SIDER, Pauline - peacefully went to be with the Lord at Hospice Niagara on Monday October 29, 2007. Pauline Sider, wife of the late Claude Sider (1988) and loving mother of Roger (Joann), Neil (Mary), Keith (Heb) and Daryl (Darlene). Dear sister of Dorothy Sibbald, Leata Thompson, Shirley (Howard) Adams, Margaretta Ruegg, Arnold (Betty) Marr, Bob (Karen) Marr and Doug (Diane) Marr. Also survived by 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Predeceased by her sister Nelda Climenhaga. HERMOLIN, Rheta-Helen (nee Fischman) At Humber River Regional Hospital, October 27, at the age of sixty-eight years. Devoted daughter of the late Samson and Anna Fischman; adored sister of Sheila Fischman (Donald Winkler) and Marilyn Fischman (Robert Lewis); beloved companion of Octavio Gonzalez. A graduate of the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Toronto, 1964, she was a member of the Pharmacy Department at Toronto East General Hospital for fourteen years, retiring in 2003. We are grateful to the medical and nursing staff in the respiratory ICU at Humber River Regional Hospital for their superb and compassionate care. A memorial service will be held in the Music Room at Hart House, Sunday, November 4, at 2 p.m. Donations may be made to Amnesty International or to the Elgin and Area Heritage Society, P.O. This is to have succeeded." The young mother set her foot on the path of life. "Is this the long way?" she asked. And the guide said, "Yes, and the way is hard. And you will be old before you reach the end of it. But the end will be better than the beginning. But the young mother was happy, and she would not believe that anything could be better than these years. So she played with her children, she fed them and bathed them and taught them how to tie their shoes and ride a bike and reminded them to feed the dog & cat and do their homework and brush their teeth. The sun shone on them and the young Mother cried, "Nothing will ever be lovelier than this." Then the nights came and the storms and the path was sometimes dark, and the children shook with fear and cold, and the Mother drew them close and covered them with her arms, and the children said, "Mother, we are not afraid, for you are near, and no harm can come." And the morning came and there was a hill ahead, and the children climbed and grew weary, and the Mother was weary. But at all times she said to the children," A little patience and we are there." So the children climbed and as they climbed they learned to weather the storms. And with this she gave them strength to face the world. Year after year, she showed them compassion, understanding, hope, but most of all, unconditional love. And when they reached the top they said, "Mother we would not have done it without you." The days went on, and the weeks and the months and the years and the Mother grew old and she became little and bent. But her children were tall and strong and walked with courage. And the Mother, when she lay down at night, looked up at the stars and said, "This is a better day than the last, for my children have learned so much and are now passing these traits on to their children." And when the way became rough for her, they lifted her and gave her their strength, just as she had given them hers. One day they came to a hill, and beyond the hill, they could see a shining road and golden gates flung wide. And the Mother said, "I have reached the end of my journey. And now I know the end is better than the beginning, for my children can walk with dignity and pride, with their heads held high, and so can their children after them." And the children said, "You will always walk with us Mother, even when you have gone through the gates." And they stood and watched her as she went on alone, and the gates closed after her. LOVO, Kenneth (Ken, Kenny) Russell February 3, 1921 - October 28, 2007 Kenneth Russell Lovo, beloved husband of the late Rosie Lovo of Calgary, passed away on Sunday, October 28, 2007 at the age of 86 years. Ken was born near Glentworth, SK where he lived until his teen years, subsequently residing in Woodrow, SK where he soon met his soulmate, Rosie Crooks. They were married in 1942. He was stationed in the Air Force during the war and then moved to Kincaid, SK until 1964, when Calgary became home. He was a brilliant mechanic and had a wonderful sense of humour. He loved playing the piano, singing hymns and love songs, making powerful speeches at weddings and family reunions, building eleven grandfather clocks for his loved ones, but more than anything, Ken loved his family and friends with every ounce of his being. He will be sorely missed. Ken is lovingly remembered by his two sons, Russ Lovo of Lafleche, SK, Glen Lovo of Lafleche, SK; his daughter Vivian Lovo and her fiance Rick Berkley of Calgary, AB; ten grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his five sisters, Ethel, Vera, Florence, Norma and Hazel; and his brother Bob. Ken was predeceased by his beloved wife and soulmate, Rosie; his daughter Dawnna; his daughter-in-law Linda; his mother and father, Grace and Olaf; his sisters Helen and Fern; and his brothers Calvin and Don. JOHNSTON Gordon Rae - It is with great sadness that the family of Gordon announce his passing on Friday, October 26, 2007 in his 81st year at the Welland General Hospital after a brief illness. Gord was the loving husband of the late Marion Johnston (Morden), 2005. Always remembered and forever in the hearts of his daughters Doreen Murdock (Philip), Ann Johnston and son Gordie Johnston. Lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Paula (Rob), Carol, Brenda (Carlos), Stephanie (Jim) and Sean (Jodi) and great-grandchildren Jaymz, Randi-Leigh, Jordan, Alexius, Kyla, Madison, Shane, Marques, Olivia and Sabrina. He will be sadly missed by his sister Etta Farr and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents Dora and William Johnston, his brothers Walter and Bill and sisters Annie and Elaine. Gord worked as a hammersmith at Canada Forge until he became co-owner of Port Colborne Forge working there until his retirement. An avid outdoorsman he loved to fish and hunt. He took his last big hunting trip with his grandson Sean just two weeks ago. NORMAN SINCLAIR - 1920-2007 - Passed away at K-W Health Centre of Grand River Hospital, on Monday, October 29, 2007, at age 87. Born in Welland, Ontario, Norm joined the RCAF in 1941 serving as a Hurricane fighter pilot in Scotland, and a dive bomber pilot with 82 Squadron in India from 1943-1945.He is a holder of the Burma Star. He returned to Canada and attended McMaster University and re-enlisted in 1952. After serving 20 years in the Air Force, he retired to become a teacher at St. David's in Waterloo and finally, at Brisbane Public School in Erin. BOYD, Kathleen "Kay" Olive June (nee Fehr) Passed away Friday, October 26, 2007. She will be missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her children, Lawrence Milner, Marvin Milner (Marilyn), Louise Milner (Jack), Debbie Morris and Corey (Nga) Morris; grandchildren, Raina, Julia, Leon and Christopher; and her great-granddaughter, Marissa. She was predeceased by her parents, Peter and Ada Fehr and her husband, Buster (Gerald) Boyd. Kay was an adventuress, mother, daughter, wife, camp cook, caterer, bookkeeper, life long learner, student and way back, a switchboard receptionist at Shell Canada and the Banff Springs Hotel. For many years, Kay was a member of First Baptist Church and later Bowness Baptist. She will be remembered for her terrific sense of humor and the wonderful concoctions she created in her kitchen. CROWE, Thomas E. (Tim) February 13, 1917 - October 28, 2007 Tim Crowe, beloved husband of Mary of Calgary, passed away on Sunday, October 28, 2007 at the age of 90 years. Tim was born on February 13, 1917 to Edwin and Jesse Crowe at Marquis, Saskatchewan, Tim attended school in Kindersley and Saskatoon. Tim served in the Canadian Naval Services as a Chief Petty Officer from June 1942 to October 1945. After the war he returned to Saskatoon and began his career working for the General Automotive Supply as a Machinist, until 1947 when he moved to Calgary and wed Mary in March, 1948. Tim and Mary made their home in the community of Lynnwood/Ogden in 1956 and were long-time residents at Carefree Resort. Tim worked at CPR Ogden Shops as a journeyman machinist until his retirement, he was a life member of the Machinist and Aerospace Union Lodge No. 345, Alberta Horseshoe Association, and the Royal Canadian Legion No. 154. Tim's passion was his music. His happiest times were spent playing with his band "The Drifters" and later "The Drifters 4". Often referred to as "Mr. Fixit" for his home repair talents, you could call on Tim anytime. He loved golfing, fishing, camping, painting, gardening, and horseshoes. Tim was fondly known as Grampa Crowe, who always had a story to tell and always took the time to listen to ours. Grampa Crowe's good nature greatly influenced the lives of those closest to him, and he will be missed dearly, by all who knew and loved him. Tim is survived by his wife Mary; his brother-in-law Robert "Beck" Van Impe; his nieces, Linda and Susan; and his nephews, Gary and Harry and their children; also his best friend Tippy and many close friends. Interment will be held at Queen's Park Cemetery (4 Street and 31 Avenue N.W.) today, November 1, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. Following the Interment friends are invited to gather at 2:00 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion No. 154 Ogden Branch (2625 - 78 Avenue S.E.). KORSTANJE, Hubert - On Saturday October 27, 2007, after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family Hubert Korstanje went to be with the Lord. Hubert was born in Driewegen, Zeeland, The Netherlands on April 24, 1919 to Andries and Jobje Korstanje. He served in the Royal Netherlands Army in the Dutch East Indies and survived the WWII Japanese prisoner of war camps on The Thai Burma Railway. Hubert was a retiree of Dow Chemical and a member of Trinity Anglican Church in Sarnia. Beloved husband of Grace Korstanje. Loving father to Joan (Ken Silk), Andre (Susan), Henry, Bill (Octavienne), Linda (Mike McClintock), Judy and Tim (Nancy Cardinal). COLLETT, Raymond Bernard - of Keswick, Ontario. Formerly a resident of Lakefield, Ontario. Passed away peacefully on Friday, October 26, 2007 at the South Lake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket, Ontario, in his 96th year. Beloved husband of the late Reta Mary Collett (nee Ratz). Ray is survived by his son, Robert; his daughter, Catharine Mundy (husband Wayne); his grand-daughters, Jennifer and Elizabeth; two well loved great- granddaughters, Morgan and Aiden and a newly arrived great-grandson, Owen. Born in England in 1912, Ray was a resident of Canada from the age of ten. He grew up in Hastings township near Havelock, Ontario. He worked as a reporter for the Toronto Star from 1934 until 1938, when he joined the Canadian Army as a public relations officer. He served overseas with the Canadian Army from 1938 to 1946, returning to Canada with the rank of Major. Ray's career in business and consumer- relations spanned nearly fifty years. He was successively a journalist, a public relations, advertising, marketing and management executive in Toronto and Montreal. When he retired in 1979, Ray was the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Better Business Bureau of Canada. In 1947, Ray married the former Reta Mary Ratz, a nurse who, like himself, was a commissioned officer in the Canadian Army and whom he had met while they both were on active service. Ray and Reta Collett lived in Oakville, then Toronto where they raised their two children, until retirement. They moved from North York to Thornhill and then to Lakefield in 1983. They both were active in the church and community affairs. An ardent curler, Ray was a life-time member of the Lakefield Curling Club. For the past six months, Ray has lived with his daughter and son-in-law in Keswick. A memorial service will be held at the Zion United Church in Crediton, Ontario, on Saturday, November 3, 2007, at 11 am. The Reverend Mark Graves officiating. Refreshments and a brief internment service at the United Church Cemetery in Crediton will follow. Refreshments will be provided by the UCW of the Zion United Church for relatives and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a charitable donation to the Lung Association of Ontario.
