LYONS, Douglas Burnell In hospital Thursday, April 19, 2007, age 82. Beloved and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, proud Veteran, and former President of local Square Dance Association. He retired from Maclaren Industries (Thurso Pulp & Paper) as manager in 1989. Survived by his loving wife Dorothy Patteeuw; children James (Jeanne), Allison, and Gaylin; daughter-in-law Kathy; grand-children Scott, Laura, and Sarah; sisters Eleanor (Ed) Lowery and Elizabeth (Howard) Janes and their families; step-children Lynn, Andrea, and Maureen (Phil); step-grandchildren Amanda (Paul), Tracey, Kirstin, Ryan (Heather), Chris, Val, Kara, Cassie, and Krystal; and great-grandchildren Riann and Belle. Predeceased by first wife Iris (nee White) and son Ian. A Memorial service will be held Wednesday April 25 at 11 a.m. in the Pinecrest Remembrance Chapel, 2500 Baseline Road, followed by a reception. RAIHALA, Frans Jaakko (Jack) - With sad hearts, we announce the passing of a loving, devoted husband and dear father on April 12, 2007 in his 93rd year at the Finlandia Nursing Home in Sudbury, ON. Born July 1914 in Kalajoki, Finland, the youngest son of August and Amanda (nee Maki) Raihala, he married Hilja (nee Haapakoski) in 1937. Jack immigrated with his family to Timmins, ON in 1951. A talented and inventive blacksmith and welder, he was employed by the McIntyre Gold Mines until his retirement. In 2000, Hilja and Jack moved to the Meadowbrook Retirement Village in Lively, ON to be closer to their family and where they continued their lifelong active lifestyle. Jack was a WWII veteran whose heartfelt prayer was for world peace. An accomplished musician, his love of music became a legacy to his family. Sadly missed by his wife Hilja and daughters Leila Makela (Mauno – predeceased), Marja-terttu MacLeod (Gregory), Kaija Gasteiger (Will), Helena Lemberger (Frank) and Liisa Picard (Raymond). Proud grandfather of Tommy, David and Mark (Sharon) Kujanpaa, Marni MacLeod, Jesse, Luke (Deborah) and Tyler Gasteiger, Jason Lemberger, Layna (Kipp), Francois (Joanie) and Jocelyn Picard and great-grandfather of Ceara, Conor, Lindsay, Jeremy, Perry and Maglyn. Many nieces and nephews in Canada, USA and Finland also mourn the passing of a beloved uncle. At our father's request, a private family gathering was held as well as a commemorative gathering at the Finlandia Home. EVANS, Susan (nee Lang) - In loving memory of Susan Evans (nee Lang), 92 years, who passed away Friday, April 20th, 2007 at the Sudbury Regional Hospital - St. Joseph's Health Centre. Sue was born in Carleton Place, Ontario on August 28th, 1914 to John and Sara (Donnelly) Lang. As a young woman seeking work, she migrated to Sudbury were she met her future husband, G.E. (Ted) Evans (predeceased 1977). They were married October 23rd, 1939 at the Church of the Epiphany, Sudbury. At that time, she became a lifelong tireless member of the parish. Sue was a well-known and active volunteer in her community and church. She was justifiably proud of her over sixty years of service with the Memorial (Sudbury Regional) Hospital Auxiliary. She was a life member of that organization, as well as a life member of the Anglican Church Women. She was a member of the Altar Guild of the Church of the Epiphany and served many times on the executive of all these groups. For many years, she organized the weekly memorial flowers for the altar of the parish and saw to their delivery to parishioners who were unable to attend services. Renowned for her cooking and baking, “Suse“ or “Aunt Sue“ will be missed by her many nieces and nephews and other family members who all had a favourite recipe that she would happily prepare for them. Conveners of fairs and bake sales at the church had only to telephone and generous donations of pies, cakes, loaves and cookies would result. Susan is survived by her son Ted Jr. (Janet) of Copper Cliff, grandsons David (Kendra) of Bolton, Ontario and Jason (Heather) of Sudbury, and great-granddaughter Alexandra. Sue was the last of her siblings. Predeceased by sisters Betty Deagle, Evelyn Kirwan and Jean Kyrzakos, and by her brothers Tom, John, Mike, Ed, Burt, Ray, and Ken. She is survived by her sisters-in-law Florence and Mary Lang and by her brother-in-law Tommy Kirwan, and by many nieces and nephews. She will be especially missed by Kathy, Mark, Anne, and Lorraine. Florence Gertrude (Gertie) Ryan MIRAMICHI, NB - Mrs. Florence Gertrude (Gertie) Ryan, 71, of Wellington St., Miramichi passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 19th, 2007 at the Moncton City Hospital. She was born in Chatham, the daughter of the late Henry and Helen (Johnston) Cripps. Gertie was a member of St. Michael's CWL, and the bridge club. She loved to volunteer, knitting and reading. Gertie fought a valiant fight with cancer with her ever-present smile, cheerful and witty personality and was a devoted homemaker. Her family and friends will sadly miss her. She is survived by her loving husband, Donald Ryan; daughters, Carol Anne Cormie (Vic Perry) of Moncton, Janet Marie Taylor (Ian) of Waterloo, ON; sons, Donald Jr. (Gail) of Surrey, BC, Timothy (Debbie) of Charlottetown, PE; sisters, Catherine Johnson (late Ross) of Milltown, NB, Edith Ramsay (late Walter), Gladys Cameron (Gerald), Grace Marsh (William) all of the Miramichi; brothers, Joseph (Annetta) Cripps of Fall River, NS, Henry (Nancy) Cripps of Nelson Miramichi; five grandchildren, Courteney Ryan, Sean Ryan, Ryan Cormie, Michael Taylor, Erin Taylor; and by several nieces and nephews. WAITE, Carolyn Fulton (nee Chaplow) - 1918 - 2007. With a deep sense of loss the family of Carolyn (Carrie) Waite announces her sudden passing on Thursday evening, April 19 at Caressant Care Nursing Facility, Bonnie Place, St. Thomas, Ontario. Youngest daughter of the late Frederick and Margaret Chaplow, Mrs. Waite was predeceased by her husband Douglas Charles Waite (1992). The last of her family, she was predeceased by her sisters, Helen; Elva (Mrs. Mark McCorvie): Gordon, William, Norman and John. She was the adored mother of Paul of St. Catharines, Carol (Gary Roberts) of Burlington and Margaret (Douglas Burgess) of Sarnia. Mrs. Waite was also much loved by her grandchildren Christopher and Jeffrey Roberts and Kendra Burgess and Lauren (Aaron) Kilbreath. Her sister-in-law Elizabeth (John) Chaplow also survives as well as two nieces and four nephews. Mrs. Waite was a devoted sister, wife, parent and grandparent. She was the best friend and constant support to her beloved Douglas during his twelve years of illness. Until she was no longer able to drive, she took great pleasure in chauffeuring her lady friends of Knox Presbyterian Church, St. Thomas, to worship each Sunday. She had been a member of the Women's Missionary Society at Knox Church and of the River Road Women's Institute. Mrs. Waite was also a former member of the First Church of Christ Scientist. SPERRY-SLAUNEWHITE, Mabel - Mabel passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 19, 2007, in the loving presence of Fairhaven staff. Born in 1910 in Upper Northfield, Nova Scotia, this amazing woman was an energetic, intelligent, dynamic business woman and a loving and kind wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. New Germany, Nova Scotia boasted of the delicious meals and warm hospitality Sperry's Restaurant offered. Mabel and her husband Gordon Sperry were successful business partners and wonderful parents to Gilbert and Louise. Gordon predeceased Mabel in 1963 and she continued to build on the success that she and Gordon had achieved. Mabel married Howard Slaunewhite in 1969 and moved to Boston, Massachusetts. Howard predeceased Mabel in 1981. She remained in Boston until 1987, she then moved to Ennismore to live with Gilbert and Joyce Sperry. Mabel will remain always in the hearts of her children Louise and her husband Wes DeShane, Gilbert and his wife Joyce and her former daughter-in-law Shirley; grandchildren Peter, Katherine, Wendy, Deborah, Gregory, Heather, Glenn, Brent, Kim, Drew, Josh, Michael, Sarah, Sean, Riley and Caley will treasure their memories of Mabel. She will be sadly missed by her two remaining siblings Margaret Spidle and Gilbert and his wife Noreen Penney, along with her many cousins, nieces and nephews, she was predeceased by eight siblings; Wilford, Victor, Lexie, Clifford, Elmer, Jacob, Rodger, and Glide. KEARNS, Lise Ruth Peacefully in Ottawa surrounded by family on February 10, 2007. Born Lise Ruth Andersen in Copenhagen, Denmark on April 6, 1918. Lise left Denmark for England in 1938. With the outbreak of World War II, she joined the British Army and served as a physical training instructor. She met and married Corporal Aaron Denis Kearns of Ottawa in 1942 while he was serving in the Canadian Army. Lise arrived in Canada at Pier 21 in Halifax on December 16, 1944 with her infant daughter Ruth and continued to Ottawa where she joined her husbands family. Three more children followed after the war, Caroll, Sandra and Paul. Following the early death of her husband in 1951, Lise embarked on a career in sales and management before retiring in 1982. Her work ethic, honesty and love of family were the legacy that she left for all. She cherished the contact with her grandchildren and more recently her great grandchildren. Her daughter Caroll Boucher and her sister Gurli Young predeceased her. She is very much missed by her daughters Ruth (Dr. Jean Baribeau) and Sandra (John Thomas) of Ottawa, her son Paul (Yvonne) of Port Rowan and son-in-law Dr. Claude Boucher of Kapuskasing. Lise was Nana to grandchildren Andre Baribeau of Canmore, Anne-Marie Baribeau of Vancouver, Dr. Paul Boucher (Marianne) of Calgary, Dr. Julie Boucher (Chris Meilleur) of Kapuskasing, Dan Boucher (Johannah) of Ottawa, Aaron and Dylan Kearns of Port Rowan and great grandchildren Alexandra and Timothy Boucher and Emilie and Nicholas Meilleur. MURRAY, Roland Winton Roland Winton Murray passed away peacefully on April 16, 2007. "Roly" was the loving and loved husband of Jacqueline (Levesque), father of Marianne (Dan McLean) and Isabel, and proud grandfather of Cassandra Marie and John Roland McLean. He will also be greatly missed by his sisters Margaret (Guthrie Middleton) and Barbara Ann (Chris Hinde) as well as many friends, nieces, nephews and countless cousins from the Gaspe to Victoria, the US and Europe. Born in Woodstock, Ontario in 1927, Roly grew up in Toronto, graduating from York Memorial Collegiate and the University of Toronto. He won a scholarship to the Sorbonne where he obtained his doctorate in international law. He joined the Foreign Service and was posted to Pnom Penh, the Hague, Belgrade and Moscow, followed by senior government positions in Winnipeg and Ottawa with Transport Canada. Always a gentleman, Roland never lost his innate sense of courtesy, diplomacy and humour. He sought the best in people and left the world a better place. The Murray Family thanks the staff of the Perley Rideau Veterans' Health Centre (PRVHC) for their outstanding care, comfort and support. Janet was born in China in 1919 to British missionary parents and lived there and in England in her youth, meeting and marrying Andre, a Dutch airman stationed in England during the war. They married in Indonesia and during their 66-year marriage also lived in Australia, USA, England, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland and New Zealand before settling in Canada. She is missed by all her family and friends. A lifelong lover of animals and birds, her furry friends Molly, Amy, Beau and Rosie also miss her. A private family celebration of her life will be held. Beloved mother of Karen Christine Kuronen (Susan Wyman) of Yellowknife NWT., Kenneth Ronald Kuronen (Effie) of Sherkston and Kimberly Ann Grutchfield (Jon) of Fort Myers, Florida. Loved grandmother of Tyler & Kelsey Bemis, Lia & Victoria Kuronen and Kaylee Grutchfield. Dearest twin sister of Taimi Csanadi of Fort Erie. Predeceased by parents Hermann & Ida Laitinen and brothers-in-law Carl Csanadi & Sulo Kuronen. Born in Helsinki, Finland, Mrs. Kuronen and her sister moved to Canada and Welland when they were 18 years old. She loved her home and family where she carried out homemaking, gardening and painting, both with oils & water colours and as well enjoyed, cross country skiing. Mrs. Kuronen was a faithful member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. Friends are invited to visit on Sunday, April 22nd from 7- 9 p.m. at the H. L. CUDNEY FUNERAL HOME, 241 West Main Street, Welland. BROWN, (Madeline) June - Peacefully but suddenly at her home on Thursday, April 19, 2007 in her 77th year. She was predeceased by her husband Bob in 1999. Proud and loving mother and grandmother to Jim and Marianne, Andrew, Brinlee and Jordan of Aurora; Susan, Al and Carly of Barrie. Much loved friend and sister-in-law to Helen Vipond. June will be remembered for many things, including her service to her community. She was an active member of both the West Gwillimbury Branch of the IODE and of the Tec-We-Gwill Womens Institute and held life memberships to both organizations. She also served her church, Trinity Anglican for over 50 years. June took great pride in the many pursuits and accomplishments of her children and grandchildren. Her love of cooking, and entertaining and playing bridge with Helen rounded out a full life, well lived. She will be missed.
