GALLANT, James D. (Jamesie) - The death occurred at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Saturday, June 19, 2004, of Jamesie Gallant, age 67, of Rusticoville, husband of Joan (nee Zimmer), son of the late Douce and Winnifred Gallant. Father of Kim, Tim, Jody (Allan Williams) Jeremy (Myung-Sun) and Krista (Trevor MacNeill); grandfather of Daniel, MacKenzie, Dylan, Megan and Matthew. He is also survived by brothers and sisters Harvey Gauthier (DeLores), Betty MacKenna, Eunice Gallant (Maynard), Wayne (Gloria), Lowell (Susan), Sheila and Nancy. He was predeceased by brother Herbie and brother-in-law Harvey. Resting at the MacNeil Room, Stella Maris Church, North Rustico, for visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Monday, June 21. Funeral Tuesday, June 22, at 10:30 a.m. at Stella Maris Church. Interment in Stella Maris Cemetery. Donations in memory of James D. Gallant to be used to deliver the knockout punch that will see the total removal of the Robinson's Island Causeway which was a lifelong goal and is representative of his commitment to the people of North Rustico and Prince Edward Island, or to the Cancer Society. MACKINNON, John Edmond. Passed away peacefully on June 19, 2004 at age seventy-seven in the Lakeshore Hospital. Beloved husband of the late Mary Park. Survived by his daughters Joan, Barbara (Pat) and Carol (Steve), his grandchildren Valerie (Ross), Laurie, Carolyn and Michelle. He will be missed by many friends and family. Also survived by three siblings, Neil, Joseph and Gloria and predeceased by five sisters: Mary, Florence, Pauline Veronica, Christina and Marie. He was a Local 144 pipefitter and welder. JAMES, Verna Mildred (Hatcher). September 25, 1934 - June 17, 2004. It is with deep sadness that we announce that Verna James passed away Thursday, June 17 at her residence at the Floralies, LaSalle. She lived with great courage and a fierce sense of independence. She loved to have a good laugh and her sense of humour was still with her even though the last few months were very difficult. She truly valued her family and friends. She is survived by her sister Dorothy (Harry) Krys, sister Kathleen Hatcher, niece Diane (Frank) Krys, niece Janet Krys, brother-in-law Glen Mosher (Elenor), aunt Vera Conrad, cousins and friends. At her request she will be laid to rest in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia on Thursday, June 24 beside her mother Cora and sister Beulah. Skinner, Preston SKINNER - William Preston, est décédé paisiblement entouré de sa famille et amis à la maison à Wendover, le dimanche 20 juin 2004, à l'âge de 50 ans. Il était l'époux de Marie Villeneuve; fils adoré de Jean née Gilbride et de feu Roland Skinner. Il laisse ses enfants: Evan (Samantha Donald) et Mikyla et un petit-fils, Ethan. Il laisse également deux frères: Doug (Linda) et Ward (Madge), ainsi qu'une nièce, cinq neveux, Romeo, Madeleine Villeneuve et leurs familles. Preston, reconnu pour sa gentillesse, son amour pour la musique et son sens de l'humour, ne sera jamais oublié. BRUUN, Karl It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father Karl Bruun. Over the course of 2 years he showed tremendous dignity and grace in his determined fight against cancer. A wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend to many, he passed away on Sunday, June 20, 2004 with his family by his side. Dear husband of Rollande Eckford-Crate and predeceased by his first wife, Carole McWilliam (1996). Loving father to Kari Clarke (Norman), Kirsten Watson (Neil) all of Carleton Place and David Bruun of Ottawa. Stepfather of Jeffrey Eckford. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren Katie, Kristian, Liam and Jenna. Predeceased by his parents Bertil and Anniken Bruun. He leaves behind a wonderful legacy of devotion to family and generosity of spirit. His warm smile, sparkling eyes, hearty laughter and the fact that his door was always open to friends and family will be dearly missed by all who knew him. YUHASZ, Rhita O. (Meunier) Rhita Yuhasz, beloved mother of Raymond and Ramona, and daughter of Roland Meunier passed away at the University of Alberta Hospital on June 19, 2004 after a short illness. She leaves to mourn her son, Raymond Yuhasz of San Diego, California; her daughter, Ramona Gaerin and husband Tyler of San Diego; her mother, Mrs. Rolande Lamare Meunier of Red Deer; her beloved aunt, Mrs. Lorette Champagne of Morinville; her sister-in-law, Mrs. Kathleen Kovacs of Red Deer; her brother-in-law, Mr. Floyd Bernard of Winnipeg and two nephews, Dr. Mark Kovacs of Vancouver and Alexander Bernard of Winnipeg. She was predeceased by her husband, John A. Yuhasz in 1971; her sister, Lynne Bernard and nephew, Nicolas in 1990, and her father, Raymond Meunier in 2003. Rhita was born and raised on the farm in Morinville and attended Notre Dame Convent from which she graduated in 1953. She then went on to attend McTavish Business School in Edmonton. In 1955, she met and married John A. Yuhasz of Warburg. They went on to make their home in Red Deer. She went to work for Michener Centre in the accounting department for the next several years while being involved in the Yuhasz/Kovacs ownership of the old Windsor Hotel. Following the death of her husband in 1971, Rhita became employed by the Red Deer Catholic School Board System, where she assisted many principals over the years. One of her greatest joys was seeing all "her kids" grow up, and she loved running into them as adults. She touched many of their lives deeply. She then spent 13 years with Alberta Transportation until her retirement in 1993. Most recently she greatly enjoyed her work with Lenscrafters, which let her encounter and help the many hundreds of people she knew in the central Alberta area. Rhita was a phenomenal single parent and an early pioneer of Single Parent Groups in Red Deer, back in the time when it was not as widely accepted as it is now. She always did the job of two parents and it hurt her deeply when people implied that the family unit needed 2 parents or was not complete. She proved herself by raising 2 small children to adults on her own without much means, and for that she was extremely proud. She loved her two children beyond belief and made them the center of her life. She enjoyed traveling to San Diego for frequent visits where her children enjoyed spoiling her. On her most recent trip for her daughter's wedding, the mother of the bride was simply radiant. Rhita had a life long love of music, was a gifted singer and wonderful alto in many choirs throughout her life. In recent years she was a member of the Tony Connelly Singers and took great joy in singing at events and tirelessly performing at nursing homes in central Alberta. Her handclasp had a feeling of sincere friendship and her infectious smile was contagious. She was always there when needed and never said "No" to a friend. Rhita wrote her name in kindness, love and mercy on the hearts of the hundreds she came in contact with over the years. Her name and deeds will be forever legible in the hearts she leaves behind. OLIVER_Mary Irene Rose (Sister Mary Monica, RNDM) passed away quietly at Santa Maria Home on Monday, June 21, 2004. Born in Sutherland, SK November 24, 1920, Irene was predeceased by her parents Joseph Louis and Virginia (Mongrain) Olivier, her brothers Louis (Jeanne) and Frederick (Wynn) and her sister Theresa (Louis) Beltjens. She is survived by several nieces and nephews and by her Sisters in the Congregation of Our Lady of the Missions. Irene joined the congregation in 1937 after graduating from Sacred Heart Academy in Regina. She subsequently taught in Saskatchewan at St. Andrew's, near Wapella and St. Joseph's in Regina, St. Michael's in Brandon, Manitoba, and the Catholic Schools in Fort Frances, Ontario. Finally in 1968 her missionary dreams were fulfilled and she went to Peru, where she devoted herself to the work of evangelization in each of the three missions of Ilo, Moquegua and Candarave. Everywhere Irene proved herself a diligent and skilful teacher. Her musical and artistic talents were of great use in both classroom and pastoral work, her lovely voice was effective both in leading choirs and in delivering reflections for lay services in the many missions in which she served. (Fifteen in the parish of Candarave). Her kindness was unlimited and her gentle ways smoothed paths for many people. In 1985 ill health forced Sister to return to Canada where she lived and worked in various communities in Regina and then in Fort Frances. The year 1998 saw the community from Fort Frances move to Regina where Irene settled in the Sister's Residence at Santa Maria. In just two years' time Sister's need for nursing care took her "upstairs " at Santa Maria and there she received the loving care of a devoted staff to whom the Sisters and Irene's family are most grateful. We will all miss her welcoming smile and greeting of "Hola! " A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of Santa Maria Senior Citizens Home, 4215 Regina Avenue with Rev. Ken Koep and Rev. Adam Sebastian, OFM, concelebrating. Interment in Riverside Memorial Park. ELSIE (SALLY) L. SHORTREED Elsie (Sally) L. Shortreed, 80, of Watten Township, Ont., passed away at her residence on Tuesday, June 22, 2004. Elsie was born Jan. 16, 1924 in La Vallee, Ont. to the late Frederick and Rosina Tummey. She was united in marriage on Feb. 15, 1941 to Arnold Shortreed. Together, they moved to Toronto, Ont., where Elsie had a lengthy career with the Adams Brands Ltd. gum factory. They moved back to the lakeside in the early 1970s. She enjoyed knitting, entertaining, and was a great cook. Her many pets over the years were well cared for—and a comfort to her. Elsie was predeceased by her husband, Arnold, on May 18, 2001. She also was predeceased by her parents; brothers, Bill and Art; and sister, Doris. She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Berna Shortreed of Fort Frances, Ont., and Ethel Cooke of Port Alberni, B.C.; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Monday, June 28, 2004 at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances. Rev. Marietta Marshall officiated, with interment in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances. BENOITON, Alice (nee Girouard) Alice Benoiton passed away peacefully in her 101st year, at mid-day Saturday, June 19th, 2004 at the Foyer Notre-Dame in Notre Dame de Lourdes, Manitoba. Alice was born October 29, 1903. She was the eldest of a family of ten raised by David Girouard and Emma (Labossiere) in Somerset, Manitoba. In 1997, spouse Benoit J., predeceased her in Montreal, where the family had moved to from Somerset in 1947. Son Rene and late spouse Moira, and grandchildren Danielle (and spouse David) of North Bay, and Gilles-Guy (and spouse Connie) are Edmontonians, while son Leo and spouse Ljuba reside in Ottawa. Daughters Paula, Janet and boy triplets died as babies in Somerset. She is also survived by sister Melba (Patton) of Brandon, and was predeceased by sisters Berthe (Mardon) of Montreal, Dora (Dawe) of Toronto, Liliane of Somerset, Viola (Moreau) of Los Angeles, and brothers Lorenzo, Donald, Orlando and Roland, all of Somerset. Among her memorable moments was the celebration of her 100th birthday last October at the rendezvous in Somerset, where she was greeted by relatives from throughout the continent. SCHOENHERR, Lawrence (Larry) Francis Warrant Officer 1st Class R.C.A.F. Veteran, WWII In hospital after a long struggle with Alzheimers on Sunday, June 20, 2004 in his 90th year. Beloved husband and soulmate for 64 years of Doris (nee Messerschmidt), loved father of Liz Steel (Frank) and Heather Darch. Cherished grandfather of Michael Steel (Sharon Hodder), Todd Steel (Mary), Karen Noseworthy (Andy), Brad Darch (Danielle Dewar) and Lisa Darch (Adam Marshall). Loving great-gramps of Emma, Emily, Jack, Lauren and Amy. Predeceased by his parents Frank and Marion and sisters Millie, Eleanor and Marion. Larry served his country with distinction in WWII. He continued his chosen career in his beloved R.C.A.F. until retirement in 1967. For over 60 years, Lake Dore in the Ottawa Valley was home for Larry and Doris. The "lake" was their special place to share. AuCOIN, Joseph John - 73, LaPrairie, died June 20, 2004, at home. Born in Cheticamp, he was a son of the late Paddée A. John and Rose (Bourgeois) AuCoin. He was a member of St. Peter's Church, Cheticamp. He worked in the Gypsum Mine in Dingwall. He was also a school bus driver for 36 years. Surviving are his wife, Marie Lorette LeBlanc; sons, Joey (Madeleine) AuCoin and Wayne AuCoin, Cheticamp; brother, Arsene Neil (Viola) AuCoin, Halifax; sisters, Marie Victoire (Joe) Mombourquette, New Waterford and Clothilde (Henry) Bourgeois, Petit Etang. The body has been donated to science. A memorial mass will be offered on Monday, June 28, at 10 a.m. in St. Peter's Church, Cheticamp, Father Sylvain Guilbault officiating. Donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. Arrangements are under the direction of Cheticamp Funeral Services Ltd.
