life has to offer is a testimony to your fantastic strength and character! Through your example I have learned how to be strong, work hard, and never to give up. You expect and give the most and best of yourself, and you have taught me the same about myself. Thank you...I am proud of you and inspired by you, I love you." To Papa, your spirit will be with us always, your love is still our guide, and though we cannot see you, you are always at our side. Giguère Edmour 1933 - 2007 À l’hôpital St-François d’Assise, le 22 août 2007, à l’âge de 74 ans et 3 mois, est décédé monsieur Edmour Giguère, époux de madame Marie Hébert. Le service religieux sera célébré, en présence des cendres, le 1er septembre 2007 à 14h, en l’église Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens (angle rue des Roses et boul. du Jardin, Charlesbourg) où la famille recevra les condoléances une heure avant la cérémonie. Murray was born in Grande Prairie to Max and Evelyn, March 8, 1950. After spending his first year in Beaton River, BC the family relocated to Macklinville (GP) and settled on the family farm east of Grande Prairie, where Murray's love of the land and animals grew. As the eldest of eight, Murray often assumed responsibility for his mother and siblings while Max was away in the oil patch. He relished life and found fun in everything he did. At the age of fifteen, Murray's sense of adventure expanded his horizons as he set off on an epic canoe trip from GP to New Orleans with a close friend. His love for performing and athletics led him to experience many things in high school, from winning a drama award, to playing hockey and football. Murray graduated in 1968 and left home for his first rig job at eighteen years of age. He later returned home to help build Gangster Transfer, the family business, with his father and brothers. Murray's marriage to Gloria Morrell, brought a new chapter in his life with the birth of his first child Tel (1971), followed by Tyrel (1978), Trent (1980) and Tia (1982). They raised their family on a farm east of Grande Prairie. Murray and Gloria's place was a hub of social events. His children continue to carry on his adventurous spirit in their own lives. Polo was Murray's passion. In 1976, Murray was a founding member of the GP Polo Club. With humble beginnings in western saddles, his team continues to be a world-class competitor, playing amongst royalty and in many places around the world. Murray's charisma was instrumental in the success of the Sutherland Inn. His love of people and entertainment, whether serving the famous "bucket o' beer" or dancing with K.D. Lang, made everyone feel welcome. His success flowed over into many other business ventures. Murray traveled extensively with family and friends. His thirst for knowledge and excitement meant breaking conventional barriers. On his many journeys he was known to connect with people whether staying in a third-world village or traveling 5-star resorts. Character is what mattered and he sought to connect with the real person inside. In the mid-1990's Anne Graham came into his life. In recent years they bought a ranch where they enjoyed entertaining family and friends. On the banks of the Wapiti River is where Murray found much peace and happiness. Murray was predeceased by his parents Max and Evelyn and infant sister Theresa. Murray is mourned by his family: Gloria, Tel (Laura, children Madison and Shelby), Tyrel (Corrie, grandchildren Taya and Koy), Trent (Chas), Tia (Jamie, children Kaylee and Tyra) and his companion Annie. Murray is survived by Kelly (Debbie), Sharon (Don Nelson), Debbie (Marty Wilson), Kirk (Kathy), Darlene and Bunny Sutherland as well as many nieces and nephews.
