ZARET, Helene. At home, after a very courageous battle with cancer, on Tuesday, October 5, 2004. Predeceased by her dear husband Sam. Loving mother of Mark (Simmy) and Neil (Debi). Cherished Bubbi of Josh, Adam, Sam and Zack. Dear sister of Laz, Saul and Willy Newman. She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by many family members and friends. Shirley Francis Martin - March 08, 1927 - May 01, 2004 - 77, Halifax, passed away Saturday morning, May 1, 2004, in QEII Health Sciences Centre, surrounded by her family. Born in Windsor, she was a daughter of the late George and Francis (Perks) Smith. She is survived by her son, Stephen (Jean) Martin, Lower Sackville; daughters, Linda (Bryan) Roe, Halifax; Nancy MacDougall, New Minas; granddaughters, Jennifer Roe (Thomas), Lantz; Julie Roe, Timberlea; Natalie and Jan MacDougall, New Minas; great-granddaughter, Madison MacDougall, New Minas; sisters, Mabel McDonnell, Windsor; Ruth Redden, Windsor; Marie Evans, Halifax. She was predeceased by her husband, George Francis Martin; brothers, Russell, Roy, Earl and Ralph; sisters, Blanche Mullins, Verna Fredericks, Pearl Collins, Edith Naugle and Elizabeth Lake; granddaughter, Tracey MacDougall. Shirley worked for many years at the Post Office located in Fader's Pharmacy on Coburg Road, Halifax, where she was well-known to many patrons. She was an avid bowler and for many years bowled at Fairlanes Bowling Alley, Halifax Shopping Centre, in "The Tuesday's Seniors League." She was a resident of Sir John Thompson Manor. A great joy in her life was her great-granddaughter, Madison. A generous, dedicated, loving mother and grandmother, she will be sadly missed by her family. Miss Phyllis Eva Manzer - October 21, 1913 - May 15, 2004 - Passed away Saturday, May 15, 2004. Phyllis was born October 21, 1913 in Silverdale, BC and moved to Duncan in 1929. Having said good bye to her family she left this world surrounded by her best friends. She chose to leave us in a manner that befits her life, “On her own damn time and in her own way”. A fighter all her life she left with no doubt as to who was in control and of course how much she loved us all. She leaves behind a legacy of love and loyality to the Duncan community. A member of the Kings Daughters, the Candy Stripers at CVDH, the International Order of Foresters and of course the Duncan Bowling Lanes which was her second home. Her sister, Marjorie Doney, nephew, Lee Doney both of Duncan, and niece, Deb Davidson would like to thank the community for the outpouring of concern and warmth particularly the staff of the Cowichan District Hospital. A special thank you goes to all of Phyllis’ friends and members of her beloved bowling team, all of whom she lovingly referred to as her “girls”. Her girls never left her side. Mrs. Doris Agnes Moore (née Gardner) - April 15, 1916 - May 18, 2004 - Mom went to be with the angels in the early hours of May 18, 2004. Mom was born near Davidson, Sask. In 1932 Mom moved to Cobble Hill with her parents Tom and Jessie Gardner. She worked for the solarium for awhile. In 1935 she married our Dad in the Mill Bay United Church. They lived briefly in Port Alberni before returning to the Cowichan Valley where they raised their family of five daughters. Mom was predeceased by our Dad, Vincent Brookbank in 1983, her second husband Thomas Moore in 1994 and beloved daughter Pat Cooper in 2002. Mom leaves to mourn her daughters: Arlene Mawbey (Keith), Duncan, BC, Amy Watson (Carl), Chase, BC, Gail Carson, Duncan, BC and Susan Brookbank, Crofton, BC. Also left to mourn are her son-in-law Delbert Cooper, Prince George, BC, 19 grandchildren, 6 step grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren, numerous other relatives and many dear friends. A Celebration of Mom’s life will take place on Saturday, May 22, 2004 at 3:00 pm at the Mawbey residence, 5150 Langtry Road. The family wishes to thank the staff at Waldon House and the Cowichan Lodge for the wonderful care they have given to our Mom. Also many thanks to the Hospice Society. Marilyn Dawn Mathewson (née Mercier) - March 19, 1968 - May 26, 2004 - It is with sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, daughter and sister Marilyn Dawn Mercier Davis Mathewson at age 36, with her family by her side. Born in Perth-Andover, Curtis on January 27, 1948 and Dale on November 30, 1954, they were the sons of the late Perry and Evelyn (McCarthy) Hitchcock. They are survived by sisters Marina Markey of British Columbia, Gail Johnson of Caribou, Maine, brother Donald (Laury) Hitchcock of Kingston, ON. Laurie Joseph McKay - After a brief illness, the family is saddened to announce the passing of Laurie Joseph McKay at the Health Sciences Centre on Friday May 28, 2004 at the age of 70 years. He leaves to cherish his beautiful memory his wife Agnes, children; Clarina, Sandra, Lenny, Olivia, Leona, Laurie Jr., Laura and Casey, 43 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and one sister Theresa Everette. Laurie was predeceased by his son Kenny McKay, 1989, father James McKay, 1978 and grandson Frehley McKay 2002. Jennie McMahon (née Steele) - June 19, 1905 - May 29, 2004 - Peacefully on Saturday, May 29, 2004 at Victoria General Hospital, Jennie passed away at the age of 98. Born in Parry Sound, ON on July 19, 1905, she moved to Saskatchewan with her family as a child. She married Orville McMahon in Winnipeg on March 17, 1925. They farmed in Roland, MB area before moving to Winnipeg in 1939. Jennie was a long-time member of Grey Street United Church and enjoyed many activities with the Senior's Group. She also enjoyed making quilts, needlepoint and gardening. She was predeceased by her husband Orville in 1972; daughter Dorothy, 1996; son Barnet, 1996; and daughter Elizabeth (Elsie) in 2003. Jennie is survived by sons James (Betty) of Winnipeg, Don of Salt Springs Island, BC, and Gordon of Edmonton, AB; eleven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. A special thank you to the staff at Vista Park Lodge Nursing Home and the Victoria General Hospital for their care of and devotion to Jennie. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 3 at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, officiated by Reverend Glen Morrison. We will miss you, Mom and Grandma. Christina "Chrissie" Elizabeth Mennie (née Harper) - September 19, 1914 - May 29, 2004 - Born 19th of September 1914 in Glasgow, Scotland. Died 27th of May, 2004 in Victoria, B.C., suddenly and peacefully. Chrissie was predeceased by her infant son, John (Feb 9, 1943) and her beloved husband, (Jackie) John Geddes Morrison Mennie (Dec 19, 1955). Nana will be forever missed by her daughter Christine Gilbert and grandsons John (Sheri Onushko), Kevin and Scott. With her passion for life, her dedication for her family and her sense of humour, this vibrant Scottish lady was a credit to her homeland. Funeral service will be held in Sands West Shore Chapel, 317 Goldstream Avenue, on Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at 2:00 P.M. Refreshments will follow in the Sands Arbor Reception Center.
