Grand-père adoré de dix-sept petits-enfants et arrière-grand-père de seize petits-enfants. Cher frère de Desneiges (feu Tom Larocque) et Gaëtan (Marie Comtois). Prédécédé par une fille Charlotte (Orphir Pilon) de Hawkesbury, et un fils Guy (Lise Leclair) de Hawkesbury, deux petits-enfants Stéphane et Maxime ainsi que par trois sœurs Monique, Rhéa et Madeleine (Raymond Charbonneau) et trois frères Gilbert, Benoît et Lucien. After a lengthy illness, due to cancer and heart problems for many years, Iona Presseault of New Liskeard died January 4, 2005 at the Temiskaming Hospital. She was born on June 21, 1927 to Joseph and Eva Carisse. On January 2, 1946 she married Charles Aimé Presseault at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church in North Cobalt. Mrs. Presseault is survived by her sons Carson, Charles and Ross; daughters Anna Presseault, Eva Peddie and Deborah (Debbie) Demers, Carol Presseault and Toni Plante. She was predeceased by her husband Charles, son Louis, grandson Richard Presseault and granddaughters Sophie Presseault, Lynda and Julie Presseault. The funeral was arranged by Perrin Funeral Chapel with the service conducted by Father John Lemire at Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church on January 8. On January 16, 2005 Paul Anthony LaBine died at the Belleville General Hospital. He was in his seventy-sixth year. Mr. LaBine was predeceased by his parents John and Nora LaBine and wife Nancy LaBine, brother John LaBine (Margaret) and sister Theresa Truchon (Ron). He is survived by his children Alan LaBine of Saskatoon, Mary Boyce (Egerton) of Belleville and John LaBine (Helen) of Timmins; grandchildren Colton and Alexandra; siblings Nora Walsh (Ed), Dennis LaBine (Marie) and Leo LaBine (Rose). The funeral was arranged by the Burke Funeral Home in Belleville with the service held January 18. Cremation to follow. Memorial donations to the Lung Association would be appreciated by the family.

Ellen Proctor died December 12, 2005 at the Northview Nursing Home in Englehart. She had been in declining health for over a year. Mrs. Proctor was born in Kirkland Lake on October 4, 1922 to John and Clare Chegwidden. Educated in Kirkland Lake, she married Thomas Clifford there on May 16, 1945. A homemaker, Mrs. Proctor moved to Englehart in 1993 and then in 2003 to Northview Nursing Home. She was a member of the Women’s Institute in Englehart and loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Predeceased by her husband Clifford on December 13, 1992, and by her grandson Trevor, Mrs. Proctor is survived by her daughters Mary (Bill) Manning and Nancy (Ken) Jefkins; sons Russell (Lorraine), Dennis (Evelyn) and Brian (Kim). The funeral was arranged by Perrin Funeral Chapel with the service conducted by Reverend Blake Carter from Englehart. Pallbearers were Richard and John Wilson, Jeff and Kirk Proctor, John and Nick Loach. Burial is at Rosegrove Cemetery in Kenabeek. Relatives and friends from out of town attending the service came from Kirkland Lake, Timmins, Charlton, Thornloe, Englehart, Elk Lake, Gravenhurst, Owen Sound and Oregon.

Alan Blakely Carleton died at the Temiskaming Hospital on November 28, 2005. He was born to Cecil and Kathleen Carleton on May 22, 1932 in Hilliard Township, where he resided for most of his life. He attended New Liskeard High School and later trained as a security guard and also as a heavy equipment operator. Although he was employed in various occupations, he farmed most of his life. Mr. Carleton married Ena Scott in Uno Park in 1958. Their daughter, Patty, lives in Ottawa, where she is a math teacher. Son Brian resides in Thornloe. He is also survived by grandsons Jake and Ryan; brothers Jim (Madeline) in McArthur Mills, Ken (Joan) in Englehart and Les (Lillian) in Hilliard Township; sisters Mary (Ron) Wark in Hilliard Township, Pat (Morris Ryan) Robertson in Englehart, and Lynn in Toronto. He was predeceased by brother Lorne and sister Ruby West. Funeral arrangements were made by Perrin Funeral Chapel with a service conducted by Peter Kerr at the Bethel Gospel Chapel. Eulogy was given by Royce Bilusack of North Bay, longtime friend of the family. Other friends and family added remembrances of Mr. Carleton’s life. Music was provided by Linda Korte and Avis Weber. Pallbearers were nephews Ron Carleton and Dan Wark, brothers-in-law Jim and Bill Scott and friends Chad Koch and Ernest Villneff. Burial will take place at Hanbury Cemetery in the spring. Relatives and friends attended from Ottawa, Toronto, Guelph, North Bay, Tri-Towns, Earlton, Englehart, Hilliardton and surrounding areas.

On December 3, 2005 Paul Emile Lachapelle died at the Temiskaming Hospital at the age of 71. Born at St-Eugène-de-Guigues, Québec to Ovila Lachapelle and Rosia Bernèche, Mr. Lachapelle was a resident of Haileybury and had worked as a millwright at Sherman Mine in Temagami for 19 years. He was a faithful member of Holy Cross Church and a Fourth Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Lachapelle was also an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting. He is survived by his loving wife Gracia Girard whom he married 50 years ago August 20, 1955; his children Yvan (and Shirley Fournier) Lachapelle of Orléans, Alain Lachapelle of Montréal, Guy Lachapelle (and Hélène Frappier) of Ste-Foie and Eliane Lachapelle of Port Hope; grandchildren Martin, Daniel, Julie and Alex; and his sister Cécile (and Hector) Lamirande. The funeral was arranged by Buffam Leveille Funeral Home in Haileybury with the funeral mass celebrated at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Haileybury Wednesday, December 7 at 11 a.m. Father Germain Turcotte officiating. Cremation followed with interment of the ashes at the Haileybury Catholic Cemetery. Memorial contributions to the Alzheimer’s Society will be gratefully acknowledged by the family.

Paul Perron After a courageous battle with lung disease, Paul Perron of New Liskeard died December 1, 2005 at the Temiskaming Hospital. Mr. Perron was born in Nédelec, Québec, on November 16, 1936 to Octave Perron and Irène Proulx. Educated in Nédelec, he married Adrienne Boucher there in 1963. In 1988 he moved from Cochrane to North Cobalt and in May of 1995 moved to New Liskeard. A retired businessman who was formerly a motel and restaurant owner, he loved travelling and boating. He was also a member of Sacré Coeur Church in New Liskeard. Mr. Perron is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Adrienne; sisters Berthe, Rita, Jeanine, Lucette, Patricia, Pierrette, Lise and Céline; brothers Martial, Bernard and Michel; many brothers- and sisters-in-law, nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his mother and father, brothers Roger and Daniel and sister Hermance. The funeral was arranged by Perrin Funeral Home with the service conducted at Sacré Coeur Church in New Liskeard by Father Richard Ngoy. Cremation has taken place in Rouyn Noranda. Relatives and friends from out of town attending the service came from Montreal, Sudbury, Cochrane and Rouyn Noranda. Annie L. Watt of New Liskeard died suddenly on November 7, 2005. She was born July 3, 1922 in the New Liskeard area to Rachael and Bill Watt and in 1942 she married Marcel Gagne. Mrs. Gagne was a member of the Haileybury Friendship Club and various groups. She enjoyed quilting, knitting, bingo, cards and family. Mrs. Gagne was predeceased by her parents, her husband Marcel in 1979, brothers Orville Tretheway, Carl Watt, Colin Watt and son-in-law Garry Sopchyshyn. She is survived by her son Edward (Laura), daughters Annette, Madeleine (Eldon Ziebarth), Marlene (George Belandis) and Lorraine (Randy Sopchyshyn) and brother Clifford Tretheway. The funeral was arranged by Perrin Funeral Chapel in New Liskeard with the service conducted by Kitty Miller. Evelyn Valley died suddenly at her residence in Englehart on November 12, 2005. Born in Cobalt on December 11, 1921 to Clifford Valley and Iva Parcher, she received her education in Kirkland Lake. Ms. Valley worked as a bookkeeper at T&W Grocery Store for 45 years. She enjoyed being a leader of Brownies and the Girls’ auxiliary of Christ Church of Englehart and was an active member of the church. Ms. Valley is survived by her sisters Irene Leaper (Archie), Florence Driscoll (Frank) of Toronto, Barbara Leaper (Doug) of North Bay, and was loved by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister Olga Thorpe, brother Wendel, parents Clifford and Iva Valley and brother-in-law Archie Leaper of Cobalt. The funeral was arranged by McDonald Funeral Home in Englehart with the service to be conducted at Christ Anglican Church on November 17 by Reverend Richard White and Canon Bain Peever at 11 a.m. Visitation is Wednesday, November 16 at McDonald Funeral Home from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Cremation to follow with final burial at the Kirkland Lake Cemetery with her parents. On November 9, 2005 John Delmar Butler of Kemptville died at the Queensway Carleton Hospital. He was born on March 15, 1921 in Kazabazua, Quebec to Alexander and Lillian (Wilson) Butler. Mr. Butler attended the Kemptville Agricultural School in 1939 and worked at the National Research Council until joining the Royal Canadian Air Force on June 26, 1942, regimental rank LAC #CAN.R1692. During his days of service, Mr. Butler worked as a radar technician and served in England during World War II. On February 18, 1943 he married Mae Cairine Morin, eventually having three children. He received an honourable discharge on October 29, 1945 and transferred to the Reserve, General Section Class “E.” Mr. Butler went on to attend Macdonald College at McGill University, working summers at the Ottawa Experimental Farm and graduating in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science in agriculture. He then joined the Ontario Department of Agriculture, working as an agricultural representative in Clinton from 1951-53, followed by Renfrew from 1953-58 and finally in New Liskeard until his retirement. During his time in New Liskeard, Mr. Butler was manager of the New Liskeard Demonstration Farm and the principal of the New Liskeard College of Agricultural Technology. In 1981 he and his family relocated to King City where he established the equine program at Seneca College. He spent the remainder of his life raising and training horses. Mr. Butler is survived by his wife Mae Cairine (Morin) of Kemptville; children Karen Bruens of Vegreville, Alberta, Lawrence Butler (Eileen) of Kemptville and Jill Butler (Murray Webb) of Brisbane, Australia; grandchildren Shawn Farion (Tammie), Kerri Farion, Ginny Farion, Christopher Farion, Jeffrey Butler (Leeanne) and Andrew Butler (Jacqueline); great-grandchildren Ethan and Devon Butler; sister Marie Wiebe. He was predeceased by his brother Orville, sisters Pearl Cosgrove (William), Helen Margaret and Frances Elizabeth Moore (Leslie), and sons-in-law Richard Farion and George Bruens. A service in memory of Mr. Butler will be held November 19 at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church in Kemptville. Father Shim officiating. Following the service, friends and family are invited to the home of Larry and Eileen Butler to celebrate Mr. Butler’s life. Interment is at Notre Dame Cemetery in Ottawa on November 21 at 11 a.m. Memorial donations to the Alzheimer’s Society would be gratefully appreciated by the family.

Doris Lillian Hayes died November 2, 2005 at Extendicare Nursing Home in Haileybury. She was born in Harley Township on January 5, 1925 to Lillian and Frank Loach. Educated at Hanbury School, she married Earl Hayes in Hanbury in June, 1943. Mrs. Hayes enjoyed sewing, cross-stitch, knitting and she enjoyed her grandchildren. She was also a member of the Community of Christ. She is survived by her daughters Connie Spangler (husband Ray), Kathleen (and Dave McInall) and Linda (and husband Mike Lacroix); grandchildren Jayson Spangler (wife Nancy) of the Netherlands, Carmen Spangler (fiance Earl) of Toronto, Greg Spangler (wife Christina) of Toronto, Heather Bowers (husband Art) of North Cobalt, David McInall of Goderich, Shannon McInall of New Liskeard and Morgan Lacroix of Montreal; great-grandchildren Darion and Alexandra Bowers, Cameron and Matthew Spangler; and brother Roy Loach. Mrs. Hayes was predeceased by her husband Earl. The funeral was arranged by Perrin Funeral Chapel in New Liskeard with the service conducted at Community of Christ Church by Kent Fielder. Cremation has occurred with burial at the Harley Township Municipal (Hanbury) Cemetery. Memorial donations were made to the World Accord. Marie Jeanne (Jeannie) Bastarache died October 21, 2005 after a short illness at the Temiskaming Hospital. She was in her ninety-first year. She was born in Trois Rivieres, Quebec, on August 16, 1915 to Mathias and Sarah Bastarache. Educated in Earlton and in Nicolet, Quebec, she married Joseph Hamilton in Englehart in 1942. Mrs. Hamilton was a homemaker and mother, a quiet helper to those in need. She came to New Liskeard from Virginiatown in 1971 after her husband retired. In 1994 Mrs. Hamilton moved to Sarnia to be with her sister Laurianna who had suffered a stroke. She stayed there to care for her until Mrs. Hamilton herself had a heart attack in 2001. She then moved to her sister Joan’s in Milton and then to the Temiskaming Lodge in Haileybury. Mrs. Hamilton’s ninetieth birthday was celebrated at a family reunion and party in August 2005. She was a member of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Parish and longtime proud member of the Catholic Women’s League of Canada. Mrs. Hamilton was predeceased by her husband Joseph in 1973 in New Liskeard, parents Mathias and Sarah Bastarache, in-laws Bill, Evelyn, Sid and Peter. She is survived by her daughter Catherine (Bert) Wilhelm of Arizona; sons Gerald (Mitch) Whitby and Michael of Nepean; granddaughters Kristal Wilhelm and Debbie Hamilton; grandsons Walter (Linda), Albert and Heman Wilhelm and Mathew Hamilton; great-grandchildren Anton, Albert, Daniel, Jennifer and Helman; sisters Laurianna Bastarache of Sarnia, Joan Roncato of Milton and Gerry Fournier of New Liskeard; and by many nieces and nephews. The funeral was arranged by Perrin Funeral Chapel in New Liskeard with the service conducted at Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church on October 24 by Father John Lemire. Pallbearers were Gus Dekkers, Dallas Rostad, Dennis Fournier, Ernest Ouimet, Daniel Estrada and Anton Estrada. Burial is at the Catholic Cemetery in New Liskeard. Relatives and friends attending the service from out of town came from Whitby, Milton, Toronto, North Bay, Englehart, Palgrave and the Tri-Town area. On October 25, 2005 Ethel Marguerite Edwards of Dack Township died at the Englehart and District Hospital. She had been ill for five months. She was born at the Victoria Hospital in London, Ontario on November 11, 1917 to Frances Ellen and Fred Samual Charlton. Educated in Dack and Charlton, she married Arnold Edwards in Englehart on January 24, 1934. Mrs. Edwards always took an active interest in her community. She was a club leader for many years in the 4-H Clubs. She spent many years as an active member of the Willing Workers and only slowed down the past year due to her health. She was an active member of the Rebekah Lodge and Past Nobel Grand. Many years along with her husband Arnold were spent in the Agriculture and Horticulture Societies as workers, showing, judging, and teaching. She represented the Ladies Division at the Local and the District Level for Ontario. Mrs. Edwards was keen on anything she put her mind to — from knitting, embroidering, needlepoint, to dress design, making quilts, as well as making many of the flower arrangements for neighbours and family weddings. Throughout many years, she kept a running diary of the weather and precipitation for the federal government. Mrs. Edwards is survived by her sons Douglas (Norma), Gordon (Pauline) and daughter Sandra Edwards (Sonny Armitage); 10 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents Frances Ellen and Fred Samual Charlton, her husband Arnold after 65 years of marriage, sister Myrtle and brother Cecil. The funeral was arranged by McDonald Funeral Home in Englehart with the service conducted at Good Shepherd Congregational Christian Church on October 28 by Reverend Linda J. Martin. Pallbearers were grandsons David Edwards, Judd Hards and Neall Hards, great-grandsons Corey Houle, Darren Edwards and Leaman Rodgers. Burial is at the Englehart Cemetery. Relatives and friends attending the service from out of town came from Toronto, Barrie, Ottawa, Port Perry and North Bay. After a battle with cancer, Barry Miller of New Liskeard died October 23, 2005 at the Temiskaming Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was born in York, England on February 20, 1945 to Audrey and Clare Miller. He married Louise Laffin on June 10, 1967. Mr. Miller managed the family farm (Millercrest) near Thornloe until 1993 whereupon he sold the farm. He moved to New Liskeard and worked as a transport driver, travelling throughout Canada and the United States until he became ill. Mr. Miller loved his family, gardening, people, driving and socializing. He is survived by his wife Louise; sons David and Kevin; daughter Jill (Matt); mother Audrey; sisters Edith (John) and Beth (Murray). He was predeceased by his father Thomas Clare Miller. The funeral was arranged by Perrin Funeral Chapel in New Liskeard with the heart-filled service conducted by Reverend Kitty Miller at St. Andrew’s United Church in Haileybury on October 26. The eulogy was written and delivered by his daughter Jill with readings by his sister Beth and his niece Angeline. A song was sung by Ryan Peters. Pallbearers were sons David and Kevin, cousin Byron, brother-in-law Pete and friends Mal and Jeff. Cremation has taken place with burial at the Thornloe Cemetery on October 29. Relatives and friends attending the service from out of town came from Toronto, Ottawa, London, Markdale and North Bay.

On October 19, 2005 Daniel John Ryan of Englehart died as the result of a truck accident at Butler Lake. He was born in Englehart on June 30, 1978 to Carolyn and Kevin Ryan. Educated at Charlton/Savard Public and Englehart High School, he worked as a refractory bricklayer — Sudbury Local 28. He was also a member of the Lions Club. Mr. Ryan was known as the best daddy and husband, an amazing tradesman, a wonderful son and brother — he definitely was a hell of a guy. Mr. Ryan is survived by his wife Khrissy; daughters Dannee and Jenna; mother Carolyn; brothers Justin (Maeghan) and Travis; sisters- and brothers-in-law, his mother-in-law, many aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his father Kevin Ryan. The funeral was arranged by McDonald Funeral Home in Englehart with the service conducted at the Community Hall on October 23 by Reverend Linda Martin. Pallbearers were Jeff Bond, Gino Duguay, Ivan Seguin, Jeff Oda, David McLean and George McCallum. The Honour Guard was made up of Sudbury Local 28 bricklayers. Relatives and friends attending the service from out of town came from New Liskeard, Temagami, North Bay, Sudbury, Lively, Cobourg, Toronto, Sarnia, Kirkland Lake, Timmins and Larder Lake. In memory contributions may be made to a trust fund for his daughters Dannee and Jenna Ryan.

On October 14, 2005 Ronald Arthur Gilson died peacefully at the Temiskaming Hospital at the age of 60. Mr. Gilson is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Shirley Gilson (nee Browne); children Susan Gilson of Innisfil, Robert (Sylvia) of Redbridge; brothers Ernie and Richard; grandchildren Robbie, Mariah, David, Kaitlyn, Richard, Amanda and Steven Gilson, Kayla and Shannon Vaillancourt and Jennifer Irwin; many nieces, nephews and his many friends in the area. He was predeceased by his parents Millage (Bud) Gilson and Lucy Rose (Gilson) McNaught, sons Ronald Richard and Allen Brian. Mr. Gilson was actively involved in the mining exploration business for many years and loved to be out in the field prospecting and staking claims until his health problems prevented him from doing so. He loved hunting and fishing and enjoyed playing the guitar and having a sing song. Mr. Gilson was a very generous person and he touched many people’s hearts and will be sorely missed by the mining community. There will be a celebration of his life at his home at 12 Martin Drive in Cobalt at 2 p.m. on October 22 for friends and family. The family would appreciate that any donations be made to the Temiskaming Hospital CAT Scan Foundation in Mr. Gilson’s memory. His ashes will be buried at the Silverland Cemetery with his sons. The family thanked Dr. Sears, the ICU staff and the palliative care nurse at the Temiskaming Hospital for their excellent care and compassion during Mr. Gilson’s hospital stay.

Following a brief illness, preceded by a wonderful life, Eileen O’Farrell passed away peacefully on October 6, 2005 at London’s University Hospital. Predeceased by husband Patrick (1976), beloved mother of Shaun, Steve (Lori), Lynn and Breeda; Gramma “O” to Jenny (Geoff), Aaron, Adam, Brendan, Keely and Maureen; Great-Gramma to Tyson; stepbrothers Michel and Maurice Byrne; brother-in-law Armand Cloutier and sister-in-law Edith Morin. Will be missed by many, including friends in the Catholic Women’s League, the card group, retired staff of English Catholic Central School, the aqua therapy sisters, the Northern Telephone gang, the Sutcliffe Crescent neighbourhood, and members of Our Mother of Perpetual Help (OMPH) parish. Visitation is at Perrin Funeral Chapel in New Liskeard on Thursday, October 13 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The funeral mass is Friday, October 14 at 11 a.m. at Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church. On July 13, 2005 Marissa Bailey of Charlton died suddenly at the Englehart and District Hospital. She was born in Timmins on October 17, 1990 to Basil and Brenda Bailey. She was a wonderful, beautiful child who touched the life of every person who knew her. Miss Bailey is survived by her sisters Sara and Shannon; brother Christopher Despres (Pam); nephews Colton and Riley; grandmothers Mildred Widdifield and Joyce Bailey; and by many aunts, uncles and cousins. She was predeceased by her grandfathers David Bailey and Clarence Widdifield. The funeral was arranged by McDonald Funeral Home in Englehart where the service was conducted July 15. Pallbearers were cousins Kevin Passenier, Paul Bott, Lisa Milks and godfather Dave Livingston. Burial is in Charlton. Many friends and relatives attended the service. In memory contributions were made to the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.

Joan Donovan of Englehart died suddenly on July 22, 2005 at her home. She was born in Stratford on May 17, 1935 to Ralph and Katherine Ellison (nee McKenzie) and was educated in Stratford and London. She took bookkeeping training at Fanshawe College in London and met her husband Paul G. Donovan through her best friend. They married in Clinton, Ontario, on April 7, 1956 and had one daughter, then moved to Halifax for four years. Mrs. Donovan spent eight years in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, before being transferred to North Bay. Mrs. Donovan was a bookkeeper/receptionist at Stanley Cerisano Real Estate and Peter G. Lush Real Estate in North Bay from 1972-85. In 1985 Mr. and Mrs. Donovan moved to the area from North Bay to be closer to their only child, Kathy Williams and her family. Mrs. Donovan then worked at the Olde Towne Inn in Englehart. Upon her husband’s retirement they moved to Charlton. They lived in Tomstown prior to moving into the housing complex on Tenth Avenue in Englehart seven years ago. Mrs. Donovan was predeceased by her husband Paul on February 25, 2004, father Ralph Ellison on October 15, 1982 and mother Katherine Ellison on June 16, 1985. She is survived by her daughter Kathy (husband Vincent); grandsons Bradley (Julie) Williams of Cobalt, Leslie (Heather) Williams of Neustadt, Ontario, and James (friend Selena Thompson) Williams of Englehart; mother-in-law Ruth Donovan of Pictou, Nova Scotia; sister-in-law Jean Slaunwhite (husband Keith) of Halifax; and great-grandchildren Austin, Katelyn and Sara Williams of Cobalt. The funeral was arranged by McDonald Funeral Home in Englehart where the service was conducted July 25 by Reverend Peter Dahlin. Pallbearers were son-in-law Vincent Williams, grandsons Bradley, Leslie and James Williams, great-grandson Austin and great-granddaughter Katelyn Williams. Burial is at Brentha Cemetery in Dack Township. In memory contributions were made to the Salvation Army, Sick Children’s Hospital, the Toronto Humane Society and the Canadian Cancer Society.

On July 2, 2005 Claire Langlois died at the age of 85 at the Temiskaming Lodge in Haileybury. She was born August 19, 1919 in North Cobalt to Joseph Fleury and Justine Guilbeault. Mrs. Langlois resided in North Cobalt and had just recently moved to Temiskaming Lodge. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed spending time working in her flower garden. Mrs. Langlois was predeceased by her parents, six brothers, three sisters and her husband Fred Langlois whom she married December 29, 1973. She is survived by her loving sister Florence Sauvé of North Cobalt and by many nieces and nephews. The funeral service was held July 5 at Buffam Léveillé Funeral Home in Haileybury. Father Firmin Lafond officiated. Cremation followed. Contributions to the CAT Scan Foundation will be gratefully acknowledged by the family.

Serge Lauzon died August 7, 2005 at the Temiskaming Hospital at the age of 63 years. Born at Granby, Quebec June 13, 1942 to the late Léo Lauzon and Florida Couture, he is survived by his loving wife Pauline Lauzon (née Lafrenière) whom he married October 20, 1962; his children Sylvain Lauzon (and Lucie Archambault) of North Cobalt and Lynne Dubie (and Victor Pressé) of North Bay; grandchildren Jennifer, Jessica, Michael, Stéphanie and Liane; and his siblings Huguette, Paulette, Danielle, Alexis and Vincent. A memorial mass will be celebrated at Holy Cross Church in Haileybury on Thursday, August 11 at 11 am., Father Germain Turcotte officiating. Interment of ashes will take place at the Haileybury Catholic Cemetery. Memorial contributions to the Heart and Stroke Foundation will be gratefully acknowledged. After a lengthy fight with cancer, Bessie Labine ( Hillcoat) died with her family by her side on June 25, 2005 at the Temiskaming Hospital. She was born April 2, 1922 to Robert and Jean Hillcoat in Kerns Township and received her education at SS#1A Kerns Public School and New Liskeard High School. In 1942 she married John Labine and they lived in Cochenour, Ontario where Mr. Labine worked up until 1953 when they returned to Kerns Township to take up farming on Lot 2, Concession 2. Mrs. Labine was an active member in the Women’s Institute, UCW, Sr. Citizens Club and the Kerns Central Lioness Club. Mrs. Labine will be sadly missed by her son Robert and daughter Patricia, son-in-law Steve Cox and grandsons Michael and David Cox and her sister Jean Phillips. She was predeceased by her husband John in 2003 and brother James Hillcoat in 2004. The funeral was arranged by Perrin Funeral Chapel in New Liskeard with the service conducted by Reverend Kitty Miller.

Marie Byczek died at the Kirkland and District Hospital on August 9, 2005. She was a lifelong member of the Polish Society. After a lengthy illness, Elwood Hilton Sweet died peacefully at home on March 25, 2005. He was born in North Cobalt on March 29, 1928 to Elgin and Violet Sweet. Educated at New Liskeard Public School, he married Ruby Evelyn Shortt in New Liskeard on April 19, 1947. Mr. Sweet enjoyed family, fishing, travelling, sewing and being creative in his workshop. He was also a member of the Salvation Army. Mr. Sweet was predeceased by his wife Ruby on August 28, 1994 at the Temiskaming Hospital; parents Elgin and Violet; brother Edric; and sister Margaret. He is survived by his children Larry (Patricia {Pat.), Evelyn (Dennis), Garry (Linda), Bruce (Dorothy), Stanley (Jan), Val (Jeanne Mance) and Myrna (Mike); 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren, nine siblings and many nieces and nephews. The funeral was arranged by Perrin Funeral Chapel with the service conducted by Captains Nelson and Darius Fillier. The eulogy was delivered by his son Bruce with hymns sung by Jody Bigelow. The organist was Doriel Poupore. Scripture readings were by granddaughters Shelly Whitehead and Sheena Sweet and grandson Brad Sweet. A poem of memory was read by granddaughter Sasha Harvey. Pallbearers were grandchildren Darcy Sweet, Derek Sweet, Kelly Harvey, Jennifer Sweet, Shane Sweet and Karrie Sweet. Burial is at the New Liskeard Cemetery. Relatives and friends attending the service from out of town came from North Bay, Cambridge, Ottawa, Kenora, Alliston, Sault Ste. Marie, Orangeville, Iroquois Falls, Cochrane, Matheson, Kirkland Lake and Timmins.

Eileen Margaret Harrison died suddenly at the Tillsonburg Memorial Hospital on March 31, 2005 at the age of 84. She was predeceased by her husband Earl Douglas James Harrison in 1994. Mrs. Harrison is survived by her beloved children Mike (Marg) Harrison of Haileybury, Ralph (Connie) Harrison of Tillsonburg, Brenda (Paul) Likes of Manhattan, Kansas, and Cheryl Harrison of London; grandmother of seven including Barb (Andre) Savoie of Haileybury and Dave (Shelley) of North Cobalt; and great-grandmother of eight including Samantha and Allison Savoie of Haileybury and Rebecca Harrison of North Cobalt. The funeral service was held at Ostranders Funeral Home Chapel in Tillsonburg on April 4. Spring interment is at Woodstock Anglican Cemetery.

Long-time Gowganda resident Benjamin Henry Kirkby died September 23, 2005, at North Bay General Hospital at the age of 69. He had suffered a stroke September 5, and had also suffered from Alzheimer’s disease for three years. The son of John Kirkby and Orca Jibb, he was born in Thornloe May 8, 1936. He came to the Gowganda area from Kerns Township in the fall of 1956. On May 25, 1957, he married Patricia McGann in Haileybury. A firefighter and miner, he was also an avid hunter, angler and trapper, a volunteer firefighter, a Labour Day festivities organizer, and beloved grandfather. Mr. Kirkby is survived by his wife, Patricia; daughter Bonnie (John) Trajkowicz, and sons Doyle and Michael. He is also survived by grandchildren Benjamin, Kayla, Erica, Mackenzie, Sheldon and Abaigail, and sisters Isabel Carleton, Bessie Mason, Donna Fader, Shirley Bowen, Margaret Bowen, and Evelyn Hunt. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers Bob and Gary. Cremation occurred at Forest Lawn Crematorium in North Bay. No funeral was held at his request. A celebration of Mr. Kirkby’s life will be held October 29, 2005, at the Gowganda Community Recreation Association hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Alzheimer Society.

Patrick John (P.J.) Slaght died peacefully at his lakeside home in Little Current, with his family at his side, on October 2, 2005. He was born in 1918 in Haileybury to Marjorie and Hugh Le Roy Slaght Q.C. He was raised in Haileybury, Simcoe and Hollywood, California. He attended Lakefield College and Pickering College. Mr. Slaght worked at Hubert Fuels and owned Slaght Fuels. He was a reporter for the Cobalt Concentrate, worked for the Town of Cobalt as town clerk and treasurer, as well as Justice of the Peace. Mr. Slaght was a founding member of the Cobalt Lions Club and was a member of the Cobalt Legion. He loved to travel, write letters and do his family genealogy. In his later years he enjoyed sitting in his chair and watching sports and the boats passing by. His favourite song was The Cobalt Song and he also loved Christmas carols. Mr. Slaght was predeceased by his parents; his first wife Christine (Teen) Stevens and second wife Stella Wilcox; sisters Marjorie, Barbara and Winifred; brothers Hugh and Elliot (Doc). He is survived by his daughter Judy Nickle (Ron), sons Le Roy (Connie), Patrick (Bernice) and Doug (Anne), daughter Frani Yoshida (Ken) and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Cremation to take place and, at Mr. Slaght’s request, a small family grave side service will be held at the Cobalt Veterans Cemetery in Haileybury, followed by a reception for the public at the Cobalt Legion at 5 p.m. on Sunday, October 9. Donations in lieu of flowers to the Parkinson’s Foundation, the Centennial Manor Electric Bed Fund or the Cobalt Legion would be appreciated by the family.

Joseph Julien Lalonde died September 24, 2005, at the Northview Nursing Home in Englehart after an illness of about three years. Son of the late Catherine Schaffner and Julien Lalonde, he was born in Kirkland Lake on June 27, 1930. He was educated in Kirkland Lake, and worked as a millwright in Tahsis, British Columbia, before starting Carpet King in 1970. He had lived in Pacaud Township prior to moving to the Northview Nursing Home. He was predeceased by his parents; brothers Ernie, Tommy and Lawrence, and sister Agnes McGlade. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Mary Kramp; sisters Josie Grant and Norma Elliot; brother Bob Woods, niece Judy Rudd, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Lalonde was a smart businessman and very generous to anyone in need. A Roman Catholic, he was also very religious. He was also fond of his cat Felix. Funeral arrangements were by McDonald Funeral Home in Englehart, and cremation has occurred. In memory contributions may be made to the Northview Nursing Home.

After a short illness, Wilmer Arthur Nuhn of Chamberlain Township died September 28, 2005 at the Englehart and District Hospital. He was born in Wallace Township on July 30, 1920 to William and Emma Nuhn. Educated at SS#6 Maryborough Township, he married Edna Warren in Charlton on September 30, 1947. He moved to Chamberlain from Gorrie, Ontario in 1967. Mr. Nuhn worked as a transport driver, construction worker and farmer. In 1958 while a driver for Hyndman Transport, he won the Dunlop Tire National Trucking Hero Award for saving the lives of a mother and two children. Mr. Nuhn liked fishing on Lake Simcoe and moose hunting in his younger years. In later years he enjoyed his grandchildren and playing with his 1954 John Deer AR. He also enjoyed watching and feeding hummingbirds and seeing occasional wildlife such as bears, moose or deer that would wander by. Mr. Nuhn is survived by his wife Edna; children Myrna and Sandy Gibson of Gorrie, Ann and Dale Rodgers of Tarzwell, Leonard and Anne Nuhn of Chamberlain; grandchildren Julie and Keith Birnie, Jaime Gibson, Lenny Rodgers, Duane and Paula Rodgers, Bill Nuhn (Jess Davidson), Maija Nuhn (Mike Inglis) and Laurie Nuhn; and sisters Olga, Dorothy and Irma. He was predeceased by his son Bill; parents William and Emma Nuhn; father- and mother-in-law Joe and Florence Warren; sister Amelia Sachs; and brother Oliver Nuhn. The funeral was arranged by McDonald Funeral Home in Englehart where the service was conducted October 1. Pallbearers were Keith Birnie, Duane Rodgers, Mike Inglis, Melvin Warren, Donald Parker and Marvin Sachs. Burial is in Charlton. Dennis Houghton died at his home on May 27, 2005 surrounded by his wife and children. Known as “Denny” to his friends, he was born in Cobalt on September 18, 1920, son of Edward (Ted) Houghton. Mr. Houghton graduated in Mining and Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Toronto in 1943 and worked as a Professional Engineer for The Cobalt Foundry and Wabi Iron Works, Canron, Inc. Mr. Houghton was a strong supporter of the local community, church, and an active member in the Rotary Club. He enjoyed golfing, traveling, and his cottage on Lake Temagami. He had a quiet, easy-going nature and a keen sense of humour that made many friends laugh. He is survived by his wife Rosemary (Steward) and was predeceased by his wife Helen (Fraser) who died in 1995. He is also survived by his sister Norah Traver (nephew Ted) of Fonthill, Ontario; son Fraser (Wendy) and grandsons Graham and Christopher of Mississauga; daughter Elaine (Robert) Jutras and grandsons Nicholas and Jack of Burlington; and daughter Dr. Pamela Houghton of London, Ontario. Funeral services were conducted by Reverend Kitty Miller in collaboration with Reverend Linda White at St. Andrew’s United Church in Haileybury on Tuesday, May 31 with interment at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Haileybury. Donations to the Temiskaming Hospital CAT Scan fund and the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.

Jacqueline 'Jackie' May Phillion, beloved wife of Paul Phillion of Redcliff, died Monday, June 27, 2005. She was 64 years of age. Mrs. Phillion was born on the family farm in New Liskeard. She met Paul Phillion and together they raised their family in Batchawana Bay and the Tri Town area. Mrs. Phillion lived her life for her family, and in 1990, they moved to Redcliff to be closer to their children and families. She made many friends who loved her dearly, and she will be sadly missed by all. Mrs. Phillion is survived by her children: Judy Hillier (David, deceased 2001), Vern (Karen) Phillion of Wabasca, Alberta; Dellon Phillion of Redcliff, Alberta; Tammy (Todd) Dubie of North Cobalt; Troy (Sandy) Phillion of Wabasca, Alberta; Lisa (Paul) Rice of Redcliff, Alberta. Her greatest joys were her grand children and great grand children: Alliesha, Dellon and Valina Phillion; Tanya Bedard; Mathew and Mitchell Hillier; Travis Dubie; Andrew Phillion; Ashley Dubie; Calum Hillier; Adam and Joshua Rice; Dominique and Isaac Dubie; and Austin Phillion. She also leaves her mother Meta Gilbert, sister Joan Laframboise, and brothers — Jim (Winnie) Wall of Peterborough; Rodney (Jean) Wall of Leasburg, Florida; George Wall Junior of New Liskeard; Dave Wall of Las Vegas, Nevada (Vi Wall of Niceville, Florida); Ron (Dorothy) Gilbert of Leasburg, Florida; Rick Gilbert of Orange City, Florida. She will be dearly missed by her sisters-in-law — Teresa Phillion, Irene (Bill) Nagami, and Rita Phillion. Over the years, Mrs. Phillion developed a loving relationship with all of her nieces and nephews, a special uncle Steve and late Aunt Winnie. She is predeceased by her father George Wall. A special thank you to Calvin, Phyllis, Roger, Candi, Kathy, Sharon, Cathy, Sheila, Jessie, John and Terry for the love and care they provided. Family and friends mourn the loss of life-long area resident Shirley Aileen Myers Bush, who died at the Temiskaming Hospital on January 7, 2005 after a lengthy illness. She was born in 1925 and was the chosen daughter and only child of Joseph and Edith Myers. She attended school in Moore’s Cove and New Liskeard and subsequently found employment in local businesses — the Edwards Agency, Hill, Clark and Francis, and Northern Telephone where she worked for many years as a telephone operator. Predeceased by her parents and her husband, Clarence Bush, she is survived by her children Dianne, Doug, Allan, Kathy and Judy; and by six grandchildren. As a member of First Baptist Church in New Liskeard, Mrs. Bush sought to strengthen her faith and was eager to share it with others. She was particularly grateful for the friendship, nurture and support of members of the Bertha Getty Mission Circle. The funeral was arranged by Perrin Funeral Chapel in New Liskeard and was held at First Baptist Church on January 10. Reverend Bob McCarty conducted the service, celebrating her life and faith. Ministry of music was provided by Barbara Boisvert, Linda Goddard and Dawn Hillier. Pallbearers were grandchildren Richard Bush, Jennifer Bush and Vicky Squires, nephews Mansel and Daryl Wilson and family friend Allan Bartlett. Spring interment will take place at the New Liskeard Cemetery. Following the funeral service, friends from First Baptist Church provided lunch in the church hall and an opportunity for fellowship. The family is grateful for this caring ministry. In memoriam contributions, gifts of flowers and food, and other kind expressions of sympathy are acknowledged by the family with deep gratitude.

Temiskaming Lodge resident Isobel Katherine Fearnley died January 18, 2005 at the Lodge. She was born in Englehart on September 28, 1925 to Alexander and Agnes Harkness. Educated in Englehart, she married Jack Fearnley there in 1945. Mrs. Fearnley worked as a chambermaid and as a bank teller at the CIBC and the Credit Union. She lived in Englehart all her life — 55 years in the home she and her husband built — except for the last two years. Mrs. Fearnley loved fishing, hunting and the outdoors. She travelled across Canada, went to Florida for two winters and took a trip to Scotland with her sisters. She also won many awards for her fine crochet work. She was a member of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, the 5Ws, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 104 and the Englehart and District Agricultural Society. Mrs. Fearnley is survived by her children Mary (Cam) Demarce, John (Shirley) Fearnley and Mark (Penny) Fearnley; grandchildren Sean (Kathy) Demarce, Bea (Rick Williams) Demarce, Benji (Kym) Demarce, Gidget (Gerry) Hebert, Lyndsay Fearnley, Nathan and Natasha Fearnley; great-grandchildren Bradley and Haley Hebert, Sheilah and Emily Demarce, Christian and Jillian Williams and Brady Baker; brother William (Audrey) Harkness; brother-in-law Herb Hack; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Jack in 1980, daughter Belle in 2004, sisters Jean and Marg. The funeral was arranged by McDonald Funeral Home in Englehart with the service conducted by Drew Jacques at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church on January 21. Pallbearers were grandchildren Sean, Bea and Benji Demarce, Lyndsay, Nathan and Natasha Fearnley. Burial is in the spring at the Englehart Cemetery. Relatives and friends attending the service came from Englehart, Kirkland Lake, Temiskaming Shores, Haliburton, Sudbury, Elk Lake, Little Britain, Omemee and Bond Head. Scott Wilson died suddenly at his home on Saturday, January 15, 2005 at the age of 78. He was a long-time resident of New Liskeard where he grew up and received his education. Mr. Wilson served in the Canadian Armed Forces during World War II. After the war he met and married his wife of 57 years, Ruby (Knowles). He was predeceased by his parents Margaret and John Wilson, brothers Neil and Andy and sisters Agnes Gray, Jessie Coull and Anne Lasalle. Mr. Wilson is survived by his wife Ruby; daughters Linda (Allan) Knight of New Liskeard and Crystal (Roderick) Young of New Liskeard; brothers Jack of Carleton Place and Robert (Pat) of Haileybury; grandsons Kristen Young of Kingston, Graeme (Dawn) Knight of Bolton, Kirk Young of London and Grant (Brigitte) of Mississauga; great-grandson Hayden Knight; as well as many nieces and nephews. Grandsons and nephews Shaun Wilson and Kevin Chinchen were pallbearers. Perrin Funeral Chapel in New Liskeard provided funeral arrangements. Reverend Kitty Miller conducted the service in celebration of his life. Spring interment will take place at the New Liskeard Cemetery.

After a short illness, Jack Evans of Coleman Township died at the age of 71 on January 15, 2005. Best known for his love of music, he shared his talents of song and guitar for many local events, seniors and nursing homes, as well as many happy hours of playing music with family and friends. Mr. Evans was born July 10, 1933 to Zella (Michener) Evans and Harvey Evans. Born and raised on the West Road of Haileybury on a farm he lovingly referred to as “the old town line.” He joined the army at the age of 19 and served with the Black Watch Regiment in Korea and Oakville. He and his wife Fran lived outside Cobalt for many years and moved to Gilles (Coleman Township) where they have resided for the past 27 years. Mr. Evans worked for the railroad, as a miner, the pipeline and for the latter part of his life for the Township of Coleman as a heavy equipment operator. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed woodworking whereby he created many cribbage boards and beautiful keepsake boxes, though his greatest love was that of his music. He also loved visiting with family and friends and so enjoyed playing cribbage, especially when he won. He is survived by his wife Fran; children Lloyd (wife Danielle) Evans of Sudbury, Chris (wife Anita) Evans of Angus, Tami (husband Derrick) Buffam of Haileybury, Kevin (wife Trudy) Evans of Lorraine Valley and John (wife Lori-Ann) Evans of Bass Lake; grandchildren Jason and Morgan Evans, Holly and Shane Evans, Tyler and Megan Buffam, Emily, Elisia and Ethan Evans, Jacob and Jarryd Evans; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Zella and Harvey; brothers Edward and Elmore Evans; sisters Ida Evans, Eveline Follick and Phyllis Morin; nephews Norman and Gordon Evans; and beloved niece Brenda Plaunt-Brunet. The Evans family received friends and family at the Buffam Leveille Funeral Home in Haileybury on January 19, 2005 where a memorial service was held by members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 54 with Piper Dave Robson and Warren Cambridge conducting the service for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. A luncheon followed in Haileybury at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, catered by the Relief Society of the church. Contributions to the Canadian Lung Association, the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind are gratefully acknowledged by the family.

After a short battle with cancer, Marcel Verstraetan of South River died February 4, 2005 at the North Bay General Hospital-Scollard Site. He was in his sixty-seventh year. Mr. Verstraetan is survived by his beloved wife and best friend Ginny; mother Blanche Matthynssens of Courtland; children Dan Verstraeten (Liz) of Claremont, Marc Verstraeten (Liz Ross) of Otterville, Bonnie Gagnon (Billy) of Essex and Tammy Godden (Roger Leveille) of Thornloe; grandchildren Ashley, Kevin, Emma, Ty, Jennifer, Bill, Kristelle, Brittney and Matthew; sisters Diana Ghesquiere (Noel) and Anita Hillner (David), both of Tillsonburg; and special brothers- and sisters-in-law and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his father Roger Verstraetan and stepfather Albert Matthynssens. The funeral service was conducted by Reverend Paul Snow at Moore’s Funeral Chapel in Sundridge on February 8. Yvette Rivard (Perron) of Earlton died January 21, 2005 at the Englehart and District Hospital. She was born in Earlton on January 10, 1923 to Télesphore and Régina (Labrèche) Perron. A member of St. Jean-Baptiste Parish, Mrs. Rivard is survived by Gisèle of Montreal, Nicole of Earlton, Jean-Maurice (Nicole Filiatrault) of Gatineau, Martial (Sylvie Pineault) of Ville Marie; grandchildren Mathieu, Olivier, Jessie-Anne and Janick; sisters Rollande Huppé, Jeannette Guilbeault, Thérèse Gauthier and Cécile Garand; brothers Fernand (Gabrielle) and Lucien (Jeanne-d’Arc), all of Earlton; sister Gilberte Guilbeault of Sorel; brother Marcel (Norma) of Timmins; and sister-in-law Carmen Rivard of Earlton. She was predeceased by her husband Albert, son Maurice, brothers Gérard and Maurice and many brothers- and sisters-in-law. The funeral was arranged by McDonald Funeral Home in Englehart with the service conducted by Father Gilles Leblanc at Église St. Jean-Baptiste in Earlton on January 29. Wilma Adriana Overdijk of RR#1 New Liskeard died suddenly at home on January 27, 2005. She was born in the Netherlands on December 13, 1926. She received her education in Naarden, Netherlands and on November 1, 1958 married John Overdijk in Trenton, Ontario. She moved north to this area from Wiarton in 1967. Mrs. Overdijk was a seamstress and homemaker. A dedicated wife to John and mother to her sons Herman and Norman, her passions were clothes-making and music. Mrs. Overdijk enjoyed being an organist in the Cobalt United Church for seven years and was a faithful member of the Haileybury Pentecostal Assembly for 34 years. She was a real Proverbs 31 woman who loved the Lord, Jesus Christ passionately and has now gone to be with Him in heaven. We thank our Lord for the opportunity to have her as a part of our lives and look forward to meeting her again one day. Mrs. Overdijk is survived by eight brothers and sisters; her husband John; sons Herman and Norman; and eight grandchildren. The funeral was arranged by Perrin Funeral Chapel in New Liskeard with the service conducted at the Haileybury Pentecostal Assembly by Reverend Dan Thompson on February 1. The burial will be in Trenton.

Merlin Henry Black of Englehart died January 31, 2005 at the Englehart and District Hospital. He was born in Earlton on August 16, 1919 to John and Jane Black. Educated in Englehart, he married Jean Gibson in Kirkland Lake on November 8, 1940 and worked for Ontario Northland Railroad. Mr. Black is survived by his wife Jean; sons Dalton (Claudette) and Rodney (Sharon); daughter Merrlyn (Bill Morris); grandchildren Deana and Kelly Black, Julie Sonnen (Chris), Martin Morris, Connie Black (Anna), Stephanie and Micheal Black; and great-granddaughters Luna Black and Emma Sonnen. The funeral was arranged by McDonald Funeral Home in Englehart. The service was conducted February 3 at McDonald Funeral Home by his nephews Stan Ferguson, Philip Potter and Glen Pratt. Haileybury resident Madeleine Hermiston died suddenly on February 8, 2005 at the Temiskaming Hospital. She was born in Blenheim, Ontario, on April 15, 1934 to Thomas and Minnie Smith. She married Edward Hermiston in Blenheim on September 25, 1953 and in 1955 moved with her husband to Uno Park from Chatham. Mrs. Hermiston was a wife and mother who enjoyed playing cards, knitting, doing puzzles and gardening. Since moving to Island View Apartments in Haileybury five years ago, she volunteered at Extendicare and ran a fitness program at the apartment building. Mrs. Hermiston was predeceased by her husband on November 15, 1987; parents Thomas and Minnie Smith; parents-in-law Lois and George Hermiston. She is survived by her daughters Shirley (Lorry Belanger), Lorna (Andy Moreau), Betty (Wayne Robinson) and Mandy (Jody Lamoureux); sons Edward (Debbie) Hermiston and Tom Hermiston; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She will be sadly missed by family, friends and tenants at Island View Apartments. The funeral was arranged by Perrin Funeral Chapel in New Liskeard with the service conducted by Kitty Miller. Pallbearers were Armand Belanger, Martin Belanger, Jeff Belanger, Dustin Hermiston, Darren Davis and Wayne Robinson. Burial is in the spring at the Harley Cemetery. Dennis Mortson of Englehart died at the Englehart and District Hospital on February 17, 2005. He had been ill with cancer for three months. Mr. Mortson was born to Irene Armstrong and Malcolm Mortson in Arntfield, Quebec, on October 22, 1937. Educated at Kirkland Lake Collegiate and Vocational Institute, he also received his accounting designation through correspondence. He moved to Englehart from North Bay in 1956 and on May 30, 1959 married Sylvia Woollings in Englehart. Mr. Mortson worked as a comptroller for Cleveland Cliff’s Iron Ore Company and with Ontario Mines (Adams and Sherman Mines). Mr. Mortson was the Mayor of Englehart whose extensive community involvement included belonging to over 40 local organizations. He was always available to fill in at various churches for anyone at anytime. Mr. Mortson is survived by his wife Sylvia; daughter Stacey Mortson (Montminy), Rob Montminy, Mitchell, Steven; daughter Andrea (Mortson) Zabudsky, Jon Zabudsky, Samantha, Sarah, Joshua; sister Judy Mortson and brother Vern Mortson. He was predeceased by his brother Keke, mother Audrey and sister Heather Mortson. The funeral was arranged by McDonald Funeral Home in Englehart with the service conducted at the Community Hall on February 20 by Reverend Peter Dahlin. Pallbearers were Mitchell Montminy, Steven Montminy, Glenn Milton, Sean Wyatt, Greg Woollings and Brad Woollings. Over 300 people attended the service with friends and family from out of town coming from Nova Scotia, West Virginia, Oshawa, Sudbury, Toronto, Hamilton, North Bay, New Liskeard, Kirkland Lake and Timmins. After a very courageous 19 month battle with brain cancer, Diane Maille died very peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, at the Englehart and District Hospital on February 9, 2005. She was in her fifty-third year. She was born on February 28, 1951 and received her education in Earlton and Haileybury. She continued her studies in Ottawa and pursued a career in Medical Records and Archives. She had been living away from this area since then. Ms. Maille will be fondly remembered for her joie de vivre and infectious sense of humour and laughter, as well as her incredible strength and determination. She was lovingly devoted to her family and friends and very dedicated to her work as a Health Information Manager which gave her numerous opportunities to travel and work in middle eastern countries for a good part of her career. Ms. Maille was predeceased by her father Maurice Maille in 1997. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her mother Bernadette Maille of Earlton; sisters Monique Neubert of Cambridge, Jocelyne Maille of New Liskeard, and brother Richard Maille of London; nieces and nephew Audrey of Windsor, Lynne of Toronto, Anne-Marie of New Liskeard, Crystal and Ryan of London; and many relatives, friends, acquaintances and co-workers. The funeral was arranged by Perrin Funeral Chapel in New Liskeard. The family thanks Anny St. Jean for her personal attention. Cremation has occurred and a memorial service was held February 15. The service was conducted by Pere Gilles Leblanc at Eglise St. Jean Baptiste in Earlton. Relatives and friends attending the service came from Sault Ste. Marie, North Bay, Toronto, Windsor, London, Cambridge, Rouyn Noranda, Kapuskasing, Levack, Chelmsford, Guigues and the Tri-Towns. The family wishes to thank Dr. Primrose and the nursing staff at the Englehart and District Hospital for the very attentive and excellent care Ms. Maille received. They also thanked the ladies of UCFO who prepared and served the luncheon after the service, Pere Gilles Leblanc for his thoughtfulness and Maurice Leveille for all his help. They also expressed their deepest gratitude for the support, concern and kind words of all those who have been there for them and Ms. Maille during this most difficult time. Northview Nursing Home resident William Alexander Harkness died February 23, 2005 at Northview. He was born in Englehart on March 6, 1916 to Agnes and Alex Harkness. Educated at Englehart Public and High Schools, he married Audrey Kiehna in Brentha on June 18, 1940. From 1942-44 he served with the Royal Canadian Air Force. Mr. Harkness was employed for 35 years with Ontario Northland Railway. He was the former chairman of the public school board, past president of the Englehart Legion, member and elder of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church and a former member of the Northland Pioneer Club. Mr. Harkness is survived by his wife Audrey; children Marilyn (Doug Wheeldon), Alex (Sharon) Harkness, Agnes (Mike Lacharity) and Andy (Tammy) Harkness; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sisters Jean, Margaret and Isobel. The funeral was arranged by McDonald Funeral Home in Englehart with the service conducted by Drew Jacques on February 26. Pallbearers were grandsons Curtis and Scott Wheeldon, Kevin Harkness, Luke, Michael and Andy Lacharity. Burial will be at the Englehart Cemetery. On February 20, 2005 Annie Barns Anderson (nee Coyle) (Nancy) Brown died at the Temiskaming Hospital, surrounded by family. She was born July 6, 1924 to Euphemia and Edward Coyle in Leith, Scotland. Educated in Scotland, she worked in factories until the time she married George Alfred Brown on February 10, 1945 in Edinburgh. Moving to a farm on the outskirts of Earlton in March 1946 was a hard move for her to make, coming from a city and so far away from her family. Mrs. Brown was a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a friend. She loved to make all of her own and her family’s clothing and she was an avid knitter, baker and seamstress. She was also a member of the Daughters of Scotland for many years. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Mrs. Brown was predeceased by her husband in 1997, father in 1951 and her mother in 1974, brother Robert and sisters May and Margaret Rose. She is survived by her children Sandra (Jeff Decoste), Thomas and Valerie (Dave Whiting) all of the Toronto area, John (wife Margaret) of Haileybury, Judy (Bruce Tomlin) of Belle Vallee and Cindy (Joe Albert) of Courtenay, British Columbia; grandchildren Nancy, Richard, Terry, Donna, Tina, Julie, Natasha, Craig, David, Kyle, Kathryn, Nadine, Thomas and Jody; great-grandchildren Diedra, Nicholas, Matthew, Paul, Austin, Katelyn, Sara, Andre and Jeremy; sister Euphemia Todd of Northumberland, England; brothers Thomas (Ellen) and John (Mary), both of Edinburgh; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was the last of her husband’s generation of Browns. The funeral was arranged by Buffam Léveillé Funeral Home in Haileybury. The service was conducted by Reverend Wally Wood at St. Andrew’s United Church in Haileybury on February 23. Pallbearers were grandsons Craig, David and Kyle Brown of Haileybury, Thomas Brown of Toronto, granddaughter Julie Williams and husband Brad of Cobalt. Family and friends from Toronto, B.C. and the surrounding area attended the service. “Rest in peace Mom, you are now in God’s garden and he only takes the best.”

Haileybury resident Marcel Savoie died February 22, 2005 at his home. He was born on April 16, 1937 to Napoléon Savoie and Lédia Beauséjour. On April 20, 1963 he married Priscille Girard in Haileybury and worked for N. Morrisette Diamond Drilling/Boart Longyear. He loved his family and friends unconditionally, loved fishing and gardening and creating interesting gadgets. He was a devoted father and husband. Mr. Savoie was predeceased by his parents Napoléon and Lédia Savoie, sisters Jeanne and Yvette, brothers Jean-Paul, Roland and Emile and stepfather Narcisse Labarge. He is survived by his wife Priscille; children Julie, Marc (Linda Van Hoye), Josée (Robert Gauthier), Rachelle (Sylvain Plante); grandchildren Jeffrey, Jennifer, Dominique, Norman, Lindsay, Donald and Kenny; siblings Lucien, Roger, Léo, Rhéal and Thérèse; and many nephews and nieces. The funeral was arranged by Buffam Léveillé Funeral Home in Haileybury with the service conducted at Holy Cross Parish by Father Germain Turcotte on February 26. On March 4, 2005 Arnold Lyons of Northview Nursing Home died in Englehart. Mr. Lyons was born in Frontenac County, Kingston area on September 6, 1922 to Noah and Florence Lyons and moved to this area in 1936 from Owen Sound. Mr. Lyons worked as a pulp wood cutter, a farmer, worked in the summer for the Ontario Northland building and bridge department and for the Township of Chamberlain in the roads department. Mr. Lyons loved hockey and was a Leafs fan. He also liked playing cribbage and to hunt and fish. Survived by his sisters Violet in Vancouver and Jean in North Bay, he was predeceased by relatives Donald in 1998, Ethel in January of 2005, Isabelle in 1999 and Gladys in January, 2005. The funeral was arranged by McDonald Funeral Home in Englehart where the service was conducted March 7 by Peter Dahlin. Cremation has occurred. Relatives and friends from out of town attending the service came from Cambridge and North Bay. Cecil Clinton Charlton of Englehart died suddenly at the Temiskaming Hospital on February 21, 2005. Mr. Charlton was born in Brentha Township on January 30, 1915 to Fred and Frances Ellen (Nickerson) Charlton. Educated at Brentha School, he married Merrill Emerson in Englehart on May 3, 1939. He farmed in Dack Township all his life, raising his family of 10 children. He was also a foster parent to a number of children. Mr. Charlton enjoyed reading, television and family gatherings. His favourite pastime was spending numerous hours on his bulldozer — his life was his farm. Mr. Charlton is survived by his wife of 65 years, Merrill; children Josephine (Bruce Cutting), Victor (Nancy), Bonita (Garnet Williams), Maureen (Ken Collum), Margaret (Martin Kilsdonk), Kevin (Janey Remus), Sylvia (Skip Williams), Kathy (Art Smith), Cindy (Dan Leroux), Sandy (Sherry McNaughton) and Ruth Ann; sister Ethel Edwards; 27 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Myrtle, son Elgin and parents Fred and Frances Charlton. The funeral was arranged by McDonald Funeral Home in Englehart with the service conducted February 25 at Good Shepherd Church by Pastor Dave Murphy. The pallbearers were nephews Doug Edwards, Gordon Edwards, friends Roy Byerlay, Bill Carruthers Jr., Dieter Hynds and Wayne Hewitt. Burial will be in the early spring at Brentha Cemetery. Friends and relatives attending the service from out of town came from Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and the surrounding area. In memory contributions were made to services for physically-disabled children and the Salvation Army.

On March 2, 2005 Marion Ruth Murphy of New Liskeard died at the Temiskaming Hospital. She had been ill for several months after having not recovered from surgery at the Civic Hospital in North Bay. She was born in Niagara Falls, New York, on May 19, 1927 to Dewey Kennedy and Jose May McIntosh. Educated in Niagara Falls, she moved to New Liskeard in 1946 and married Ira J. Murphy at St. John’s Anglican Church on November 17, 1947. Mrs. Murphy worked as a secretary at George Taylor Hardware, Hill Clark and Francis, Rexwood, N.O.D., 3-H and Helmet Moeltner Company. Mrs. Murphy was a member of St. John’s. She moved to the Twin Lakes area in 1972 and loved wildlife and loved her family, her home life and her computer at her home at Fairy Lake. Mrs. Murphy is survived by her husband Ira; daughter Rosalynn (husband Canon David Williams) and granddaughters Sarah, Sorcha and Jocelyn, all in Ireland; sister-in-law Chris Murphy and many close cousins, nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her mother and father, grandparents, Peter and Carrie McIntosh. The funeral was arranged by Perrin Funeral Chapel in New Liskeard with the service conducted by Reverend Linda and Richard White at St. John’s Anglican Church. Pallbearers were nieces and nephews Kelly and Nichole Murphy, Pat Murphy, Dean Murphy, Maurice and Bonney Desjardins. Burial is in the spring at the New Liskeard Cemetery. Relatives and friends attending the service from out of town came from North Bay, Thunder Bay and Kirkland Lake. The family thanked Linda and Richard White for their personal and helpful dignity in conducting the service, Perrin Funeral Chapel for their helpful and efficient conducting of the funeral.
