(nee Bednarsky). Passed away at peace in her faith after an inspiring battle with cancer on June 4, 2001, surrounded by her family. Diana was the cherished wife and best friend of Ariel and the proud mother of Talya and Micheal. She also leaves her parents, Stella and Stanley Bednarsky, and her sister Susan. She will be missed by everyone she touched in her lifetime. Visitation will be on Friday, June 8, 2001 from 4 p.m to 8 p.m. at the Centre funeraire Cote-des-Neiges located at 4525 ch. de la Cote-des-Neiges, Montreal, Quebec. A Celebratory Mass will take place on Saturday, June 9, 2001, at 11:30 a.m. at Saint Thomas Aquinas Church on 413 Main, in Hudson, Quebec. Died peacefully on Sunday, June 3, 2001, ten days short of his 92nd birthday. Jack was born June 13, 1909 in Calgary. He is survived by his beloved wife of almost sixty-four years, Iris; his children Peter (Michele) and Jill (Dennis Burns), his grandchildren Catherine Fleming, Timothy and Anna Burns. Jack began his newspaper career with the Albertan before moving east to join Canadian Press and the Globe and Mail, where he became the news editor. In 1948 he moved in to Public Relations, first in Chatham, Ontario and then returning west, in Calgary with Canadian Utilities. His great love in life was his family and he was always present at every ceremony, party and game. He was devoted to Iris and pushed her everywhere in her wheelchair. He loved golf and hiking and his hearty laugh was heard at many social occasions. Funeral Services will be held at Christ Church Elbow Park (3602-8th Street S.W.) on Friday, June 8, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Roy Darcus officiating. Dorothy Priscilla Thompson December 06, 1907 - June 06, 2001 (Long time employee of the T. Eatons Co. retiring after 25 years of service) At St. Joseph’s Hospital on Wednesday June 6, 2001. Dorothy Priscilla Thompson (nee: Greening) of Hamilton in her 94th year. Survived by her beloved son Robert Thompson of Hamilton, her sister Emma Holfert of St. Clair, Mich., daughter-in-law Dorothy Thompson, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren and her furry companion Tippy. Dorothy is predeceased by her husband John William Sr. (1971), her dear sons; John William Thompson Jr (1989) and Sergeant James Thompson of the USAF (1952) and by her dear granddaughter Diane Thompson (1988). ROY GEORGE MORROW After a lengthy battle with cancer, Roy passed away Wednesday, June 6, 2001 with his family at his side. Roy was born in Fleming, Sask. on Oct. 29, 1915 to a farming family. He grew up playing hockey and baseball, travelling between towns on the train. In 1937, Roy joined the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery. He served in the forces for 33 years with several medals awarded to him, including the 1939-45 Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Service, and the 1939-45 War Medal. Roy retired to a second career as the Social Services officer for the Rainy River District. He enjoyed his time serving the people of the area, and was always most pleased when someone became self-sufficient. He retired from his last career after 14 years. He was predeceased by his parents, Jane and George Morrow. Roy is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Eileen; two sons, Alan Morrow and wife, Nancy, of Kingston, Ont., and Rob Morrow and wife, Wendy, of Ottawa, Ont.; and one daughter, Lenore and husband, Mitch Ohta, of Pinawa, Man. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Jeff Morrow and fiancé, Heidi, Greg Morrow, Matthew Morrow, Amy Morrow, Tammy Ohta, Kathleen and husband, Steve Tiede, and Derek Ohta; one great-grandson, Carson Tiede; and one sister, Eltha and husband, John Rose, of Burns Lake, B.C. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 8, 2001 at 2 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances, Ont. Pastor Marion McCreadie will officiate, with interment in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances. Friends may visit Friday from 1 until 2 p.m. at Green Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Merdo Krawchuk, Bill Badiuk, Cal Thorpe, Fred Beck, Stan Sockolotuk, and Steve Melnychuk. F.E.I.C., F.C.A.E., P.Eng. Peacefully at the Elisabeth Bruyere Centre, on June 5, 2001, in his 88th year. Dear father of Pat, Bruce, Douglas and his wife Claudette. Predeceased by his beloved wife Alison (Haig). Loving uncle and great uncle to many nieces and nephews. Long time friend and companion of in-laws Allyn Taylor of London and Douglas, Doreen and Marion Haig of Victoria. Gerry spent 41 years in public service to Canada as a civic engineer. Starting out in 1935 as a gravel checker with the Manitoba Department of Public Works, he rose to become Chief Engineer for the province. In 1955, he was invited to join the federal Department of Public Works and in 1976 was appointed Deputy Minister. During his time in Public Works he oversaw many important projects, the one he was proudest of was the building of the Trans-Canada Highway, for which he was Chief Engineer. He believed in the importance of community and acted on his beliefs. He served on the boards of the Grace Hospital, the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority as well as being a Steward of Southminster United Church. He was also a very active member of many professional engineering associations and Honourary Warden of the Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer. An enthusiastic golfer he spent many happy hours with his friends at the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club. In private life he was a devoted husband, an exemplary father, a caring friend, and a good neighbour. The family would like to thank all those who helped Gerry in the last years of his long and happy life, especially his caregiver Pierre Mitton, and the staff at Rideau Place and the Elisabeth Bruyere Centre. JERRY GESLEY BEAUDETTE Jerry Gesley Beaudette, 84, of West Falls Est., International Falls, Mn., passed away Wednesday, June 6, 2001 at his home. He was born May 21, 1917 in Watertown, S.D. but he grew up in Minneapolis, Mn. He moved to International Falls in 1979. On Aug. 3, 1943, he was united in marriage to the former Viola Morrine Mertz in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Jerry worked in the printing department for Gambles Skogmo for several years, and was a salesman for Scriptomatic. He retired to Rainy Lake. He was involved with the Minneapolis Aquatennial, and was an Aqua Jester. He also was a member of the Minnesota Investors’ Congress, the Minneapolis Athletic Club, and Zion Lutheran Church. He was in the U.S. Air Force from 1941-45. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Eunice (Gesley) Beaudette; and son, Jerry J. Beaudette. He is survived by his wife, Viola; daughter, Barbara (Bruce) Nelson of Eden Prairie, Mn.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Jerry will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 8, 2001 at 11 a.m. at the Green-Larsen Memorial Chapel in International Falls, with flag presentation. Rev. Robert Ek will officiate. Interment will be held in Mount Hope Cemetery in Watertown, S.D. on Monday, June 11, 2001.

VALEDA ELIZABETH DeGAGNE Valeda Elizabeth DeGagne, 90, of Rainycrest Home for the Aged, 550 Osborne St., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away at her residence Sunday, June 3, 2001. Mrs. DeGagne was born Jan. 15, 1911 in LaBroquerie, Man., where she was raised. In September, 1936, she moved to Crozier, Ont., where she lived until moving to Fort Frances. She later moved to Winnipeg, Man., where she lived until recently returning to Fort Frances. She was a member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church and the Catholic Women’s League in Fort Frances. She had worked at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, and also was a foster parent for many years. She loved gardening and cooking, and spent her life raising her family and foster children. Valeda was united in marriage Nov. 9, 1927 to Odilas DeGagne, who predeceased her Oct. 31, 1969. She also was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Maria Chartier; grandson, Paul LaFleur in 1962; granddaughter, Caron DeGagne in 1986; three brothers; one sister; son-in-law, Jean Paul LaFleur in 1986; daughter-in-law, Madeline in 1986; and sons, Laurent and Charles Etienne in 1994. She is survived by her sons, Orielle and wife, Pearl, of Fort Frances, Ont.; Felix and wife, Elsie, of Dryden, Ont., Emile and wife, Bernice, of Kenora, Ont., Edmond and wife, Claudette, of Winnipeg, Man., Yves and wife, Kathleen, of Alberton Township, Ont., Rene and wife, Mona, of Foremost, Alta., and Maurice and wife Patricia, of Winnipeg, Man.; and daughters, Lucille LaFleur of Winnipeg, Man., Lillian and husband, Mike Bodnar, of Crozier, Ont., Lorraine DeGagne of Fort Frances, Ont., and Laura DeGagne and special friend, Ron Tausenfrende, of Devlin, Ont. Also surviving are 45 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; two great-great-granchildren; sister, Mary and husband, Sid Anderson, of Vermilion Bay, Ont.; daughter-in-law, Eleanor DeGagne of Fort Frances, Ont.; sisters-in-law, Maude Gauthier of B.C., Suzanne Chartier of B.C., Daisy Mae DeGagne of Fort Frances, Ont., Flora Jolicoeur of St. Boniface, Man., Raylene Hebert of Crozier, Ont., and Cheryl LaBelle of Emo, Ont., who joined our family at the ages of five and three years; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 6, 2001 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church. Fr. Tom Meyer O.M.I. officiated, with interment in Holy Cross Cemetery in Fort Frances. Parish prayers were offered by the Catholic Women’s League on Tuesday, June 5, 2001 at 7 p.m. at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church. Pallbearers were her grandsons, Randy DeGagne, Mark LaFleur, Rick DeGagne, Cam DeGagne, Lawrence DeGagne Jr., and Carl DeGagne. Honourary pallbearers were her grandchildren. DON START William Donovan Start, 94, of Abbotsford, B.C., passed away peacefully Thursday, May 31, 2001. Don was predeceased by his wife, Germaine, in 1989. Surviving are his son, Hube, and wife, Karen, of Abbotsford; grandchildren, Jan and Dale and their families; and sister, Kathleen. Born in Curries, Ont., Don graduated in Forestry from the University of Toronto in 1930, and married Germaine Nicole of Grand Mere, Que. in 1937. They lived in Kenora, Ont. for 20 years before moving to Fort Frances, Ont. in 1963. After many years as chief forester of the Minnesota and Ontario Pulp & Paper Co. in both communities, Don retired in 1971. He then was able to more fully pursue his favourite pastime of gardening. George was born in Star City, Saskatchewan, son of the late James Parnell Johnson, a Vice President of Canadian National Railways (Castlebar, Quebec) and Blanche Mary Smith (Almonte and North Bay, Ontario). George was predeceased by his dearly loved wife Mary Katherine Kingston (Ferry Road, New Brunswick) and is survived by their children Mae Blanche Burke and her children Sarah and Harry of Oakville, Ontario, Alice Elizabeth Paige (Ian) and their children Emily and Daniel of Pakenham, Ontario, George Manning Johnson (Jane) and their children Hannah and Maggie of Kanata, Ontario, Anne Katherine Cheslock (Donnie) and their son Michael of Waba, Ontario, Norma Sophia More (Ken) and their sons Andrew and Matthew of Wellington, Ontario. George is survived by his dear and much loved wife Joanne Faith Farrington-Newton and her children Thomas (Linda) of Christchurch, New Zealand, Joanne (Bill) of Ottawa, Ontario, Susanne (Paul) of Wellington, New Zealand, Timothy (Agnieszka) of Vancouver, British Columbia, and Rosemary (Ted) of Green Lane, Pennsylvania, and by his stepgrandchildren Hilary, Kelly, Masha, James and Alexandra. George was predeceased by his dear sister Mae Blanche and is survived by his cherished sister Elizabeth Ann Dignan (Windsor, Ontario) and her family of John, James, Michael, Paul, Mary Theresa and Constance. A veteran of World War II, George served in Northwest Europe in the Royal Canadian Artillery. He was an Observer in the Second Canadian Survey Regiment. George worked in the construction industry for over forty years, rising to the Presidency of M. Sullivan and Sons, Arnprior. In the industry, he was known for his integrity and it was well known that his word was his bond. He devoted himself to ensuring the security of Ontario's workers and their families as a founding member of the Provincial Council of Carpenters Welfare and Pension Fund. He continued to serve as a Council Trustee for thirty years. In recent years, George offered his expertise to public boards and oversaw construction of the Renfrew County Administration Building, Pembroke, and the buildings of the Family and Children's Services and the YMCA, Brockville. George served the town of Arnprior first as Councillor, then Mayor. He was the driving force behind the building of the Arnprior Civic Centre and was instrumental in the rehabilitation of many new homes in the town center. He was a member of the Board of Governors of Algonquin College and the Arnprior and District Hospital. George Johnson was an effective and caring man who devoted himself to God and family, community and work. His jobs are priced and the tenders are in, there's a paper to read and a sharp debate, a tenor to enjoy and a good meal to eat. It is with much sadness that the family of Howard R. Campbell announce his passing on Monday, June 4, 2001, at the age of 91. He was the son of James and Nettie Campbell of Canfield, Ontario and brother of the late Nellie Charlton (John) of Paris, Ontario. Howie was the beloved husband of the late Edythe F. Campbell (McFarlane) and dearest father of Barbara Millar (late J. Ross Millar) of Ottawa, and of Jim Campbell (Linda) of Toronto. Loving grandfather to James (Maribeth) of Boston, David (Claire), and Pam of Ottawa, and of Catherine (Scot), Christine (Kent), and Sandra of Toronto. Loved great-grandfather of Hailey, Evan, and Casey Millar and of Darby, Anna, and Kathleen Millar. Visitation will be at the Humphrey Funeral Home - A.W.
