Mr. John LeRoi Betts MILLERTON, NB - The death of Mr. John LeRoi Betts, husband of Annie Betts of Route 108, Millerton, NB, occurred on Monday, March 22, 2004 at the Miramichi Regional Hospital at the age of 71. Born in Millerton he was the son of the late John and Audrey (Simpson) Betts. He was a graduate of UNB Class of '53 (Chemistry), Graduate of the University of Ottawa '85 (Professional Engineering), recipient of the L.H. Weldon Medal in 1970, and he belonged to the Professional Engineers of Ontario and Pulp and Paper Association of Canada. Besides his wife, John is survived by one daughter, Laura (Dave) McConnell of Mississauga, ON; one son, Rev. Deacon Ian Betts of New York City; two brothers, David (Wendy) of Calgary, AB, Donald (Mary) of Ottawa, ON; three grandsons, James, Kevin and Andrew. He is predeceased by one sister, Elizabeth. The family will receive visitors at Bell's Funeral Home, on Wednesday, March 24, 2004 from 7 to 9 pm and on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service will be held from the H. CHAPMAN, DORIS LETITIA Doris Letitia (Henderson) Chapman died March 14, 2003 at home in Cookstown, ON. Doris was born March 23, 1917 in Royal Road, NB. She was the daughter of the late Robert and Ruth Henderson. She was the wife of the late Robert E. Chapman. She is survived by two sons Wesley (Cheryl), Robert and one daughter Ethel (Paul) Wardlaw. She leaves behind her grandchildren Colin, Candice and Amanda Chapman; Jocelyn, Jennifer, Karen Joy and Janessa Wardlaw. COWPER, CLARA MARY At the Carleton Memorial Hospital at Woodstock, NB on March 21, 2004, Clara Mary Cowper of Debec, NB. Born September 15, 1938 to the late Fred and Laura (Porter) Cowper as an only child. Clara is survived by several cousins on both, the Cowper and Porter sides of the family, two aunts, Mary (Elmer) Porter, Joan (Louis) Porter as well as a host of friends. Being an educator by trade she taught for several years at Limestone, NB and for more than thirty years at Woodstock High School and has been retired for several years. She was a very active member of the Woodstock Wesleyan Church as well as many other organizations in both Woodstock and Debec. Resting at the Carleton Funeral Home, 337 Lockhart Mill Road, Jacksonville where friends may call on Tuesday, March 23 from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Services will be held on Wednesday, March 24, at 2:00 p.m. from the Funeral Home with Pastor Dale MacDonald officiating. Outre son épouse, il laisse dans le deuil huit fils: Aldoria (Georgette) d’Edmundston, Sylvain (Julie) et Armand (Annette), tous deux de Rogersville, Louis (Elise) d’Acadieville, Gérard (Yvonne), France (Yolande), Donald (Monique) et Alexandre (Marilla), tous de Colette; trois filles: Eva (Roger), Géraldine (Gérard) et Solange, toutes de Rogersville; trois frères: Eddy, Rosimond et Albert, tous de Rogersville; 24 petits-enfants, 24 arrière-petits-enfants, ainsi que ses beaux-enfants: May (Roméo) de Richibouctou-Village, Éric (Laura), Georges (Cécile), Léo (Ida), Juliette (Alyre), Yves (Cécile) et Claudette (Johnny), tous de Rogersville, Gérard de Saint-Charles, Laurie (Carmelle) de Moncton, Jean-Claude (Bernadette) et Jean Guy (Diane), tous deux de l’Ontario, ainsi que 37 beaux-petits-enfants et 24 arrière-beaux-petits-enfants. MARGARET RENA PITRE (nee GRIEVE) It is with deep sadness and incredible sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Margaret Rena Pitre at Sunnywood Manor Personal Care Home in Pine Falls, on March 21, 2004. Margaret will be lovingly remembered by her husband Marcel Pitre of Pine Falls, MB; her children, Rena Bergman of Riverton, MB, Kristen (Dennis) Waterman and their children, Dylan and Cody of Selkirk, MB, Leah (Denis) Boulet and their children, Annette and David of St-Georges, MB; her sister Joyce (Cliff) Edwards of Las Cruces, New Mexico; brother Larry (Margaret) Grieve of Kingsville, ON: many nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends. She was predeceased by her mother and father; brothers, John, Mac, Gordon; and sisters, Audrey, Edith and Roberta. Marg was born on June 20, 1928 in Shoal Lake, MB, daughter of Stewart and Rena Grieve. Her schooling was taken in the Shoal Lake area, and upon finishing, Marg began working at the Royal Bank. After some years in her hometown, she accepted her first and only transfer, to Pine Falls in 1951. Marcel was asked to meet her at the bus and escort her to the Manitou Lodge where she was to stay. He did, and five years later he escorted her to the alter when they were married August 4, 1956. Marg enjoyed all sports but preferred curling and golf. She was active in the community, volunteering her time in many areas through the years. She loved dancing and was a star at practical jokes. During retirement Marg and Marcel loved to travel by car all over the country, visiting family members and seeing the sites. But most of all, Marg loved to be home with her family, taking special joy in her granddaughter and three grandsons whom she adored. Her kindness and love to her family and friends was unending. This delightful person was always ready to help. Where there could be indifference, Marg would reach out. It is with tremendous appreciation that we wish to express our heartfelt gratitude and thanks for the excellent care given to Mom by Dr. Van Rooyen and the staff of Sunnywood Manor Personal Care Home. We know Mom considered you a part of her extended family and that you will miss those "one liners" as much as we will. Peter Cameron Kelly of Fredericton, NB passed away peacefully on March 22, 2004 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital. Born in St. Vital, MB on May 22, 1912, he was predeceased by his parents John Cowan and Agnes Cameron Kelly; also three brothers Jack, Jimmy and Stewart. He is survived by his wife Peggy Hobbs Kelly; one son Peter and his wife Theresa (Presley). Pete was a professional hockey player in the N.H.L. and A.H.L. from 1935-1942 and was a member of two Stanley Cup Championship teams with the Detroit Red Wings in the 1935-36, 1936-37 seasons. He was a supervisor in the Y.M.C.A. War Services from 1942-46, serving in Canada and England. He was the Athletic Director at U.N.B. from 1947-73 and coached the U.N.B. hockey team for 20 years. He played in numberous golf tournaments both as an amateur and as a professional for many years. Pete was inducted in to the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame in 1978 and in to the Fredericton Sports Wall of Fame in 1992. He was also inducted in to the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame in 1989. Arrangements have been entrusted to Bishop's Funeral Home, 540 Woodstock Road Fredericton, NB. There will be no visitation at the funeral home by request. Following cremation, a private family service will be held in Peoples Cemetery, Charlottetown, PEI, where interment will take place in the family plot. ARTHUR JOSEPH FIOLA March 10, 1923 - March 19, 2004 Arthur Joseph Fiola died peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones, on Friday, March 19, 2004. Left to cherish his memory are his two sons, Maurice (Geri) and Roger (Gisele); four daughters, Lucille Findish (Art), Simone Katsabanis (Sam), Florence Chaput (Maurice) and Lilliane; as well as Jeannette, the mother of his children. Also mourning the loss of their loving grandfather are Paul and Debbie, Charlie, Andre and Danielle, James and Peter, Daniel and Robert, Sarah and Janelle, and one great-granddaughter, Britney. Elle laisse dans le deuil deux soeurs: Gabrielle Cormier et Gaetane Melanson (Jean-Paul), toutes deux de Moncton; un frère, Louis-Philippe (Marie-Virgilia) de Moncton, ainsi que plusieurs nièces et neveux. Harold Patterson Hayes HALIFAX, NS - Harold Patterson Hayes, 83, Halifax, passed away Saturday, March 20, 2004 in the Veterans Memorial Building, Halifax. Born in Lower Millstream, NB, he was a son of the late Harley and Jennie (Patterson) Hayes. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving in the RCN from 1942 - 1962, retiring with the rank of Chief Petty Officer 1st Class. During his career in the Navy, he was part of the design crew of the Restigouche Class of Destroyers. After his Naval Career, he was a Stationary Engineer at the Halifax Shopping Center, the Université du Moncton and lastly with Dalhousie University. He was a member of the Chief and PO'S Association. A Charter member of the Royal Canadian Legion Centennial Branch #160 and was a fixture in the Wesphal Plaza in their yearly Poppy Campaign. Harold was also a member the MicMac Mall 'Ticker Troop' and loved gardening. Surviving are daughters, Judi Magarvey, Melissa (Mike) Whiteland, Dartmouth and Linda (Bruce) O'Brien, Lyons Brook; grandchildren, Tracy, Mike, Sean, Jennie, Darren, Trevor, Mitchell, Matthew; and a great grandson Jacob; sisters, Esther Anne 'Teddie' MacKinnon, Granville Ferry, Betty Brisebois, BC; and brother, Bill, Ontario. Albert Anderson The death of Albert Anderson, age 91, of Moncton, formerly of Sackville, occurred at his residence in Moncton. Born in Sackville on July 26, 1912, he was a son of the late Aretus and Nettie (Etter) Anderson. He was a lifelong farmer and was active in the Liberal Association. He graduated from the Nova Scotia Agriculture College in 1933. ANTOINETTE MARIE (TONIE GRENON) MacDONALD January 22, 1921 - March 19, 2004 After having expressed thanksgiving for her life, Antoinette (Tonie Grenon) MacDonald went to her Maker on March 19, 2004 at the St. Boniface Hospital. Tonie was the widow of Thomas More MacDonald and the daughter of Omer and Rachelle Grenon, now deceased. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law John (Joan) Grenon; four nieces and eight nephews; their spouses and children and her very special cousins. Tonie grew up in the Fort Rouge area of Winnipeg. She attended St. Ignatius School and St. Mary's Academy. She was first employed by the Misericordia Hospital. Two years later she began working in the Canadian National Railway offices. She remained with the CNR in the Regional Comptroller's Department until 1982 when she retired from her position as Group Supervisor of the Labour Section. Among the organizations with which Tonie volunteered were the Canadian Girl Guides movement, the Canadian National Institute of the Blind, the Third Order of St. Francis, and her union, The Canadian Brotherhood of Railway Transportation. In December 1980 Tonie and Tom MacDonald were married. After her retirement, the two indulged their love of travel. Tom predeceased her in 1997. Tonie was especially appreciative of her caring group of friends near her home in the downtown area and of those in the Alzheimer patients spouses' support group. Prayers will be said on Wednesday, March 24 at 7:00 p.m. in the Desjardins Funeral Chapel, 357 Des Meurons St. The funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, March 25 at 2:00 p.m. in the St. Mary's Cathedral, 353 St. Mary Ave., Winnipeg.
