MacMILLAN Duncan (Mikey) 1927 - 2006 It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Duncan (Mikey) MacMillan at his home on Thursday, October 5, 2006 at the age of 79 years. Mikey is survived by his sister, Margaret Barter of Montreal, QC; and brother-in-law, Murdo McLeod. He will also be greatly missed by two nieces, Mary Lagace and her partner Peter, and Maggie Eakin and her partner Dale; great-nieces, Laura and Deanna Kiebke; dear friend, buddy and nephew Murdo Duncan; close church friends, Don and Arlen Young and Alf and Terry Zimmer; good friends and neighbours, Mary, Jerry and Stanley Gliwinski; and his beloved dog, Misty. He was predeceased by a sister, Christina McLeod; and parents, Duncan and Mary Jane MacMillan. Duncan was a native Calgarian, living his entire life in the family home. Engaged by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources in 1946, he rose to the position of Mining Recorder, Calgary Office of the Ministry, managing all Alberta Crown Land, from the International Border north to Ponoka, AB, retiring in 1985. Duncan was an elder of the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. He became an Assistant Treasurer of the Sunday School at age sixteen, and later became Treasurer of the Sunday School in 1949, serving until 1994. OPPL Helga 1940 - 2006 Helga Oppl passed away unexpectedly on October 5, 2006 at her home in Calgary. She was born to Franz and Anna Hoehn in Schweinfurt, Germany on 28 September 1940. After marrying Herbert Oppl in 1960 they immigrated to Canada in 1963, settling in Calgary, Alberta. Helga was devoted to Herbert and she had a strong sense of family values and loyalty, caring deeply for her friends and staff and making everyone's life richer for having known her. Friendly and vivacious to the end, with a sparkling sense of humour, fun and adventure, she helped develop the family business, Bavarian Machine Works, later becoming President. Helga was predeceased by Herbert and her parents, and is survived by her son Stephen Oppl in Calgary, her sister Erika Stahl, Birgit and Werner Gossman and extended family in Germany and many friends on both sides of the Atlantic. She will be missed more than can be expressed and the sorrow felt upon her passing is immeasurable. STREET Mary Diane Mary Diane Street passed away suddenly on Monday, October 9, 2006 at the Foothills Hospital at the age of 74. Diane is survived by her loving husband Dr. George Wesley Street; her sons, Glenn (Peggy), and David (Sarah); and her daughter Wendy (Vern) Wadey. She also leaves to mourn, her beautiful grandchildren, Kelsey, Lauren, Keegan, Charlize and Julia. She is also survived by her siblings, Marilyn, Shirley and Pat. She was predeceased by her son Cameron and her siblings, Jean and Alan. Diane was in the first graduating class of dental hygienists in Canada. She was an extremely generous, selfless, and thoughtful person who dedicated herself to helping others. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy. WATSON Freda Freda passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, October 8, 2006 at the age of 77 years. She worked as a hairdresser for many years from her home in Calgary. WATSON Nelson Clinton Stuart 1916 - 2006 Nelson Clinton Stuart Watson, beloved husband of sixty-seven years of Minnie of Cochrane, passed away on Tuesday, October 10, 2006 at the age of 90 years. Nelson enjoyed painting cartoon characters, woodworking, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a devoted husband and father and a proud tradesman. Nelson was a volunteer firefighter in Redwood Meadows, and a member of the Redwood Meadows and Springbank Seniors Centres. He resided at the Bethany Care Centre in Cochrane for the last two-and-a-half years. Besides his loving wife, Nelson is survived by his children, Wayne and Cheri Watson of Camrose, AB, Sharon Barrette of Windsor, ON, and Bruce and Brenda Watson of Springbank, AB; as well as eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Nelson was predeceased by his son-in-law Richard Barrette. CHARLTON, John William M. M. - John died peacefully on September 27th, 2006 at Royal Victoria Hospital, Barrie. For 50 years he was the devoted, dearly loved husband of Jean (nee Patterson) of Sandy Cove Acres, Innisfil. He is also survived by sister Amelia Matthew and her family of England. John came to Ontario after service as a Sergeant in the 4/7th Dragoon Guards. He was a veteran of Dunkirk and of D. Day and was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in Normandy. John worked for the North York Board of Education on the Maintenance staff. He owned Charlton Dominion Hardware in Dundalk. Coming to S.C.A. from Aurora in 1979 he was active in many areas in the Park. John was a wonderful husband, a Mason and a true friend. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements entrusted to the PAUL F. OBITUARY Nellie Annie MARION DAVIS (nee ELLINS) We are trav'ling in the footsteps, Of those who've gone before, And we'll all be reunited, On a new and sunlit shore - Lord, how I want to be in that number When the saints go marching in. On October 5, 2006 Marion reunited with her cherished husband Dean, son Terry and granddaughter Laurie. Marion was just 8 days shy of her 97th birthday. She was born in London, England immigrating to Montreal with her family (Helen & Harry Ellins and brother Bert) when she was 3. She married the love of her life, Dean Taylor Davis. They adopted Terry and then Dean to complete their family. Marion served her community with volunteer work at the Catherine Booth Hospital. She tirelessly crocheted crafted Christmas gifts for the Fall bazaar every year. In 1969 she became a Canadian Citizen and at age 82 she moved to Vancouver. Since 1997 she lived at Chalmers Lodge in Vancouver - loving the care & social scene they provided while respecting her need to be independent. So many summers spent at the Lake Louisa cottage in the Laurentians, vacations abroad with friends, a game of bridge or Shanghai (May I buy that?), dinners with family or tea with friends provide fabulous memories of Marion's wit and laughter. She especially loved visits from her widespread family; Son Dean (Marcia) Diablo CA; Daughter-In-Law Janet, Vancouver; Niece Janet, Toronto; Grandchildren Susan (Dan) Surrey, Ian (Sheri) Squamish, Heather (Bill) Orono ON, Carolyn (Frank) Louisville KY, Bill (Gigi) St Jose CA; and Great-Grandchildren Dirk, Rachel (Sean), Harrison, Gareth, Nigel, Aiden, Teri-Rose, Billy, Gus, Keith, Joe, Hudson, Laura, Sabrina & Elise. OBITUARY RACHEL TROKENBERG (nee BIEGUN) Passed away on Tuesday, October 10, 2006, in her ninetieth year of Pneumonia at the Jewish General Hospital. Rachel Trokenberg was born in Poland, the youngest of 5 children, whose father died in the First World War when she was only five. She showed an early aptitude for languages and studied linguistics. She was fluent in eight languages. Before World War II her linguistic ability and business acumen secured her an important position in the import/export industry. In Canada, Rachel Trokenberg was involved in a number of retail and real estate ventures. She was a very bright, energetic and dynamic person who also devoted much of her time and energies in caring for her family and friends. She was the main caregiver of Samuel Trokenberg, her husband for sixty-two years, who had suffered a stroke eleven years prior to his death. BATT, Jessie Amelia Harding Age 92, October 8, 2006 Peacefully on a sunny fall morning with son Bob and granddaughters Natasha and Chantal by her side. Born April 6, 1914, at Amherst Point, Nova Scotia, to William Harding and Margaret Wood. Younger sister of Helen and John Harding (both deceased). Educated at Acadia (B.A. 1936) and Columbia (M.A. 1941) Universities. Married Robert John Batt (d. 1976), and beloved mother of Bob, Sharon, Paula and Sylvia (d. June 2006). Much loved grandmother (Granny) of Chantal, Samantha, Natasha, Sandy, Jessie and Nicky; Aunt to Jess, Dunn, Rorry, Keith and Bruce Harding, and Jeannie (Stewart), Fred and John Batt of Halifax. Jessie is much admired for living a rich and full life, always positive and inspiring many with her determination, energetic character and quick wit. A friend to many, especially in Prince Edward County where she lived out her retirement years as a very active member of the community. Jessie loved exercise, swimming 30 lengths a day until the age of 87. She was also a member of the Picton horticultural and rug-hooking clubs. For the past few years, she participated in day-away activities at the Glebe Seniors' Centre. Thank you to the staff at Billings Lodge where Jessie lived since 2001. CRANHAM, Colin J.G. Retired Huyck Canada Colin Cranham passed away on Saturday, October 7, 2006 in Arnprior Hospital, he was predeceased by his daughter Wendy, his parents Albert and Lillian Cranham and his sister Joan Welsh. He leaves his loving wife Melissa; his daughter Karen Cranham of Denver, Colorado; his son Scott Cranham and partner Mark Daniher of Calgary, Alberta; his son Dr. John Cranham and daughter-in-law Kimberly of Chesapeake, Virginia; his stepdaughter Katharine Miller and Robert Schoonover of Brewster, New York and stepson Thomas Jensen of Newport Beach, California. He also leaves 5 grandchildren and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Colin was a great lover of all sports and instilled the desire to succeed in his children. He was an avid golfer and member of The Arnprior Golf Club. ROOS, Thomas John Inspector Ottawa Police Dept. (ret.) WWII Veteran October 12, 1921 - October 9, 2006 Peacefully with his family by his side, at 84 years of age. Devoted husband of 60 years to the late Mary Cecilia (nee McDonald) and loving father to Thomas (Sharon) of Ottawa, Valerie Roos Webster (John) of Burnstown, ON and Eric (Karen) of L'Ange-Gardien, QC. Beloved grandfather of Thomas (Laura Vidalis), Heather (Darin Wiebe), Laura Hildebrandt, Derek (Krystine) and Tanya. Great grandfather of Thomas, Mitchell, Kaitlyn, Teagan, Josh and Alyssa. Survived by siblings Margery and James of Ottawa. Predeceased by his parents Laura (nee French) and Thomas Roos and by his brother Sidney. Tom grew up at Blanche, Quebec. When he was a boy he worked as a hunting and fishing guide at his parent's lodge. He joined the army, 5th Armoured Division, and served overseas from 1939 to 1945. He participated in the Italian Campaign and in the Liberation of Holland. After returning home (and marrying Mary after a whirlwind 9-day courtship), he joined the Ottawa Police Department. He rose to the position of Inspector and retired after a 35 year career. Tom will be remembered for his strength of character, his good advice and his great stories. RYAN, Hubert James Monday, October 9, 2006, at the Civic Hospital, in Ottawa, after a short illness, Hubert James Ryan passed away at the age of 69. He leaves his spouse and best friend Bernadette (Daigle) and son, Thomas (Shoshanah Deaton) of Ottawa and two brothers, Wilfred (Jeannette Jean) of Sudbury and Barry of Ottawa. Born in Riceville, Ontario, in 1937, Hubert graduated from Carleton University. He had a very successful career with Indian and Northern Affairs Canada where he served for 35 years. He held various positions within that Department namely: Chief, Land Registry and Research Division, Entitlements; Chief, Property and Estate Management; Director of Lands, Revenues and Trusts; Chief, Land Entitlement Division and Registrar of Indian Lands Revenues and Trusts. He held various positions as a negotiator for Native Claims and was a federal negotiator on several files He was a dedicated, hard-working employee who had an unparalleled knowledge of the history of Indian Land administration and the complex legal and political issues surrounding them. To this excellent knowledge, Hubert combined sensitivity to the Indian viewpoint which earned him the trust of the various Indian Bands in Canada. He was a generous and kind man who will be sorely missed by his family, his former colleagues, and his many friends. SCOTT, Ian Gilmour On Tuesday, October 10, 2006 at home in Toronto. Born on the 13th of July 1934 in Ottawa. Son of the late Audrey Gilmour and Cuthbert Scott; survived by his brothers David, Brian and Christopher Scott and his sisters Nancy Colton and Martha Scott, all of Ottawa, and by 15 nephews and nieces: Blair, Tony, Sheila and Sandy Scott (David and Alison Scott); Andrew and Mark Hamlin (Nancy Colton); Ben, Matthew, Joshua and Katie Scott (Brian Scott and Monica Sapiano); James, Will and Ian Murphy (Martha Scott and Brian Murphy), Aidan and Leah Scott (Christopher Scott and Sharon Hill). Ian graduated from St. Michael's College at the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall Law School. He practised law for 35 years with the firm of Cameron, Brewin & Scott and Gowlings. He was the member of the Provincial Legislature for the riding of St. David from 1985 to 1992 and the Attorney General of Ontario from 1985 to 1990. In 1994, Ian suffered a debilitating stroke which he confronted with courage and determination. For a period of 12 years thereafter, until his death, he thrived on the inexhaustible support of his family and his wide circle of friends and former colleagues. He was predeceased by his partner Kim Yakabuski and was supported to the end by his devoted housekeeper Librandina de Sousa. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Michael's Cathedral, 200 Church Street, (corner of Shuter and Bond Streets) Toronto, on Friday, October 13 at 10:30 a.m. A private interment to follow. CRÊTE, Florian 1918-2006 De Longueuil, le 8 octobre 2006, à l'âge de 87 ans, est décédé Florian Crête. Il laisse dans le deuil son épouse Lucille Demers, ses deux fils: André (Pierrette), Gilles (Solange); sa fille Louise (Michel), ses petits-fils: Patrice et Michaël; ainsi qu'autres parents et amis. Exposée: LA MAISON DARCHE, 505 BOUL CURÉ-POIRIER OUEST, LONGUEUIL. Une liturgie sera célébrée vendredi le 13 octobre à 11 heures, en la chapelle de notre résidence. La famille recevra les condoléances ce vendredi à compter de 9 heures.
