ASHFORD, Donald- December 6, 1921 - October 13, 2007 The passing of a perfect gentleman - peacefully at home in Victoria, B.C. A longtime resident of Lakefield, Ontario, Don was born and grew up in North Bay, Ontario, son of Stanley Adams Ashford and Emma Smale, and brother to Gordon, Wilfred, Alfred, George and Heather.Part of the Fisher Street Gang of teen boys who joined the armed services en masse, Don fought with the Algonquin Regiment until a mortar wound ended his military career in 1945. He met and married Betty Chapman of Noranda, Quebec, and here their four children were born, three of whom survived - Donna, Gary and Darrell(Duke). Don worked as an analytical chemist for Falconbridge Mines. A move to Manitouwadge, Ont., then to Lakefield in 1965 began his long career with Lakefield Research of Canada, now SGS. Don and the family loved Lakefield, and he set about creating a happy home on Ermatinger Street. His passion for gardening produced legendary begonias, roses, and impatiens - many wedding photos were shot in Don's gardens. His skill as a gardener was matched by the excellence of his home- brewed beer - varieties of truly scratch beer - from the grinding and roasting of grains to the measuring of alcohol content- all done with a chemist's skill to ensure that no thirsty guest went unquenched. Especially after retiring, he and Betty enjoyed golfing at the Katchiwano Golf Club with their cronies, often ending up at Ermatinger Street for beer and meat pies. Dad's kindness and devotion to family was never more evident than in the last years of Mom's life as he cared for her at home during her long illness. After her death, he moved to Victoria B.C.to be with Donna and Emily. Here he made friends easily and went ballroom dancing up until his illness in December 2006. Don was a loving and considerate person who lived as an example to all of us. Don leaves brothers Gord and Al, sister Heather, children Donna, Gary(Teresa) and Darrell(Su), grandchildren Kristal, Emily, and Jonathon, and step grandchildren Ryanne and Lauren. There will be no service at Don's request. Donations may be made in his name to the Canadian Cancer Society. 10875339

KOIVU, Vilho (Bill) Frank 1926 - 2007 - V. Bill Koivu passed peacefully to his eternal rest on the morning of October 24th, 2007 at the Sudbury Regional Hospital, Memorial Site. An active, vital and busy man for all but a few months of his 81 years, he will be remembered by his family as a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. A lifelong resident of the Sudbury area, Bill was born to Frank and Elli Koivu (nee Viitanen) both pre-deceased on June 27, 1926 in Levack, Ontario and married Aura (Liinamaa) Koivu in Sudbury in 1950. At the time of Aura's passing in 2006, she and Bill had been married for 56 years. Bill is survived by his son Brian, his daughter Brenda (Liimatainen), his son-in-law Allan Liimatainen, his daughter-in-law Ann (nee Cebasek) and two grandsons David Liimatainen and Matthew Koivu. He was predeceased by two of his children Sheila (1951) and David (1962), his brother Tuure (Ted) Koivu (1985) and by his step-mother Hilma Koivu (1983). He will be remembered by many including his sisters-in-law Aira Rauhanen and Arlene Manninen and his brother-in-law Arvo Liinamaa as well as many nieces and nephews. Bill retired from INCO in 1991 after 44 years of service. He was a churchman of the first order and a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sudbury. His Masonic affiliations were extensive, he was a life member and Past Master of Algonquin Lodge, 536 AF&AM GRC, a Past Grand Steward of the Grand Lodge of Canada in the Province of Ontario, a Past Patron of Algoma Chapter 139 order of the Eastern Star, a member and Past TPGM of the Sudbury and District Lodge of Perfection AASR, a member of the North Bay Chapter Rose Croix, the Barrie Consistry, Tuscan Chapter 95, RAM, Rameses Temple AAONMA and the Sudbury Shrine Club. Bill was a man whose love of music was exemplified by his active involvement over many decades both as a singer and administrator with the Sudbury Finnish Male Choir. In his later years, he was the driving force behind the annual Multi-cultural Christmas Around the World concert. Many community organizations and events benefited from his talents as an organizer and as somebody who really knew how to get things done. Bill was a avid cross-country skier and golfer and was known to cheer on the Sudbury Wolves, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Blue Jays on occasion. He was a treasure to his family who loved him and will dearly miss him. Funeral services will be held at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church (189 Regent Street South) on Saturday, October 27th, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. He will be resting at the JACKSON AND BARNARD FUNERAL HOME with visitation on Friday, October 26th, 2007 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A Masonic Memorial Service will be conducted under the auspices of Algonquin Lodge 536 on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. We will all cherish his memory in our hearts. ROSS, Jean February 8, 1916 - October 22, 2007 At the age of 91 years, Jean Ross passed away peacefully at the Cedars Villa Nursing Home on October 22, 2007. She was born at home in Delia, Alberta and was raised on the family farm. Jean rode her horse to a one-room school house from Grade 1 through to Grade 9. She and two friends lived in a shack in Delia in order to attend high school for Grades 10 and 11. She lived with Granny Stevenson in Calgary for Grade 12 and Normal School. Jean then taught Grades 1 through 9 in a one-room school house at Starland. She married and had two children - Nina and Jack. She helped build a house where she mixed the concrete by hand for the basement. Jean went back to university at age forty-one to upgrade her teaching certificate. She taught at several schools in and around Calgary for several years and became interested in helping brain damaged children. Jean was an avid and accomplished artist both in oil and acrylic. In 1970 she married Walter Ross and had seventeen golden years with him. He unfortunately passed away in a sad drunken driver accident in 1987. Jean is survived by her daughter Nina (Ken) Hunt, her son Jack (Mary Lou) McGowan, six grandchildren, Karen, Denise, Alan, Gary, Jeff, Caroline, and seven great-grandchildren, and her sister Margaret Brodylo and cousin Leila Gall; also several nieces and nephews, and her sister-in-law Doris Carter. She was predeceased by her parents John and Margaret Carter and her brother George Carter. A Memorial Service will take place on Saturday, October 27, 2007 at 3:00 p.m. at the Kensington Legion No. 264 (1910 Kensington Road N.W.). CARTWRIGHT, George Henry. 1925-2007. Passed away peacefully on October 21, 2007, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Served in the RCAF during WWII and was a longtime employee of Bell Canada. Only son of the late Alfred and Violet Cartwright. Beloved husband of Helen Anna Coutts. Lovingly remembered by his daughters, Heather (former son-in-law Brian Foley) and Cheryl (Jerry Brosnahan). William (Bill) James Moran Passed away peacefully at Region 7 Hospital, Miramichi, on Thursday October 18th, 2007 at the age of 83. He was predeceased by his parents Leo B. Moran and Rebecca (Molly) O'Kane, two brothers Gerald (Margie) (Fredericton) and Bryan (Rita) (Bathurst), two sisters Catherine (Joe) Holt and Margaret (John) Bowes both of Miramichi. He is survived by sister Leah (Miramichi) and brother Ralph (Campbellton) and many nieces and nephews. Bill was a veteran of World War II and served in the Navy aboard H.M.C.S. Victoriaville, as a signalman. Upon his return in 1945 he continued his work at Canada Post where he made many friends and was a dedicated employee for over 40 years. He was an avid gardener, golfer and fisherman. Bill was a 50-year member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 3, Chatham. Bill led a simple and modest life and will be missed by his many friends. ROTTGERS, HELMUT WILHELM - The death of Helmut Wilhelm, husband of Barbara Teresa (McKinney), occurred unexpectedly on October 19, 2007 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Bremerhaven, Germany he was the son of the late Reent and Irmgard Rottgers. He was employed with Quality Control Department at Saint John Ship Building Ltd. and then worked as a contractor with several manufacturing firms throughout the United States and Europe. He was a gentle and kind person who would help anybody. He enjoyed music, played the accordian and was a Skatmeister. After retiring Helmut enjoyed many hours on his land on the Belleisle cutting wood. Besides his wife he is survived by his brother, Reent of Germany and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
