Loving husband of the late Alli Kuirinlahti (nee Wahlberg). Beloved father of Carol Susanna Kuirinlahti and spouse Joel Sloan, and Anne Lisbeth Kuirinlahti and husband Andy Chamard. Dear Pappa of Sydney and Carson Sloan and Ivy Chamard. Predeceased by his parents Sanni and Hanne Kuirinlahti and his brother Erikki Kuirinlahti. Fondly remembered by his cousins Reima and Timo Nojonen of St.Catharines and by his many nieces, nephew, cousins and friends. WINDJACK, Orest (Orrie) - Born in Insinger, Saskatchewan passed away peacefully on Sunday October 26th, 2008 in his 78th year. Predeceased by wife Mary of more than 55 years. Much loved father of Jim (Lynn) of St.Catharines and Teri (Dale) of London. Gramps will be sadly missed by Nikki, Murray (Vanessa), James, Lisa (Jeremy) and Darcy. He was the proud great-grandpa of Benjamin. He is survived by two sisters Dorothy Kadechuk and Emily Rybski. HAINES, Mabel Irene - Mabel Haines, born on February 1, 1914 in Euphrasia Township, a loving daughter of Joseph and Margaret (née Smith) Thompson, passed away on Saturday October 25, 2008, in Shelburne, Ontario in her 95th year. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Leonard Harry Haines, on March 6, 1986, with whom she spent the greatest years of her life. She was a loving mother to Margaret 'Peg' Craig (Iain) of Kleinburg, and James 'Jim' Haines (Joanne) of Durham and a cherished grandmother to Andrea Welburn (Andrew), Scott Craig, Paul and Peter Haines and great grandmother to Evan and Claire Welburn. Mabel was predeceased also by her sister Ursula, and brothers Ernie, Comfort, Charles, and William. She will be fondly remembered by sisters-in-law: Lucy Thompson of Euphrasia Township, Mary Haines of Meaford, Beryl Haines of Scarborough, Fern Allen formerly Barrie, and Hazel Haines of Meaford. Mabel grew up on the third line in Euphrasia Township, and moved across the road when she got married in 1938. Len and Mabel moved to Toronto in 1954, but always went back to the farm on weekends. After Len retired, they moved back to the farm in 1969, and Mabel lived there until 2003. While “the kids“ were going to school in Toronto, Mabel worked for many years at General Mills, and Len worked for Ontario Hydro. Mabel's heart was always in the farm. Friends and relatives who visited Len and Mabel at the farm, were always guaranteed a huge home cooked meal, an afternoon drink, and a game of euchre. In her later years, quilting, visiting friends, spending time with her grandchildren (who she could wrestle to the ground) and local social events occupied Mabel's life. Mabel was always an energetic 'let's get at it and finish before the cows come home', type of person. She and Len were extremely proud of their kids, and their grandchildren and encouraged them all in everything they did. She had a pioneer spirit that constantly pushed her to cope with everyday life, and to help others whenever she could. Her family and friends will miss her, but will not forget her passion for life. MICHAILISHIN, Olga 2008-10-27 widow of Peter Michailishin of Lanigan passed away on Saturday October 18, 2008 at Regina General Hospital. She was 83 years of age. Olga (nee Leciuk) Michailishin was born August 20, 1925 at Ituna, Saskatchewan, a daughter of Katherine (nee Kowalyk) and Nick Leciuk. Olga attended File Hills School. On April 23, 1951 she obtained her Certified Nursing Assistant diploma from the Province of Ontario. Olga met the love of her life Peter an immigrant from the Ukraine, they were united in marriage on July 12, 1951 at the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Ituna. Olga & Peter lived and worked many years in Thunder Bay, Ontario. They were very active in the church, volunteer and political organizations. Olga took a hair dressing course, cake decorating and an oil painting class, as well she was very involved in catering for their church. In 1997 they moved from Thunder Bay to Lanigan, Sk. Where they purchased a home for their final retirement years. Olga had lived a good, active life until just the past couple of months when her health started to fail. At the end of September she moved to the nursing home at Strasbourg. Olga passed away on Saturday October 18, 2008 at Regina General Hospital. She was 83 years of age. Olga was predeceased by her husband Peter, her parents Nick & Katherine Leciuk, her sisters and their husbands: Lena and Fred Shewchuk, Sophie & Jake Unger and her Brother Bill Leciuk. Olga will be fondly remembered and missed by her sisters: Beatrice (Bill) Schur and Anne (Omar) Sather, her nephews & nieces: Gunnar(Liz) Ivans, Arvid (Barb) Ivans, Janet Schur, James (Eileen) Schur, Chantel (Tom) Derbyshire, Rhonda (Randy) Sather, Glenna (Jim) Curry, Leanne (Tim) Fell; and great nieces and nephews: Sonia, Kristie (Kyle), Jackie, Steven, McKayla, Braden, Alexis, Haley and Austin and numerous God children. Prayer Services were held on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at 7:00 pm from Holy Ghost Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Ituna. Funeral Services were held Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at 10:00 am from Holy Ghost Ukrainian Orthodox Church with Very Rev. Archpriest Peter Wasylenko officiating. The responses were sung by William Kozey with members of Holy Ghost Parish. Great niece, Alexis Schur served as the crossbearer and great niece and nephew, McKayla and Braden Curry served as banner bearers. Interment followed in the parish cemetery with Omar Sather, James Schur, Tom Derbyshire, Gunner Ivans, Jim Curry and Randy Murray serving as casketbearers. Vichnaya Pamyat! Eternal Memory! READ, Donald Rae September 20, 1933 - October 22, 2008 Donald Rae Read, beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully on October 22, 2008 at the age of 75 years. Don was born September 20, 1933 in Hanna, Alberta; the first child of Arnold and Evelyn. He received certification as an Architectural Hardware Consultant (AHC), beginning a career that spanned fifty plus years. His career encompassed projects in both Canada and the United States; including schools, hospitals, the University of Calgary, SAIT, 1988 Olympic venues, G7 Summit, Ronald Reagan Memorial Library, Gulf War, N.Y. Super Max Prison and the recovery mission of 9/11. Working until his seventy-third year as an AHC, Don moved on to volunteer for the Calgary Inter-Faith Food Bank, becoming the first gentleman volunteer in their Baby Section. Family brought Don his greatest joy, instilling the love and importance of family values was a lifetime's work. Don will be greatly missed by his children, Ron (Lois), Lynn, Craig (Rose), Lisa (Darcy); his most cherished granddaughters, Rachael, Brieannah, Rebecka, Monicca and Jaylin. Also sharing in this loss is Don's brother Ken and his sister Linda (Terry) Conley and their children and grandchildren; and his favourite aunt Ada Smith. Don was predeceased by his loving wife Gail. Loving father of Linda Frappier (Roger), Louise Veilleux (Gilbert), Diane Valiquette (Mike) and Dan (Kim) all of Sudbury. Sadly missed and cherished by his grandchildren Michel (Erin), Julie (André), André, Mélanie, Alain and by his great-grandchildren Natalie, Josée, Alexandre, Nicholas, and many nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. Predeceased by his son-in-law Robert Prévost, grandson Paul Frappier and also by several brothers and one sister. Dear brother of Rhéal Gauthier (Léona) and Huguette Hamel both of Sudbury. Mr. Gauthier worked 34 years as a miner for INCO and was a member of the 1/4 Century Club. A special thank you to Dr. Guy Mongeon, and also the doctors and nurses on the 8th floor at the Laurentian Site for their care and compassion. Aimé was very proud of his family and lived his life to the fullest. He enjoyed many years at camp on Pickerel River. His passion was fishing, hunting, playing crib, and watching his grandson play for the Sudbury Wolves. He was also an avid Montreal Canadians fan. Aimé would spend hours reading his Bible and enjoyed discussing politics. The tears we are shedding are from missing his smile, laughter and devoted love which he unselfishly gave us all of his life. He left this earth and now is in God's heavenly garden. We know that he is no longer in pain and now breathing freely. Our love and adoration for him will live in our hearts forever. The family will receive relatives and friends at the CO-OPERATIVE FUNERAL HOME, 222 Lasalle Blvd, (at Notre-Dame), Sudbury on Thursday October 30th, 2008 from 8:30-10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. at St-Jean de Brébeuf Church, Sudbury. JENKINS, Ella Joyce Passed away peacefully at McMaster Hospital on Friday, October 24, 2008 in her 84th year. Mom was born in Florence, Cape Breton Nova Scotia on March 28, 1930 and moved to Welland in February 1948 to be with Dad as he was here searching for work. During her work career she blessed the halls of the old hospital, Brights canning factory and Stelco, but the position she loved most was pharmacy technician at Welland Medical Pharmacy where she remained until her retirement. Mom is a member of Newlife Fellowship in St Catharines and was very active in a program for single parents and their children and she enjoyed kitchen duty. A long standing member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 4, she was a member of the ladies auxiliary and shared many stories of the fun and hard work that they are involved in. Mom loved the Toronto Blue Jays and the Toronto Maple Leafs, who she believes will win the Stanley Cup this year (what faith!!!) We invite you to join in the celebration of our mother's life to be held at the WELLAND FUNERAL HOME 827 East Main Street Welland on Monday from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm. MARTIN, Professor Charles Burton Professor Charles Burton Martin, beloved husband of Olga Borysuk Martin of Medicine Hat, passed away peacefully at the Sunnyside Nursing Home on Thursday, October 23, 2008, at the age of 84 years. Charlie also leaves to cherish his memory his children: Anne Marie Martin, Karen Elizabeth Martin-Cussen, Rosemary Eleaner Martin all of Australia, Shelly (Robert) Hykawy of Medicine Hat, Victor (Lorrie) Palanyk of Australia, Kim (Bob) Crozier of Medicine Hat and Moose Jaw and Cassandra Palanyk of Haiti; twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; his respected friends and colleagues, John Heil of the U.S. and David Armstrong of Australia as well as numerous others. He was predeceased by his parents Dorothy and Harold Martin, his daughter Pam Martin and one granddaughter. Charles Burton Martin, affectionately known to his friends and colleagues as "Charlie", was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts. He graduated B.A. with distinction in Philosophy at Boston University, from whence he proceeded to Emmanuel College, Cambridge as a Ph.D. student and also attended lectures at Oxford. In 1954 he lectured at the University of Adelaide and was quickly promoted to Senior Lecturer and later Reader. From 1966 to 1971 he was Professor of Philosophy at the University of Sydney. In 1971 he became Professor of Philosophy at the University of Calgary and gave his last lecture and retired at the age of seventy-seven in 2001. He has held visiting professorships at Harvard four times, at Columbia twice and the Universities of Michigan and Rochester once each. Husband, father, professor Charlie was a man filled with passion and it overflowed with abundance in everything he did. It could be very basic or just pure mind blowing! Life was something you lived and was something "you do". Fear was not an option, fear has no boundaries. His laugh was a roar that bellowed from his heart and was infectious and a privilege to have heard it. That everlasting feeling we never forget. Charlie had always been a heavily built man. He played American football and had a strong love for boxing. Ping pong was another passion, once taking on the world's Japanese champion and much to his surprise almost beat him. Charlie had been given many talents and he used every one of them with enthusiasm, love and challenges. Whether he was enlisting in the army or playing his clarinet, and performing with the Boston Pop Orchestra under the conductor Fiedler. He is a self-taught sculptor, artist and poetry writer. Dad's sense of adventure was an everyday event. He was a strong swimmer, thrashing about in various oceans, climbing mountains or battling the elements for something as simple as bringing back ice cream for his children. He delighted in the beauty of nature and animals, even the smallest of insects if retrieved were to be released back into the environment to experience freedom - something he believed human or creature deserved. The Robin and the Shark were favourite memories for him which he shared regularly right to the last days of his precious life. Charlie had many acquaintances, a quick wave from Princess Di or high tea with the Archbishop of Canterbury, he bypassed the opportunity to be a future world leader; lead by Henry Kisinger. Charlie's favourite place was cooking gourmet meals in the kitchen for family and friends. Watching with great delight, the happy faces surrounding his table partaking mouth watering cuisine. Of course the table settings were treasures he had found displayed with antique dishes, glasses and flatware. Travel was an integral part of Charlie and Olga's lives. Sabbatical professorships took them both from country to country. He was especially fond of England's architecture, people and history. There home began to fill with treasures from all around the world, each piece was appreciated and displayed in perfect places for all to admire. Artifacts, books, or pieces of paper were positioned and became rooted which no one disturbed and so they stay until this very day. According to dad the New York Times was the best newspaper to read; this was one of his weekly pleasures while dwelling at Sunnyside. If a family member was not able to bring the paper, special deliveries were made by companies of taxi drivers. "You cannot live another day without perusing the New York Times." While residing at Sunnyside from his bed, he researched and wrote his last book "The Mind in Nature." His personal choice for the dust cover was a picture of all the planets and stars the naked eye could see. This was the book philosophers of the twenty-first century were itching to be completed, read and teach for generations to come. "Einstein never knew he'd be challenged in this lifetime." Charlie has instilled the strength to be alone and the ability to value life - however long it lasted and what ever trials it held. Charlie has taught us that death can be peaceful for a wounded creature or as a person who had lived as fully as he could in the eighty-four years time God gave to him. Charlie (dad) will be an irreplaceable loss to the philosophical world but more than that he will be irreplaceable as a husband, father and friend forever in all our hearts. Our family would like to give honourable mention to the staff, past and present, at Sunnyside Nursing Home for their ongoing kindness, care, compassion and support. Also thank you to Dr. Wong for his support and diligence, human comfort and rapport he had with dad.
