On June 16, 2007 Raymond I. Campbell of Englehart died at the Englehart and District Hospital. He was in his seventy-fifth year. Mr. Campbell is survived by his wife Barbara; children Lorraine Brace (Paul) of Warkworth, Kirk Campbell (Bonnie) of Stoney Creek, Darlene Smith (Mike) of Kenora, Valerie Kennedy (Jim) of Englehart and Lisa Buck (Nigel) of Englehart; grandchildren Marcie (Reese), Erin (Blair), Carrie, Christopher, Tera, Shaun (Karla), Steven, Ryan, Michael and Mathew; great-grandchildren Duncan, Colin, Mya and Mitchell; siblings Dave, Elmer, Ken, Elaine and Lloyd. Archie A. Baker of Kapuskasing, died at Sensenbrenner Hospital on May 29, 2007. Mr. Baker was born on Nov. 11, 1920 in Big River, Saskatchewan. He worked as a senior stock runner. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and travelling. He is survived by his wife Diane; daughter Margaret Baker (Jean Soublière) of Ottawa; three sons: Morris (Renée) Baker of Kap, Donny Baker of Peterborough and Robert (Angela) Baker of Petrolia; one sister Alice Kennedy of New York and grandchildren: Jim, Jason, Gilles, Jake and Aaron. Joseph Parent of Kapuskasing, died at Sensenbrenner Hospital on May 30, 2007. Mr. Parent was born on Feb. 19, 1918 in Haileybury. He worked in human resources. He was a justice of the peace for the area until the age of 70 and was a historical buff. Lucia Baril Boulianne of Kapuskasing, died at Sensenbrenner Hospital on May 31, 2007. Mrs. Baril was born on July 8, 1911 in Mistassini, Quebec and arrived in Kapuskasing in 1924. She was a member of the Golden Age Club, the UCFO and the Ladies of Ste-Anne. Mrs. Baril enjoyed playing cards, reading and bowling. She was described as being an excellent cook and was a lady who helped others. She is survived by two sons: Lucien (Madeleine) of Val Rita and Armand (Estelle) of Kap; four daughters: Simone (Luc) Fortin of Kap, Thérèse (Jean) D’Astous of Montreal, Lucienne (Yvon) Murray of Val Rita and Irène Baril of Orleans; son-in-law René Ouimette of Val Rita; sister-in-law Jeanne Boulianne of Kap; 19 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. Mrs. Baril was predeceased by her husband Arthur; one daughter Cécile Ouimette and seven brothers: Ludger, Thomas-Louis, Joseph, Patrick, Charles, Henri and Edmond Boulianne. Donat Desbiens of Kapuskasing, died at Sensenbrenner Hospital on June 1, 2007. Mr. Desbiens was born on June 14, 1931 in Val Rita. He was a truck driver for Star Transfer. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards and watching hockey. The funeral service for Michel Pronovost, 56, of Jogues was held June 9, 2007. He died June 2 in Hearst. Born Aug. 16, 1950 in Clairval, Québec, he came to the area in 1963 to work as a cutter. A big-hearted family person, he also enjoyed the field of mechanics. He leaves his companion Lise Loyer, daughters Nancy (Denis Fillion) of London, Ont., Linda of Kapuskasing, and Kelly Sutherland of Constance Lake, and sons Patrick Duguay and Jason Sutherland, both of Hearst. Also surviving are a sister Thérèse (René Guilmette) of La Sarre, Québec, brothers Roger (Yvonne) of Thunder Bay, Yvon and Lise of Timmins, and Fernand Pronovost of Hearst, and grandchildren Joshua, Kevin and Emily. Rev. Rémi Lessard directed the service at Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption Cathedral. Commemorative donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Bernadette Lauzon of Kapuskasing, died at Sensenbrenner Hospital on June 3, 2007. She was 97. Mrs. Lauzon was born on April 16, 1910 in St Eloi, Quebec. She is survived by son Gilles of Ottawa; four daughters: Michelle (Jean-Guy) Vallière of Penetanguishene, France (Jean-David) Brisson of Azilda, Huguette (Gary) Buchanan of Guelph and Suzanne Tremblay of Timmins; 13 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. The funeral service for Constance Lake elder and longtime trapper Ivy Florence Shaganash, 75, was held June 11, 2007 in Hornepayne. She died June 7 at Hearst’s Notre-Dame Hospital from a brief illness. Born Oct. 16, 1931 at Nagagamisis Lake, she came to Constance Lake in 1975. A trapper up to last year, she enjoyed the outdoors, attending church, sewing moose-hide mitts and moccasins, fishing, swimming, setting fish nets, making quilts, watching hockey, playing bingo, and time spent at the family’s Camp 6 along Hwy 631. In earlier times, she planted trees and picked cones. She was predeceased by her parents Agnes (nee Taylor) and Joseph Shaganash of Hornepayne, sisters Molly and Emma Shaganash, and Margaret Wesley, a brother Johnny Shaganash, and niece Audrey Wesley. She leaves her sisters Charlotte Ineese and Barbara Shaganash, both of Constance Lake, and Hilda (John) Robertson of Longlac, brothers Angus (Hannah) of Hillsport, Mike (Kathleen), Charles (Agnes) and Hank (Kathy), all of Constance Lake, and Ross (Joanne) Shaganash of Sault Ste. Marie, as well as many nieces and nephews, plus great nieces and nephews. During the service directed by Hearst Rev. Douglas Richardson at St. Luke Anglican Church, a special hymn was sung by family friend Tim Wabano. "Ivy lived her life to the fullest," family friend Marlene Esquimaux read in the eulogy. "She lived a happy good life. She was a sweet, happy person, and her family meant the world to her." After her mother’s death, she helped her father raise the siblings, and later some of her nephews. A hard-working, noncomplaining, strong person "who lived a true Christian life," she kepy busy from morning to sundown. Following interment at the Hornepayne Cemetery, a luncheon was served by the Hornepayne Legion.

Pappone, John Patrick 1944 – 2007 The family announces with great sorrow his death on Friday June 22, 2007 at the Timmins and District Hospital after a long and courageous battle with cancer. John was predeceased by his parents Antonio Pappone and Angela Palangio Pappone. He is survived by his brothers Arthur of Timmins and Rene (Mary) of Gatineau, Quebec; two nieces Annette and Elizabeth; and a nephew Jeff; and close cousins and their families. John was manager of human resources, safety and security when he retired from Kidd Creek Mine after some 35 years of service. Prior to that he was a counselor at the federal Department of Manpower and Immigration where he helped to resettle Czechoslovakian refugee in 1968-1969. He also worked part-time at CKGB Timmins between 1964 and 1967. Funeral service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday June 26, 2007 at Sacred Heart Church. Interment will follow at Timmins Memorial Cemetery. Remembrance donations to the Sacred Heart Church – Elevator Project or the Timmins and District Hospital Foundation would be greatly appreciated. The funeral service for Mattice resident Roger Malenfant was held there June 8, 2007. He died June 5, 2007 at Notre-Dame Hospital. Born April 25, 1933 in St-Hubert, Compté Rivière-du-Loup, Québec, he came to Lac-Ste-Thérèse (north of Hearst) and later to Mattice. A cutter for the Selin company until a job injury, he was later a staffer at Hearst’s La Maison Renaissance rehabilitation residence through his 60s. He was an avid angler, hunter, trapper and gardener. Predeceased by his wife Emilienne (née Soucy) Malenfant in June 2003, he leaves daughters Fabienne (Serge) Naud of Laval, Qué., Claudine (Denis) Brunelle of Mattice, and Diane (Ronny Joanis) Malenfant of Hearst, and sons Régis (Joyce), Rino (Janine), Sylvain (Nathalie) and Karl (Lynn) Malenfant, all of Mattice, Mario (Carole) of Hearst, and Gaston (Irène Fortier) Malenfant of Winnipeg. Also surviving are sisters Aline (Armand Landry) of Montréal, and Marie-Rose Malenfant and brothers René and Arsene (Béatrice) Malenfant, all of St-Hubert, as well as 19 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Rev. Gérald Chalifoux directed the service at Eglise St-François-Xavier in Mattice. Interment followed at St-François-Xavier Cemetery. Commemorative donations may be made to the Canadian Foundation for Cystic Fibrosis.

François (Ti-Bé) Turcotte of Kapuskasing, died at Sensenbrenner Hospital on June 14, 2007. Mr. Turcotte was born on Nov. 21, 1926 in St-Agnes, Quebec. He worked as a truck driver. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and enjoyed playing golf and crib. He is survived by one brother Jean-Paul of Clermont; sisters: Georgette Turcotte (Roland Girard), all of Notre-Dame- des-Monts, Thérèse (Joseph) Tremblay and Fernande Turcotte (Martial Castonguay), all of Montreal, Pierrette Turcotte (Felix Bergeron) of Beauport, Eliette ‘Lili’ (Donald) McLellan of Petawawa, Etienne Turcotte (André Lepage) and Hélène Turcotte, all of Clermont. Mr. Turcotte was predeceased by three brothers: Marcel, Lionel and Roland and one sister: Lucienne Turcotte. Father Jean Morin will lead the funeral service June 22 at 11 a.m. at Nativité de Marie. Nazaire D’Amours of Kapuskasing, died at Extendicare Nursing Home on June 14, 2007. Mr. D’Amours was born on Feb. 2, 1916 in Trois-Pistoles, Quebec. He was a health counsellor. Mr. D’Amours was the first teacher in Gregoire Mills and owned a sawmill on Chain Lakes Road. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, fourth degree, the Golden Age Club, a counsellor for the Addiction Research Foundation and a school council member for many years. He enjoyed fishing, reading and travelling. He is survived by his wife Jeannette; step daughters: Doris Coutu of Sturgeon Falls, Jo-Ann Dozois of the Dominican Republic and Lyne (Michel) Gauthier of Kapuskasing; step sons: Ronald (Denise) Audet, Laurent (Lisette) of Val Rita and Luc Audet of Kap; sister Thérèse Caron of La Pocatière, 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Mr. D’Amours was predeceased by many brothers and sisters: Jos, Charles, Jeanne Jean, Anna Rioux, Jean-Baptiste, Achille, Marie-Louise Favreau, Alice Pelletier, Appolinaire, Gérard, Roland and Rose Vandal. Séguin, Monique (née Barberie) Passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, June 27, 2007. Nina Elizabeth Thomas was born in Orillia, Ontario on April 8, 1914, the elder daughter of Mary Jane Ross and Theodore Thomas. The Thomas family moved from Orillia to the Temiskaming area, where Nina was educated. On August 30, 1939 Nina married John (“Johnny”) Vander Vliet and joined him in the family bakery located in Parry Sound and later in New Liskeard. Their baked bread and goodies were well known and patronized until the mid 1960s when they retired and sold the bakery. Johnny’s poor health overtook him in 1969 when he predeceased Nina. Nina then went on to work for the Temiskaming Health Unit screening children in the schools for audio and visual concerns. Nina loved to travel and enjoyed a number of trips to the U.S., British Isles, and Europe, as well as time in Florida with her sister Verna, and brother-in-law Reginald Turnbull, both of whom predeceased her. On July 21, 1972 Nina married George McCarty and before his illness they enjoyed boating, hunting, fishing and gardening together. In January, 1987 George predeceased Nina. Throughout Nina’s life, music was a constant, singing and playing the piano for relaxation, at the Northdale manor and at Christmas family gatherings. She was also a life long member of St. Paul’s Congregation, and active in the United Church Women, and the church choir. A high point of her life was her work in the Eastern Star where she was its pianist, and a loyal member for many years. She was also involved in the Rebekahs and a member of the Temiskaming Community Choir in its early years. Nina lived happily at the Northdale Manor for the past eight years. On June 16 she died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 93 years at the Temiskaming Hospital. Funeral service in the care of Perrin Funeral Chapel, and celebration of life, took place on June 19 at St. Paul’s United Church with Reverend Frank Cummins officiating. Pallbearers were grandchildren Dana Dodds, Terry and Julie Phillips, Chantal Durling, Jocelyn Shaver and Renée Robert. Nina leaves surviving her three stepdaughters Dorothy (George Dodds), Janet Leveille and Peggy (Roger) Beauchamp, as well as 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Jean Sophia Taylor died peacefully at the age of 83 at the Temiskaming Lodge in Haileybury on June 18, 2007. She was born in Montreal on August 29, 1923 to Kazys Brastauskav and Elzbieta Velionis. Mrs. Taylor was a former resident of Montreal and Ottawa and had worked as a Personal Care Giver with Sitters Unlimited. Mrs. Taylor was predeceased by her parents; her husband William Taylor and by her partner John Borutski. She is survived by her loving daughters Patricia Taylor Olzewski (Chris) of London, Ontario and Elizabeth Foley (Kevin McFarland) of Cobalt. A graveside service will be held at Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery in Montreal, at a later date. Memorial contributions to the OSPCA will be gratefully acknowledged by the family. Following a long illness, Maureen Appleton-Falardeau died on June 19, 2007 at the age of 71 at the Temiskaming Hospital, with her loving husband by her side. She is survived by her loving husband Raymond Falardeau; daughter Audrey (and Leo James Young) of Hamilton and by her grandson Mark Bergquist; as well as her brother Robert (Theresa) Appleton and sister Shirley (Art) Laroche. MURPHY, Patrick - 1936 - 2007 - Passed away on June 15, 2007 at the Foothills Hospital. Pat was born in Sudbury, Ontario and moved to Calgary in 1953. He joined the military and served with the P.P.C.I.I. including a tour in Germany. He was predeceased by his parents, Rosa (LeBlanc) Murphy and Henry Murphy, both born in Field, Ontario. Pat leaves behind his dear family, Arlene Murphy, son Darran (Kathy) Murphy, brother Ben (Helen) Murphy, sisters, Patricia (Shea) O'Hanlon, Huguette (Victor) Castonguay, and numerous nieces and nephews. Some of Pat's employment consisted of work as a mechanic, trucking, and later the family operated a transportation and welding business. Loving father of Jacques Porlier (Beatrice) of Sudbury, Angèle Chartrand (Paul) of Noëlville, Lorraine Courchesne (Claude) of Alban, Michel Porlier (Caryl) of Morinville, Alta., Lise Sharp (Mike) of Manitick and Lucie Lemieux (Luc) of Sturgeon Falls. Predeceased by his son Roland. Also predeceased by his brothers and sisters, Gabrielle Bureau (late Edmond), Lucien, René (Rosa of Sudbury), Gérard (late Evangeline), Gilbert (late Alice), Jean (late Lina) and Henri (late Rita). Sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his 16 grandchildren and his 10 great- grandchildren. Predeceased by his granddaughter Linda. Mr. Porlier was retired from M.T.O. after 23 years of service. Prior to moving to the Sudbury area, Albert was a long time resident of Alban, where he took great pride and joy in his greenhouse, showing off his production of vegetables. Lloyd enjoyed giving back to his community throughout the years and did so by being involved with the Children's Aid Society, Big Brothers Association, Minnow Lake Lions Club and with the Copper Cliff and Sudbury Minor Hockey Association. He certainly left his mark in our community and will be missed by all who knew him. As per Lloyd's wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation at Park Lawn Crematorium. Gloria Jean touched many lives during her short journey in this life. With her loving companion Vic, Gloria developed an enjoyment for golf and a compassion for sailing and willed herself to sail one last time on the Polski Orgorki June 7th for the annual Sail Past at the Sudbury Yacht Club. TASTULA, Valpas “Wally“ - In loving memory of Valpas “Wally“ Tastula 74 years, who passed away Saturday, June 23rd, 2007 at the Sudbury Regional Hospital - Laurentian Site. Born in Kaustinen, Finland, he married Maija 55 years ago. Valpas worked as a heavy equipment operator at INCO for 36 years, retiring in 1990. He was always happy and he was devoted to his family. He was a member of St. Matthew's Church and the Sudbury South Seniors. Valpas was a skilled woodworker and a gifted musician, sharing his music at church and at home. He also enjoyed spending time at his camp on Tyson Lake. The family wish to thank Dr. M. Dube, the nurses and staff on 4th and 8th floors at the Laurentian Site, and Pastor Jussi Kataja for the care and kindness. Beloved husband of Maija (Valikaugas) Tastula of Sudbury. TOMLINSON, Florence Mary - In Ottawa on May 5, 2007. Born in Brantford, Ontario on February 23, 1921. Daughter of the late Lloyd and Edna (Graham) Tomlinson. Survived by her sister Isabel Burrows; nephews John, James (Dawn) and Donald Burrows; great nephews James, Daniel, Benjamin and Christopher. Florence enjoyed a fulfilling nursing career in Kitchener/Waterloo, the Royal Canadian Navy, Brantford and Philadelphia. After graduating from the University of Toronto in Public Health Administration, she was Director of Nursing in Sudbury and Barrie. Florence possessed a searching mind, enjoying world travel, current events, music and art. UKKOLA, Stanley Sakari - In loving memory of Stanley Sakari Ukkola, 39 years, who passed away Tuesday, June 19th, 2007, after a brief illness, at the Sudbury Regional Hospital - Laurentian Site. Beloved son of Raimo predeceased April 12, 2007, and Tarja Ukkola of Sudbury. Loving grandson of Terttu Kulju of Finland. Dear brother of Johnny and Susan Humphrey (partner Roger). Sadly missed by many friends. Born in Sudbury, he graduated from Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School and was an honours student at Cambrian College, graduating as a welder and layout foreman. Stanley loved nature, camping and was known as a fisherman's fisherman. He enjoyed working in the bush, clearing brush and collecting the next year's firewood. Stanley was an animal lover, especially dogs. At Stanley's request, there will be no public visitation or service. Cremation at the Park Lawn Crematorium. René Brunet of Kapuskasing, died at Sensenbrenner Hospital on June 3, 2007. Mr. Brunet was born on Nov. 19, 1915 in Bonfield. He was a heavy equipment operator for Spruce Falls Pulp and Paper. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and trapping. He is survived by two sons: Gaëtan (Ghislaine) and Guy, all of Kap; six grandchildren: Serge, Patrick, Debbie, Ken, Lee and Tammy; and 10 great grandchildren. Mr. Brunet was predeceased by his wife Léonie Brunet; one daughter Rita Blais; one son Gaston; and one sister Léona Selbie. Father Fernand Villeneuve will lead the funeral service today at 10:30 a.m. at Immaculée Conception. Mr. Brunet will be interred at the Kapuskasing Cemetery. Octavia (Lefebvre) MacFarlane, 110 Brunetville Road in Kapuskasing, passed away at Sudbury Regional Hospital, Laurentian Site, on June 14, 2007. She was 76. Mrs. MacFarlane was born in Moonbeam on May 12, 1931. She worked as a registered nurse. Mrs. MacFarlane was predeceased by her husband (name not given), sister Dolly Levesque and brother Vic Lefebvre. She is survived by two sons, Bruce (Beverly) of Sturgeon Falls and Garnet (Marie) of Trenton; sisters Amanda Simard and Teena Budd, both of Kapuskasing, and Cecile Desormeaux of Val Caron; brothers Midas and Mitch Lefebvre, both of Moonbeam; grandchildren Dale, Amy and April; and great grandchildren Allysha and Alexis.
