Loving grandmother of Andrew and Peter. Step-Gran to Alex and Samantha Brazeau. Daughter of the late William Richard and Ruby Loney. Mabel Esquash (Swain) April 16, 1916- January 9, 2007 It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of Mabel Esquash at the Grace Hospital on January 9, 2007, at the age of 90 years. Mabel was predeceased by her husband Charlie Esquash, brothers; Fred and Raymond Swain, one sister; Rosemarie Esquash, four sons; Morris, Albert, Thomas, and Kenneth, one daughter; Shirley, grandchildren; David Scott and Colleen Esquash, great-grandchildren; Angel and Sonia Martin, and Tara Esquash. Mabel is survived by daughters; Clara Esquash (Mike), and Grace Esquash (Simon) both from Winnipeg, brother; John Swain (Theresa) of Swan Lake, MB, sisters; Vinna Swain of Swan Lake, MB, and Mary Chartrand of Duck Bay, MB; 28 grandchildren, 74 great-grandchildren, 24 great-great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Mabel was born and raised in the community of Swan Lake First Nation. She attended the Portage La Prairie Residential School. Mabel married Charlie in 1932. Together they had 7 children. With 2 sons passing away in infancy, Mabel and Charlie went on to raise their 5 surviving children on the Swan Lake First Nation. Mabel and Charlie celebrated 53 years of marriage until the time of his passing in July 1985. Mabel was a strong woman who helped her family and loved ones through many of life’s hardships. She was well known for her cooking and old-fashioned canning abilities, and was a generous hostess to all those who stopped in to pay her a visit. She touched many a heart in her special way that was hers and hers alone. Family and community were so important to her. Through her life Mabel cared for many people; upon her sister’s passing, she became a second mother to Rosemarie’s children; Charlotte Daniels, Dorothy Mayner, Gerald, Jimmy and Yvonne Esquash, as well as raising 4 of her own grandchildren. Mabel was the epitome of the old saying “the glue that keeps the family together” she was loved dearly and well- respected by all who knew her. Mabel’s passing will leave emptiness in everyone’s life and hearts, for she was a big part of everyone’s life. Our only comfort is that she is now with Grandpa Charlie, whom she missed dearly. Wake will be held on Friday, January 12, 2007 at 4:00 pm, at the Swan Lake Community Hall. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2007, at the Swan Lake Community Hall at 2:00 pm. Mary Verbrugge (nee DeGrouwe) Mary was born on April 24, 1900 at Aalter Belgium, and passed away peacefully on January 16, 2007 at the Notre Dame Foyer at the age of 106 years. Mary was predeceased by her husband Frank (1995), her parents Kamiel DeGrouwe (1950) and Romanie DePauw (1966). Mary was also predeceased by three brothers; Alphonse (Mathilde) Delichte, Ernest (Martha) Verbrugge and Victor (Marie) Buydens; and one sister Alice (Ludger) Gagnon. Mass of the Christian Burial will be con-celebrated by Rev. Father John Te Nguyen and Rev. Father Firmin Michiels from the St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church on Saturday January 20, 2007 at 2:00 pm. John Ernest Badiou It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our Dad on Friday, January 12, 2007 at the young age of 68 years at St. Mary's Hospital, Camrose, Alberta with his family by his side. Anyone who met Dad would agree that he was a character, soft hearted, kind, generous and he liked to meet and talk to everyone. He was also an avid country music listener and dancer. As kids we remember times spent with Dad fishing, camping and traveling to different places in Canada and America as we followed him during his career as a pipeline welder. With patience and the goodness of his heart, Dad taught us our life lessons. John will always be loved and remembered by his daughter Claudette (Vlad) of Winnipeg; two sons Kelly (Tammy) and Richard (Hazel) both of Calgary; their mother Donna; four grandchildren; one step-granddaughter and one step-great granddaughter. John will also be missed by his six brothers: Marcel (Georgette), Gabriel (Helene), Hubert, Fernand, Louis, and Henri (Jocelyne); two sisters: Marie-Ange (Alphonse Lesage) and Lorraine Demare; two sisters-in-law: Renée and Alice; and many nieces, nephews and friends. BENT, Janet Elizabeth (nee O'Connor) 1944 - 2007 Janet Bent passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 26, 2007, at the Foothills Medical Centre. Born in Halifax on October 3, 1944, she was daughter of the late James and Christina O'Connor. Proud alumna of Mount St. Vincent University, Janet will be remembered for her extraordinary thirty-year career teaching science at Brebeuf Junior High School where she touched the lives of many students and faculty. BYE, Edna Lydia (nee Faechner) 1921 - 2007 Edna Lydia Bye, of Calgary, passed away on June 27, 2007 at the age of 85 years. Edna was born on July 7, 1921 in Hanna, AB. Throughout her career she worked in the hardware business, which spanned over thirty years. Her greatest passion in life was her family and spending time with them. She also loved gardening, cooking and truly adored the Christmas season. COX, Derrick Ronald 1936 - 2007 Derrick Ronald Cox, beloved husband of Marlene of Calgary, passed away on Thursday, June 28, 2007 at the age of 71 years. Derrick was born in London, England on January 25, 1936. He and Marlene were married on June 11, 1960 and moved to Calgary on September 9, 1974 to make a new home. Derrick was a creative handyman, energetic square dancer, and was always willing to help others. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather who will be dearly missed. Besides his loving wife of forty-seven wonderful years, Marlene, he is survived by his son Trevor and wife Shelley, and their sons, Logan and Sean, all of Okotoks; and daughter Arlene and husband Douglas Dunscombe of Calgary. JACOBSON, Anna Ruth, born July 14, 1922 at Duhamel, Alberta, the youngest of Garman and Anna Jacobson's twelve children, died at Foothills Hospital, June 27, 2007. L.O.V.E. was her voice mail password. Love was Ruth Jacobson's personal password to life. Her love came from one source - renewed daily and then distributed freely - and that source? Ruth's Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Never having married, Ruth is survived by one sister, Ellen (Derek) Erskine of Upper Hutt, Wellington, New Zealand, eleven nieces and nephews, eighteen great-nieces and nephews and three great-great-nieces and nephew. Ruth's life was one devoted to family and friends and when she recently entered the hospital, her nieces and nephews surrounded her for the last forty-four days of her life. Her many friends called daily sending words of support and encouragement - only returning the love and caring Ruth Jacobson gave without reservation. Ruth's life has ended but the effects of her love, encouragement and daily prayers continue to be exhibited in the lives of each person she touched. A Celebration of Ruth's life will be held 4:30 p.m., Sunday, July 1 at First Church of the Nazarene, 65 Richard Way S.W., Calgary. LYE, William C.H. Joseph 1929 - 2007 William C.H. Joseph Lye, beloved husband of Teresa Lye of Calgary, passed away on Saturday, June 30, 2007 at the age of 77 years. William was born in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia to proud parents, John Lye and Lucy Chong. He began his career joining the Hong Kong, Singapore, and Sabah Police Forces. William rose to the rank of Head of the Criminal Investigation Division before his retirement. In 1978, he was elected as a Member of Parliament in his Home State of Sabah. William was immediately appointed as Parliamentary Secretary to the Federal Government of Malaysia. He was subsequently promoted to the post of Deputy Minister. For his enormous contribution to the State of Sabah, he was conferred the title of "Datuk" by the Governor of Sabah. William was a devout Catholic who devoted the majority of his time helping the sick and the poor. His hand-made rosaries and arranged printing of Chinese Bibles were distributed to orphanages and churches in Malaysia and China. William's love of travel took him and Teresa across five continents and over twenty countries, making many life-long friends throughout their travels. William is survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Teresa; his loving mother Lucy; sister and brother-in-law, Annie and Francis Chong; daughters and sons-in-law, Florence, Alexandra and Chi-Fui Chong and Susanna and Sunny Ma; sons and daughters-in-law, Leonard and Brenda Foo, and Hilary and Jeanette Lin. He will also be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren, Jeannette (Chris Baldwin), Alexander, Ian, Tracy, Lucinda, Patrick and Victoria. EDWARDS, Jean Margaret passed away in Calgary at the Rockyview Hospital on Thursday, June 28, 2007 at the age of 93 years. Jean always cherished the memory of her parents, Dr. W.F. Edwards and Anna Edwards (nee McCracken). She was born in Airdrie on May 4, 1914. After elementary school in Airdrie, Jean attended Crescent Heights High School followed by Calgary Normal School at the campus which is now S.A.I.T. During the 1930's she taught in country schools at Acadia Valley, Inverness, Melvin and Turner Valley. During the war, she left teaching to work at the Dewinton Flying School and CFAC Radio, followed by five years at Consolidated Mining. Then it was back to teaching at Canmore (1952 to 1954) and at various Calgary Elementary Schools (Rideau Park, Sunalta, Wildwood and Buchanan), before retiring in 1978. While with the Calgary Board of Education, she completed her B.A. and B.Ed. at the University of Alberta and the University of Toronto. During her retirement at Point McKay she completed a book on the history of the Edwards and McCracken families. She was a faithful member of the congregation of Parkdale United Church, where she made many new friends. Jean is survived by her brother Stanley and his wife Jean, of Toronto; nephews, Paul, David, Doug, Jim and John; and by eight great-nieces and nephews. "Auntie Jean" will be especially missed by her Calgary family, Paul and his wife, Helen Heacock and Rebecca, Alasdair and Conor, and her youngest nephew John. VANRUTTEN, Pierre a le regret de vous annoncer le décès de Dr PIERRE VAN RUTTEN à Ottawa, le 30 juin 2007. Il laisse dans le deuil son épouse Irma Garbelotto; ses filles: Béatrice et Emmanuelle, son beau-fils Mohammed, ses sœurs: Marie-Louise, Ghislaine et Suzanne; son frère Fernand, son beau-frère Michel, ses belles-sœurs: Anne et Thérèse et de nombreux neveux et nièces. Il fut prédécédé par son frère Jean et son beau-frère Alfred. Né à Bruxelles le 3 juillet 1920, il passe sa jeunesse à Tournai. En 1940, ses études universitaires sont interrompues par la deuxième guerre mondiale. Après une tentative infructueuse de rejoindre l'armée en Grande-Bretagne, il s'engage dans la résistance et devient lieutenant dans les services belges de renseignements. En 1944, il réussit à rejoindre l'Angleterre pour son entraînement de commando et participe à la libération de l'Europe. En 1948, il s'installe en Afrique, notamment au Congo belge et au Rwanda, où il gère des petites entreprises. En 1960, au moment des troubles au Congo, il se lance dans l'enseignement. Il enseigne au Kivu et Kinshasa le grec ancien et le latin. Recruté par le Collège de Brébeuf à Montréal, Pierre arrive au Canada en 1962. En 1965, il entreprend ses études de doctorat à l'Université d'Ottawa ce qui commence une féconde carrière universitaire orientée vers la littérature et la stylistique littéraire. En 1977, Pierre devient professeur titulaire à l'Université Carleton dans le département de français. Au cours de sa carrière de professeur, il publie quatre ouvrages, parmi lesquels sa thèse de doctorat intitulée Le langage poétique de Saint-John Perse. A l'âge de 50 ans, il se marie et par la suite devient père, rôles auxquels il ne s'attendait pas. Il vécut une vie de famille heureuse. Le souvenir de son esprit vif, sa curiosité intellectuelle, son dévouement et sa générosité resteront dans la mémoire de ses proches. Ses décorations et distinctions incluent, entre autres, Commandeur de l'Ordre de la Couronne, Officier de l'Ordre de Léopold, Chevalier de l'Ordre de Léopold II avec palme et la Croix de guerre avec palme. En 1981, il reçut le Prix Christophe Plantin. Les visites auront lieu à la Maison funéraire Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 rue McLeod, Ottawa, Ontario, le mercredi 4 juillet de 14h à 17h et jeudi de 18h à 20h. Les funérailles seront célébrées à l'église St-Thomas d'Aquin, 1244 rue Kilborn, Ottawa (détails à suivre), suivies de l'inhumation au cimetière Capital Memorial Gardens, Nepean. Darren Kyle Goderis Passed away very suddenly at the Lorne Memorial Hospital in Swan Lake, Manitoba on June 28, 2007 at the age of 35 years. Beloved son of Eddie and Rita, brother to Lorianne (Dwayne) Lytle. Loving uncle to Jaimee, Ryder and Dawson. He is also survived by his “second family” the Pictons. Darren was predeceased by his grandparents Victor and Suzanne Buydens and Adrien and Sarah Goderis. Darren was born on August 20, 1971 in Winnipeg, MB. He attended school and graduated from Westmount School in 1990. Darren worked at Willmar Windows and presently at Burnbrae Farms in Winnipeg. He was always the quiet gentle man who never had an unkind word to say about anyone and an avid fan of “all” sports. He especially enjoyed golfing with his dad and Duey, and long telephone conversations with his mom. He was always there for Lorianne and family, up for the challenge of a card game or playing catch with Jaimee, Ryder and Dawson, and attending all their hockey games if possible. He was quietly a part of all family gatherings . Darren was the most devoted fan of the Winnipeg Jets, Blue Bombers, The Moose, The Goldeyes and the Swan Lake Cougars. He was always the home town fan, never loosing faith in his team. Wrestling was another of his special interests. Just the mention of the word brought a smile to his face. Anyone who knew Darren could count on him to supply any sports trivia you could ever want to know. He kept stats and had a wonderful memory for little details most of us would have forgotten. Spending many hours reading at Chapters, he knew actors, movies, singers and athletes. He never failed to amaze us with his wealth of knowledge. CARRIER, GERTRUDE M. - St. Stephen, N.B. Gertrude M. Carrier, 63, died Sunday, July 1, 2007 at a St. John hospital. Gertrude was born in St. John, December 8, 1943, daughter of the late Michael and Cecile (Guignard) Frigault. She married Fred J. Carrier in 1964. Gertrude was employed for several years at Clark's Variety in Calais. She was a Communicant of Immaculate Conception R.C. Church in Calais. Gertrude enjoyed gardening, camping, and spending time with her grandchildren. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Ivan Frigault. Surviving are her husband of 43 years, Fred Carrier; three children, Michael Carrier and his wife Julie and Scott Carrier and his wife Crystal, both of Calais, and Tonya Carrier and her companion Denny Crowden of Virginia Beach, VA; four sisters, Diane Doucette and her husband Art of St. John, N.B., Levina Losier of Charlottetown, P.E.I., Teresa Ball and her husband John of Alberta, and Jeanette Stills and her husband Jim of Toronto; five grandchildren, Courtney, Devon, Dylan, Colby and Darian; and several nieces and nephews. FEARON, VERNON - The death of Vernon (Buzz) Fearon of Charlo occurred on June 30, 2007 at the Campbellton Regional Hospital at the age of 84. He was the son of the late Harry W. Fearon & Pearl (Holmden). Buzz was employed at the NBIP as a Chief Scaler for over 40 years. PHILIPS, Jules Desire Charles - A longtime resident of R.R.#6 Chatham, Jules Philips died on Friday, June 29, 2007 at Meadow Park Nursing Home, Chatham at the age of 94. Born in Ossendrecht,The Netherlands, son of the late Charles and Florence Philips. Beloved husband of Eliza Rosalie (DeBruyn) Philips for more than 66 years. Loving father of Nancy and John Blonde and Betty Ann Philips and Phil Hughes, all of Chatham and predeceased by Robert (Bob) Jules Philips (1996). Grandfather of Shellie and Jay Storey, Todd and Kirsten Philips, Tracie and Mark Paul, Ken and Lisa Blonde, Sandra and Dan Dourocher, Phil and Michelle Blonde, Christine and Barry Ruperet, Kevin Prescott and Kyle Prescott. SHARMAN, Dorothy (nee Lansdell) Dorothy Sharman (nee Lansdell), beloved widow of Bernard, much-loved mother of Richard and Philip, grandmother to Keith and mother-in-law to Jodey and Benoit, died peacefully on June 30 at the age of 89. Dorothy was born in Worcester, England. She attended the University of Leeds and studied Botany and Zoology. There she met her future husband whom she married in 1942. They enjoyed fifty-four years together. In 1966 the family immigrated to Calgary where she lived ever since. A life-long enthusiast for learning, helping, and fostering the same in others, she was always active in the community, volunteered with Meals on Wheels and was a member of the Prayer Book Society and the Womans' Faculty Club. Always interested in languages, she returned to university to earn a Master's degree in German literature in her sixties. She endured bombing in World War II and, in her later life, increasing disability, but met all challenges with grace and patience. MORGAN, Norma H. (nee Shields) 1935 - 2007 Norma passed away on July 1, 2007, at the Sarcee Hospice, with her family by her side, after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 71 years. Born in Coleman, Alberta, on August 21, 1935, Norma will be best remembered for her bubbly, cheerful, non-judgemental personality (never a bad word spoken of anyone), her continuous giggle and laugh that would consume the room, her mastery of the piano while Ralph crooned in the background, her love of family and grandchildren (she never missed a hockey game or a dance competition), and her tireless work for the Crowsnest Reunion Committee. Along with her passion for world travel, Norma was affectionately known as "Little Norma" by all her travel buddies. Throughout her battle in the past few years Norma still shared her wit and sense of humour, refusing to give in to this terrible disease. Norma is survived by her loving family, Ralph, her husband of fifty years; her daughter Wendy (Ron) Chapman; her loving sons, Rick and Gary; her beloved grandchildren, Brad, Kevin and Jill Chapman; and her brother Bill (Helen) Shields of Cranbrook, BC. Also left to mourn are several brothers and sisters-in-law; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as an enormous circle of friends. Norma was predeceased by her sister Helen (Lawrence). A Memorial Service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Thursday, July 5, 2007, at 2:30 p.m. Norma will be cremated and have her remains released in the hills where she grew up in the Crowsnest Pass, knowing full well that part of her will remain there, but also, those famous strong Chinook winds will undoubtedly carry her to many of her favourite destinations that she visited throughout the world. WILKIN _ Edwina (Be) (nee Clingman) 1930 - 2007 Be Wilkin, passed away on Sunday, July 1, 2007 at the age of 77 years. "Remember, there's no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end." This quote perfectly describes how an incredibly kind, elegant and dignified lady lived each day during the seventy-seven wonderful years she gave us. After an intense battle with cancer, Be passed away peacefully with a spirit of contentment, at her home in Calgary. Born in Amarillo, Texas, Be moved to Oregon and then on to Canada in 1953. BYWATER, Colleen Kay - It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Colleen in her 80th year on Friday June 29, 2007 at Charlotte Eleanor Englehart Hospital, in Petrolia, in the arms of her loving family. Married for 61 years, she deeply loved and was loved by her husband and companion Jack. She will be missed by her three sons, Richard (Lorna), Craig (Sharon) and Blake (Suzanne). Colleen was a proud grandmother to Shane, Jesse, Robin, Dustin, Justine, Heidi, Gavin, Daniel, Emilie and John, as well as three great grandchildren. She will be lovingly remembered by her niece and life-long friend Shirley Whitcombe, along with many other nieces and nephews who cherished their “Auntie Colleen.” Sadly missed by special cousin Fred Shellswell, who was like a son to her, and by numerous friends she gathered over her lifetime. Colleen was predeceased by her parents Alice and Edward Newton, sisters Eileen, Gladys, Jenny, Betty and brother Lloyd as well as sister-in-law Mary. Colleen was born and raised in Kirkland Lake where she met Jack at 17 who promised her a life that would never be dull, and dull it was not. Colleen and Jack lived in Orillia then Sarnia, raising three sons before purchasing Island Lake Lodge in Northern Ontario, where for 20 years she worked side-by-side with her husband, providing loving hospitality to her guests and employees alike. Her hearty meals and decadent baking were renowned to the fishermen and hunters who visited the Lodge. Her generosity of spirit will never be forgotten. Upon retirement Colleen and Jack gratefully spent their summers on Four Winds Island in Wah-Wash-Kesh Lake and wintered in Homosassa Springs Florida before “settling down” back in Sarnia. Visitation will be held at the McKENZIE & BLUNDY FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTRE, 431 N. Christina St., Sarnia on Tuesday, July 3, 2007 from 3-4 pm.
