After a long and heroic battle with Leukemia, Bob Mattina passed away at the Ottawa General Hospital on Thursday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m. In his final days, Bob was surrounded by his beloved wife Mary (nee Douglas) and devoted children Todd and Robyn. Bob will be missed by his sister Diane Mulrooney (Phil) of Burlington, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Bob had a long and distinguished career at Consulting and Audit Canada and he also served as President of Big Brothers, Ottawa Chapter. In failing health over the last year, he could still be seen on the golf course or spending time on his porch. QC, FRSC On Saturday, February 17, 2001, Norman passed away peacefully in Edmonton, a month shy of his 88th birthday. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Magda (Kemeny), 2 sons, Kem (Donna), and David (Chris), 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Born and educated in Manchester, England (B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D and Doctor of Science), Norman spent most of his life dedicated to chemistry, particularly spectroscopy and the importance of computers in handling data, at the National Research Council in Ottawa. Internationally renowned for his research, Norman made a number of important discoveries, produced over 300 research publications and represented Canada on many international organizations. After his official retirement from NRC in 1978, he and Magda travelled extensively as he continued his research and teaching, including 3 years at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. In 1992 they moved to Edmonton where he continued his academic work at the University of Alberta. Recognized for his contribution through many professional awards and 2 honorary degrees he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1999. A memorial celebrating his life will be held at Garneau United Place, 11148 - 84th Avenue, Edmonton, on Saturday, March 17, 2001, at 2 p.m. A private family inurnment has been held. Born May 19, 1918, died at home in Creg Quay, Bainsville on Thursday, March 1, 2001. Beloved husband of Myrna. Dear father of Leslie Alison Hennessy of Colorado and dear grandfather of Christopher Hennessy and Alison Hennessy. Dear brother of Gordon (Madelaine) of Marmora, Ontario. Predeceased by his first wife Helen Hartley, married in 1939. Also predeceased by brother, Lorne. Also survived by step-children, Bryan Herbert, Lynn Herbert, Jaye Herbert-Davis (Joseph) and step-grandchildren Harmoni Herbert, Ryan Davis and Shanti Davis. Son of the late Duncan Gow and the late Carrie Palmer. He joined the Canadian Army in Ottawa in 1939. He was captured in Dieppe, France by the German Army in August 1942 and was released from German prison camp in June 1945. After the War, he settled in Dorval, Quebec and worked for Gardner Trailers in Montreal. Eventually, he purchased the company and formed Trailbec with longtime partner Paul Maher. George was a member of Summerlea Golf Club for 40 years and leaves many good friends and golfing buddies to carry on the good fight. Relatives and friends may call at Munro & Morris Funeral Home, 46 Oak Street, Lancaster, Ontario from 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, March 4, 2001 and on Monday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel of the Funeral Home on Monday, March 5, 2001 at 11 a.m., Rev. (27 + year employee of Dominion Textiles and World War II Veteran of France and Holland.) Peacefully in his sleep on March 1, 2001, in his eighty-ninth year. Survived by his loving wife Betty. Sadly missed by his brother Gordon of Whitby and sister Jessie of Montreal. Lovingly remembered by his 3 sons, Eric and his wife Wanda, Dean and his wife Natalie and Ron and his wife Jane. Andrew will be sadly missed by his seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
