MARTIN, Robert Roy 36, of Kentville, Kings County, Nova Scotia and Sudbury, Ontario, passed away on Sunday, May 13, 2007 in Kentville. Born in Sudbury, he was a son of Freda (MacDonald) (Martin) Smith, Kentville and the late Cleason Martin, Sudbury. He had been employed for eight years with Pine Hill Lumber in Lively, Ontario. He was later employed in Ottawa as a cook with both Patty Bolands and Burdons on Clarence Street and the Quality Inn in Sudbury. He was a happy and outgoing individual who enjoyed playing pool. In addition to his mother, he is survived by two brothers, Alan (Janet) Martin, Sudbury and Gerry (Laurie) Martin, Ottawa; two nephews, Wynn and Korby; a niece, Amanda; his step-father, Merle Smith, Kentville and his family. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there will be no visitation by family request. A memorial gathering will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 18, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Donations in memory may be made to the Lung Association. MURPHY, Dr. Arthur Birmingham On May 14, 2007, at the age of 93, Dr. Arthur Birmingham Murphy passed away at Van Horne Manor, Smiths Falls, Ontario. The second child of the late Dr. William Samuel Murphy and Jane Elizabeth Birmingham, he was born in Smiths Falls, Ontario on March 20, 1914. He received his early education in the Smiths Falls Elementary School and Collegiate Institute, graduated from Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario in 1937 in Medicine, interned at the Ottawa Civic Hospital and began private practice in Smiths Falls in 1939. In March of 1942, he joined the Canadian Army Medical Corps with the rank of Captain and was transferred to the United Kingdom in 1943, served with Number 14 Field Ambulance in the 3rd Canadian Division. He landed in Normandy on D-Day at H-Hour + 10 minutes with the 3rd Canadian Division and particularly with the 7th Infantry Brigade saw action throughout Normandy, France and Belgium. After Victory, he was transferred to Number Two Canadian General Hospital, England, on surgical staff until October 1945 when he returned to Canada. He resumed practice in Smiths Falls in 1946 where he was engaged in general practice embracing most of the disciplines of medicine including obstetrics, gynecology, pediatrics, general medicine (now referred to as family medicine) and general surgery. During his 42 years of Medical Practice, he was known for his dedication to his patients, and his excellence in surgery. In 1964 he was appointed a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons in recognition of his abilities. In addition to his patriotic feelings to Canada during the war, he became interested in education in Smiths Falls and was elected to the School Board and became a driving force to renew the aging and obsolete schools which resulted in the rebuilding of all schools during this period, with the exception of one which was renovated. He was later elected to Town Council with a view of revitalizing employment and during this period Hershey Chocolate and the Rideau Regional Centre were brought to Smiths Falls. He was an avid golfer and was a member of the original founders of the Smiths Falls Golf and Country Club where he served as President and in other capacities including past Club Champion. He was married to Margaret Ruth Chant in 1936 and was predeceased by her on March 12, 2000 after 63 years of marriage. He is survived by his three children, Joan Elizabeth Corbett (John) of Collingwood, Ontario, William Arthur Murphy (Wendy) of Smiths Falls, Ontario, and Catherine Ann Murphy (Ron) of Kingston, Ontario; his grandchildren, David John Corbett (Jan) of Belleville, Ontario, Christine Elizabeth Acker (Brian) of Toronto, Ontario, Catherine Jane Tilley (Michael) of Coloma, Michigan, Douglas Andrew Corbett (Lauren) of New Caanan, Connecticut, Darragh Catherine Caplan (Stephen) of New York, Erin Beverley Binnie (Matthew) of Toronto, Ontario, Jacqueline Leigh Morphy of Ottawa, Ontario, Sarah Catherine Morphy of Whistler, B.C., and Leslie Ann Morphy of New York, and thirteen great-grandchildren. He took great interest in the lives and careers of his children, grandchildren and their spouses and enjoyed hearing of their life journeys and looked forward to the arrival of new grandchildren. A voracious reader of both fiction and non-fiction, he had a vast knowledge of history and at times would devour five or six books per week. He was also predeceased by his brother, Dr. William Ormond Murphy Sr., and his sister Edith Margaret Paxton. A memorial service will be held at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 25th, 2007 to be followed by a Reception at the Smiths Falls Golf and Country Club. WILNER, Pearl Pearl Wilner, a long time resident of Ottawa, passed away in Vancouver on May 15th, 2007 at the age of 96. Pearl was born in Russia and immigrated to Canada in her teens together with her brother and two sisters. She lived in Asquith, Saskatchewan and later attended the Normal School (now part of the University of Saskatchewan) in Saskatoon where she received her teaching degree. She taught at a number of small schools in rural Saskatchewan. Pearl married Jack Wilner and settled in Indian Head, Saskatchewan where Jack was employed as a Research Scientist at Agriculture Canada Experimental Farm. Pearl and Jack moved to Ottawa in the late 1950's and Pearl began a long and very rewarding career with the Ottawa Public Library. She spent a number of years as Head Librarian at the Rosemont Branch and continued working part-time for many years after her retirement. Following Jack's death in 1997, Pearl relocated to Vancouver to be closer to family. Pearl was predeceased by her parents, her husband Jacob (Jack) Wilner, her sisters, Rose Levinton, and Ann Ginsberg, her brother Robert Miller and her brother's in law, Harry Levinton and Sam Wilner. She is survived by her sister in law, Eva Miller, brother in law Alan Wilner (Sara) and numerous nephews and nieces. SADIE WOOD 1917 - 2007 Sarah Pauline Wood, known to all as Sadie, died peacefully at Trillium Manor, Orillia on May 15, 2007; in her 90th Year. Sadie was the beloved wife of the late Bob (Charles Robert) Wood. Their infant son Randolph Avery Wood died at birth. Born in North Bay, Sadie was the eldest daughter of the late Bill and Pauline Avery. Predeceased by all her brothers and sisters, Russell and his wife Millie, Gerald, Helen, Kay, Dixie and her husband Bob McBean, and her youngest brother Bill; and by all Bob's brothers, Ken, Bill, Jack, Jim and Andy; and her Wood sisters-in- law, Kay and June. Married in 1941, Sadie and Bob settled in Orillia enjoying a wonderful life together at 186 John Street, the scene of many happy times for all their relatives, especially the children. Proud Canadians, Sadie and Bob travelled together from coast to coast; after his death in 1985, Sadie continued to explore Canada and Europe - her favourite trip was to the Artic Circle. Sadie was a great bridge player, receiving her Life Master from the American Contract Bridge League in 1997. A fabulous homemaker and baker (especially of butter tarts), she also loved to knit for her extended family. Gardening and bird watching in her backyard were a source of great joy. Sadie will be deeply missed by her best friend and sister-in-law Audrey Wood; her special friend Marg Sallows; and her sisters-in-law Jean Wood, Valri Wood and Lucille Avery. Her many Avery and Wood nieces and nephews together with great (& great great) nieces and nephews all across Canada cherish her memory. All will remember her sparkling brown eyes, happy laugh and beautiful smile. LEYLAND, Geoffrey Arnold - Geoffrey passed away on May 12, 2007 at the Nanaimo General Hospital, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Carol. Geoff is also survived by his brothers-in-law Allan (Jane) Klinck and Jim (Mary Lou) Mason as well as his sisters-in- law Carol Lee Leyland and Marilyn Peers all of Ontario. He will be sadly missed by several nieces and nephews as well as the many special friends he leaves behind. Geoff was born in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta on October 2, 1936. Because his father was a member of the Northwest Mounted Police the family moved frequently until they finally settled in Lethbridge when Geoff was in his early teens. It was here that he became interested in flying and at a very early age he acquired his pilot's license. He spent several years as a commercial and corporate pilot and a flight instructor before moving to Leamington, Ontario. He worked for Empress Foods in Ruthven, Ontario before transferring to British Columbia and working for the Versacold Corporation. Geoff faced interesting challenges in his work and he took pride in what he had accomplished. Geoff and his wife Carol retired on Vancouver Island. He enjoyed his garden and his annual winter trips to sunny climates. No service by request. A private celebration of this wonderful proud man's life will be held at a later date. 10659146

ARNOLD, Edwin Garth - April 16, 1943 – May 15, 2007 After a brief battle with cancer, Edwin died at his residence, on May 15, 2007 at the age of 64. Edwin will be lovingly remembered by his wife Judy. Survived by his mother Edith Arnold of Niagara Falls. He will be deeply missed by his sons Robert and his wife Wendy of Mississauga and Christopher and his wife Juanita of Waterloo. He was the much loved Grandpa of Brianne and Brent Arnold and step-Grandpa of Alex and Matthew Shibata. Loving brother of John (Jack) and his wife Stephanie Arnold of Palmyra, PA and Joyce and Rolf Schefold of Niagara Falls. He will also be fondly remembered by Bruce, Lisa, and Wade Shannon, his aunt Mabel and aunt Elsie and many nieces and nephews, also by his former wife Audrey. He was predeceased by his father Harold and sister-in-law Sandy. Ed was a long-time employee of Canbar Industries of Waterloo and Strassburger Windows. He was a member of the Twin- City Harmonizers and the Toronto Northern Lights barbershop choruses. He was also a long-time member of the St. Peter's Lutheran Church choir. Friends are invited to share their memories of Edwin with his family at a memorial service to be held at First United Church, (corner of King and William Streets in Waterloo) on Saturday, May 26, 2007 at 1:00 pm. with Rev. Paul Ellingham officiating. Cremation has already taken place. Following the service in the chapel, friends and relatives are invited to the Fireside Reception Room of the ERB & GOOD FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 171 King St. South in Waterloo, for refreshments and a time to visit with the family.
