BIGRAS-PREDON, Carmen (née Lanthier) - The family announces with sorrow, her death in Sudbury, Thursday, June 12th, 2008 at the age of 73 years. Daughter of the late Adelard and of the late Irène (née Kingsley) Lanthier. Wife of the late Réal Bigras and of the late Joseph Predon. Beloved mother of Norm Bigras (Francine) of Azilda, Michel Bigras of Ottawa and stepmother of Michel Predon of Webbwood and Robert Predon of Hanmer. Dear sister of Yolande Gareau (late Archille) of Sudbury. Predeceased by her sisters Raymonde Carey (late Gerard), Rachelle Routhier (late Conrad) and by her brother Ronald Lanthier (Diane of Sudbury). Sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her granddaughter Tina Bigras (Barry Wilson) of Sudbury. Prior to retirement, Carmen was a hairdresser. Her good character and the kindness of her heart won the affection of her loving family and all who knew her. She was an avid bingo and casino player who also enjoyed playing cards. WESSEL, Jean - After a brief illness at the NHS-General Site on Wednesday, June 11, 2008, in her 88th year. Jean was born on March 9, 1921 and grew up in Rockway on the family farm on Wessel Drive. She is survived by her sister-in-law Emma Annabel Wessel, nieces and nephews John Wessel, Lynne Jaques (Ed), Grant Wessel (Peggy) and Ann Wessel and great nieces and nephews Bryan Wessel, Dawn Van Ness (Clayton), Scott Jaques (Kim) and Gavin Jaques. Jean is predeceased by her brother Roger Wessel and parents William and Pearl Wessel (nee Garner). She served in World War II in the Royal Canadian Air Force as Leading Air Force Woman Motor Transport Driver, stationed in Saskatchewan. She worked for Playtime Stores in the office for C.F. Jones. CARUSETTA, Joseph F. - Passed away peacefully at the home of his daughter, Edie, on Monday June 9, 2008 in his 85th year. He was predeceased by his wife Verna in 1995 and will always be missed by daughters Jo Ann (Torok) St. Catharines, Andrea (Blaut) Arizona, Cathy (Vanderlaan) Fonthill, Edie (Pett) Fonthill and Chris (Millejours) British Columbia; sons Joseph (St. Catharines) and Frank (Honduras); grandchildren Julie, Jamie, Jay, Bethany, Annie, Shaun, Mitchell, Kaitlynn, Kiarra, Nastassja and Francesca, as well as great grandchildren Marc, Matthew, Cole, Tate, Breanna and Abigail. Dad, along with his brothers Attilio, Louis and Aldo established and operated the Rex Hotel, on King Street in Welland for over 50 years and were the first to bring Italian pizza to the area. Many will remember him as the bartender in the Crown Room where he worked for until his retirement. He also operated paint and wall paper businesses under the name The Home Improvement Center. Dad was an avid golfer and enjoyed many good times playing with friends at local golf courses. Our sincere thanks to Dr. Hartman and Nora for their special care, to the staff at We Care, for their compassion and to all the staff at the Chartwell Select Retirement Home for taking such good care of our dad. At his request cremation has taken place. A celebration of Dad's life will take place on Thursday, July 10th in the Rex Hotel dining room from 4-7 pm with family tributes at 6:00. MERZETTI, HERMAN JOSEPH 'LARRY' - June 21, 1923 - April 25, 2008) - Passed away peacefully on Friday April 25th, 2008 at North Bay General Hospital at the age of 84 years, with his family by his side. Dear son of the late Herman Joseph Merzetti and Laura Merzetti (Hansen). Larry was the much loved father of Susan Mickle of Markham, Angela Tomsic (Gene) of Markham, Joe Merzetti of Toronto and Laura Merzetti (Rob) of Ajax. Grandchildren, Steaven, Chandra, Philip, Connor, and three great-grandchildren. Survived by sister, Dorothy (Dot) O'Reilly, brothers, Bob (Joanne), and Paul (Barb) all of New Brunswick. Predeceased by his sibling,s Mary Ellsworth, Ada Paschal, Jim, Don and David, all of New Brunswick. Also lovingly remembered by his many cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends in Canada, Germany and Italy. Predeceased by his wife, Loraine Merzetti (nee Keenan) of Oshawa, in 1997. Larry was born June 21st, 1923 in Saint John, New Brunswick and graduated from UNB in 1944 with a degree in Engineering. He relocated to Ontario where he met and married Loraine and raised his family. He was an avid writer, reader, traveller, wood-worker, story-teller, and music-lover. He cherished his independence to the end. Libraries were his church wherever Larry found himself in the world. His professional career began with Hill-Clark-Francis in New Liskeard and ended four decades later with Critchley & Delean in North Bay. Some of his accomplishments included work on the North Bay General Hospital, the North Bay Court House, West Ferris Secondary School and the Timmins Daily Press. He embraced his work with a passion and always got the job done. Larry retired in the early 90's and spent his retirement years in North Bay, in an area of the world he truly loved. A private service was held for the family on Saturday April 26th 2008 at McGUINTY FUNERAL HOME, North Bay. Cremation to follow. Special thanks to Drs. Spencer, Shemilt & Shulman as well as all the wonderful nursing staff on 4W who looked after our father with such great care. Avis de décès mme marguerite brunet-filion (1913 - 2008) À Gatineau, au CHVO, le 10 juin 2008, à l'âge de 95 ans, Marguerite Filion, épouse de feu Gérard Filion et fille de feu Alexandre Brunet et de feu Éléonore Séguin est décédée. Elle était la cadette de 14 enfants, tous déjà disparus. Ses frères: Wilfrid, Omer, Ernest et Alexandre. Ses soeurs: Yvonne (sr. Marguerite-Marie), Marianne (Bissonnette), Élisabeth (Lévesque), Laura (Secours), Fidélia (Beaulieu) et 4 enfants décédés en bas âge. Elle laisse dans le deuil de nombreux neveux, nièces et amis. Following retirement Calder and Mary spent many winters in Bradenton, Florida and summers in Ottawa with their many friends as will as travelling extensively. OBITUARY MARY PATRICIA WILLIAMS Mary Patricia McCaig Williams passed away on June 7, 2008 in Brockville. She was born and raised in Montreal and is the daughter of the late John McCaig and Rosina Hagen. Her early education took place in Hochelaga Convent, and she received her Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees from Marianopolis College in 1947 and 1949 respectively. She began her teaching career at the age of twenty in Montreal and moved to various parts of Quebec and Ontario throughout the 1950s and 1960s. In the 1970s she settled in the Brockville area to continue her teaching and raise a family. Throughout her life she was a devoted pianist, organist, translator, tutor, poet, and enjoyed a challenging cryptic crossword puzzle, and always made time for a good game of bridge. She was a devout Roman Catholic and bore an intense passion for music and languages. Her life was indeed an adventure and a celebration of the human need for communication and intellect. She is survived by her loyal and loving son, Robert, her younger sister Irene Theresa, and by her younger brother, Hank Bernard. Predeceased by older brother John Francis. A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, June 17, 2008 at 11 a.m. in St. Ann's Parish, 230 Main St. W., Merrickville, followed by interment in the parish cemetery. Rev. Ronald Tennyson Sabine, Sr. Rev. Ronald T. Sabine, Sr., 91, died peacefully Wednesday afternoon, June 11, 2008, surrounded by members of his loving family. With his wife by his side, Rev. Sabine ministered to his congregations, taught school for more than 50 years and was active in local and civic affairs. He was dedicated in his drive, integrity and caring for parishioners, students and community. He was married to the late Lulia "Lu" Bessie (Ryder) Sabine for 59 years, who predeceased him in 2004. He is survived by his son, Ronald T. Jr. and his wife Linda of Moncton; three daughters, Elizabeth L. Sabine of Calais, VT, Cheryl A. Ross and her husband Gregory of Brampton, ON, and Pamela L. Sabine and her husband Gary Racine of Salisbury. He also leaves his grandchildren, Ronald T. III and Sarah L. Sabine, Paul T. "PJ" and Trevor B. Reinhardt, Brian J. T. and Lindsay P. Ross. His two brothers, John F. and Rev. Ralph L. Sabine predeceased him. He is survived by their wives, Winifred Sabine of Perth-Andover and Mary Sabine of Somersworth, NH. He loved and was deeply loved by his family. We honor and miss you this Father's Day. Born in Port Maitland, NS, he was the son of the late Rev. Leonard T. and Laura F. (Boyd) Sabine. He attended a number of grammar schools as his father moved throughout the Maritimes and Maine as a minister. A graduate of Fredericton High School, he went on to receive his teacher certification from the Provincial Normal School (1935). He graduated from Eastern Nazarene College (Quincy, MA) receiving his B.A. (1943) and B.Th. (1944) degrees. In 1945, he and his brother Ralph were both ordained as ministers at Beulah Camp, with the honor of having their father perform the ordination. Later, when two daughters were attending college, he graduated from McGill University earning his B.Divinity degree (1966). In 1974 he earned his B.Ed. degree from the University of Moncton. He began teaching in the rural Woodstock area and his first rural church was the Reformed Baptist Church in Salem, Killam's Mills, NB circuit, where he also taught grades 1-9 in a one-room schoolhouse. It was in Salem, where he met and married his wife Lu on January 29, 1945. His next assignment was the Havelock RB Church, NS, followed by the Seal Cove RB Church in Seal Cove, Grand Manan, NB. Rev. Sabine transferred to the Church of the Nazarene denomination in Trenton, NS. He was a high school teacher/vice principal in Brookfield, NS; Three Rivers, Quebec City, McMasterville, and Longueuil, QC. He served Methodist Churches in the Whitefield Parish, NH, Bradford Parish and Plainfield Parish, VT, and Granville Parish, NY. He returned to the Maritimes teaching in Hillsborough and at the time of his retirement he was a teacher at Harrison Trimble High School, Moncton, NB. During these latter years as a minister of the United Church of Canada, he served churches in Alma, West River, Hopewell Hill, Riverside-Albert and Hillsborough, NB. During his tenure as a minister, he combined teaching with ministerial duties and served the Conference in capacities of College Board, Home Mission Board, Statistician, Youth President and President of Ministerial Associations. He was recommended to Who's Who in Religion in America. He served in the Gideons and Rotary Clubs. He was an officer in the Cadet Services of Canada, served as a Cubmaster and Scoutmaster, played collegiate hockey and basketball, coached high school hockey, and was a political activist. He and his wife Lu sang musical duets in their churches. His avocations included music, playing hockey, genealogy, reading, golfing, and he was a lifelong "sports enthusiast". THOMSON, James (Jim) James (Jim) Thomson passed away peacefully on June 12, 2008 at the age of 82 years with his children holding his hand. Jim was born in Olds and raised on a farm west of town in the Hainstock district to Scottish immigrants John and Alice of Ayrshire, Scotland. In his youth, Jim loved working on the farm, especially during the fall harvest trying to keep up with his two older brothers. Like many young men of his generation, he enlisted into the Royal Canadian Navy, Air Arm Division and served from June 6, 1944 to May 1946. Jim was stationed at Watford, England for navel training before being assigned to the 825 Squadron as an aircraft mechanic for the Supermarine Seafire and Sea Hurricane fighter planes on Canada's HMCS Warrior aircraft carrier. Upon returning from naval service, Jim farmed for two years before joining the County of Mountain View for seven years building roads. In 1957, Jim joined the Home Oil Company until his retirement in 1986, with assignments in Sundre, Hardisty, Swan Hills, Edmonton and Calgary. Jim's most memorable years at Home Oil were working at the Hardisty Underground Storage Facility for sixteen years as Plant Superintendent. Jim was an avid curler and was a founding member of the Hardisty East Central Oilmen's curling bonspiel and an active member of the Hardisty Masonic Lodge. In addition, he loved his Mossend Black Angus cattle herd that he named after the Scottish family farm near Ayr, Scotland. During his retirement years, Jim spent countless hours working on his 141 acre farm west of Olds that he purchased in 1989, the same land his father bought in 1948. He participated in the Alberta Senior games for numerous years and loved to play Frisbee golf. He made numerous trips to the UK and Israel and even went to Cuba in 2006. Jim loved to work on historic projects from mapping out the cart trails in the Olds district; participating in the David Thompson Exploration reunion and working on the Hainstock history book. He played a key role in keeping the Scottish and Canadian families connected. He loved playing cribbage and bridge a couple of times a week and was always wanting to share a bottle of his legendary homemade wine. Jim will be remembered as an amazing people person who was full of energy, loved cooking large meals for his family and treasured his farming background. Jim was predeceased by his parents Alice in 1976 and John in 1978, sister Effie Platt in 1985 and brother Jack in 2003. Jim is survived by his six children Beverly (Dana) Krause of Calgary; Alan (Sa) of Edmonton; Karen (Garth) Riley of Red Deer; Margaret (Hertzl) Yehoshua of Pharan, Israel; Mark (Suzanne) of Fort McMurray; and Kirk (Brenda) of Calgary; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; ex-wife Mary Anne Thomson; brother Wylie and sister Agnes Yewell both of Olds. Special thanks go to the staff of the Olds Hospital for their exceptional care and to the Olds RCMP personnel for their professional conduct. A Celebration of Jim's Life will be on Tuesday, June 17 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Olds & District Evergreen Centre, 5237 - 52 Street, Olds.
