Peacefully on Wednesday, May 22, 2003 after a courageous 1 1/2-year battle with cancer, surrounded by his family. Horst was born in Eastern Germany in 1927 and immigrated to Canada in 1954 at the age of 27 to begin a new life. He was a machinist by trade but after completing a year-long farming contract, Horst held a number of interesting and diverse jobs, honing his skills in many different areas. He married Maria Michlbauer in December of 1956 in Ottawa and moved to Carlsbad Springs for a year shortly afterward. Daughters Monica and Ingrid were born in 1957 and 1959 respectively. Another move to Metcalfe took place before son Ralph was born in 1965. The Neuber clan settled for good in Oxford Mills in 1966. Horst began farming full-time in 1966 and quickly established a reputation as being diligent, knowledgeable and generous. He was a man who loved the good earth and all it has to offer. He also believed in an honest day's work and passed that on to all 3 of his children. He was known as the consummate handyman and all of his family and friends could share many stories of his skills with an arc welder, a grinder, a sledgehamêmer and a chainsaw. Horst also loved to visit and was famous for routinely extending hour-long errands to 3 or 4 hours. He was a great philosopher and knew a lot about many things and at least a little about most things. Horst would tell you he knew a lot about everything! Regardless, he loved to chat with friends and neighbours over a coffee to talk about life in general. Horst was an avid member of the Smiths Falls Fish and Game Club and spent many hours in the company of his friends there, as well as with his companions at the PATTA BUCK hunting camp. Special thanks to the support network of family and friends who helped Horst through his battle with illness, in particular those who drove him to his treatment sessions in Kingston. Thanks also to the ICU staff at Kingston General Hospital and the Kingston Regional Cancer Center for their support and kindness through a difficult time. We would also like to thank the following Pallbearers: Bill Watson, Bernie St. Denis, David Workman, Ron Cooke, Herman Tenbult, and Arnold Williams. Horst will be greatly missed by his loving wife Maria, daughters Monica and Ingrid, son Ralph, daughter-in-law Rachelle, sons-in-law Michael and Joel and grandchildren Tyler, Nicole, Alex and Morgan. Horst will also be missed by his brother Helmut and sister Helga in Germany, and by his many close friends in Canada and abroad. Horst would want those who love him to celebrate his life rather than mourn his passing.

On May 5, 2003, Kenneth Driscoll of Mayerthorpe, Alberta passed away in the Peace Arch Hospital, White Rock, BC at the age of 73 years. He is survived by his loving children, Eric (Phyllis) Driscoll of Ottawa, ON, Jean (Glenn) Larkin of Houghton, Michigan, Wayne (Cindy) Driscoll of Caronport, SK and Robyn (Julie) Driscoll of Vancouver, BC; nine grandchildren: Carrie, Debra, Sarah, Naomi, Hannah, Tabitha, Isaac, Alexandre and Felix; sisters: Jean Driscoll, Ruth Carrier and Beverly (Ralph) Lightle of Kemptville, ON, Gladys Ferguson of Calgary, AB, Eunice Ferguson of Osgoode, ON, and brother George Driscoll of London, ON. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Alice Driscoll (nee Christensen) in August 2000; sister Frances, and parents Eva and Simeon Driscoll. Ken was a navy veteran of the Korean War and served in the Canadian Air Force for a total of 27 and 1/2 years. On retirement, he began homesteading in Alberta and after 20 years, he and his wife sold their successful cattle farm and travelled extensively in Canada and the USA. He will be dearly missed. Cremation has taken place. A private service of remembrance will be held in June in Kemptville, ON. At his side were his loving wife, and family. Elliott was a wonderful husband, father and remarkable doctor who touched many, many lives. He is survived by his beloved wife Amy, his three children, Paul (Lynne) McCaughey, Claire McCaughey (Cyril Dabydeen) and Gail Stuart. He will be sorely missed by his treasured grandchildren Shane, Caitlin and Kevin McCaughey; Alana Dabydeen and Andy Stuart. Thanks to the many friends and family that helped ease the suffering of the past years, and a special thank you from Elliott to Wylie and Pamela Stewart, whose friendship and devotion was treasured and appreciated always. Last, but certainly not least, our gratitude to the doctors and staff at Saint Vincent Hospital that helped Elliott live and die with dignity. Their compassion and commitment was truly remarkable. BARR, The Honourable Mr. Justice John Roderick (Rod), Q.C., L.L.D., Born in Toronto on September 9, 1921, died in St. Catharines, Ontario May 30, 2003. Devoted and loving husband to the late Rhoda Marshall Barr. Predeceased by infant daughter Jane. Dearly loved by his son Peter, daughter Elizabeth and their spouses, Sharon Broderick and Stephen Perry. Adoring grandfather to John Barr and Nicholas, James and Christopher Perry. Brother and great friend of his sisters, Margaret Rhamey and the late Isabelle Marsh. As dear as a brother to sisters-in-law, Helen Caughey and Nellie Marshall. Rod was grateful for a full and happy life. He grew up in Hamilton, Ontario and enlisted in the R.C.A.F. at the outset of World War II. Rod first served as a Flight Instructor in Trenton, Ontario, where he met his future wife Nursing Sister Rhoda Marshall. Obtaining the rank of Flight Lieutenant, he served in 426 Squadron as a pilot with Bomber Command at Linton-on-Ouse, Yorkshire. At the end of the war, Rod studied law at Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1948. At that time, he and Rhoda established their home in St. Catharines where he enjoyed many years practicing civil litigation and where as a trial lawye r he earned the respect of his colleagues. Rod served as a Bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada and was a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers and the Advocates Society. He was appointed to the Supreme Court of Ontario, Trial Divisio n in 1983.Rod received an Honourary Doctorate of Laws from Brock University. He was an active member of the St. Catharines Flying Club and proud member of the St. Catharines Rowing Club. He took up sculling at the age of 52 and participated in Master s Rowing in Canada and the United States. He supported a large range of charities. No one less fortunate was ever turned away. Rod's insight and kindness was matched only by his wonderful, inimitable sense of humour. Above all, he loved and was loved by his family.The family is deeply grateful to Dr. R. Mackett, Dr. F. Fernand Saulnier 1918-2003 DUPUIS CORNER, NB-Fernand Saulnier, 84, of the Villa Providence, Shediac and formerly of Dupuis Corner passed away on Friday, May 30, 2003. Born in Dupuis Corner, December 30, 1918, he was the son of the late Alphée Saulnier and the late Olive Cormier. He was a veteran during World War II having served with the Royal Canadian Army, a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #91, Cap-Pelé and a former member of the Golden Age Club in Cap-Pelé. Prior to his retirement he was employed with Paturel's. Fernand is survived by five daughters, Fernande Messier(André) of Montréal, Lorette Orris (Marty) of St. Petersburg, FL., Cécilia Léger (Philippe Doiron) of Shediac, Denise Blanchard (Raymond Léger) of Grand-Barachois, Lisa Curwin (Mark) of Cap-Pelé; four sons, Jean (Florence), Emery (Claire), Néri (Carmella) and André (Rachelle) all of Cap-Pelé; one sister, Yvonne LeBlanc of Cap-Pelé; four brothers, Claudin of Leominster, Mass., Aquila (Jeannine) and Camille (Adrienne) of CapPelé, Gérard (Frella) of Moncton; 18 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Solange was originally from Winnipeg. She had lived in the Vancouver area for the past 30 years. In April she went back to Winnipeg to visit and fell very ill. After six long, difficult weeks in hospital she passed away on Wednesday. A funeral mass will be at St. Norbert Catholic Church in Winnipeg at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 31st. For "the B.C. gang," there will be a memorial service by Father Patrick Tetoorten at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 315 Walker St. (off Blue Mountain), Coquitlam, at 7 p.m., Thursday, June 5, with a reception to follow downstairs. On May 29, 2003, Gordon passed away peacefully in Chateauguay at the age of seventy-three. He is now reunited with his beloved parents and other loved ones. He will be remembered by his sons Steven (Sandra) and John (Kimberly), his grandchildren Leslie, Jessica, Annastacia, Alexander and Joseph. He is survived by his brothers Kenneth (Shirley) and Russel (Crystal). 59 yrs. Errol died tragically but in good spirits, on Sunday 18 May 2003, in an automobile accident near Santa Cruz, Bolivia, with colleague Jean-Claude Lauzier after their vehicle left the road in the foothills of the Andes Mountains. He was participating in a Canadian government mission to initiate a tri-lateral project concerning environmental protection within the Bolivian mining industry. Errol is lovingly survived by his mother Lena, daughter Celeste, son David, grandson Marcus, brother Leon, a wealth of extended family in South Africa and by his companion, Doris. In parting he joins his late father Jackie and brother Beville. A private ceremony and cremation was arranged in Bolivia by the Canadian Consulate on Thursday 22 May and attended by Celeste, David and Doris. Friends and colleagues are invited to pay their final respects at a reception in Errol's honour at McEvoy Shields Funeral Home, 235 Kent St., Ottawa, on Thursday 5 June between 4-6 p.m. Words of farewell will be delivered at 5 p.m. Flowers may be sent directly to the indicated address.

SOBCZAK, Edmund, With the love and comfort of his family surrounding him, at Hotel Dieu Hospital on Monday, May 26, 2003 at the age of 85, Edmund left us to join the angels in heaven. Devoted husband of Pauline for 57 years and cherished Tatusz of H alina Slota and Stefan Chwalczuk. Forever loving Dzidzi to Sandra, Sheldon and Baby Eric Randall; Jackie Slota and her fiance Todd Molnar; and Chris, Janice and little Lukasz Slota. Edmund was born in Poland and came to Canada from Belgium in 1953 in search of a better life for his family. He worked at the Ontario Paper Company for 27 years and enjoyed a long retirement, spending summers in his garden and winters watching hockey, with his favourite team being the Maple Leafs. Words cannot expres s how much his kind and gentle soul will be missed by all those who knew him. The family wish to express their gratitude to Dr. Kerley, Dr. Shao, Dr. Chauhan and ParaMed staff Ann and Glenda, without whose care Dzidzi would not have been able to enjo y the birth of two great-grandchildren and the engagement of Jackie to Todd. A very special thank you to the Palliative Care Staff (especially nurse Pat) at Hotel Dieu Hospital for their care and compassion. Thank you also to nurse Linda in Emergency who told us almost two years ago that every day is a gift - she was so right.
