FRAIN, George William. George William Frain was born February 16, 1926 in Halifax, N.S. He passed away amongst family on May 11, 2008 at Peace Arch Hospital. He fought valiantly but in the end succumbed peacefully. The family would like to thank the "angels" of the palliative care ward; without you his end would not have been so sweet. CAIRNES, Patricia "Pat" (nee Larkin) January 8, 1927 - May 12, 2008 Patricia "Pat" Cairnes of Calgary, passed away on May 12, 2008 at the age of 81 years. Born in London, England. Patricia, having survived "The Blitz" would become a war bride. She met Courtney during WWII and followed him to Calgary after his return. In addition to raising her own family, Patricia was a foster-parent to nine children over a five or six year period. Patricia is survived by: sons, Michael (Jackie) of Leduc; Gerry (Naznin) of Houston, Texas; daughter Regan of Calgary; two grandsons; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Olive, Peggy and Shirley. GIULIANI, Fernande (Fern) (nee Parent) November 24, 1924 - May 13, 2008 Fernande (Fern) Giuliani (nee Parent) of Calgary, passed away on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at the age of 83 years. Fern was born in Manitoba. She graduated from nursing school at St. Rose, MB and nursed in Calgary at the Holy Cross Hospital for seventeen years. Fern will be remembered for her kindness to others. Fern is survived by her three sisters, Angele of Edmonton, Jeannine (Rene) of Winnipeg, and Lorraine (John) also of Winnipeg. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Fern was predeceased by her husband Aniceto, her sister Juliette McNair, and her two brothers, Roger and Lionel Parent. KISSEL, Michael - At Bluewater Health, Mitton Site, on Sunday, May 11, 2008, Michael died peacefully with family present at the age of 90. Beloved husband of Anne (Wogzyn). Loving father of Leslie Anne and her husband Charles, Raymond and his wife Cathy, and Gerald. Proud grandfather of James, Alexander and Catherine Anne. Michael was the son of Elia Kisil and Anna Madgiak and the brother of Jean, Joseph (predeceased), and Mary and was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. After training as a machinist, Michael joined the Royal Canadian Navy where he served for four years during WWII in the North Atlantic on convoy duty and continued serving in the Reserves. He was granted his mechanical engineering degree at the University of Manitoba and completed additional studies in engineering at the University of Windsor. As a registered professional he worked for Imperial Oil in Regina, Sarnia and Fort McMurray. Michael was a dedicated member of St. George's Ukrainian Catholic Church. He was a supporter of a wide number of causes, a generous helper of those in need, an avid gardener, an accomplished woodworker and lover of pets. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Fr. BARRON, Robert H. November 29, 1916 - May 15, 2008 Robert H. Barron, Q.C., passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 15, 2008 at the age of 91. Robert was born at home on Elbow Drive on November 29, 1916 and remained a proud Calgarian throughout his life. Robert's father, Jacob, a lawyer, theatrical impresario and inventor, and his mother, an accomplished concert pianist and philanthropist, raised him in a culturally vibrant home. Robert had a brilliant and inquiring mind and excelled in all his pursuits. He achieved 100% in Grade 12 math and physics. If it had not been for the Depression, he likely would have followed his love of the stars and become an astronomer. Robert's uncle, Samuel Helman, K.C., recognized his potential as a lawyer and assisted him in attending law school at the University of Alberta at the age of nineteen. Robert achieved the highest honours of his law school graduating class of 1938: the Chief Justice's Gold Medal in Law, the Carswell Prize for Third-Year Law Students, and the National Trust Prize in Law. Edward Bredin, Q.C., surviving member of the Law Class, remained a lifelong friend. Robert volunteered to serve in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Flight Lieutenant from 1941 to 1945 where he served as a navigation instructor. He trained navigators from the Commonwealth, as well as France and Poland. Robert's impressive law career spanned sixty-four years. He commenced practice with his Uncle Sam's firm, primarily as a civil litigator, representing clients at all levels of Court, including the Supreme Court of Canada on numerous occasions and the Privy Council in London (one of the last appeals allowed from Canada). One of his precedent setting cases was Bennett and White (Calgary) Ltd. v. Municipal Districts of Sugar City No. 5, in which, in May 1951, he appealed a Supreme Court of Canada decision to the Privy Council, and won. Another notable win, Bell v. Klein, in which he appeared at the B.C. Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada on dozens of occasions, is studied in law schools to the present day. Robert also believed strongly in the principle of pro bono work and never turned down a worthy cause for lack of funds. He also inspired three of his daughters to follow his footsteps in law. Robert single-handedly took on the CPR to prevent the devastation of downtown Calgary by their plans to lay tracks along the banks of the Bow River. He was the first non-elected official to be invited to examine witnesses on the floor of the Provincial Legislature. He also lent support to his classmate Ruth Gorman in acting for the Hobema people in establishing their first nations' rights. He was involved in numerous other civic causes, including daylight savings time, fluoridation and politics in general. He was also a member of the Royal Astronomical Society and the Society of Alberta Sceptics. Robert was an ardent Zionist and proud of his Jewish heritage. He served his community in numerous capacities. Notably, he was President of the Calgary Hebrew School for many years and he was honorary director and legal counsel of the Chevra Kadisha of Calgary. He travelled to Israel on numerous occasions alone, with Cleo and with his entire family. Robert's family was most important to him. In May 1956, Robert when speaking at a Zionist convention in Calgary, met a delegate from Junior Hadassah visiting from Edmonton, and fell instantly in love with his Cleoanne. Within a month, they were married. Their affair continued for fifty-two years. Robert was an involved parent to his six beloved children. The family often travelled with all six children, at home and abroad. Robert, as an older father than most, was able to bless his six children with the benefit of his incredible wisdom and knowledge of the world. For twenty-five years he lived with his family at Pine Creek Ranch, where his son Daniel was his greatest helpmate and companion. The greatest achievement of all, Robert saved for the last seven years of his life. After heart surgery, he suffered numerous setbacks. He persevered in order "to spend as many years as possible with my grandchildren". His humility and self-sacrifice has strengthened all of his loving family. We are forever grateful to our most dearly beloved husband, brother, father, and grandfather. Robert is survived by his beloved wife of fifty-two years, Cleoanne, his dear brother, Richard (Jean) Barron and his six loving children, Deborah, Elaine, Daniel, Tamara (Ben Karmel), Joshua and Jacqueline (Peter Ridout), and his seven loving grandchildren, Jeffrey, Gidon, Ariela, Noa, Elizabeth, Samuel and Amelia, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by his parents, Jacob Bell Barron and Amelia Barron and his brother, William Barron. SEDLAR, Father Daniel A. - 1927-2008 - On May 13th we learned with sadness of the death of our confrere Father Daniel Sedlar. He arrived in the Diocese of Timmins in 1980. He began as Assistant Priest at Holy Name Parish in Kirkland Lake (1980-1987) and Administrator of Holy Trinity Parish in Englehart (1983-1987). From 1987-1990 he was Parish Priest of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Parish in New Liskeard. During the six years that followed (1990-1996) he was responsible for Sacred Heart Parish in Timmins and for one year, (1991-1992), Administrator of Saint Joachim Parish in South Porcupine. He retired to Ottawa in 1996 and in 2004 returned to his homeland in Ljubjana. Our memory of Father Sedlar is that of a deeply human, gentle and loving man who was devoted to his ministry. Together, let us thank God for the extraordinary gift that Father Sedlar was for all of us and for his pastoral ministry that was accomplished with joy and generosity. GAUTHIER, Evelyn Grace With great sadness the family of Grace Gauthier announce she passed away peacefully May 12, 2008. Grace was the daughter of Anna and Emanual Herman of Delia. She grew up on the farm and attended high school in Drumheller. Grace had many fond memories of farm life and then living in the dormitory to attend high school. She was a graduate of the Royal Alexandra Hospital School of Nursing in Edmonton and she treasured her affiliation there throughout her life. In 2007 Grace attended her sixtieth nursing reunion in Edmonton. She worked for a short time at the Colonel Belcher Veterans' Hospital prior to her marriage to Charles (Chuck) Gauthier in 1948. Grace was predeceased by Chuck in 1993. She lived most of her life in Calgary but was always interested in the world and enjoyed traveling to many places as far away as Thailand. Home, family and friends were of the utmost importance to Grace. She spent most of her final days with visitors in her home and on the phone. Grace truly appreciated each and every visitor and was sincerely touched by the attention paid to her. Those who knew her have said they were inspired by her courage, determination and positive outlook. Grace will always be missed by her children: Sharon Gauthier of Calgary and Dr. Charles Gauthier (Karen Thomas) of Banff; her grandchildren Carissa (Schaane) Cameron of Tennessee, Lisa Wenger (Travis Lucier) of Airdrie and Kate Gauthier of Banff; her great-grandchildren Marquell, Hannah, Emma Joy, and Amaris Cameron; her brothers Albert (Anne) Herman and Don (Joan) Herman both of Drumheller, and many extended family and friends. Suzanne Vallée - À Montréal le 17 mars 2008 est décédée à l’âge de 76 ans Dame SUZANNE VALLÉE domiciliée à Montréal et auparavant à Thetford Mines. Elle était la fille de feu Napoléon Vallée et de feu Rose-Anna Bilodeau, la soeur de feu Roland Vallée époux de Madeleine Lambert, Armande Vallée, Gertrude Vallée épouse de feu Claude Corbeil, Léopold Vallée époux de Flora Gardner, feu Jean-Denis Vallée époux de feu Margaret Byrns et de feu Daniel Vallée. Elle laisse également ses neveux et nièces. La famille recevra les condoléances vendredi le 23 mai à compter de 13h à la Résidence funéraire Gamache & Nadeau ltée 590, rue St-Alphonse Sud, Thetford Mines. Le service religieux sera célébré vendredi le 23 mai à 14h en l’église St-Alphonse de Thetford. Pepin, Jean-Louis - À Drummondville, le dimanche 11 mai 2008 est décédé à l'âge de 74 ans M. Jean-Louis Pepin, fils de feu Oscar Pepin et de feu Alice Cossette demeurant à Saint-Cyrille-de-Wendover. GRZYBOWSKI, Frances (nee Ostrowski) - After a brief and unexpected illness, Frances Grzybowski loving mother of Kathleen, Andrea and Jamie, passed away on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at the young age of 54, surrounded by her loving family and friends. Frances was a remarkable woman full of grace and love who brightened all whose lives she touched. She will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her family and many close friends. HACKBORN, Kenneth Martin - Born January 30, 1933, passed away peacefully May 13, 2008 in his 76th year. Predeceased by wife Evelyn Hackborn (June 2007), son Ron Hackborn and stepsons Robert and Dennis Franklin. Survived by Wendy and Shaun Davis (Tanya, Stephen) of Calgary, Martin and Shelley Hackborn (Carly, Eric, Sarah, Darryl) of Cambridge, Jean Hackborn of Calgary, Stepdaughters Loretta “Lori” Hillis (Amanda, Michelle, Candice), Teresa Franklin (Aaron, Alyssa), Patti and Dan Roy (Joseph, André) and stepson Doug Franklin (Sarah, Alexandra) all of Cambridge and great grandfather to 6. Brother of Sylvia and Joe Miller of Burford and Beverly Atkinson of Brantford. Ken enjoyed making ice cream floats for his grandchildren. In his younger years he worked as a bartender at both the Royal and Iroquois Hotels. He was a dedicated employee often working 7 days a week at Canadian General Tower for over 40 years. He was actively involved with the Knights of Columbus and Navy Club where he enjoyed playing cards and crib. Ken loved to socialize and was often the life of the party. Ken also enjoyed hockey and golf in his retirement years and was very proud of his ‘Hole in One' Resting at CORBETT FUNERAL HOME, 95 Dundas Street, Cambridge where the family will receive friends on Tuesday May 20, 2008 from 2-4 pm. and 7-9 pm.
