Died peacefully at the age of 86 years on the evening of Saturday, November 24, 2001 following a long illness. Phemia, the eldest child of the late Hilliard and Ethel (nee Sproule) Magwood of Ottawa was predeceased by her sisters, Mary (Treherne, Manitoba), Viola (Saskatoon) and Willa Jean (Ottawa); brothers Robert (Ottawa) and John (Bridgetown, Nova Scotia); nephew Chris (John) and brother-in-law Howard Gibson (Mary). Phemia spent her early years in Saskatchewan and moved to Ottawa in 1941 to work in the Treasury Department and CIDA until her retirement in 1974. In that interval she was joined in Ottawa by many members of her family. She will be greatly missed by her sister Edith and brother Stan; her sisters-in-law Ethel (nee White) (Robert), Kathleen (nee Brewer) (John) and Kathleen (nee Kapros) (Stan); by eleven nieces and nephews, twenty-one grand-nieces and grand-nephews, and two great-grand-nieces. The family wishes to thank all of the health professionals at Carling View Manor and the staff of Direct Care who provided care and comfort to our dear Phemia and her family. The family will receive relatives and friends at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair and McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Ave. at Richmond Road on Wednesday, November 28 from 7 to 9 p.m. Interment will take place at Pinecrest Cemetery following a private family burial service. Aged 93. Passed away peacefully in her sleep at the Bethany Harvest Hills on Saturday, November 24, 2001. She is the beloved wife of Wilfred P. Brideaux, and the dear mother of Wayne W. Brideaux, both of Calgary. Frances is also survived by two grandsons, Philip, Toronto, ON and Stuart, Calgary, her niece Anita, Gaspe, PQ and her daughter-in-law Marjorie Brideaux, Calgary. She was predeceased by her sister Mildred, and two brothers, Louis and Otis. Frances was born in Gaspe, PQ, May 12, 1908 and lived in Gaspe, Amos, PQ, Montreal and Ottawa before moving to Calgary in 1997. She married "Fred" Brideaux on October 17, 1931 and lived to celebrate her 70th Wedding Anniversary in October 2001. Frances liked cooking, petit point, bridge and as a child of the depression, always loved a good bargain. In her last decade Frances suffered from dementia but retained a sense of humour to the end. Following cremation, a graveside service will be held for family and close friends at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens. A MEMORIAL SERVICE to celebrate Frances' life will be held in the Chapel of the EDGEMONT RETIREMENT HOME, 80 Edenwold Drive NW, on Thursday, November 29, 2001 at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Passed away peacefully in her sleep Friday, November 23, 2001 at the Lakeshore General Hospital. Predeceased by her sisters Myrtle (Wass) and Doris (LaPierre). Born in Montreal March 5, 1916. She was a devoted mother, a retired homemaker and the widow of Captain Donald McVicar, OBE, RAFFC, founder of World Wide Airways, and Arctic Pioneer. They retired to Freeport, Grand Bahama Island and also resided in Miami Springs, Florida before returning to Canada. She served as his consultant and historical adviser during his long career as an Aviation Author while living in Dorval, Quebec. She is survived by her brother Edward Allen Waugh of Winnipeg, her beloved children Donna McVicar Cannon of Englewood, Florida, Donald Gordon McVicar and Bruce Campbell McVicar of Montreal and her six precious grandchildren Amanda, Christianna, Jamie, Brandon, Lindsay and Kevin. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, November 28 at J.J. VICTOR C. RAICHE Victor C. Raiche, 94, passed away peacefully Friday, Nov. 23, 2001 at La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont. He had made his home in Rainycrest Home for the Aged here. Victor was born in Maple Lake, Mn. on Nov. 22, 1907 but in 1917, he moved with his parents, Joseph and Kate (Monaghan) Raiche, to Humbolt, Sask. In 1920, the family lived for two years in Pinewood, Ont. prior to settling on a homestead north of Pinewood in Sutherland & Nelles Township. He lived there until 1956, when he moved to Fort Frances, where he had resided since. On July 2, 1929, he was united in marriage to Ida May King, daughter of Janet and R.H. King in Pinewood, Ont. During the early years, he farmed, trapped, logged, hauled pulp, and was a guide for hunting and fishing parties. He also owned and operated a sawmill in his yard. His great love, however, was prospecting. He worked for Hydro in White Dog Falls, Ont. prior to his employment with the Department of Lands and Forests (1958-1975). He worked as a fire crew leader and was the last fire ranger to man the Calm Lake fire tower. He also supervised tree planting, the building of roads, and other projects. Victor was a man of many talents and interests. He had a creative, scientific mind, observant eye, wisdom that he freely shared with others, and keen Irish wit. He enjoyed telling stories to family and anyone else who would listen. His original paintings hang on the walls of family, and many people have danced to the music of Vic and his fiddle. Victor was predeceased by his wife, Ida May Raiche, on Dec. 5, 1989; mother, Kate Raiche, on Dec. 2, 1960; father, Joseph Raiche, on Feb. 6, 1971; and brother, Michael Raiche, on June 25, 1960. He is survived by two daughters, Marjorie (Joe) Vautrin of Calgary, Alta., and Erma (Bob) Armit of Fort Frances, Ont. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Terry (Tammy) Kaliska of Wawang Lake, Ont., Donna Warwoda of Calgary, Alta., Sheri (Jim Sommerville) of Calgary, Alta., Tamara (Richard) Knox of Calgary, Alta., Lorraine Robertson of Winnipeg, Man., Wanda (Dick) Botsford of Fort Frances, Ont., Victor (Penny) Armit of Fort Frances, Ont., and Donald (Jackie) Armit of Ignace, Ont.; 21 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. A celebration of Victor’s life will be held Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001 at 2 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances. Father Eugene Whyte O.M.I. will officiate, with Rev. Diane Clifford assisting. His family will provide the music—thanks to his inspiration. Interment will be at Riverview Cemetery. Friends and family may visit prior to the funeral celebration. Pallbearers will be Dick, Bob, Nic, and Jordan Botsford, Daniel Ellis, and Gary Holmes. Honour-ary pallbearers will be all his family and friends who attend. Former elder of St. Andrew's United Church, Westmount and Knowlton United Church; founding President of Pine Beach Citizens' Association, Dorval (1951); co-founder of Pine Beach Boy Scout Group (1952); former councilor for Town of West Bolton, Quebec; Honorary Life Member of Purchasing Management Association; retired from Aluminum Company of Canada in 1976. (Mary Margaret Grace) Sister Mary Alice, a Grey Sister of the Immaculate Conception, died at Shalom Residence, Pembroke, Ontario, on the 25th of November in the sixty-eighth year of her religious life. Predeceased by her parents, Henry M. and Alice (O'Callaghan) Grace and by four brothers and a sister. Besides the members of her religious congregation, Sister leaves to mourn many beloved nieces and nephews. A teacher by profession, Sister Mary Alice carried out this ministry for twenty-four years at Immaculata High School, Ottawa. She then served for nine years as Novice Director in Pembroke. Later, she served in Yamasa, Dominican Republic; in Esterhazy, Saskatchewan; at Pembroke General Hospital and Marianhill in Pembroke and at St. Patrick's Home in Ottawa. In 1995 she retired to the Motherhouse, Pembroke and to Shalom Residence in 1997. Resting at the Grey Sisters' Motherhouse, 700 Mackay Street, Pembroke from 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday November 27th. At the Township of Osgoode Care Centre on Saturday, November 24th, 2001, Robert James Armstrong of Carlsbad Springs in his 88th year. Born April 12, 1914, in Belfast, Ireland, he came to Canada at the age of 14 and shared his life with 5 generations of Andersons. Loved by them; Robert and Norma Anderson, Howard (Doris), Grant (Wendy) and Douglas; late Bill Anderson, his wife Heather, Susan, Laurie (Jennifer) and Sandra. Brother of Samuel and uncle of five nieces and nephews all of Belfast, Ireland. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at the Duncan Funeral Home, 6971 Bank Street (formerly Highway 31, between Scrivens Drive and Metcalfe Corner) from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. Funeral Tuesday in the Chapel for Service at 11 a.m. Committal service and interment to take place at Ramsayville Cemetery. Marion Isobel Brackenbury, beloved wife of the late Ronald Toone, dearly loved Mum of Elinor (Ian) McRae of Almonte, much loved grandma of Cathy of Almonte, Lori of Pakenham and Kim (Jeff) of Almonte. Dearly loved great-grandma of Ryan McRae and Scott, Bryan, Erin and Katie Hawkins. Sadly missed by her sisters-in-law Edith Brackenbury, Margaret Ford and Muriel Taggart Perry and her many special nieces, nephews and friends. Predeceased by her five brothers and sisters, Gordon, Elva, Ruth, Earle and Easton. Her devotion to her career of teaching and her service to Care Canada brought her much joy and many friendships. Madeline Lough passed away peacefully at the Ottawa General Hospital on Thursday November 15 2001 surrounded by her family. "Maddy was a sweet, loving, wonderful person, enriching the lives of all who knew her. She was strong, brave, feisty and independent, with a quick wit and wry sense of humour. She did many things over the course of her life, always learning and never afraid to try something new. When stricken with cancer in her fifties, she refused to give up and in fact, she fought the disease for over twenty years. Maddy was not the kind of woman who complained, nor did she invite sympathy or pity. Instead, she took life as it came always searching out the good things, seeing the bright side of life. Madeline understood that happiness came from within and she helped others realize it a well." Maddy is predeceased by her husband Wilbur "Pat" Lough and by her parents Clarence and Eva Reid. Survived by her sons William and wife Norma Cassidy and James and wife Michelle Ellis; grandchildren Sean, Michelle, Alexander and Erin; sisters Shirley Parr and Joyce Haggerman; brothers Jim, Delbert, and Wayne Reid, sister-in-law Gladys Sills. She will be sadly and sorely missed by her entire family and will always share a piece of our hearts. Service was held at the Bellevile Funeral Home and Chapel, on Saturday November 24 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciated donations to the Canadian Cancer Society.
