Father of Richard (Debbie), Denis, Robert, Roger (Shelley) and Louise (Luc).Grandfather of Chris, Nadine, André, Kevin, Amanda, Sarah, Allen and Shawna and great grandfather of Kyle, Brant, Layla, Ethan, Jayden and Lillianne. Survived by his sister Armoza Belanger (George deceased) and brothers Emmanuel (Marie-Jeanne) and Arthur (Jeanette). Predeceased by his parents Rosina and Andre Ledoux and brother Hector. Family receiving friends at the HILLSIDE FUNERAL SERVICES, 362 Airport Rd on Friday April 20th 2007 from 2 until 4 and 7 until 9. Funeral service will be held on Saturday April 21st at 10:30 am at Sts Anges Church 232 Maplewood Ave. Donations to the Northern Cancer Research Foundation or the Canadian Diabetes Association will be greatly acknowledged by the family.

Il était l’époux de feu dame Jacqueline Duval. Il laisse dans le deuil ses enfants: Sylvie, Henri, Viviane et Jacques (Josette Poisson); ses frères et sœur, beaux-frères et belles-sœurs: Jacqueline Pelletier, Madeleine Pelletier, abbé Robert Pelletier, prêtre, Jeannine Pelletier, s.s.j., Lorraine Pelletier (J. HOWELL, DENIS - On Sunday, April 15, at Arborstone Enhanced Care, Halifax, Dr. Denis R. S. Howell (95) died peacefully with E. Elizabeth Howell, his wife of 62 years, by his side. Predeceased by daughter Mary Lee and son Peter. Survived by twin sons Bill (Alexe) and Bob (Dawn); granddaughters Emily (Mikael), Allison (Sean), Kathleen (Laura), Andrea (Brendan), Denise; and great-grandchildren Aidan and Sean. Denis was born on June 27, 1911, in Bournemouth, England. His grandfather was the conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony. His father, Colin, was an adoptee who died in a Turkish POW camp in 1917. When his mother Noreen (nee Magone) remarried, Denis stayed with his paternal grandparents, who sent him through Portsmouth Grammar School, where he acquired a lifelong passion for football. Graduating in Medicine from 'Bart's', University of London, he finished his residency in time to join the Royal Navy in 1939. He served as a medical officer on convoy duty from Murmansk to the Mediterranean and Halifax, performing appendectomies aboard armed merchant cruisers in North Atlantic gales. As the war went on he joined the commandos under Mountbatten in Madagascar, Africa, India and Burma, winning the Distinguished Service Cross. Early in the war his torpedoed ship limped into dry-dock at Saint John, New Brunswick. At an officer's reception he met an RCAF dietician, Elizabeth "Lib" Rising, home on leave from feeding the fliers at the Commonwealth Air School in Shediac. Their ensuing letters traced, chased and missed each other across the globe for the next four years. At one point he became hugely unpopular, supervising malaria inoculations in Burma. He nearly died of the disease himself and was posted back to England. Lib managed to get transferred, and they married in Scotland in 1944. Bill and Bob, the twins, were born in Liverpool early in 1946. Ten months later the Howells arrived in Canada. Denis was obliged to requalify, taking his final year medical exams at the University of Toronto. He then did a residency in dermatology in Toronto and Hamilton, finally arriving to set up practice in Halifax in 1949. He joined the staff of the Victoria General Hospital and the Department of Medicine at Dalhousie, devoting considerable time to clinics at Camp Hill and the Naval Hospital. He initiated new techniques for skin planing and grafting - invaluable for treating severely burned sailors. A pioneer, Denis instituted refresher courses and helped to establish new standards across the Atlantic Region. To this day generations of former students celebrate his exacting kindness and his insistence on the human interval as essential to practicing the art of medicine. He emphasized the importance of digging deeper, of treating the patient instead of just the symptoms. Before he retired, he finally saw a full Dermatology Department established at Dal. They named that section of the medical library after him. He believed in community. He could certainly shock CBC morning listeners into preventative action in a phone-out about the real consequences of sunburns. He took his turn as President of the Canadian Dermatological Society and Chairman of the Ethics Committee at the CMA. When it became apparent that son Peter was mentally handicapped, Denis worked tirelessly for what was then The Retarded Children's Association, both provincially and nationally. He became expert at surprising public officials with his common sense, practical planning, unassuming know-how and civilized good will. He expected people to do the right thing. A lifetime member of the Halifax St. George's Society, Ashburn Golf Club and the Bishop's Men, an important part of Denis was still living in another era. But he was never a museum of himself - he was always too busy getting on with things. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. on Monday, April 23, at the J.A. Snow Funeral Home, Halifax. The funeral will be held at St. Paul's Anglican Church, Grand Parade, Halifax, where Denis was People's Warden for five terms, at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 24. John (Earl) La Rocque 1927-2007 Saturday April 14th marked the unfortunate passing of Earl LaRocque at the Saint Joseph's Hospital. Earl was a 50 year resident of Elliot Lake having moved from Ottawa in 1956. Earl was an active member of several associations during his life in Elliot Lake including: the Legion, Anglican Church, Gentle Shepherd Church, Boy Scouts, Curling Club, and Denison Recreation Association. Shirley, his loving wife of 53 years passed away in 2005. Shirley was a supportive & loving wife who was a career nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital having worked in the obstetrics ward for most of her career. He is survived by his three children Colleen Peacock of Halifax Nova Scotia, Greg La Rocque of Denver Colorado & Grant La Rocque of Saulte Ste Marie, as well as grandchildren Sarah & Evan Peacock and Matt & Dillon La Rocque.Earl was a gifted singer and sang in several choirs over the years. He spent the last six years of his life at the Hillside Park Retirement Residence and was well taken care of by a caring and loving staff. For their unquestionable and devoted assistance the family is forever grateful. During his time spent at Hillside Park Earl enjoyed a special companionship with Maisie Boyd.Earl was well respected and liked by his peers at Denison Mines and he always made time to tutor, mentor or assist when called upon. He was very passionate about his chosen career as a metallurgist and took great pride in his profession, always striving for improvement. More than anything Earl will be remembered as a kind, gentle, compassionate & caring man and epitomized the word gentleman. He always made time to serve communion to sick or interned church or Legion members at their home. Earl was loved by many and will be missed by all that had the pleasure of knowing him.
